A Bee Friendly Garden Tips and advice from Wyevale Garden Centres At home in the hedgerow: A lot of plants that bees love wouldn’t look out of place on our own dinner tables, so plant some garlic mustard, wild basil, wild strawberry or blackberry seeds around your hedges and shrubs and you’ll enjoy the crop too. Don’t forget the flowerbeds: With its delicate pink or purple flowers, heather is a great choice for bringing bees to flowerbeds. Go for a simple ling heather (Calluna vulgaris), a pretty bell heather (Erica cinerea) or an unusual cross-leaved heath (Erica tetralix).

n recent years, bees have come under threat from changes in agricultural practice that have brought about the decline of many flowers that bees depend upon. So it’s become more important than ever to
give the bee a helping hand in your garden. Here’s a guide to what you can do.
Avoid highly-cultivated plants Plants like pansies, petunias, busy lizzies, double begonias and hydrangeas might look lovely but won’t offer much pollen or nectar to hungry insects. Flowers with tunnel-like petals are best avoided as they can be too long or narrow for bees to feed from.
When it comes to choosing bee-friendly plants and flowers, you’re spoilt for choice. Take a look at our beefriendly plants.
Keep your eyes open If you spot one particular plant that’s proving popular with little pollinators, make a note and add a few more around the garden next year.
Wild flowers As the name suggests, wildflowers are used to being left to their own devices. So once you’ve scattered some

SUMMER WEDDINGS
There are few things more romantic than a Welsh summer wedding. The flowers are in full bloom, the days are longer and there's a chance that the weather may hold up for an enchanting outdoor wedding ceremony. Below are a few suggestions to ensure your summer wedding guests don’t wilt or get washed away.

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland you cannot structure (such as a pagoda). So you want to get that should be okay then? Not exactly, to legally marry somewhere the venue also needs to be licensed. To do this you can apply to the council for a ‘grant of approval’, but be warned you will need to identify the space (and again it must be a permanent structure), the council must be happy that the premises are

Make the most of the sun throughout the day, ensure your running order of the day takes into consideration the sun's movements. For example, don't take your wedding pictures at noon or too close to noon, the sun is likely to be directly overhead and this may cause unflattering shadows. With this in mind, aim to take your pictures in the morning or later in the afternoon or evening. Callow Hall at Stanbrrok Abbey Hotel

Kings Arms is a beautiful long house gastropub located in the heart of Wales. A small village near Cardiff named Pentyrch is where they call home. The pub first opened in the seventeenth century, it still includes most of its original features: the stone walls, original beams and an open fireplace in the snug with a chamfered beam dated back to 1711 being just a few of them. This beautiful pub has just undergone a refurbishment with the sole intent of enhancing the original features and helping bring a little more warmth into this countryside location. New owners Owen and Helena opened in March of this year, with a great reception and welcome from all the locals in the Pentyrch village and beyond. Helena and Owen have been working in the hospitality industry for over 12 years now, Owen as a manager with various companies such as Revolution, Capital Pub company and Young's based in London and then finally with Pho in Bristol, Helena has been a head chef with Revolution, Mitchells & Butlers, Young’s and finally with Pitcher & Piano in Bristol. Owning a pub and going at it alone has always been the dream of Helena & Owen and was something they always aimed at doing, finding out the Kings Arms was available with Brains was the dream come true, everything about it was perfect from the location, the style of the pub, the village and definitely the people who make it what it is! After being open now for 5 months they know it was the right choice and are looking forward to the future as the Kings Arms isn’t only their place of work but their home.

KEEPING ACTIVE Start/Finish: This walk starts and ends at Pontypool Railway Station. Public Transport: Nearest Railway Station is at Pontypool with rail connections to Newport and Hereford. Please check ‘Traveline Wales’ and timetables before you embark on your journey. Parking: There is parking in Pontypool. Parking at the Station is for Rail Users who pay for allocated spots. If you travel there by car, the walk can start and end at Point 2. (See sketch map). O/S Map: Explorer Map 152. Distance: Main walk 6 miles. Shorter 4 mile walk returns to Pontypool Park down track from Folly Tower. Time: Allow all day for main walk as lots of history to discover. Refreshments: There are no food outlets once you have left Pontypool so please make sure you have a picnic and water with you. Terrain: The outward walk is flat to begin with then a steady incline with a steep rough hillside climb to the 40 ft high Folly Tower standing at 958ft above sea-level. This walk is not for inexperienced hill-walkers as there is uneven territory where boots are essential and poles very useful. The area is very undulating. Good map navigational skills required to accompany the directions and sketch-map. You will need O/S Explorer map 152. Also use map-boards in Pontypool Park. History: This walk explores a welsh iron-working community. The ‘Hanbury’ Family of Torfaen were wealthy landowners making their fortune in ‘Japan-Ware’ (lacquered tin-plate ornaments) made in Pontypool and Usk. The ‘Hanbury’ Family ensured that their employees and residents of Pontypool had a good life with good facilities in return for their labours. This walk takes you around part of the original ‘Hanbury’ Estate, pointing out some of the ‘features’.

From here there are views across the Welsh Mountains northwards to Brecon Beacons and southwards across Bristol Channel with Exmoor beyond on a clear day. Folly Tower was built in 1764 and rebuilt 1994. There is a steady climb past ‘Ty-Poeth Farm’ then down to ‘Wern Farm’. 4: Take stile over planked bridge on left of gate. The main walk follows path to ‘Churchwood’, turning right into Park Road and left into the Park . 8: In 1920 the park was transferred to the District Council as a Public Open Space. Looking forward In all these years the Royal Hotel has never looked back - we've been expanding, updating, remodelling and changing ourselves since almost the very beginning and we proudly continue to do so. In 2013, a bee hive was added to the Hotel's sixth floor roof. Affectionately named "6B", the hive is home to thousands of bees and have produced harvests of 120+ jars of honey each year for guests to enjoy. Just this year empty spaces within the Hotel have been turned into a film buffs paradise with our two new Cinema themed bedrooms.
