Light up the Night this summer with Tenovus Cancer Care Wales’ leading cancer charity Tenovus Cancer Care are asking people to make their evenings matter this summer, by organising a fundraising event as part of their Light up the Night campaign. Whether it’s a moonlit BBQ, twilight tea, neon disco or a simple summer quiz, there’s loads of ways to get involved and all the money raised will go towards their lifesaving work. The charity supported Sybil from Cardiff when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and again two years later when her husband Rob, was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. “The day Rob was diagnosed was a horrendous day. To sit in a room with your husband, who you thought you’d spend the rest of your life with, and hear he only had two months to live was the worst thing in the world. “During that time, Tenovus Cancer Care’s support helped me more than anyone will ever know. I didn’t feel alone because there was someone there for me all the time. I’ll never forget how they helped me. They were there for me at my darkest moments.”

Home & Garden SilentNight Mirapocket, available from www.silentnight.co.uk
So when’s the right time for a new bed? Getting a good night’s sleep is so good for your wellbeing, it leaves you feeling fit, thinking sharply and happy! The foundation of good sleep is a comfortable bed and the right mattress. Research by the National Bed Foundation (NBF) shows that sleeping on an uncomfortable bed could rob you of up to an hour’s sleep – yet the deterioration may be so gradual and invisible that many people fail to make the connection between an uncomfortable bed and poor sleep. Beds don’t last forever. Even if it looks okay, it may not be giving you the support or comfort you need for a good night’s sleep. A mattress’s life span is affected by several factors such as the quality, care and amount you use it (e.g. reading, watching TV & sleeping each night versus occasional use of a spare bed). Changes in lifestyle (marriage, new home) and in our bodies (losing or gaining weight, ageing, etc) can also necessitate a change of bed. The NBF suggest you should consider a new mattress/bed if: You have had your mattress more than seven years; You wake up with stiffness and/or aches and pains; You don’t sleep as well as you did a year ago?; You’ve had a better night’s sleep in a bed other than yours; Your mattress show signs of visible wear and tear (it sags, is lumpy etc). There are literally thousands of beds from which to choose and there’s no such thing as the perfect type of bed for a particular condition or situation (e.g. one ideal bed for a back pain sufferer). Although a good retailer will arm you with lots of information to make the process simpler but only you can make the final, important decision, so take your time and make it wisely. Before you go shopping for a new bed, think about what you want from your bed: What sort of style do you prefer?; What do you like or dislike about your current bed?; Do you prefer a firmer or softer feel? n 16 | Cardiff Now | Issue 41 | June - August 2018
Always shop for the best value not the lowest price. Of course, there are some perfectly acceptable, lower priced beds available but the better the construction, the better the support and comfort and the longer the bed will last. With a larger bed you are less likely to disturb your partner. You should be able to lie side by side, with your arms behind your head and your elbows out, without touching. Your bed should also be 4-6in (10-15cm) longer than the tallest partner so anyone over 6ft (1.8m) tall should consider a bed longer than standard. Bed sizes are not standardised and even if they have the same name (eg King size) they may not be the same size especially if the mattress and base are not from the same manufacturer. European common sizes are different and many imported bedsteads come in European sizes. So it is best to buy the base and mattress together. At the very least, make sure you try mattresses on a similar type of base. The two are designed to work together and a change of base will affect the feel and performance of the mattress. Jonathan Warren, director at bed and sleep specialist, Time 4 Sleep, said: “Once you’ve decided on the size, your next step is to choose the right frame. This is unique for each buyer, and depends on your priorities. For smaller rooms, ottoman beds are fantastic for providing extra storage space underneath the bed. If style and design are your major motivations, consider a sleigh bed to introduce sophistication and luxury to your bedroom. For a touch of glamour, why not treat yourself to a TV bed, where an LED screen is discreetly hidden in the footboard, ready for those cosy nights in.” If you are worried about getting the bed upstairs, remember most divans have split bases; while many bedsteads are Continued over the page

