BEHROZE SABZWARI
Q. You’ve been a monumental part of the evolution of Pakistan’s media industry. What do you perceive to be your greatest strength that has driven your accomplishments in the past several years, while keeping you focused and still going strong at this stage of your career? A. Utmost passion for acting has always been my driving strength. I don’t believe in short cuts or taking the easy way out. Determination, resilience and unshakable resolve, that’s what’s needed to rise to the top. When you’re led by passion, nothing can derail you. Q. They say that getting to the top involves a lot of sacrifices and relentless hard work. How do you cope with the daily struggles and setbacks and maintain a positive outlook? After having been through years
of struggle, would you do it any differently? A. This is a daily struggle and any successful man embraces the challenges. My set-backs don’t define me and I remind myself of that every day. What counts is how I pick myself up, brush off the hate and move on. And I have not stopped because for me, I feel the sky is the limit. Q. What makes a script or a role jump off the page for you? A. For an actor the content and crux of a play or film is the main thing and if that’s strong then I don’t mind being a part of it. It’s vital for a play to create an impact, a sort of ripple effect that’s talked about for years to come. When I see a script like that, I jump all in. Q. Of the many diverse roles you’ve played,
is there one that stands out for you? A. You would think that after a couple of decades in this field it would be difficult to pick just one but for me it was definitely QABACHA. I loved that role and I
of rising to the top? A. As we don’t have a lot of schools and academies in our country, we must learn from our seniors as I did in my time. That can go a long way. Personal advice from me would be
still go into Qabacha mode ever now and then with close friends. Q. They say to be an actor means you’re constantly learning and changing. How true is that for you? A. This is a 100 percent correct as learning never ever stops. I learn something new every day from chance encounters with people to the places I visit. The yearning for something new is my constant companion. Q. Managing your home life and your demanding career, you must not get a lot of time for yourself. What is your favorite way to relax and unwind at the end of the day? A. After a long day I pretty much just look forward to lounging on my couch and watching a good movie.
to respect your seniors, learn your lines, be on time and nothing is going to stop you. Q. Who is your biggest inspiration in your field and why? A. Being a true student I have been inspired by a lot of my seniors, so naming one won’t be fair. What I can say is God bless them for being my mentors and teachers and guiding me as well as they did. Q. You are known by many names, specifically the many memorable characters you’ve embodied, but who is Behroze Sabzwari? Describe yourself in 5 words. A. My work is my name. Q. If you could go back in time to when you were starting your career, what advice would you give yourself? A. Practicing Humility is imperative to me. I was known for NAUSHA in KHUDA KI BASTI, a blockbuster serial of its time and I want to tell that young Behroze to keep his head low :) Q. Since you absolutely become the roles you play, or should I say live, where do the characters end and you begin? A. Acting is my passion and I love losing myself in my roles. But I’m such a professional that as the scene ends that character is “poof” gone and I’m back as me. Believe me that’s essential if you’re serious about your job. Q. What has been the biggest setback that you’ve faced in your professional
But on certain occasions it’s always a nice ending to a day to spend a couple of hours with my close friends. Q. For aspiring young actors in this industry, what advice would you share? What are the Dos and Don’ts
life? How did you manage to overcome it? A. Setbacks are usually unavoidable if you're doing something worthwhile. For me I think the biggest problem I faced when I entered this field many moons ago, was learning to swallow negative public input. It took some time for me to understand that when you're in the spot light, there will be both love and hate flowing your way. The key is to focus on your work, give it your all and not care about the rest. Q. How much stress does your life entail on a daily basis? How do you counter your stress level when things get overwhelming?
A. I'm a father and an actor living in this society, stress is part of the package. It's all about finding your groove, understanding your limitations and exercising, along with just a little bit of alone time. I can't tell you how rejuvenating it can be to spend time with just yourself and your thoughts. I highly recommend it.
