But remember that businesses pay to be listed on the trader sites - so they are essentially the customer. KEEPING ACTIVE Start / Finish: This circular walk is around Caldicot just south of the confluence of the River Wye with the River Severn (at Chepstow). It starts and ends at Caldicot’s lovely modern slate cross in the centre. Public Transport: The nearest railway station is at Caldicot. There are buses to Caldicot centre from Newport and Chepstow. Please check Traveline and timetables before you embark on your journey. Parking: There is a car park in Caldicot and some street parking. O/S Map: Explorer 154. | Distance: 7 miles. Shorter 5 mile ‘loop’. Time: Allow all day and spend some time beside this huge River Estuary or visit The Tunnel Centre and Caldicot Castle en route. Refreshments: Stock up on food in the Caldicot Centre. There are a few handy shops at Portskewett too. Maybe take a picnic to enjoy on the way or have a coffee in Caldicot on your return. Terrain: Mainly flat and fairly level but there are steps and gates so parts are unsuitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. History: Caldicot has a wonderful Medieval Castle to explore along with its surrounding Country Park. In total contrast there are extensive views across the estuary and you will go beneath the New Severn Bridge (opened 1996) downstream of the Severn Bridge (opened 1966) and over the Severn Railway Tunnel. The route passes two historic Churches and the ruins of an old chapel. The Tunnel Centre will provide an insight into the history of the Severn railway Tunnel and you can see the Victorian pumping station that keeps the tunnel dry. There are also cottages that once belonged to the local steelworkers. The traditional fishing with nets is practiced by Lave Fisherman nearby and Ferries used to run from Black Rock to Bristol.

1: The walk starts in Caldicot at the Slate Cross. Buses stop here.

1996. Its interesting to view the bridge from all angles and from the sea-level, the gateway to England from this tiny corner of Monmouthshire. Continue round the estuary coastline, passing the woodland where the path narrows. On the left is currently a chimney and remains of a paper mill but its future is in the balance. Shortly, after another kiss-gate, fork right through the sand dunes to walk out to the end where there is a low rocky cliff. Here, the swirling river currents have eroded soft sandstone rocks into potholes on this promontory known as Sudbrook Point. 5: Walk inland. Cross the area of grass bordered by ‘earthwork’ banks reminiscent of a Roman Fort and you come across the remains of the Holy Trinity (HT) Chapel, worth studying - it is where the early monks landed after crossing the Bristol Channel.

Those who arrive by train can start at point 2. Walk through the

On a clear day you can see Somerset and the North Devon Coast plus Exmoor. 4: The route of WCP is clearly marked via a series of kiss-gates. You are now on a sea-defence wall, part of a flood alleviation scheme reinforced with massive boulders. Shortly pass beneath the beautiful second Severn Crossing (Toll-bridge) opened in

crossed the Bristol Channel before the first ‘Severn Bridge’ opened in 1966. The first Severn Bridge is also visible from here. This is the last place in Wales where ‘Lave Fishing’ using nets, still takes place in June, July and August. 6: Walk back through the car park to the path beyond the barns, crossing the bridge of the railway that led to the pier, turn left up to the lane into Portskewett. 7: Turn left along the main road passing St. Mary’s Church. 8: Take the footpath on the left through ‘Harold’s Park’ and along the backs of the houses to the community hall. Turn right then left into the ‘Cornfield Project’. Walk the full length of the field, through the path over the railway up to the road. Cross over to the bollards and follow the lane opposite to the B4245. Turn right to the roundabout and left into the Caldicot Castle Country Park. 9: The walk goes straight through to St. Mary’s Church, down the footpath left of the Church and then left along the footpath beyond. 10: Turn left again to the Slate Cross in Caldicot Centre where walk ends. How to Entertain Children

on Long Car Journeys In the past car journeys have been a source of dread, four hours limited to a stuffy, confined space en route to Cornwall, or wherever the summer may take you, can seem daunting. But fear not as there are ways to make such journeys bearable- enjoyable even! Follow our tips for a boredom free journey this summer. Technological Entertainment Technology has become a ‘babysitter’ allowing parents to step back and allow the virtual world to entertain children for hours on end. This can be a blessing, on a long motorway stretch the tablet or laptop can provide such stimulation as films and downloaded television programmes to keep children occupied for as long as required. Just make sure all devices are charged beforehand! Technology can also provide auditory entertainment for youngsters, having an audiobook on the ipod or CD provides all the benefits of reading without the car sickness. But of course if travel sickness is not an issue then long journeys can be an ideal opportunity to

What did

your child

learn today?

St Clare’s School, Porthcawl is an independent day school for boys and girls aged 2 ½ in the Nursery all the way up to 18 in the Sixth Form. Established in 1938, St. Clare’s School stands in its own magnificent grounds, in the picturesque village of Newton, near Porthcawl, ideally located for families living in nearby Bridgend, but also Cardiff, The Vale of Glamorgan and all points in between. St Clare’s is an independent day school for boys and girls aged from 2 ½ in the nursery all the way up to 18 in the Sixth Form. Emphasis is placed on a traditional approach to education that remains alive to modern ideas and techniques. Few children in Britain could boast a 16 year career in one setting without the disruption and upheaval of the usual transition points which can so often impact on academic and social progress. Recent years have seen investment in substantial new facilities to help maintain our position as the premier independent school in the area. A new all-weather surfaced, multi-useoutdoor space enables year round netball, football, hockey, basketball, tennis and other sports. Enthusiastic though they are about their school, its achievements and impressive facilities, they never lose sight of the fact that their core purpose is to ensure their children’s holistic development and wellbeing. St Clare’s educates the whole child in preparation for life, higher education and the world of work. They value your child’s happiness. St Clare’s pupils become confident, balanced, critical thinkers who are well prepared for life beyond school... wherever that may be. Headmaster, Simon Antwis, invites you and your family to come and visit them at St Clare’s and explore the opportunities that an independent education can offer at its affordable best.
