orld Cup fever came to an end over a month ago and at the time there was a lot of talk about the players, their level of skill and how impressive they are. We often refer to these players as champions, the best of the best, who join together as one and compete against rivals until there is a victor. According to the Oxford Dictionary, a champion is defined as:

If I were one of the editors at Oxford, I would switch the order. This is probably because I am not a huge sports fan, but also, since the launch of the Vital Foundation, I have been exposed to so many champions – many of whom who haven’t been anywhere near a sporting field. The work they do to support people who have been devastated by horrific crime and circumstance is beyond measure. To call their efforts ‘vigorous’ would be a disservice as they embody true altruism with the work, care and love they provide every day. Their achievements are truly impressive. They are the true champions, the ones we should all be talking about.

On that note, the response and work done on Mandela Day this year was something to behold. South Africans across the country became champions and did their part. You can read all about how the Vital Foundation got involved on page 4. Sanette Smit, affectionately known as Smitti, gives our female readers some practical advice on selfdefence. She runs workshops that provide women with one of the greatest gifts: the ability to empower themselves, and to know that they can handle themselves in any dangerous situation. In other news, there are two key events you need to put in your calendar: the Vital Winelands Run and the Vital Spring Classic. These events take centre stage in November and early bookings will ensure you are not disappointed. To find out more, please turn to page 6. Lastly, some of us are less thrilled about the change of season than others; it is allergy season again. But not to worry, as Andrea provides her best tips on how to ease your sneezes. Yours in good health,

vital foundation: feedback

mandela day

ignites south African's generosity The Vital Foundation was proud to be associated with the many South Africans who pledged their 67 Minutes and more on Mandela Day this year. Forty-six organisations, focusing on woman and child abuse, across the country heeded the call from the Vital Foundation and opened their doors to volunteers who wanted to give of their time and make a difference.

T

he day echoed the results from the World Giving Index which demonstrated that South Africa’s generosity towards the less fortunate has improved since the first International Nelson Mandela Day in 2009. The findings

04 · SEPTEMBER 2014

of this index indicate that South Africa improved from 108th position in 2011 to 69th in 2013; this was published in December last year. South Africa ranking on the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) World Giving Index is a

positive sign for the country, and CAF’s Southern Africa chief executive, Colleen du Toit, says Mandela Day is an effective campaign to get people to start volunteering. “We find that once someone has volunteered for the first time – even for just 67

minutes – they are very keen to make volunteering an ongoing aspect of their lives.” The Vital Foundation identified the need for South Africans to volunteer their time; however, there is uncertainty about where to go and how to volunteer.

This Mandelda Day, the Vital Foundation aimed to close this information gap by introducing a unique initiative that linked volunteers with the organisations needing assistance. The mechanisms for this process were provided on the Vital Foundation website.

“It was an experience I would not trade for the world”

were so appreciative of our assistance. It was an experience I would not trade for the world,” said Lundi Ngqongwa, who helped at the Litha Labantu Centre in Gugulethu, Cape Town. Seugnet Robsen and her team from Vital Health Foods pledged their time at Matla a Bana (Cape Town). They painted a garage next to the police station in Fish Hoek. The garage is going to be used for children who have to report cases. The result was a much warmer and childfriendly room. “It was great being part of this project; it only took a few moments to make a difference. I wish we could do something like this every day,” said Robsen.

On the day, volunteers were brought in to assist with administration tasks, painting, playing with the children and teaching – to name just a few. “Mandela Day was awesome; we had to help serve about 600 to 700 elderly people in an event they had organised specially for them. It was hard work, but we enjoyed every minute of it and they

save the dates THE VITAL SPRING CLASSIC 2014 The Vital Spring Classic, in its 16th year, has become an event that is marked down in calendars early on in the year. This golf day is more than some fun in the sun; it is a critical fundraising occasion that the community in the surrounding area depends on.

