Course : Design Studio - 1 Medium : Graphite drawings on Mylar sheets Understanding the process of designing is like Muscle to the anatomy of a Garden. Studio - 1 being the base of the process of becoming a Landscape Designer, this project was an approach to understand the way esteemed landscape architects approached their design projects to fulfil the requirements. An excercise to understand the power of hand drawn diagrams and sketches. The project involved research, documentations, analysis, and presentation of a precedent study. The excercise increased general knowledge and understanding of significant landscape works and their designers as well as the historical and cultural contexts in which they occured.

As a result of the intermediate stage and newly added activities at Taxi and Wazee, there will be new spatial configurations and networks. These integrated networks result into established spatial configurations. Thus emerges RiNO Plus with more galleries, restaurants, coffee shops, parks, bike shops, outdoor-indoor markets, boardwalk etc.

Wedding Amphitheatre

As we started looking for a solution for our site, we looked at some of images and picked these images as an ispiration for the design of Wedding Amphitheatre.

Internship Project, Fallingwater Medium : AutoCAD, Hand drawing

The wedding amphitheater was originally installed over two decades ago and served as an area for gatherings and lessons on nature and ecology. The space has since been designated as an outdoor wedding space and holds between 15 and 30 weddings each year between May and October. The site is valued for its natural setting and rustic aesthetic. While the space has many charms, it has equally as many challenges. The amphitheater is only accessible by a single steep path that is difficult to navigate and possess several tripping hazards. Took careful measurements of the space to determine how much area was there to design in and what would be a realistic solution for the site. After collecting all necessary measurements several conceptual drawings were produced that explanied different ways to use and access the space. Once the concept was approved, I made basic construction drawings for the maintenance department of Fallingwater to construct the walls in future.

Sections for Retaining walls at Wedding Amphitheatre

Construction Plan was prepared for the maintenance staff at Fallingwater.


Due to the cost of stones and labor work, it was required to think of an alternate proposal for the entrance of the Amphitheatre.

Blocking the existing entrance B shown in the diagram on left was proposed to address the issue of visibility of bridal party. Planted few Holly to block this entrance and visual connection.

Keeping existing condition in consideration, the entrance was proposed as shown in the diagram above. It was necessary to provide a service entry and ADA accessible entrance to the theatre in a way that it wouldn’t disturb the hiking trails in the woods behind the theatre.

Supervised the construction of these steps and the service entry as a Project Manager.



Pottery Terrace Garden

As we started tearing apart the existing garden, we found out the planter was filled with huge rocks as shown in the image on right.

Under the layer of these huge rocks, there was a layer of gravel to cover the drainage. And the planter had a rotten Landscape fabric to protect the concrete work from constant water in the soil.

As the landscape fabric was all rotten, we decided to remove it and repaint the planter and clean it up with the help of maintenance department at Fallingwater for the installation of our new garden design.

Garden installation Goal of this project was to create a garden design for a built in planter designed by FLW located outside of the pottery terrace to draw visitor’s attention to the space. As seen in the picture below, due to the use of scaffolding for house preservation projects, the existing garden was compromised. This was a great opportunity to restart the garden with a fresh idea using native woodland plants. Idea for the redesign of this garden was to bring back the historic value with two rhododendron. As rhododendron give the planter height, that helps draw visitor’s attention upward as they walk towards the entrance of the house. Virginia Creeper was used for the same reason as well as to bring good fall foliage trailing down the edge of planter.

A Monarch Waystation is a designed landscape intended to provide Monarch Butterfly habitat in NorthAmerica. As the footprint of human development has expanded, Monarch butterfly habitat has decreased. A Monarch Waystation provides two primary plant groups, host plants and nectar plants.

As shown in a key map on left, the site selected for the Monarch Waystation is located behind the Barn at Fallingwater, along the driveway to the Barn’s upper parking area, main wedding ceremony space, and trailhead to the Bear Run Nature Reserve. As seen below, the existing site consisted of moved grass that did little to enhance a guest’s experience of the property. Our aim was to create an area with augmented aesthetic appeal that provides connection between events spaces and is balanced with naturally occurring ecological structure and habitat function.

