Kalank ETERNAL LOVE
THE PLOT
Kalank is an epic-historical and emotional drama that goes beyond the borders. It is set before Independence, revolves around lovers separated by circumstances and their faith, and involves inter-generational revenge.
THE CHARACTERS
Alia plays the role of Roop. As Karan Johar describes her, “to love her is to love fire.” Madhuri Dixit portrays Bahar Begum, an enchanting courtesan. Sanjay Dutt’s character is Balraj Chaudhry, an iron-fisted patriarch who upholds traditions. Varun Dhawan plays the role of Zafar, an intense man who takes challenges head on. Aditya Roy Kapoor is the virtuous Dev Chaudhry, the epitome of nobility. Sonakshi plays the role of Satya Chaudhry: pure, elegant and filled with love. PVR MOVIES FIRST
he word ‘kalank’ can have many interpretations. It might mean love to some and a blemish to others. You have to decide after watching the film. – Karan Johar, Director
PAGE 4
DID YOU KNOW? Kalank is Dharma Productions’ most expensive film to date. The film was conceptualised by Karan Johar and his father Yash Johar in 2003. Yash Johar’s death the following year was one of the reasons it was put on the backburner. Yash Johar even visited Pakistan to pick up the nuances from the place to recreate an authentic ambience for the shoot. Actress Sridevi was initially signed for the character role played by Madhuri Dixit. Madhuri Dixit and Alia Bhatt will perform a Kathak duet in the film, for which Alia has trained under Birju Maharaj.
The Collection
Karan Johar is known for his romantic films that portray complex personal relationships. He made his directorial debut with the blockbuster romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), which earned him the Filmfare Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay. His next two films were the ensemble dramas Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), both very successful in the overseas market. His social drama My Name Is Khan (2010) earned him his second Filmfare Award for Best Director. These, along with the several successful films he has produced under the Dharma Productions banner, have established him as one of the leading director-producers in Hindi cinema.
Actress Kiara Advani will be seen in a cameo. One of the dances in the film has been mounted on a large scale, with 500 background dancers.

Release Date: April 26, 2019 Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy Language: English Director: Anthony and Joe Russo Cast: Robert Downey Junior, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo Studio: Marvel Studios Pic Courtesy: Marvel Studios
THE BACK STORY: Avengers: Infinity War became the highest-grossing movie worldwide last year with over $2 billion. Avengers: Endgame, its follow up, has frequently been described as a ‘culmination’ because on top of everything, it is also the climax of the MCU’s entire existence, which has spanned a decade and 22 movies (including Captain Marvel). It’s all built to this. PVR MOVIES FIRST

he thing that’s most important to us is that we preserve the surprise of the narrative. When I was a kid and saw The Empire Strikes Back at 11am on the day it opened… It so profoundly moved me because I didn’t know a damn thing about the story I was going to watch. We’re trying to replicate that experience. – Joe and Anthony Russo, Directors
THE PLOT: After the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to undo Thanos’ actions and restore order to the universe.

The brothers, who always work together, started with the little-seen but highly regarded Welcome to Collinwood in 2002, then moved on to You, Me and Dupree in 2006. Eight years after that, the Russo Brothers saw their careers take off.
THE CAST: The film boasts a great cast, with Robert Downey Jr in the titular role and a supporting cast filled out by veterans like Gwyneth Paltrow, Brie Larson, Scarlett Johannson and Josh Brolin. Endgame will likely also act as a swan song for some specific Avengers and the actors that play them, so the directors have devoted time and attention to giving strong emotional moments to them.
Between 2014 and 2019, they have directed four Marvel Cinematic Universe films: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

GUEST INTERVIEW
Director
Romeo Akbar Walter promises to be a gritty espionage thriller. Robbie Grewal, the film’s director, takes us behind the scenes:
character depicted in the film is fictional, but through him, you learn very real facts about how cross-border information is gleaned. It’s a nuanced, layered role.
You’re returning to direction after a long break Yes, my last film was Aloo Chaat (2009). For a very long time, I did not have a story to tell, so I did not. This story felt both interesting and convincing, and I knew I wanted to make it into a film.
How did you prepare for the shoot Before we took our first shot, we spent months doing our research on the facts, since this film is drawn from a real event. As a director, it was my responsibility to ensure that we recreate that time zone accurately. Locking the looks and disguises also required meticulous planning, and of course, finalising John Abraham’s personality and mindset for the three characters he plays.
How did the idea for Romeo Akbar Walter emerge? My father was in the army, and had many interesting stories to share. It was during one of my discussions with him that the idea for this film clicked. In fact, if you go back and research the 1971 war, you’ll find not one but dozens of stories worth telling. Is the story drawn from real events The story sets into motion some nine months before the Indo-Pak war. The background and setting of the film are therefore totally real. MARTIN SCORSESE
Masters@Work
One of Hollywood’s most important directors, Martin Scorsese is a living legend in the truest sense. His gritty, hard-hitting films virtually defined the state of modern American cinema during the 1970s and ‘80s. Over the course of his career, he’s created indelible works bursting with anger, violence, fragility, care, and wonder. Never content to stick with one story mode, he’s worked with a wide range of styles and substance. So, here’s a quick primer on the man some like to call the American Fellini. Favourite Themes: Whether making gangster films, period films or biopics, Scorsese explores aspects of identity and violence. His protagonists are often loners in a chaotic world trying to make sense of the madness around them, grappling with issues of guilt, penance and spiritual enlightenment. Nostalgia plays a big part in Scorsese’s films, but so do regret and loss. Taxi driver and Raging Bull, with De Niro as the protagonist, portrayed masculinity at its most violent, pitiful and tragic. His Sympathy for Female Characters: Interestingly, blonde leading ladies are usually depicted as angelic and ethereal in Scorsese films. They wear white in their first scene and are photographed in slowmotion. Brunettes in Scorsese’s world represent stability and settlement. But whatever their hair colour, women are given characters you care about. In Raging Bull and Taxi Driver, they are innocent, pure. In The Wolf of Wall Street, the woman is listed as one of her husband’s possessions, alongside his cars and various houses. Flashlighting: No one uses this technique as effectively as Scorsese. He bleaches the image to white, and for a moment you only see the character’s pupils. The light hits the back of the retina and is reflected. The result is haunting at times. Watch out for this one in Aviator. Spotlighting: If it’s a Scorsese film, it is likely to feature mob bosses. And his portrayal of these mean PVR MOVIES FIRST
machines is to spotlight them from above or reach up to him from below. It implies a position of power, and gives them a menacing appearance. Long tracking shots: Scorsese uses them to see the situation from the point of view of the character, letting you experience exactly what the person is experiencing at that moment. This is a very effective device, especially because the director likes to begin his films with segments taken from the middle or end of the story. An unforgettable example of the long track is LaMotta in Raging bull, walking from the changing room to the ring. His Love for the Rolling Stones: Music has been a consistent factor in Scorsese’s directing career, with his use of The Rolling Stone’s Jumpin’ Jack Flash in Mean Streets becoming one of the most famous scenes in his career. And Gimme Shelter, another song by the Stones, has appeared in three of Scorsese’s films: Goodfellas, Casino, and The Departed. 3 More Martin Trademarks • New York City is often the main setting in films. • He likes to portray corrupt authority figures. • His characters use a lot of profanity.
