President’s Message President’s Message It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the PWCS 120th Anniversary International Exhibition of Works on Paper, which this year was to be held at West Chester University. However, due to these unprecedented times, we decided to move the event online for everyone’s safety. Philadelphia Water Color Society is one of the very few organizations in the country that accepts works on paper, which includes an array of media like watercolor, hand pulled prints, collage, pen and ink, gouache, acrylics, pastels, charcoal and graphite drawings. Our Juror of Selection, John Salminen, an internationally renowned watercolor artist had an extremely difficult task of choosing just 100 paintings from the 488 entries, which were submitted by 280 artists from 30 states in the USA and 10 countries around the world. Our Judge of Awards, Steven Quiller, a Master Artist who is best known for his innovative approach to water media painting, selected the award winners from this impressive collection of paintings. COVID-19 has not stopped us from keeping the arts alive. Instead, we have embraced technology to bring to you a variety of events into your home. We are also introducing Zoom to bring to you a series of demos by various artists. This year our Judge of Awards, Stephen Quiller, will video tape some commentary on his selection. The video of these remarks will be posted on our website. We also decided to bring Steven Quiller’s workshop to you via Zoom in the comfort of your home and studio. In addition, our gallery talk this year is online and will be presented by Karen Delaney, a sculptor, and an art educator, who served as the Executive Director at the Chester County Art Association. Strong effort was made to continue to maintain the same monetary level of awards. The PWCS Board has been tirelessly working to make all this possible despite this year’s many challenges. I would like to thank Al Richards who has worked extremely hard to make sure that our entry process worked seamlessly. A special thanks goes out to Nishita Jain, our webmaster who has worked with each one of us on the back end to make PWCS technologically current. She is also a highly effective moderator for the Zoom sessions making every event a grand success. Rick Kowaleski, our VP1, is an extremely methodical and detail-oriented Board Member who has worked diligently on our Member Show. Madeleine Kelly wears many hats as the Catalog and Newsletter designer and has also taken over as our Interim Treasurer. A special thanks goes out to Barbara March, our Recording Secretary, Judith Hummer, Membership Chair, Jeanne Gunther, Corresponding Secretary, George Gallatig, our Plein air Director, Candace Zacher, Advertising and Sponsorship Chair, Diane Keesey, our Hospitality Chair and Jane McGovern, our Historian. This year we welcomed our newest Board member, Workshop Director, Denise Vitollo. This year we are happy to announce 6 new signature members. This status is achieved by getting accepted in two International Works on Paper shows.

Signature members enjoy the privilege to use the initials PWCS after their signatures on their paintings. A huge Congratulations to all of you! PWCS also has a proud tradition offering an outreach program sponsored by our endowments which this year provided awards to three deserving students from different art colleges in the area. Finally, I would like to thank all the members who, during their renewal process, contributed generously towards this beautiful catalog. I would like to encourage every member to get involved in this organization whose roots are part of art history. Please be sure to check out this year’s exhibition on our website www.pwcsociety.org Radhika Srinivas President, Philadelphia Water Color Society

In 1900 the Philadelphia Water Color Society was founded to offset the then common exhibition prejudice against watercolor. Chartered in 1922 as a corporation, it continued its mission of “furthering watercolor art” through varied exhibitions of elected members’ works. Today our annual exhibitions continue to present the finest in watercolor art as well as other works on paper. Over the years these exhibitions have evolved into open and juried international events. Over the years a permanent collection of over 175 works has been developed and presented to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for proper custodianship. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania archives our 119 years of records. Today over 500 international artists working in a broad variety of media on paper comprise the Philadelphia Water Color Society membership. We take great pleasure in continuing our rich artistic tradition by presenting this exhibition.
