Bromsgrove – A Happy School
Bromsgrove School’s results are impressive, but Bromsgrove is much more than a place to get good grades, it prides itself on being a happy school where children of all ages can thrive both academically and outside of the classroom. The 2016 ISI inspection rated Bromsgrove as excellent in every category and the most recent Goods Schools Guide, following inspection in February 2017, states that: ‘the school looks for what every individual is good at and helps them find their niche and passion’.
Bromsgrove has a vibrant arts scene with numerous opportunities for pupils to perform both large and small projects. A new performing arts centre with a concert hall and multiple rehearsal areas is currently under construction, to be completed by September 2017. There is considerable strength, too, in sports and a large number of representatives at county, regional and national level. The School’s U18 rugby team were winners of the NatWest School’s trophy in 2015 and 2016 and semi-finalists in 2017. Girls are National champions in netball at U18. There is an extensive activity programme with optional Saturday activities when

pupils may select from a diverse range of recreational and academic activities. Catering for 1600 pupils aged 3 -18 on three sites, the School is a small global community – a place to live, work and make friends for life.
The new academic year is going to be undoubtedly one of the most exciting times for Music and Drama in Bromsgrove School’s 500-year history. Tim Norton, Bromsgrove’s first Director of Performing Arts, says; “I am particularly proud of the amazing opportunities that await our students and our community in the future. In November, we will see the opening of a multi-million pound
complex of performance spaces including a magnificently refurbished and expanded Concert Hall alongside a brand new Music School; a new Drama Studio and a state-of-the-art Theatre. There will be a purpose built recording studio and the capacity to convert our new Drama Studio into a television studio when required. All our new spaces will be fully equipped to professional specifications to give our students access to the highest standards of production so that we can support, develop and showcase their performing talents as effectively as is possible. The Grand Opening of the new buildings in November is the result of many years of detailed and careful planning, but it sits upon many centuries of skilled teachers dedicated to nurturing the talents of our young actors and musicians both within and beyond the curriculum.” Bromsgrove offers Music Scholarships at ages 11+ & 13+ and Drama scholarships at age 13+. We would be delighted to welcome any prospective scholars in Music and Drama to have a look around our new facilities. Please do get in touch with either Tim Norton, Director of Performing Arts, or the Admissions team to find out more information. n

Malvern St James Girls’ School a strong support network in their peers and teachers. MSJ achieved the highest rating of ‘excellent’ in its inspection report published by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) earlier this year. The inspectors observed that ‘even the youngest pupils are willing to offer a partially correct answer in class rather than remain silent. They are not afraid to make mistakes... teachers establish pupils’ perseverance and resilience through their gentle but firm encouragement’. Describe MSJ Prep in 3 words Fun, nurturing, courageous. What makes MSJ Prep unique? The people. We are one huge family – girls and staff alike. We work together in a supportive and encouraging way to bring the absolute best out of each other, both academically and personally. What is the style of learning at MSJ? From a young age, MSJ girls are encouraged to be independent learners. A ‘can do’ attitude is modelled by staff and each pupil is given the opportunity to explore areas of interest in detail, through and beyond the curriculum. Even our youngest girls have some input into what and how they will learn and the girls are challenged to embrace new experiences through their lessons and extracurricular activities, knowing that they have