How to Have Fantastic
Summer Hanging Baskets Here is some great advice for planting your summer hanging baskets, courtesy of Hayes Garden World Summer hanging baskets are ideal for a splash of colour, even if space is limited. Size can range from a slim flower pouch to a 45cm (18”) basket. There are infinite colour combinations and a huge range of plants to choose from; it can range in price from £10 to £60. The cheapest option can be achieved by buying a plastic hanging pot for a couple of pounds and a ready themed bedding pack, usually containing 10 – 12 plants; these usually retail for approximately £6 - £10. If money is not a consideration there are a lot of beautiful wrought iron hanging baskets which will last for many years. Just make sure that the supporting bracket is secure enough to support the weight of a heavy basket plus wet compost and plants. It needs a sunny sheltered site. If you don’t fancy flowers why not try strawberries or tomatoes instead? When do I plant my basket? Small plug plants are available at Hayes Garden World from February, so the basket can be planted up from then if you have somewhere light and cool to keep it. Make sure you don’t over-water as the small plants will rot easily. The larger plants are available from mid-April
n 20 | Cardiff Now | Issue 41 | June - August 2018
but also need to be kept inside, somewhere light and cool. Put the baskets outside when all danger of frosts have passed, usually the beginning of June. If you live in a mild area or can’t wait that long make sure you keep an eye on the weather forecast and are prepared to bring the basket in, or insulate it if frost is forecast. What basket do I choose? There is a vast range of baskets from which to choose; from the simple plastic hanging pot to elaborate wrought iron baskets. There is also a plastic basket with sections that pop out making it easier to plant around the sides and avoiding damaging the plant roots. If using a wrought iron or wire basket don’t forget the liner. If using a coir liner line it with plastic, making sure to slash the bottom to avoid the water collecting, this extends the life of the liner. You can be inventive and recycle an old colander, a sturdy wooden crate or even an old pair of boots (making sure there are plenty of holes in the bottom. Chain can be bought from any hardware store. Home & Garden What compost do I use? Any good quality multi-purpose will suffice. Adding a water retention gel will cut down on watering. As bedding plants need a lot of feeding I always add a slow release feed. This should be enough to feed the plants through the main season, a supplementary liquid high potassium feed, such as Tomorite, may be necessary to prolong the show into early autumn. There are composts available which already have water retention gel and slow release feed incorporated. Which plants do I choose? There is an infinite variety of summer bedding so first decide on a colour theme. You roughly need a plant for every inch of hanging basket plus a larger upright one for the centre of the basket. For example, if planting a 14 basket choose 14 trailing plants plus a large upright one for the middle. Trailing plants are usually sold in small single pots costing approximately £1.50 - £2.00 each. To keep costs down pad the basket out with trailing lobelia, which usually comes in packs, costing just a few pence per plant. How do I plant the basket? Place the basket on a pot or bucket to keep it stable. Fill the basket half full with the compost, water retaining crystals and slow release feed mixture. Make slits around the sides of the basket to push the plants through. A
n 22 | Cardiff Now | Issue 41 | June - August 2018
good idea is to wrap a cone of cardboard around the plant roots; this makes it easier to push through and protects the roots. Once the side plants are in place, put in some more compost mixture and place the top plants, filling in any gaps around the plants. Once planted water well and leave to drain. Leave the basket to settle in for about a week before putting in position. How often do I need to feed and water the basket? On a hot day you may need to water twice a day, morning and late afternoon, try and avoid watering in the midday sun. If reaching the basket is a problem there are products on the market to hang the basket from which lowers it for ease of watering and deadheading. If you have several baskets it may be worth considering investing in a watering system. Incorporating water retention gel into the compost will help prevent the basket drying out. Feed weekly with a high potassium feed, such as Tomorite, if there is no slow release feed in the compost. If there is slow release feed in the compost you will probably only need to feed with a high potassium feed in late summer when the flowers are starting to fade. What else do I need to do? Make sure you keep deadheading the plants as this prolongs the flowering period. n By Angela Slater, Gardening Expert Hayes Garden World