T

his year, it is the ambition of Vital Health Foods to break the record from previous years and raise an amount that can really provide support to the social problems that afflict so many communities. This event focuses on one community in particular and the amazing work done by the Drakenstein Palliative Hospice and Butterfly House in Paarl, Cape Town. This organisation also speaks to the core of what the Vital Foundation is about. This is particularly the case with Butterfly House, which has the vision to “provide services, often in partnership with other organisations, which will add to the quality of life of patients, their families (infected and affected) and others made vulnerable through neglect, abuse, malnutrition, substance abuse, extreme poverty and illness”. Thus far, the Vital Foundation has raised R2.8 million from the ‘R1 makes a difference’ campaign, through which Vital Health Foods has pledged R1 from every pack of Vital supplements sold in South Africa. It is the mission of the Vital Foundation to build healthy homes and healthy families. The Vital Spring Classic is now an event that

will contribute to the good work done by the Vital Foundation. For more information, please visit www.vitalfoundation.co.za. In order to make this year’s Vital Spring Classic a success, we are seeking donations of any kind to assist in making the day a bigger and better affair than last year, when a cheque for R220 000 was handed over to the management of the Drakenstein Hospice. Ideally, four-ball prizes would be best – but prizes for raffle draws, spot prizes and cash will gladly be accepted. All donors will be acknowledged in the programme on the day and through other media channels. Please contact Raquel Goaté on 021 900 2558 or email at raquel@vhf.co.za regarding your donation.

THE VITAL WINELANDS RUN 2014 The annual Vital Run we all know and love has undergone a bit of a make-over and will now be known as the Vital Winelands Run. This new and improved event is brought to you by the Helderberg Harriers in collaboration with Run/Walk for Life. In its fifth year, the event hopes to attract running and walking enthusiasts who will be able to enjoy some Western Cape splendour as summer approaches. While the Vital Winelands Run is an opportunity to get out in the sun with your family, it is also a key fundraising event in aid of the PATCH Helderberg Child Abuse Centre. Last year, the event drew over 4 000 enthusiastic finishers; this year we would like to top that number.

It took one person and her friends to have compassion for children who were raped and abused in the Helderberg area. She realised that the victims of these horrendous crimes still had to travel to Cape Town, 40 km away, for therapy and treatment. Not to mention having to go to a casualty department of a hospital (as a rape victim) and wait hours to receive medical treatment. In 1992, this team stepped out to make a difference and started fundraising. PATCH/Helderberg Child Abuse Centre was the result (PATCH is an acronym for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse.) Due to the dramatic increase in child abuse cases being reported, PATCH made the move towards specialising in services for child victims of sexual abuse only. PATCH also made a strategic decision to open satellite offices throughout the Helderberg basin in order to be more accessible to the communities it served. For more information on the work they do, visit www.patch-helderberg.com.

FAQs Answers to frequently asked questions

Nutrition update

I am a cardiac patient on warfarin. Is it safe for me to take Vital Omega 3 Concentrate?

Otherwise known as the globe artichoke, this species of thistle has been cultivated as a food. The flower buds are the edible portion. Once these bloom they are rendered inedible. Artichoke extract seems to modestly reduce total cholesterol and LDL, especially in people with higher levels. It also helps with dyspepsia as it significantly reduces symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, flatulence and abdominal pain.

Firstly, I would advise you to consult with your doctor as every case is different. However, supplementation should be harmless if you do not go over the safety limit of 3 g, where there is potential for a significant blood-thinning effect, therefore increasing the risk of bleeding and enhancing the effect of the warfarin. Remember, the 3 g of omega-3 fatty acids is not equivalent to 3 x 1 000 mg capsules but rather the sum of the

eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) components. The EPA and DHA make up the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in each 1 000 mg capsule.

My cholesterol levels recently tested as high. I was advised to watch my diet or I would have to go on medication. Are there any supplements I could also take? It is fortunate that you do not need medication at present. Exercise and diet will play a key role in controlling your cholesterol level. As part of the dietary intervention, I would recommend Vital Cholesterol Ease. This supplement contains a few of the nutrients known to help lower and support healthy blood cholesterol levels.

Sanette Smit (Smitti)

Self-defence expert With an 8th Dan black belt in karate and the highest graded woman in karate in Africa, not to mention one of the highest graded women in the world, Smitti has been involved in the field of karate and self-defence for over 30 years.

