and from that moment it stayed with her till she decided to make a movie based on it.
Apna Time AAyega
THE PLOT
A musical drama that follows the journey of a gifted street rapper from the slums of Mumbai, who becomes the face of the city’s underground rap music. Despite being discouraged over and over again, he believes “apna time aayega”.
THE IDEA
‘Gully Boy’ is based on the life story of street rappers Vivian Fernandes aka Divine and Naved Shaikh aka Naezy, whose song ‘Mere Gully Mein’ took the rapping world by storm. Director Zoya Akhtar says she saw a video of Divine and Naezy in 2014, and that’s the first time she actually saw a real authentic “gully rap”. It got stuck in her head PVR MOVIES FIRST
elhi had a bustling Punjabi rap/hip-hop scene. But they made songs about cars, alcohol, romance. We rapped about our gully, our city Mumbai. It was genuine, authentic Indian hip-hop. - Divine, Rapper
PAGE 4
The Collection he film is not a biopic of Naezy and Divine. This is a completely fictional story. It is inspired by their music and they worked with me on the film to make it look authentic. They were the people who took me into their lives and showed me how it’s done. There are a lot of things from their lives throughout the film, but this is not an exact biopic. - Zoya Akhtar, Director
Director and screenwriter Zoya Akhtar is known for her socially relevant, sensitive films that portray complex personal relationships. After completing a diploma in filmmaking from NYU, she assisted directors such as Mira Nair, Tony Gerber and Dev Benegal, before turning writer-director in her own right.
She has directed movies such as Luck by Chance (2009), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and Sheila Ki Jawani, a segment of Bombay Talkies (2013). She has co-written Talaash (2012) alongside Reema Kagti. She then went on to direct Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), a film based on a dysfunctional Punjabi family.
DID YOU KNOW
• Besides hitting the screens, the film will have its world premiere at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival that runs from February 1 to 7. • Sung by Ranveer Singh, the smash hit song “Apna Time Aayega” is composed by rapper Divine and Dub Sharma. • Ranveer Singh has sung four songs for the film. He worked for 10 months with Divine and Naezy to understand the nuances of rapping.

Alita: Battle Angel
Tagline: An Angel Falls, A Warrior Rises. The Story: ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, is an epic adventure of hope and empowerment. When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. hat I admire most about Alita is her sensitivity. She believes she’s someone completely insignificant and goes on to discover, not only is she someone significant, she’s someone extraordinary with extraordinary capabilities, someone who could have the power to not only save the lower world but all worlds and all people. it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love. Key People: Alita is co-written and produced by James Cameron — who wanted to direct the project himself, but was too deeply involved with Avatar to find time for it. Director Robert Rodriguez is acclaimed for his stylized action films including Sin City, Desperado and Spy Kids. American actress Rosa Bianca Salazar (July 16, 1985) plays Alita. Best known for her “The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials,” she has acted in major TV series such as “The

Divergent Series: Insurgent,” and “American Horror Story: Murder House.” The Amazing Alita: Alita: Battle Angel intrigues the audience about the stakes the heroine is being faced with as she swings between her human desires and her advanced robotic strength. She takes on villains such as the hunter-warrior Zapan, played by Deadpool’s Ed Skrein, and Scrapyard Businessman Vector, portrayed by Mahershala Ali, who orders her destruction. In between the confrontations with these characters, Alita competes in the world’s brutal sport of Motorball, which promises to be an incredible action sequence.

Trivia 01
The main character, even though it’s a live action film, is done with CG animation and was shot in 3D using the stereo imaging system that James Cameron had been developing for his documentaries.
02
James Cameron confirmed in an interview that this is a combination of the first four books in Yukito Kishiro’s series of manga books (“Motorball” from books 3 and 4, and the story from books 1 and 2).
03
The film is based on the nine-volume Japanese manga “Gunnm” written and illustrated by Yukito Kishiro. The comic book ran from 1990 to 1995 and was released in North America under the title “Battle Angel Alita.”
04
The motion capture suit which Rosa Salazar wore for her titular role had 53 marks tracked by infrared cameras to get the most fluid, and realistic movements.
05
‘Alita’ means ‘Little Wing’ in Spanish.
Intense action: The character is brought to life via a motion-capture performance from Salazar, who says she was “surprised at how much of me is in there” when she saw the results. She’s the centre of a fully-realised sci-fi world, which imagines futuristic cities floating above a decimated Earth. PVR MOVIES FIRST

In his upcoming movie Vice, Bale has undergone an incredible transformation to play the role of former American Vice President Dick Cheney. He has gained 40 pounds, bleached his eyebrows and bulked up his neck muscles for the part.
Christian Bale performs most of his stunts on his own. For ‘The Dark Knight,’ he didn’t use a body double for the stunt in which Batman dives off one building and crashes into the other. Bale was very close to landing the role of Jack Dawson in ‘Titanic’ but director James Cameron didn’t want two British lead actors playing the two leads, who were both supposed to be American. Known to be a very private person, he does not attend parties and has appeared only in a handful of talk shows in his entire life.

