women in STEM
Our students shed some light on the scarcity of women in science in four different reports.
How to encourage women to study STEM degrees Mª JOSÉ ENCISO LÓPEZ
According to a recent study, less than 30% of the world’s researchers are women. Without more women in STEM, the world will continue to be designed by and for men, and the potential of girls and women will remain untapped.
ARE WE REALLY SUPPORTING EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES?
STEM
It’s important to remember that bringing more women into the STEM workforce starts in the classroom. Girls need the opportunity to explore these subjects, to see real-world applications, and to follow their curiosity. Encouraging girls in STEM not only means giving them every opportunity to learn but also altering the existing STEM curriculum in the classroom, as well as incorporating more collaborative projects, similarly, creating special events and camps focused on STEM education for girls.
WHAT COULD THE KEY BE? Cultural forces are keeping women and girls out of STEM. If we want to improve representation, we have to change the cultural forces that affect gender equality and we have to change our mindset. Girls are often socialized to believe that boys are more inherently talented in STEM subjects (which is a myth) and often become discouraged as they move through school and are not supported in learning these subjects. Another way to encourage gender equality in STEM is to show girls all the cool things they can do with technology. It would seem that supporting a growth mindset is key for women in STEM.
TO HIGHLIGHT On the whole, if we want girls to persevere and get excited about STEM, we have to help them shift their mindset. A growth mindset is all about exploration, trial and error, and getting better over time, not celebrating the concept of “natural talent.” Girls need to feel empowered to make mistakes and learn from them. Only then will they follow their interests and become involved in STEM long-term.

According to Forbes magazine, although the medical field and computer science have been embraced by women over the years, there is evidence that other STEM subjects are not in line with women's interests. Women are deemed to consider STEM subjects boring due to the traditional methods of the past. Perhaps, girls would give these subjects a chance if an appropriate classroom atmosphere was created, so that girls and young women would be engaged and thrive. CULTIVATING THE RIGHT MINDSET
Furthermore, fostering the right mindset is key when studying any subject, This involves a willingness to constantly learn and improve, in spite of mistakes. Assuming the possibility of being right or wrong are part of the scientific process.
CURRENT IMPLICATIONS
Coronavirus and the lack of support given to scientists, engineers and so on, has proved the necessity of taking women into account to face other possible pandemics. Women and men must work together and be aware of their capability and the necessity of controlling any virus, now and in the future.

Introduction The goal of this report is to motivate more female students in our area to embrace the science field as a solid career path. New studies on women representation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects are shading light on the critical weight this is going to have in years to come, not only in Europe but also on a global scale. Based on their key aspects, this report will outline a series of recommendations to achieve its goal.
Not a man´s world Also, as claimed by the European Employment Committee, math skills are considered essential to success in STEM fields.
A bright future According to the European Labor Authority (ELA), a large number of STEM occupations are predicted to grow faster than the average rate for all occupations, and some of the largest increases will be in engineering and computer related fields. Attracting and retaining more women in the STEM workforce will maximize innovation, creativity, and competitiveness.
Getting to it My recommendation is that we create an inclusive environment in our science department that supports female student’s retention. It is also suggested that we raise awareness of implicit bias by having teachers, parents and students recognize and avoid gender-science stereotypes.
Historically, boys were believed to outperform girls in math, but in the past few decades the gender gap has narrowed down significantly. With a more diverse workforce, scientific and technological products, services, and solutions are likely to be better designed and better represent all users.
Finally, ensuring our institution is up to date with the latest policies on equal opportunities will be essential to convey our message consistently and accordingly.

Although women are likely to obtain better qualifications as students, they do not choose to be science workers because they do not see sciences as areas where creativity could be applied. Nevertheless, Sciences are in need of creativity.

GENDER BIAS
IMAGINE A PERSON WHO IS... ... an engineer, a soldier, a doctor, a teacher, a nurse
Loosely, we tend to visualize men in the first three cases. Whereas for the rest of them we tend to identify women. Nevertheless, nowadays there are women and men developing those professions. In Spain, we apply the generic male gender to include indistinctly male and female gender in words. But it is inside our brains where we are not so inclusive when it comes to sex gender. And, this begs the question, does it happen to English people or are Spanish people influenced by our language? I am afraid that it is not only a linguistic question.
Tracey Chevalier CRISTINA ÁLVAREZ PÉREZ
I'VE LOVED BOOKS SINCE I LEARNED TO READ. DURING ALL THESE YEARS I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO READ WONDERFUL STORIES THAT HAVE EDUCATED, ENTERTAINED AND ALSO INSPIRED ME. IT IS FOR THIS REASON THAT IN A MAGAZINE ABOUT WOMEN, I COULD NOT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO THANK THE WORK OF MY FAVOURITE WRITER, WHO HAS ALWAYS TREATED WOMEN IN HER BOOKS WITH SUCH DELICACY AND AFFECTION.
Tracey Chevalier is an American author who has written a lot of bestselling books where History and the female world go hand in hand. Now she lives in London. Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Lady and the Unicorn are two of her most acclaimed books.
Falling Angels A novel about two different families: the Waterhouses who admire Queen Victoria and the Victorian traditions, and the Colemans, who look for a more modern society. Two families that will face the changes in society throug the lives of their daughters. If you want to read about the fight for women's suffrage, you must read this book!
The Virgin Blue It is the story of two women, Ella Turner and Isabelle du Moulin, born in two different centuries but with a common story, where the blue colour plays an important role that will change their lives forever. I strongly recommend these books because we do not always have the opportunity to read such well-told stories about women. Enjoy your reading!

Her most important contribution to the feminist cause was her widely known 'A Vindication of the Rights of Woman'. In this work, the author argues that women are not naturally inferior to men, but it only appears to be so because they lack education. She suggested that both men and women should be treated as rational beings and imagined social order founded on reason.

LP Encarnación Lupiañez Álvarez Laura Pergolizzi is a singer-songwriter who operates under the stage name LP. The artist emerged in the early 2000s with a blend of vulnerability and swagger. One of her latest albums, “Lost on You”, launched the artist to the stardom. Born in New York in 1981, descendant of Italians, Laura was raised listening to her mother’s vibrant voice. Since an early age she sang with her mother who was a remarkable opera singer. Not only did she inherite her mother’s voice, but also she was nourished with a steady diet of The Doors, The Pretenders, Nirvana and Jeff Buckley. What makes her special, apart from her voice, is the way she expresses her identity. She does not define herself as a man or a woman but as a person, and she regrets not having revealed her homosexuality before her mother’s death. It was because of her male appearance that discographies did not bid for the singer. The fact that companies have stereotypes and prejudices has led to the loss of many artists. But her hopes were not dashed. She went on composing lyrics and did not get discarded from the music industry. Great pop-music artists in the 90’s such as Rihana, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, Rita Ora, among others, have sung Laura’s songs. With a misterious look, short curly hair and a black caravel tattoed on her chest, her stylish outlook evokes a vintage portrait from the XVIII century. Definetely, her transformation is a reference for the LGBT community and so is for many people with big dreams to chase.
There are hard situations in any human being's life, but there are particular events that especially affect women, on which they have no power to decide. This feature was filmed in 2007, and directed by Cristian Mongiu. The drama is set in Romania over the last years of the communist period, when laws were still banning abortion. The daunting experience of two girls involved in a clandestine abortion will make you reflect upon other people’s feelings. You’ll appreciate this award-winning film, although it is painfully heart-wrenching.
