It’s Nothing Personal: Chain Store vs. Independent Designer It’s a weekend and you are on the hunt for a new kitchen so you hit the stores. Understandably, you head straight for the large chain store that is at the front of your consciousness.

Y

ou’ve just seen their glorious advert on the TV and couldn’t miss their full-page advertisement in the national press. The images are stunning and the copy includes words like “SALE, DISCOUNT, FREE" and "BUY NOW PAY LATER”. When you get to the showroom one sales person bombards you after another. There is a very simple reason for this. It’s nothing personal, it’s simply business, and that’s the key issue. OK, so not all chain store sales people are the same. You can find genuinely talented, focused individuals in the large stores. But there are many major differences between a chain store kitchen and one that’s been independently designed. An independently designed kitchen takes time to get right and takes your individual needs into account. If a kitchen from Your Space Living were a jigsaw puzzle it would contain a thousand pieces. You’d definitely need to start from the edges. It has to blend to every angle, quirky feature, and imperfection your kitchen space may bring. The look of the kitchen should fulfil your desires. Its functionality should match your needs. It should be made from the highest quality materials and components because independent kitchen designers

value their reputation. They can’t afford to upset their clients. They need to deliver a product and a service that delights in every way. The resulting finish will be nothing less than perfection because an independent designer will not accept any less. Independent designers build relationships with their clients. It’s the only way to discover what the client needs and how to match up the design to the client’s lifestyle. Getting to know you and your family, how you use the kitchen and what you like to do in it can influence the layout, the flow and also the materials used. As design director at Your Space Living, I explore all of the options. I never look to simply ‘rip out and replace’ an existing kitchen. So many kitchens I see are designed poorly, often by building firms whose sole purpose is to complete a house quickly and cheaply. A truly designed kitchen is thoughtful, innovative and full of wow factor. So, before you naturally head to the big kitchen chain stores, why not take a side step to see how an independently designed kitchen can change the way you live whilst creating a space you will love for many years to come. With Your Space Living it’s extremely personal and it’s never simply business. Jo Buckerfield is the design director at Your Space Living. You don’t need a big garden (or even much grass) to provide shelter for wildlife. Each garden on its own may be small, but together they form a mosaic of habitats for wildlife. Gardening doesn’t have to be difficult either, and one of the most important things to help wildlife is not to keep your garden pristinely tidy. Mark Shorter, brand manager for Volvo Cars Cardiff, commented: “Volvo’s XC90 proved to be a huge hit with our customers at the 'Open Door' event, resulting in 23 test drives, multiple orders across the weekend and, of course, some very happy drivers. “The model on display had such a strong presence in the showroom – so much so that everyone mentioned how visually striking it was when they walked in. I think our event was just the start of the XC90's success at the dealership.”

Shortly you will reach ramp to lower level which will take you around headland via Neil’s Point to Jackson’s Bay. (Not advisable in windy or inclement weather or when tides are high). Note: path unsuitable for wheelchairs beyond end of promenade. 3: For wheelchairs and those who prefer not to walk on Start/Finish: This walk circumnavigates Barry Island with an extension to Cold Knap Point. It starts and ends at Barry Island Railway Station. There is a bus service to Barry Island from Cardiff. Parking: Those who travel by car can park just over Causeway in a large car park on right (WC) and walk ¼ mile to Railway Station. O/S Map: Explorer Map 151 Distance: 4.5 miles for entire walk (shorter option 3 miles). Time: Allow all day to explore and enjoy a picnic en route. Refreshments: Barry Island has numerous eating places and food purchasing outlets near point 10 on the map or take a picnic. Terrain: This walk is mainly flat and just above sea-level. There is one section between points 4 and 6 where minor hill-climbs will be encountered. Taking the lower route via Jackson Bay is not advisable near high water and exceptional high-tide times. Barry Island is wheel-friendly. History: The area has pockets of historical interest with the docks, old houses, schools, churches etc The dock offices across the water and a number of old dock buildings have been preserved. There is little evidence of the late 1960’s ‘Graveyard’ when Barry Island was a refuge for redundant steam locos, many of which were saved by individuals, locomotive and railway preservation societies who are now running restored engines on the Heritage lines of Great Britain. There is plenty to see as you walk around Barry Island and for those who venture on the complete walk, there are good views of the tidal wetlands of Barry Harbour and of the Island from the west.

Turn right and follow road round up above Barry Docks with good views across to historic Harbour Office. At corner, turn left to rejoin Redbrick Crescent where you turn right. 5: At ‘Triangle’ turn right then down Clive Place and left along Clive Road.
