I was driving down the r o a d t h e o t h e r d a y, a n d pulled up behind a vehicle t h a t h a d a b u m p e r s t i c k e r. The sticker read “My pet is smarter than the President.” I w o n’ t t r y t o g u e s s a s t o which President they were referring to, but it made me wonder when we arrived at t h e p l a c e w h e r e i t ’s o k a y t o t r e a t o t h e r s s o p o o r l y. S o d i s r e s p e c t f u l l y. We a r e teaching a generation of f u t u r e l e a d e r s t h a t h o w yo u t a l k a b o u t o t h e r s , h o w yo u treat others, does not matt e r a n y m o r e. Fr e e d o m o f s p e e c h i s a c r i t i c a l t h i n g, but so is kindness, and there d o e s n’ t s e e m t o b e m u c h o f it left in this world. The world we live in now is much different than the world I g rew up in. It used to be that people of different opinions worked with each other to collaborate and solve problems. This was at the highest levels of g ov e r n m e n t a n d g l o b a l o r g a n i z a t i o n s . Yo u d i d n’ t a l ways ag ree with others, and sometimes the passion in the r o o m l e d t o u g l y c o nv e r s a tions, but things still got d o n e. P r o g r e s s w a s m a d e. Are we making prog ress anymore? Sometimes, I guess w e a r e. B u t i t s e e m s t o b e “forced” prog ress, forced by t h o s e t h a t h av e t h e m o s t votes. We c a n d i s c u s s w o r l d politics until we are blue ( o r r e d ) i n t h e f a c e. W h a t I find unacceptable is the way we are treating each other at the micro-level. Business to business relationships. B u ye r t o s e l l e r. Te a m m a t e t o t e a m m a t e. E v e n f a m i l y members to family members. The world around us,

and the media that enflames the chaos, is shaping a new n o r m . A n o r m w h e r e i t ’s acceptable to treat people around us with disrespect. Wi t h d i s d a i n . T h e r e i s a n absence of kindness. If things are going to c h a n g e, l e a d e r s m u s t s t a r t striving for higher stand a r d s .