A host plant is a plant used by an organism for shelter or to complete it’s lifecycle. Millkweed is the Monarch Butterfly’s host plant and serves as a crucial food source and means of protection for Monarch Butterfly caterpillars. When a Monarch caterpillar eats the leaves from a Milkweed plant, it ingests cardenolides (a toxin contained in Milkweed plants) which makes the caterpillar toxic to many predator species. If a bird ate a Monarch butterfly or caterpillar fat from Milkweed, the bird would throw-up. A nectar plant is any plant that is used as a food source by pollinator organisms. Monarch butterflies rely on host plants for food and energy during their long migrations.


Our intent was to create a natural looking garden that would complement the surrounding nature reserve while providing a more pleasing approach to the parking area and event space as well as establish a better sense of connection between event spaces at the Barn. We wanted to use our design as a way to communicate the value of Monarch Butterflies and their special relationship with Milkweed plants.

Variations in soil moisture, from fully saturated near an active creek, to well trained and dry by an existing meadow allowed for increased plant diversity but also required more attention be paid to plant groupings and ensuring plants were planted in an environment they would thrive in and be able to provide Monarch habitat for years to come.

This inspired the “Monarch Lifeline� a ribbon of Common Milkweed (Asclepias syrica) that flows throughout the garden area, uniting the space and connecting it with previously existing plant populations. This design is intended to highlight Milkweed and it’s crucial role in the continued success of the Monarch Butterfly.

Garden Construction

As we started preparing the soil for installation of Monarch Waystation, we started with sod cutting using the sod cutter.

As we had the soil prepared to plant the plugs, we had few volunteers coming up and help us plant almost around 1000s of little plugs at Monarch Waystation.

The last step in installation of our project few high school kids helped us mulching the entire garden of around 4200 sq. ft area.

Next step in preparing the soil was to rototill it with fertilizer to increase nourishment value of soil.



Hillside Project

As shown in the drawing above, summer 2013 interns of Fallingwater connected the three different drainage outlets on the hillside between the main house and guest house to make a single drainage outlet.

As a result of this solution, the water was running off the hill and eventually it started settling down on the hillside and that made the soil very swampy all the time.

As shown in the drawing on left, a local ecological restoration company donated supplies and material to improve the soil condition on Hillside and to channel the water into woods. When we found the pool drainage, we connected that drainage 5 into the pipe 4 so that soil could stay dryer and HillSide could be accessible for planting native species and weeding non-native species.

Aim of this project was to provide a space for health and rejuvenation for city dwellers. It is an integrated development incorporating residential, eduvational and sports facilities. Aim to design the Development to have maximum open/green space, minimal building footprint, low carbon footprint.

City Square, Vadodara

- A City Square is an open public space majorly used for public gatherings. - The vision for Vadodara City square is to bring in the vibrancy to the city dwellers as well as the visitors. The site being opposite to the Railway station of the city, it makes a perfect location for creating a city identity through City Square. - The City Square is planned to create a green oasis with plenty of shade trees and flower trees to create a visually pleasant view for users as well as conserving the bio diversity of the city. - The City Square will help reduce the pollution due to heavy usage of vehicles as well as the pollution due to railway station.

Total Landscape Area to be developed around City Square = 9800 + 8200 sq.m = 18000 sq.m Along with the development of city square, overall area around the railway station will be enhanced to develop space as a magnet for development The proposal was to create a pedestrian connection between the Vadodara Railway Station, proposed MLCP, Hirak Baugh and proposed City Square.


Urban Weave - Landscape Concept 01 The city square is conceptualised as a weaving pattern that breaks the site into various green pockets with lawns and flower shrubberies and water features on the central axis. - The Square will be heavily planted with avenue trees on the periphery and will have flower trees and shrubberies at the central part of the square with three hard paved plazas with water features. - Avenue trees will create different vistas to have the view of flower trees, shrubberies and water features.


Urban Leaf - Landscape Concept 02 The city square is conceptualised as a leaf pattern with breaking the site into various green pockets with mounds and lawns with a flower shrubbery and musical fountain in the centre. - The Square will be heavily planted with avenue trees on the periphery and will have flower trees and shrubberies at the central part of the square with two water fountains. - Avenue trees will create different vistas to have the view of flower trees, shrubberies and water features.
