Mobile Platform for Pregnant Couples

Work by Li Xin Purple Supervised by Dr. XIN Xiang Yang, Michael Lai, Tequila Chan Special thanks: HU Jingjing, MU Jing, Anakin Man, WANG Lina

A three month research and design project was targeted towards understanding the emotional needs of pregnant couples from both the pregnant mothers and the fathers’ point of view in order to strengthen the bond between them. This project was completed in collaboration with Changhong as my capstone project for the Master of Design Scheme Interaction Design program at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design. I acted as the core researcher and designer on this project. The design challenge was to design a software and hardware platform that helps the pregnant couple to understand the activities of their unborn child in a joyful way and strengthens the bond between the couple during later stages of pregnancy by helping the father feel closer to the unborn child, and then turning translating these opportunities into feasible and viable design recommendations and solutions.

The primary focus of this project is more on later stages of pregnancy, at which the unborn child starts to develop the ability of hearing and reacting from the outside world. Meanwhile, the pregnant mother try to communicate with the unborn baby at these stages. However, the father feels hopeless and frustrated at the same time because he cannot feel the same way as her. Although he wishes to understand and support her.

ENCOUNTER -

Interactive Installation for Mall Ceiling in Hong

Kong

Work by Li Xin Purple in collaboration with Krupali Raiyani, Wang Shu Sidney, Cheng Peng

A six week embedded interaction workshop focusing on interactive environments design hosted by architect Michael Fox, author of the book Interactive Architecture. The brief was to explore the new skills of contemporary social interactions and develop means to bring these new methods out of the computer and into the real physical world which we inhabit. We contacted 3M and have them sponsored us for the radiant film materials.

Blog: http://team-analog.blogspot.com/

Encounter is an art installation proposed to be positioned in a mall in Hong Kong. It is a responsive space that is controlled by two people among the crowd who have something in common. The idea is to highlight two strangers who share a common appearance or behaviour and give them a sense of control, together, over the space. In busy public spaces hundreds of people cross paths everyday without much of an interaction or even noticing each other. Our installation hopes to create a moment of acknowledgement and appreciation of someone who could perhaps have a lot in common with you.

How the model works

Showcase Video: http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/v1F4pKIE_-Q/ Persons in the crowd are scanned for similarities based on pre-decided parameters of appearance; such as colour of clothes, or behaviour; such as talking on the phone, carrying a baby, etc. and a pair is identified. These two individuals in the chosen pair control the motion of the ceiling above them. As they move, the object above them moves and upon crossing each other’s paths, the whole ceiling celebrates their similarity by making an extensive pattern before it resets to default appearance.

Innovative Service for the Betterment of Soci

iety in China

Work by Li Xin Purple in collaboration with Charles Law, Mark Bowers, Edward Yen, Sheila Tse(Design Practices)

Our challenge was to create a business model that could propel business forward. Not wanting to worry ourselves with just the bottom line, we wanted to create something for the betterment of society. The goal and intention of Underpin is about empowering impoverished communities with an opportunity to make better futures for themselves. To accomplish this, we propose collaborations with disadvantaged craftsmen and to assist them with design, marketing, and technology expertise. Additionally, we would utilize crowd-financing mechanisms as a means to fund the project.

Opportunity Gap The opportunity for a high-status socially responsible brand is available in the market. Design and branding efforts will be focused on ensuring Underpin products exuberate generosity and social responsibility as a means to emphasize status in consumer markets.

Future Library for the Howard Smith Wh in Brisbane

harves Site

Work by Li Xin Purple in collaboration with Mark Bowers, Scott Smithers (QUT), Fedja Mehinagic (QUT)

The design brief asked for us to develop a future library proposal for the Howard Smith Wharves site in Brisbane, Australia. In collaboration with a team of two architecture students from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, we developed a proposal for our concept library. Libraries are no longer quiet reading centers, but sites that foster community activities and educational programs, among others. Instead of a passive library, we need an active one. To make the site into an attractive gathering place we decided to focus on a topic we feel is a universal language. Food. Health and obesity are major global concerns and proper nutrition education is lacking in many places. By offering a “library that isn’t focused so much on books, but instead the idea of knowledge, we can create a place that tackles real problems and offers substantial information, education and insights for the community. Call it another variation of the Specialty library - instead of just Law or Medicine - we provide resources on food.

Innovative Product for Image and Video Captu

uring

Work by Li Xin Purple in collaboration with Jackson Choi, Su Qin, Liu Yaming

Two week project to explore a new tangible interaction concept. The result was FuniMovi, an innovative image and video-capturing product that provide funny experiences of image capture and story sharing. The product is inspired by the “2 Doors model in Beijing Opera, where the 2 doors are the gateways connecting the reality with virtual world. Attributes such as self identity of actors will interchange with mask, costume and props along the journey. Author and his creation coexist in two sides of the screen.

iPhone Application for Software Comparison

Work by Li Xin Purple in collaboration with Anakin Man, Marina Tam, Kenny Yue, Su Qin

Professional suggestions are important for software searching and comparing. As there are many considerable software for selecting prototyping software, we proposed to group the considerations according to different software types, user groups and output platforms.

Interactive Prototype

This prototype is able to interact with the user to provide a feel of using the actual interface

Step 1: Select their preferences (tilt to select) Step 2: Shake and filter Step 3: Tilt and compare

Flash Demo Video: http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/QsDOS-u60Pk/

A short essay of professional recommendation will be given for each of these groups, with key considerations highlighted, so that users can learn how to choose for suitable software.

This is a visualization of how different people accomplish one task - posting a message on sohu.com. I observed six people while they are performing this task in their own way without any distraction and recorded their activities, in order to study their emotional changes and understand the interaction between users and the interface.

Both the frustration and satisfaction they encountered during the process have made great contribution to my analysis of this project and the investigation of the user experience of this website.

Waggle for Music Playing

Work by Li Xin Purple

Waggle is a digital instrument that can get power from the air flow, which provides people an easier way to create or play songs while dancing and jumping. It offers people a healthy way to entertain. Through wagging, the air flow pushes the wheel to roll and provides energy, which is needed for sound making. And different positions make different ranges of sound.