How The Oscars Got Their Name And 7 More Fun, Fascinating Facts About Hollywood’s Iconic Awards • Though there are several different stories that claim to tell the origin of the nickname “Oscar,” the most common attributes the nickname to a comment made by Margaret Herrick, a librarian at the Academy. Upon first seeing the statuette, she commented that the statuette looked like her Uncle Oscar. The nickname stuck and was officially used by the Academy beginning in 1939. • The list of hosts for the Academy Awards ceremony is dotted with prestigious names such as Will Rogers, Frank Capra, Jack Benny, Fred Astaire, Jack Lemmon and David Letterman. However, one man has dominated Academy Award history; Bob Hope hosted a whopping 18 Academy Award ceremonies. • Weighing 8.5 pounds and standing 13.5 inches in height, the coveted Oscar statuette is made of gold-plated britannium. However, between 1942 and the end of World War II, the statuettes were made of plaster to conserve metal. Winners of these statuettes got the actual trophy after the war. • It depicts a knight, holding a sword, standing on a reel of film which has five spokes, representing the 5 original branches of the Academy--actors, directors, producers, technicians, and writers. In 1949, the Academy started to number the statuettes, starting with number 501. • The first Academy Awards, which took place at a private dinner for about 270 people, were presented in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Los Angeles, California. Today, the ceremony takes place at the Dolby Theatre (around the corner from the Roosevelt). • In 1940, the LA Times broke the Academy’s embargo and published the names of all the Oscar winners prior to the ceremony. As a result, the Academy introduced the sealed envelope tradition that is present to this day. • At the 61st Academy Awards, held in 1989, the Academy decided to replace the trademark phrase “And the winner is...” with the phrase “And the Oscar goes to...” Notice it this time! • In a strange turn of events, Charlie Chaplin’s movie Limelight, which was produced in 1952, won an Academy Award in 1972— 20 years after its first release. According to the Academy’s rules at the time, a movie could not be considered for an Academy Award until it had played in Los Angeles. When Limelight finally played at a theater in Los Angeles in 1972, it became eligible for an award. PVR MOVIES FIRST

• Lupita Nyong’o’s brilliantly moving performance in the multi-Oscar-winning film 12 Years A Slave landed her an Oscar in 2014 for Best Supporting Actress. She gave a heartwarming speech with a great ending line many will remember: “When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child, that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”
• Youngest actress to win an Oscar: Tatum O’Neal, who was 10-year-old when she won the Best Supporting Actress award for Paper Moon in 1974. • Oldest person to win the Award: Christopher Plummer for Best Supporting Actor in 2012 for his performance in ‘Beginners’, at 82.
Memorable Moments: • Charlie Chaplin made a joyous return to Hollywood after a two-decade absence over alleged Communist ties. Chaplin received an honorary Oscar in 1972, along with an emotional 12-minute standing ovation.
• Heath Ledger’s father, mother, and sister accepted the late Australian actor’s posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his iconic performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight in 2009. The moment was obviously a bittersweet recognition for an incredible talent that passed way too young.
• At the 2017 Academy Awards, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway went on stage to announce the award for Best Picture but they had the wrong envelope. Beatty had the envelope for Best Actress, which went to La La Land’s Emma Stone. In a moment of mass confusion, La La Land’s team came up on stage, took the award, and began giving their acceptance speeches before someone alerted that Moonlight was the actual winner.
OSCAR AWARDS 2019
The awards will take place on Sunday 24 February 2019, and will air live on The ABC Television Network. Yorgos Lanthimos’s period drama The Favourite and Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma secured 10 nominations each. Both films have been shortlisted for the prestigious Best Picture award, along with Black Panther (a popular choice), BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, A Star is Born and Vice. Olivia Colman is in pole position to land Best Actress for her superb performance as Queen Anne while co-stars Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone will battle it out for the Best Supporting Actress. Signature Spielberg: 7 filmmaking techniques of the iconic director
Masters@Work
“The Spielberg Face” was first used to create effect in Jaws. The idea is simple, zoom in on a character as they are looking at something. Most of the time, this character is amazed, and the thing that they are looking at is revealed to the audience slowly, after the character shows their expression. Watch Jurassic Park, Close Encounters, and The Color Purple to see how often the director employs this technique. One of his favourite camera angles is using a mirror or window reflection to capture his characters indirectly. Typically the character is watching something through the window, and that scene is reflected for the audience to see. Spielberg also uses rearview mirrors in cars to frame and show action, such as in Jurassic Park when the T-Rex is chasing the Jeep. Just about every main character in a Spielberg film either has “daddy issues,” or they have kids with whom they don’t have the best of relationships. This probably stems from the director’s own experience —his parents divorced when he was 19. In The Sugarland Express, two deadbeat parents run from the law to try and prevent their son from being taken into foster care. Close Encounters is full of neglectful parenting. We all know about Indiana Jones’ rocky relationship with his father from The Last Crusade, and in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It’s Indiana’s turn to experience the difficulties of being a dad. War of the Worlds is basically Tom Cruise’s attempts to reconcile with his kids. Spielberg is one of the first directors to use bright lights to create a sense of promise or danger. In many of his scenes, you’ll notice streams of light that pour in and leave the characters in silhouette. Jurassic Park is full of interesting background lighting, especially once the storm hits. Minority Report is an interesting canvas of dark and PVR MOVIES FIRST
bright, glowing lights. Even in Lincoln, Spielberg pays special attention to the contrast between the dark and bright, glowing white light. In Spielberg films, foreigners speak English in their respective foreign accents. There is no logical reason why Germans in World War 2 would chat in English, or why Oskar Schindler would speak to Stern in English, but in Spielberg’s films they do so that we can understand them. He likes to show the hero as larger than a bad character, so you’ll often see the two standing side by side, with the hero looking taller and more dominant. All his films, except The Color Purple, have music by the iconic composer John Williams. His main themes for the Indiana Jones series, Jurassic Park, E.T., Close Encounters and Jaws (not to mention the Star Wars and Harry Potter films) are some of the most memorable of the post-Hollywood blockbuster era.
