Greetings! Thank you for picking up a copy of Leisure Magazine—Prince William County’s go-to source for all things recreation. There is no better place to experience the beauty of winter than right here in your own backyard. Prince William’s natural allure extends from the graceful hills of the Bull Run Mountains to the wooded shores of the Potomac River. For those who don’t mind the frosty air, venture out and explore our 55-mile network of hiking trails, including the Neabsco Regional Park Boardwalk in Woodbridge and the Occoquan Greenway at Lake Ridge Park. Meander the hallowed grounds of Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park or bird watch for Red Headed woodpeckers at Silver Lake Park. Looking to stay indoors? We offer hundreds of fitness and instructional classes for all ages and abilities at Chinn Aquatic and Fitness Center and Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center. New for 2020, we’ll be offering First Day Hikes (pgs. 28 & 44) on January 1st. Following our commitment to inclusion, we offer adaptive programs and accommodations for those with varying abilities such as Adaptive Egg Hunt (pg. 25). Take advantage of our new Aquatic and Fitness Centers pass plans. We now offer full use of both facilities for one low price and senior and children discounts are now offered all year! And as spring arrives there are Spring Break Camps (pg.20), and Hippity Hoppity Pool Hunt (pg. 15). Come out the Dale City winter Farmer’s Market on Sunday mornings between 10-1 for a unique selection of artisan goods and select produce: dalecitymarket.com. I am grateful you chose Prince William County for your recreation needs and wish you and your family a prosperous new year. Our passionate staff is committed to ensuring you have an exceptional experience. Please let us know how we’re doing and didn’t hesitate to ask for assistance. May you strive to be your best self with Prince William County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism as your partner!

Nature is an important element in building the foundation of a child’s learning. Not only does nature aid in a child’s fitness and overall physical health, it also helps in moral development, academic learning, as well as parent, child, and community interactions. Our Nature Preschool at Grō will provide a supportive, safe learning environment to encourage discovery, question-asking and experimentation. Using both indoor and outdoor classrooms, our nature preschool will be filled with sensory experiences, natural objects, artifacts, trail activities and art materials so that students will have the opportunity to utilize all five senses. Our curriculum will be enhanced by the nature experience, but will also be geared to developing cognitive growth, motor skills, and problem solving through hands on learning. As we prepare your child for their Kindergarten experience, our program will also incorporate language through songs, stories and dramatic play as well as cultivate social skills and positive self image through cooperative learning and play.

Preschool Curriculum

By using our developmentally appropriate curriculum, our experienced and educated teachers will incorporate activities to strengthen language, literacy, fine motor and cognitive s kills. Children will become eager learners through both self-guided and teacherled activities in our unique indoor and outdoor classroom environments. Outdoor Classrooms

Our outdoor classroom will have a variety of stations for preschoolers to explore music, art, movement, gardening and the natural world around them. The outdoor classroom provides an environment for children to collaborate, be inquisitive and it promotes a lifelong connection and appreciation to the child’s natural surroundings.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION 6TH ANNUAL PRINCE WILLIAM - MANASSAS HISTORY SYMPOSIUM AGE 10+

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT AT BRENTSVILLE COURTHOUSE

Our community has a long and rich history. Founded in 1731, Prince William County is one of the oldest counties in Northern Virginia. Join several local historic organizations as we celebrate this history at our Sixth Annual Prince William-Manassas History Symposium. Topics include: - Freedman’s Bureau in PWC by Bill Backus - The Legend of “Stonewall” by Dr. Chris Mackowski - Prince William County’s Frontiersman: Simon Kenton by Mark Wilcox - The Life of Robert Carter III, Virginia’s First Emancipator by Robert Teagle - WWII Lady Spies of the OSS by Ellen Butler

As Prince William County’s seat for 70 years, Brentsville’s Courthouse and Jail was the focus of law and order in the community. Take a tour of the Brentsville’s public lot and learn about the laws, crime, and punishment of the 19th century while you hear about some of the high-profile cases that were tried on-site.

WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE: A 100 YEAR STRUGGLE FOR EQUAL RIGHTS AGES 10+

Join author and historian Cory M. Pfarr as we examine how an agendadriven, postwar campaign against General James Longstreet’s alleged actions at the Battle of Gettysburg has been perpetuated by numerous twentieth century and modern historians for well over a century. Many have regularly misconstrued Longstreet’s performance because of his significant role there, despite the publication of hundreds of books on Gettysburg. Historians have often presented students and scholars of the war with an incomplete history of the Confederate side of battle.

Lauren Devore of Rock Creek National Park will join us for National Women’s Month. August 2020 marks 100 years of struggle for women to obtain the right to vote. Several generations of women made passage of the 19th Amendment possible. Ms. Devore will address topics of the women’s suffrage movement including the first women’s rights convention leading up to the creation of the National Woman’s Party by Alice Paul in 1916, and figures and moments that changed the momentum of the suffrage movement.