A Red Squirrel
Legacy
The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales’ Red Squirrel Project has been running since 2014 and has been part-funded by people like you choosing to leave a gift in their Will to charity. Without the help of gifts in Wills, our work towards red squirrel conservation in mid Wales could not have been delivered. The Project works with its two dedicated project officers and volunteers to help conserve and improve conditions for red squirrels. The Mid Wales Red Squirrel Focal Site (MWRSFS) is currently one of only three areas of Wales with a significant population of red squirrels. It is thought that between 100 and 500 red squirrels still survive in mid Wales in over 15,000 ha of forestry plantations. So we’re extremely grateful to have received gifts in Will that have enabled us to manage the site. In 2017 a Habitat Management Plan for Red Squirrels in Mid Wales was launched, a collaborative venture with Forest Managers. This is the first Management Plan for the MWRSFS for the benefit of red squirrels and is all part of working towards a healthier and enhanced red squirrel population. n 24 | Cardiff Now | Issue 41 | June - August 2018
Volunteers get involved with the Project by undertaking surveys for red squirrels, monitoring feeding stations, making feeders and raising awareness. They also engage with schools and community groups as well as a variety of other tasks that all contribute to the Project objectives. Since the Project started, volunteers have given over 9,000 hours of their time to help conserve red squirrels. Thanks to gifts in Wills, our work in Mid Wales to help the struggling Red Squirrels can progress. If you would like more information about leaving a gift in your will to us and how it could help local wildlife, please visit www.welshwildlife.org/legacies or call 01656 724100 for an informal chat. n

Unless you are a winter palette, totally black sunglasses are unlikely to suit you.
1. Horizontal stripes are on trend. Experiment with stripe widths to find the most flattering look. Choose interesting colour combinations that suit your colour palette. 2. Denim shirts are popular this summer, however make sure it is the right colour denim as different shades suit different skin tones. If you are working a smart casual look, a fitted buttondown denim shirt works well. Denim shirts also go well with on trend chino shorts that are tapered slightly if this suits your style personality. 3. Pastels are good colours to wear in the summer, but not everyone can wear them. Make sure you know if you are a warm or cool toned and if more yellow or blue based colours suit you to get pastels right. 4. Belts, sunglasses, hats and bags are the details that will determine whether you are truly a style pro. Invest in these accessories carefully, as quality will always make you stand out from the crowd. 5. Take time to search for the perfect sunglasses that suit your face shape and find the colour which compliments your face the best. Unless you are a winter palette, totally black sunglasses are unlikely to suit you. Start with neutral coloured sunglasses from your colour palette and work your way around different colours, sizes, shapes and even textures. 6. Colour is in this summer! Don’t be afraid to wear the bold or bright colours that work with your skin tone. Equally use patterns to stand out from the crowd on Father’s Day. 7. Hawaiian Tropical print shirts are trending right now and a bold design in your best colours will always make an exciting style statement in your summer wardrobe. 8. Do not feel obligated to follow the trend of super skinny trousers and jackets unless it really suits your style personality! Well-fitting clothes is key. 9. In the shops many shorts this year are finishing just below the knee, but different lengths and materials suit different people. Shorts are a great way to add colour or pattern. Pair with a leather belt for style finesse. 10. Consider loafers and sandals this summer but it is all about the colour. Neutrals to work with most of your wardrobe or a colour to make a statement. The choice is yours. n House of Colour www.houseofcolour.co.uk n 30 | Cardiff Now | Issue 41 | June - August 2018