SANETTE SMIT Smitti

Smitti has a grave concern regarding rape, personal safety and welfare. Her unique background in defence has led to the creation of a fully comprehensive rape prevention and self-defence programme which she runs on a regular basis. She shares some of her valuable advice.

the self-defence expert is in

Empowered defence The current rape statistics in South Africa are growing at a rate that is of great concern to the country. This is why it is important to look at ways to empower and encourage every woman, regardless of her age, physical strength, personality or fitness level. It is critical to know what your capabilities are in terms of self-defence. Gross motor skills or basic body movements are rooted into one’s mind and muscle memory. In order to react naturally when one is under pressure, it is imperative to use them effectively. Therefore, rehearsing movements in a safe environment is important in order to make these movements more comfortable when under pressure. One should also practise newly learned defence skills in the kitchen, bathroom and garage so that your exposure is not only confined to the open space of a hall or gym.

Primarily, these workshops are run at schools in disadvantaged areas where young girls are constantly exposed to substance abuse and high levels of violence. “I really want to implement a Train the Trainer initiative in order to have more training done across the country. Raising awareness that women may defend themselves when their personal space and self is being violated, I hope to spread the message of empowerment,” says Smitti. For more information, visit www.selfdefence.co.za or contact Margaret on 021 461 0036.

The greatest gift “For my 3rd Dan thesis, rape was my subject matter and through my research I realised that the average woman would not commit to the formal training of karate. Therefore, it was important for me to develop a self-defence training module that would enable women on the street to learn the basic skills of self-protection. Violence against women in South Africa has intensified and they need to step forward and empower themselves – it is the greatest gift,” says Smitti. According to Smitti, women are born with the gift of intuition, which links up with the ability to sense danger. By learning the basic techniques of self-defence, women can recognise the signs when they feel uncomfortable, hear or see something odd that could pose a danger to their personal safety. Smitti’s two-hour workshops help identify different forms of attack, as well as the various training techniques to enable women to deal with attacks from the front and back, among others. Basic self-protection workshops are also run in schools for learners from grade 1 upwards.

Seasonal allergies like hay fever provide such discomfort that sufferers are filled with feelings of despair at the thought of spring. Why some people suffer through spring with hay fever while others are out at play in the fields enjoying the change of season, still remains something of a mystery. Andrea du Plessis gives some valuable tips in using natural remedies to bring relief from the symptoms associated with seasonal allergies.

Seasonal allergies Seasonal allergies, also referred to as hay fever and allergic rhinitis, are characterised by symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes and sinus congestion. The body’s immune system and nasal airways over-react to contact with particles of dust and pollen, which don’t seem to irritate everyone equally and some people not at all. But this is the cause of the symptoms that are experienced by sufferers of hay fever. More symptoms of allergic rhinitis: •R unny nose •P ost-nasal drip •R ed and watery eyes •S wollen eyelids • I tchy mouth, throat, ears and face •S ore throat •D ry cough

Exam time blues Many students who suffer from seasonal allergies can attest to the devastating effect of a hay fever attack during exam time. In fact, a survey showed that more than 30% of high school learners suffer with sinus allergies and hay fever. The symptoms of these allergies can suppress a student’s

performance during exam time, when one can least afford such interference. ⊲ Read more

Rinse your sinuses Rinsing your nasal passages with a sterile saline or salt water solution (nasal irrigation) is a quick, inexpensive and very effective way to relieve nasal congestion. Rinsing directly flushes out mucus and allergens from your nose. Look for a squeeze bottle or a neti pot (a small container with a spout designed for nasal rinsing) at your pharmacy or health food store. Use water that’s distilled, sterile, previously boiled and cooled or filtered to make up the saline irrigation solution.

Calming chamomile face wash

of chamomile will help soothe the irritated skin and can help reduce the itching sensation.

recipe Steep two teabags of Vital Chamomile Tea in 200 ml of boiling water for three minutes. Allow to cool or add an additional 100 ml of cold water to speed up the cooling.

