Specialized chips are a growing area of research for implementing hard learning algorithms, as hardware limitations begin to slow down, and both established players and startups compete to build the successor of the GPU, a specialized graphics chip industry that has become the workhorse of AI.

There is a method to the madness here. Currently, getting enough cores to run large-scale deep learning applications means connecting the banks of GPUs together. But switching data between these chips can be a major drain on speed and power efficiency because the wires that connect them are relatively slow.

Building a total of 400,000 cores into a single chip should surround that hurdle, but there are reasons not to, and Cerebral needs to come up with some clever hacks to overcome those obstacles.

Regular computer chips are made using a process called photolithography to insert transistors on the surface of a layer of silicon. Layers are inches across, so multiple chips can be built on them and then split apart. But at 8.5 inches, the WSE uses the entire layer for the entire chiffon.

The problem is that for standard chip manufacturing processes, any defects in manufacturing require digging up some processors in the hundreds, which for Cerebral is to scrap the entire layer. The company built on unnecessary circuits has some flaws to turn it around, but the chip can turn them around.

The other big problem with a large chip is that the company has had to create a proprietary water-cooling system that can remove processors with enormous heat. This means that no connections and packaging are made for large chips, which is not sold as a WSE stand-alone component, but as part of a pre-packaged server that has cooling technology.

There are no details yet on costs or performance, but some customers are already testing prototypes and the results are optimistic, according to Cerebral. CEO and co-founder Andrew Feldman told Fortune that initial tests show they are shortening training time from months to minutes.

We'll have to wait until the shipment of the first system in September to see if those claims stand. But Feldman told ZDNet that the process by which engineers

build neural networks can help their chip design become more innovative. Many of the cornerstones of this process for example, solving data in batches rather than individual data points are guided by the hardware limitations of GPUs rather than machine learning theory, but their chip eliminates those barriers.
