Thank you for picking up a copy of Leisure Magazine—Prince William County’s go-to source for all things recreation. Poet William Cullen Bryant wrote that “autumn is the year’s last, loveliest smile.” Indeed, nothing makes my heart grin like seeing the splash of vibrant colors across the tree canopies or breathing in the crisp, sweet air. There’s no better place to experience the beauty of fall than at one of our 80 parks and historic sites. In addition to over 5,000 acres of parkland we offer hundreds of fitness and instructional classes for all ages and abilities, children’s programming, adaptive programs, and one-of-a-kind special events. I encourage you to experience all we have to offer. Play 18 holes at Forest Greens Golf Disc Golf Course, cast a line at Silver Lake Park, walk the wildflower meadows at the newly constructed Rollins Ford Park, or tour the Ben Lomond Farmhouse, once used as a field hospital during the Civil War.
Quality programs in your backyard abound. Join our Zumba Dance Party (see pg. 20) on September 29th at the Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, carve pumpkins (see pg. 27) at Veterans Park on October 26th, play Haunted Mini Golf (see pg. 27) at Locust Shade Park on October 26th27th, bring a blanket and your popcorn appetite for a Movies in the Park (see pg. 27), immerse yourself in colonial living history demonstrations focused on the Revolutionary War at the Road To Victory (see pg. 23) at Rippon Lodge on November 2nd, or shop for handmade crafts at the annual Holiday Market (see pg. 23) on December 7th. For families with adaptive needs, join one of our Sensory Art classes at the Birchdale (see pg. 8) Recreation Center or Soccer Skills and Drills (see pg. 8) at Hellwig Park. The fall season is also brimming with special events such as the Kids for Kids Triathlon (see pg. 20) at Chinn Aquatic and Fitness Center, Arts Alive! (see pg. 8) at the Hylton Performance Arts Center on September 14th, Brentsville Day bluegrass festival at the Brentsville Courthouse Centre on September 28th (see pg. 22), and the First Tee Golf Tournament at Forest Greens Golf Course (see pg. 33), and the 3rd annual Holiday Walk of Lights at the Neabsco Boardwalk in December (see pg. 24).
If you are looking a nature-based preschool where mud and bugs are celebrated, consider the Grō program at Long Park. We also offer other state-licensed preschool programs at Chinn and Sharron Baucom Dale City Aquatic and Fitness Centers.
Don’t forget to shop the Dale City Farmer’s Market on Sunday mornings for a wide selection of artisan goods and the freshest produce in Prince William County: pwcparks.info/farmersmarket.
I am grateful you chose Prince William County for your recreation needs and wish you and your family a vibrant fall season. Our passionate staff is committed to ensuring you have an exceptional experience. Please let us know how we’re doing and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
May you strive to be your best self with Prince William County Parks and Recreation as your guide!

Pilates Principles 2024
Fall Free Educational Workshop
Ages 14+ | Sharron Baucom Dale City Rec Center
Breathing—Most Pilates exercises coordinate with the breath, and using the breath properly is an integral part of Pilates exercise. Breath is likely the most important principle; Joseph Pilates stressed that above all, you should learn how to breathe correctly. Free educational workshop for customers who are currently registered in the Pilates Reformer Program. “Breathing is the first act of life and the last. Our life depends on it.” –Joseph Pilates
Concentration Concentration allows you to pay attention to your entire body - knowing what all
the parts of your body are doing at any given moment. To do Pilates movements correctly, you must focus full attention to your muscles, body position and your breathing. For Joseph, “concentration” meant more than just the attention required to successfully perform each exercise. Free educational workshop for customers who are currently registered in the Pilates Reformer Program.”

Each week kids will engage in an organized, goal-oriented running program that combines instruction on key running concepts with practical demonstrations of and participation in running activities. Kids will develop character skills, such as good sportsmanship, perseverance, keeping a positive attitude, setting and achieving goals, and understanding the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Kids Run This Town training
program lasts one hour and are divided into three main areas. Warm-up and discussion, drill of the day, and end of class game. We want children to leave practice both sweaty and smiling. Participants will be encouraged to engage in running/walking or other physical activities every other day to absorb the concept of regular physical activity. Meeting once a week for 60 minutes, participants will delve into the six research and evidence-based pillars that form the core of the Mini Marathon program, establishing a framework to cultivate a dynamic running community. This community is centered around promoting children’s physical activity, fostering healthy habits, and providing a strong sense of belonging to all participants. As a culmination of their efforts, by the end of this 8-week program, kids will have successfully completed a full marathon, covering a distance of 26.2 miles. Parents will have the opportunity to track their young athletes’ progress throughout the program using an innovative parent portal. Join us as we immerse ourselves in the world of Mini Marathoners, where we aim to instill a genuine love for running in every participant. Lace up your shoes, embark on this exciting journey, and let’s build a lasting passion for the joy of running together! No class on Nov 28.