Use the tea to: •R inse your face •W ash out your eyes •W ipe eyes and face with a cotton bud dipped into the tea •Y ou can even place the teabags on your eyes for additional relief after washing your face

Why washing your face works It is often said that rubbing your eyes will just worsen the itching sensation – this is indeed true. Washing one’s face when struck with itchy eyes is often recommended as it helps remove the pollen molecules that may get stuck in your eyelids. Pollen particles, when viewed under a microscope, have hundreds of hook-like, hairy extensions designed to latch onto surfaces to maximise their chances of being caught on the reproductive areas of plants to ensure the reproduction of the next generation.

Chamomile has antiinflammatory and soothing effects, not only when ingested as a tea, but also when applied topically to the skin. Try this chamomile face wash. Besides rinsing the pollen particles out of your eyelids and face, the calming effects 013

Stinging Nettle Root Extract (Urtica dioica)

Preliminary research has shown how stinging nettle root can help bring relief from symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

The polysaccharide components found in stinging nettle root have immune-supporting and mild antiinflammatory effects.

Grapeseed Extract (Vitis vinifera)

Grapeseed extract may help to decrease symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Preliminary research suggests that catechins found in grapeseed might inhibit allergen-induced histamine release in the body.

Astragalus Extract (Astragalus membranaceus)

Astragalus has been shown to improve symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing and itching when compared to the effects of a placebo treatment.

Astragalus is known to support the immune system. Polysaccharide constituents found in the plant appear to bind and activate immune cells.

Eyebright Extract (Euphrasia officinalis)

Antioxidants and phytochemical components found in the eyebright plant help bring relief from itchy, watery eyes.

Eyebright has mild anti-inflammatory and anti-catarrhal properties.

ARE THEY DISTRACTED? Classified as a psychiatric disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed disorders in children and adolescents. Characterised by being easily distracted, hyperactive, inattentive and impulsive, ADHD becomes apparent in some children during preschool and in early school years.

Adults also suffer from ADHD, as 60% of children go undiagnosed and retain the disorder into adulthood. About one in four children with ADHD have at least one relative with the disorder, which means it is a hereditary disorder. Studies have shown that children suffering from ADHD may have a vitamin and mineral deficiency. Decreases in zinc, essential fatty acids, iron, B vitamins and glyconutrients have been reported in children with ADHD.

Food sources of zinc

Food sources of omega-3 fatty acids

Food sources of vitamin B6

Beef / Pork / Shellfish / Peanuts / Legumes

Tuna / Salmon / Shrimp / Walnuts / Flaxseeds

Potatoes / Milk / Eggs / Cheese / Fish

Two studies have found that zinc supplements reduced hyperactive, impulsive and impaired socialisation symptoms. Zinc supplementation may be a more effective treatment for older children with higher body mass index scores.

Essential fatty acids serve many roles in the body, including proper nerve and brain function. Preliminary evidence supports the idea that deficiencies or imbalances in certain highly unsaturated fatty acids may contribute to ADHD.

Some research suggests that vitamin B6 supplementation alone or in combination with high doses of other B vitamins may help in the treatment of ADHD.

Did you know?

It is important to treat ADHD, as individuals will battle to function on a daily basis. Children often struggle in the classroom, which can lead to academic failure.

ADHD is thought to affect about 9.2% of boys and 2.9% of girls who are of school age.

In a study with 100 overweight participants, eating prunes daily resulted in a greater reduction in weight and centimetres than in those who did not eat prunes. The participants found that eating prunes increased their feeling of fullness or satiety.

In a four-week study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, individuals who followed a diet with added almonds reported greater satiety, but no weight gain due to added kilojoules.

The strong flavour of chillies added to meals benefit individuals who want to reduce their food intake for weight loss. Satiety is reached with smaller portions of hot and spicy foods flavoured with chillies. People tend to eat larger portions of bland food before feeling satisfied.

If you want to lose weight, try to include oat bran into your diet, as research has shown how eating oat bran for breakfast can keep you satisfied from breakfast to lunch. Oat bran has a low glycaemic index which helps moderate blood glucose levels and therefore appetite.