WEDDINGS
Choosing the Right
Wedding Band
The sheer volume of wedding bands on the High Street is overwhelming so it’s worth narrowing your search by deciding on the basics before you leave the house. Traditionally the material will be dictated by the engagement ring, yellow gold is a timeless choice in 14 or 18 carat both are more robust than 22 carat gold and therefore more suitable for everyday wear. While white gold and platinum, the strongest, most durable metal, have become the most popular contemporary styles. Rose gold has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, as has mixing and matching metals.
Gold Gold is one of the most common and desired metals used in rings of all varieties. The metal’s popularity for men’s or women’s engagement and wedding rings is unsurpassed. The larger the carat, the higher the percentage of pure gold in the ring and the more expensive it will be. The hardness and durability of gold varies depending on carat, so it is important to take these factors into account when selecting a gold ring.
“If you fall in love with a ring that doesn’t perfectly complements the engagement ring, don’t worry”, says ring designer Anja Potze of Anja Potze, Worcester. “They are two separate rings for two separate reasons and sometimes it is good to be able to see the distinction.” It’s also important to consider how the wedding band sits with your engagement ring. “I would always recommend choosing a wedding ring that is a similar width to the band of the engagement ring, not to dominate,” says Anja. If the engagement ring has a very large central stone then this may cause a gap between it and the band, in which case it’s worth considering a shaped band or one which interlocks with the stone. So the shopping starts, do you want to leave room for an eternity ring? Do you fancy a plain band or one that is diamond set. You can also choose a classic style or a contemporary one? To help with the search. n
Platinum Platinum is a white metal and the most expensive and prestigious option for a ring. It is long wearing and already exceptionally white, so it does not need to be rhodium plated like white gold. Platinum is also used in rings at almost 100% purity.
Tungsten Carbide Tungsten carbide is a compound of tungsten and carbon that is hard, heavy and durable. A tungsten carbide ring will stand up to any degree of wear and tear and remain looking like new. One major benefit of tungsten carbide rings is that their durability makes them much more scratch resistant than rings made of other metals. The drawback of tungsten carbide’s durability is that it cannot be cut and resoldered which prevents rings made of the metal from being resized. This makes having your finger sized accurately extremely important when buying a tungsten carbide ring.

Golden Years Many of us enjoy the freedom and independence that driving gives us, and we don’t want to give it up. There are negative stories in the media about older drivers that can lead to some people losing their confidence on the road and giving up driving before they need to. But, in fact, statistics show that older drivers are relatively safe.

cases you may have to stop. When you reach 70, you’ll need to renew your driving licence and then do it again every three years afterwards. The DVLA will send you a D46P application form 90 days before your 70th birthday. There’s no charge to renew. If you already have a photocard licence, the form will tell you if you need to send a new application. If you have a paper licence, you will need to send an up-to-date passport-type photo with your application. Make

correspondence from the DVLA carefully. They may, for example, send you a letter which states that you can continue to drive as before. Or they may send you a temporary driving licence only for use during a Mobility Centre driving assessment. Reporting Medical Conditions If you have developed a medical
condition or disability that could affect your ability to drive safely, you must tell the DVLA even if you are not yet due to renew your licence. This also applies if your condition has worsened since your licence was issued. It’s a legal obligation for you to declare certain conditions. If you have an accident where your health condition may have been a factor and you haven’t declared it, you could be prosecuted and your insurance might not cover you. Some of the medical conditions that you must declare include dementia, diabetes – if it is insulintreated, Parkinson’s, epilepsy, any chronic neurological condition such as multiple sclerosis, and any condition that affects both eyes or the total loss of sight in one eye. After you have told the DVLA about a medical condition it may make a decision based on the information you provide, contact your GP or consultant,

Cardiff Care Home
Hosts Its Own Royal Wedding
Excited residents at a Cardiff care home had front-row seats at their own mock wedding to celebrate the Royal marriage. Tŷ Llandaff, a private nursing, residential and respite care home in Conway Road, Pontcanna, brought the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last Saturday to life for their residents by staging a fictious ceremony in one of their luxury lounges. The fake wedding brought staff and residents together as they acted out the different roles. The bride, senior carer Jo Western, was walked down the aisle by two gentlemen residents, Norman Bennett, 90, and Daniel Rosewell, 102. The groom was played by carer Jason Howells. In an amusing twist, the entertaining maintenance support manager, Ralph Evans, unleashed his feminine side to play the chief bridesmaid. Guest singer Jackie Webbe, wearing a stunning Union flag dress, added a sense of occasion to the day with a beautiful selection of songs. Although the wedding did not have quite the media attention of Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding, TV cameras filmed the event and it was later shown on ITV Wales.

