Greetings! Thank you for picking up a copy of Leisure Magazine—Prince William County’s go-to source for all things recreation. Albert Camus wrote, “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” The vibrant colors and crisp air beckon us outside. There’s no better place to experience the enchantment of fall than at one of our 80 parks and historic sites. Plan a visit to the New Neabsco Regional Park in Woodbridge where you can stroll the stately grounds of Rippon Lodge Historic Site, one of the County’s oldest buildings, and traverse nearly a mile of majestic wetlands on the County’s largest boardwalk. Take in 18 holes at Prince William Golf Course, cast a line at Silver Lake Regional Park, or tour the Ben Lomond Farm House, that was transformed into a Confederate hospital after the First Battle of Manassas during the American Civil War. In addition to over 5,000 acres of parkland, we offer hundreds of fitness and instructional classes for all ages and abilities. Adapted programs and accommodations are available for those with varying abilities. If you are looking for a nature-based pre-school where mud and bugs are celebrated, consider the Grō program at James S. Long Regional Park, a curriculum that has been lauded by Virginia First Lady, Pam Northam. We also offer other state-licensed preschool programs at Chinn Aquatics & Fitness and Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Centers as well as at Veterans Memorial Park. The fall season is also brimming with special events such as the Annual Pooch Plunge at Veterans Memorial Park on September 8th, the Kids for Kids Triathlon at Chinn Aquatic and Fitness Center on September 15th, Arts Alive! at the Hylton Performance Arts Center on September 15th, the 5th Annual Brentsville Day at the Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre on September 28th and The First Tee® Golf Tournament at Forest Greens Golf Course on October 14th. And don’t forget to shop the Dale City Farmer’s Market on Sunday mornings for a wide selection of artisan goods and the freshest produce in Prince William County: www.dalecitymarket.com Take advantage of our new pass plans at Chinn Aquatics & Fitness and Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Centers. We now offer full use of both facilities for one low price and senior and children discounts are now offered all year! Take advantage of our Pass Sale on October 1st-10th for 20% off adult primary memberships. Come see the enhancements at each of our Centers, including an additional family changing room at Chinn Aquatics & Fitness Center and a new group fitness TRX® system at Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center. Finally, voters will have the opportunity to vote on a Park Bond Referendum on November 5th. The Board of County Supervisors is proposing to sell up to $41,000,000 in general obligation bonds for the purpose of improving local outdoor parks services. The proposed project list includes trails, parks, open space, and accessibility improvements. For more information please visit: www.pwcparks.org/bond. I am grateful you chose Prince William County for your recreation needs and wish you and your family a vibrant fall season. Our passionate staff is committed to ensuring you have an exceptional experience. Please let us know how we’re doing and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. May you strive to be your best self with Prince William County Parks, Recreation & Tourism as your partner!

There are moments when all anxiety and stated toil are becalmed in the infinite leisure and repose of nature. Henry David Thoreau

This autumn explore the 50 miles+ of recreational trails, greenways, and water trails in Prince William County. Numerous studies have concluded that exposure to outdoor green spaces can reduce depression, anxiety and health risks such as high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. A new study* found that a two-hour “dose” of nature a week significantly boosts health and wellbeing, even if you simply sit and enjoy the peace. Prince William Parks, Recreation & Tourism is partners with Park Rx America, a non-profit organization working with parks and healthcare professionals to “make it easy” to prescribe parks and other protected areas to their patients. Preschool Curriculum

Nature is an important element in building the foundation of a child’s learning. Not only does nature aid in a child’s fitness and overall physical health, it also helps in moral development, academic learning, as well as parent, child, and community interactions. Our Nature Preschool at Grō will provide a supportive, safe learning environment to encourage discovery, question-asking and experimentation. Using both indoor and outdoor classrooms, our nature preschool will be filled with sensory experiences, natural objects, artifacts, trail activities and art materials so that students will have the opportunity to utilize all five senses. Our curriculum will be enhanced by the nature experience, but will also be geared to developing cognitive growth, motor skills, and problem solving through hands on learning. As we prepare your child for their Kindergarten experience, our program will also incorporate language through songs, stories and dramatic play as well as cultivate social skills and positive self image through cooperative learning and play.

By using our developmentally appropriate curriculum, our experienced and educated teachers will incorporate activities to strengthen language, literacy, fine motor and cognitive s kills. Children will become eager learners through both self-guided and teacher-led activities in our unique indoor and outdoor classroom environments. Our comprehensive, state-licensed preschool curriculum includes subject areas in math, science, motor development, social studies, language, art, music and self/social development.

Outdoor Classrooms

Our outdoor classroom will have a variety of stations for preschoolers to explore music, art, movement, gardening and the natural world around them. The outdoor classroom provides an environment for children to collaborate, be inquisitive and it promotes a lifelong connection and appreciation to the child’s natural surroundings.

NEABSCO CREEK BOARDWALK

Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail Neabsco Creek Boardwalk 15125 Blackburn Road, Woodbridge, VA 22191 ABOUT THE NEABSCO CREEK BOARDWALK: The ž-mile boardwalk traverses Neabsco Creek, allowing hikers access to wetlands where the tall grasses and marsh filter pollution from the river and provide a rich habitat for great blue herons, wood ducks, mallards, sparrow, and red-winged blackbirds, just to name a few of the winged wildlife known to populate the area.

The PARKING AREA for the Neabsco Creek Boardwalk is NOW OPEN at 15125 Blackburn Road across from Rippon Lodge Historic site. This accessible parking area features a paved pathway all the way to the north landing of the boardwalk.

The walkway is part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, which was established by Congress in 1983 designating an 800-mile trail network stretching from the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania to the Potomac River, winding through Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia. www.pwcparks.org
