on the other hand is the room that most people looking to economise can save money in. Of course, you may not choose to economise, as many people like to have the same carpet throughout the upstairs of their home. Not all bedrooms have carpets - it depends on your house and your circumstances. For example, you may feel that you want a particular floor to match the character of your house, or you or your family might have allergies or be badly asthmatic. If either of these scenarios applies then you could choose a wood, laminate, vinyl or LVT floor, all of which are very good for a bedroom. KEEPING ACTIVE Start/Finish: This walk starts and ends at Newton near Porthcawl. Public Transport: Nearest Railway Stations at Bridgend with a regular X2 bus service linking Bridgend to Porthcawl (Newton is 1 mile). Visit ‘Traveline Cymru’ and use current timetables to check your journey. Parking: There is a pay car park between the Church and the beach . O/S Map: Explorer Map 151 Distances: 7 miles or 3 to 5 miles. Time: Allow all day for main walk or half day for shorter route. The shorter walk is a ‘there and back’ walk along the wales Coast path from Newton and can be as long or short as you wish to make it. Refreshments: There are pubs in Newton that serve meals and lunchtime snacks but it is advisable to take a picnic. Terrain: If there are strong winds, rough seas or very high tides, do not attempt this walk. The main route is mainly flat and alongside the beach on low cliffs. The path can be rather uneven in a few places which means that walking boots/shoes are recommended. There is one steep climb on main walk, just take it slowly. History: Nearby Porthcawl used to be a thriving fishing port and now the harbour is a marina with berths for numerous large yachts. Newton is to the east of Porthcawl and is known for its sand dunes/burrows. There was once a rifle range here so don’t touch any suspicious objects or dig in the dunes. Merthyr Mawr is a National Nature Reserve featuring the second highest sand dune in Europe at 200 feet. It is part of a dune system that stretches from The Gower Peninsular to Ogmore and is home to many salt-loving species.
3: Where dunes dwindle, there is a path cutting corner off or you might prefer to go round end of dunes if you have walked along beach. Walk around edge of two ‘boggy’ areas. This river is tidal so do not attempt short cuts as mud can be dangerous. If you follow path at foot of river cliff you should be fine. You may get glimpses of Ogmore Castle ahead.
Note: There are no public WCs in Newton! If there are strong winds, rough seas or very high tides, do not attempt this walk. The short walk option is a ‘there and back’ walk between points 1 and 3.
4: After ½ mile the Wales Coast Path cuts left away from River Ogmore. At this point you will be walking up left side of a tributary stream (Cwm Cwintin) until you reach a bridge. Please use bridge

6: Just before you reach farm, turn left almost back on yourself and continue up slope round to right, above woodland, to an area of heathland. 7: Take footpath on left through a wooden kiss-gate and round to right. Continue along limestone ridge though two scrubby areas forking left at junction. Walk through native woodland and weave your way down this delightful woodland path. Shortly the path veers across valley and you can see across lines of old dunes towards the sea. 8: When you reach a crossroads in paths out in open, turn right and climb sharply up hill through sandy gap to higher path. Turn left and walk behind houses for ½ mile to edge of Newton. 9: Continue along sign-posted footpath through houses to a road near some allotments. 10: Turn right and walk round this road to Church where walk ends. A successful Cardiff businessman, James Howell opened his first shop in 1865. In 1890 he made arrangements to build a property on land leased from Lord Tredegar. The plans were for a large family home, which became known as ‘The Grove’, to house his 11 children. The house was bought by the Cardiff Corporation in 1913 and was used as the home of the

The one unusual aspect of the Grade II listed house is that it has two front doors as James Howell wanted to ensure that the house could be divided in two in the future if needed. In the cellar, a wall was constructed which could have been extended upwards to divide the house in two. The interior has retained many of its original features. The Mansion House’s grand, lavishly appointed rooms are a revelation, from the generously – proportioned Drawing Room complete with grand piano, to the Dining Room with chandeliers, an impressive collection of civic silver and a magnificent table setting.