Tŷ Llandaff care home manager Janice Evans said: “There was so much excitement in the home about the Royal wedding, so we thought it would be lovely for the residents to have a little prewedding event. “Everyone was delighted to have the chance to be so closely involved, remember their own weddings, anticipate the royal wedding, and also have a bit of a giggle at the same time. “We were delighted to welcome our guest singer Jackie Webb whose songs just added the perfect touch. There was a real buzz around the home about the event and the residents had a great time.” n For more information about the Tŷ Llandaff contact 02920 600 100, email info@tyllandaffcare.com or visit www.tyllandaffcare.com

LIVING HISTORY
The Royal Welsh
Agricultural Society
The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society was established originally as the Welsh National Agricultural Society in 1904. The first general meeting of founders and supporters, attended by 20 prominent figures from Wales, took place in Committee Room Twelve of the House of Commons in London. They passed a number of rules on the society’s constitution and decreed that its aims should be to improve the breeding of stock and encourage agriculture throughout Wales. It is a tribute to those early pioneers, and others who followed, that these aims have been achieved. Welsh livestock lead the world and agriculture in Wales has, through skill and endeavour, survived many of the challenges faced by the farming industry in the intervening years, and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society has been at the centre of agricultural progress in Wales during all of that time. Today, the society is a national institution loved throughout Wales and beyond not only by farmers and the rural community but by people from all walks of life, many of whom have come to regard the Royal Welsh Show as the highlight of their year. It has not always been so. The society’s beginnings were punctuated by problems and disagreements and sometimes even downright hostility from a range of determined opponents and factions with differing and strongly held views on many issues. However, these initial skirmishes were eventually overcome and the society survived and developed during its embryonic years at Aberystwyth, where the first show was held in August 1904 under the presidency of the Earl of Powys, and then through its migratory existence in the first half of the last century when the show moved to 37 different locations alternating between North and South Wales. Often dogged by financial difficulties, created mainly by the expense of moving from one show site to another, it was not until the Royal Welsh settled on its present site at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, in 1963, that financially and otherwise matters began to take a more permanent turn for the better. Even then its position remained precarious and some challenging n 46 | Cardiff Now | Issue 41 | June - August 2018
decisions had to be taken during the early years at Llanelwedd to keep the society afloat. The first show at Aberystwyth attracted 442 livestock entries. Four years later, in 1908, 23 special trains comprising 224 cattle trucks and horse-boxes arrived at Aberystwyth together with 100 passenger coaches ferrying visitors from far and wide to the show. The Royal Welsh was on its way. Nowadays, livestock entries number around 8000 and 20,000 cars a day plus hundreds of stock lorries and trailers converge on the showground in Mid Wales for the annual four-day event which has grown into the most popular agricultural show in Britain. The success of the Royal Welsh Show has spawned two other great events – the Winter Fair which was founded in 1990, and the spring Smallholder and Garden Festival which made its debut on the showground in 2003, which is now called the Spring Festival. Both have grown rapidly in stature and importance and are among the most popular attractions in Wales. Today, the role of the modern Royal Welsh Show is a rounded one. As well as its principal function of showcasing the cream of Welsh livestock and the high quality food and drink produced in Wales, it encompasses the wider spectrum of farming and rural life and successfully bridges the gap between town and country. It provides something to interest everyone through its kaleidoscopic range of activities including forestry, horticulture, crafts, countryside sports, and a 12 hour programme of exciting entertainment that continues throughout each of the four days of the event. This year’s Royal Welsh Show will be held at the showground in Llanelwedd on 23 – 26th July 2018. Find out more by visiting www.rwas.wales. n