How are girls supported at MSJ? We take our pastoral responsibilities very seriously and there is a range of support strategies integrated into the daily timetables and systems of the Prep Department. As well as friendly, approachable teachers, TAs and housemistresses, the girls have a Buddy system to support playground interactions, Anti-bullying Ambassadors in each class and a Year 6 Communities Captain. Girls also have time with their form tutors on a daily basis to ensure time for feedback and mentoring. Tell us more about Woodland School at MSJ In addition to fortnightly Woodland School sessions for Pre-Prep, MSJ’s Woodland School is regularly used for Maths, English and Science lessons across all year groups. Our Woodland School sessions provide an opportunity for the
girls to engage in physical and practical activities, whilst developing skills like teamwork and perseverance; tasks include den building, tree climbing, camp fire cookery, woodland art & craft and role-play as well as more mainstream activities like bug hunting and tree identification. What opportunities are there for Boarding and what is Boarding life like for Prep girls? Boarding is available to every girl from Year 3 onwards. Girls can board full time, or at the drop of a hat. The Boarding House is a home from home and the Housemistress is wonderful. Girls love boarding and are keen to do so whenever they can. The weekend activities for our girls are superb and like the school day, are full of variety. What extra-curricular activities are offered? Both lunchtime and after school (age appropriate) activities are offered every day. Clubs and activities include riding, ballet, Gym Club, Football Club, Young Investigators Club, Recorders, Art Club, Film Club, Dance Club, Coding Club, music, drama, fencing and touch typing. ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’ is popular, with activities such as yoga, Colouring Club, board games and Craft Club, open to all age groups which results in a wonderful mixed age and mutually supportive feel. We also offer a free after school club until 6.10pm to help working parents. n
Dyson Perrins CofE
Academy, Malvern
Dyson Perrins is a thriving Church of England secondary school and sixth form in Malvern, Worcestershire. We pride ourselves on the very highest quality of teaching and on the excellent care we provide for our children. There is a sense of vibrancy and dynamism around the academy as our students enjoy their learning and the positive relationships they have with their peers and teachers. Every effort is made to enable progress amongst all of our learners and across the curriculum. This has resulted in standards of overall achievement rising significantly year on year. We are proud of our achievements and levels of attainment and progress which consistently put us well above national and local averages. The students who attend Dyson Perrins enjoy coming to school and feel safe and supported. They know they will be challenged in lessons as a ‘Growth Mindset’ philosophy underpins much of our pedagogical development work. There is a significant emphasis on academic achievement and our curriculum reflects this, yet we are very aware of ensuring that our students
have access to a broad and balanced curriculum and the support which will enable them to succeed. What we have achieved at Dyson Perrins in recent years has been done through the strong partnership we have with our parents. They know and understand how we work but more importantly, that we have the best interests of their children at heart. More and more parents are choosing Dyson Perrins because of this and we are delighted to be oversubscribed and welcoming so many Year 7 students through our doors this Autumn. At KS3, we have built in regular assessment throughout the academic year in order that we can assess the progress that is being made and intervene where necessary. Our parents receive regular and detailed progress updates as we look to prepare our students in Years 7-9 with the knowledge and skills for the examinations that they will face higher up the school. Expectations are rightly very high at Dyson Perrins. Ofsted judged us to be a ‘Good’ school in 2015 but we have a
desire and commitment to provide our students with an outstanding education. There is an extensive programme of enrichment available to all students ranging from our annual school production to sports clubs and musical opportunities. We are proud of our Christian distinctiveness as a Church of England Academy and believe that we truly develop and nourish our students’ moral and spiritual growth. Our School Chaplain leads this work in conjunction with our extensive pastoral team and the exceptional teaching of RE. Choosing a secondary school for your child is a very important decision and we welcome you to take a closer look at what we can offer at Dyson Perrins. Our Open Evening will take place at 6.00pm on Thursday 12 October. Alternatively, we will be holding two Open Mornings on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 October from 9.00am to 10.30am when you will be able to see our school and students in action. Hanley Castle High School Hanley Castle High School is one of the most successful schools in Great Britain. Founded in 1326, the school has a long history of academic excellence. 2017 has been another successful year with the school, its staff and students winning a number of regional and national awards. GCSE results show that Hanley Castle students are exceptionally high achievers. Around 30% of all GCSE grades are awarded at either A or A* grade. The percentage of students achieving the prestigious English Baccalaureate is around 40% - almost twice the national average. A-level results are extremely strong, particularly in academic subjects such as mathematics, physics and chemistry. Of course exam results are important, but there are other areas of a school’s performance which matter just as much. The success of the school means that it is able to continue to
offer a broad range of subjects – both to younger pupils and to the growing number of sixth form students from across Worcestershire who choose Hanley Castle for their post-16 studies. As well as an academic core including English, mathematics, history and the sciences, the school offers a rich wider curriculum which challenges and supports the talents of individual students in music, drama and sport. The school’s well-rounded, highachieving students are much sought after by top universities, and the school sends large numbers of students to Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group universities. However, the success of Hanley Castle students in gaining places is matched by their high performance once their studies have commenced. A large number of our students graduate with First Class Honours degrees from universities including Oxford, Durham and Nottingham.
Hanley Castle High School is one of the oldest schools in England, with a unique blend of traditional values and cutting-edge teaching and facilities. In September 2016 we opened our magnificent new Sixth Form Centre which complements brand new Science laboratories and an upgraded IT infrastructure. Hanley Castle was visited by Ofsted in June 2017. The inspection letter highlighted a number of key strengths including: • the excellent progress made by students resulting in academic success in a wide variety of subject areas; • the excellent behaviour and attitude of our students; • the wealth of enrichment activities offered by the school; • the quality of our sixth form and the success of our students in progressing to top universities. n

John Kyrle
High School
and Sixth Form Centre John Kyrle High School and Sixth Form Centre is a fully comprehensive 11-18 school, graded as Outstanding by Ofsted for Leadership & Management, Student Behaviour & Attendance and the Sixth Form. Ofsted noted of the school in March 2017, ‘Because of excellent attitudes to learning and strong academic results, pupils are well prepared for life after school... Pupils are well behaved, polite and friendly... Parents value the education that the school provides... ’
John Kyrle students enjoy learning under the guidance of specialist, enthusiastic staff in a £1.2 million Centre of Excellence for Mathematics; Language and Data-Logging Laboratories; Creative Arts and Music Technology Centres; a bespoke Drama Studio and an extended Sixth Form Centre. Students participate in a wide variety of sports utilising superb facilities including playing fields, tennis courts, a large all-weather Astroturf playing surface and a fully-equipped multi-gym. Academic achievement is first-rate. At GCSE, the number of students gaining A*-C in both English and Mathematics, as well as the English Baccalaureate, is well above the national and local averages. Excellent A-Level results have established further the school’s pre-eminent role as the provider of the highest quality Sixth Form education in the region and its position in the top 4% of all providers nationally. In the summer of 2016, JKHS celebrated one of the most successful academic years in its history at both GCSE and A-Level. The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities. These include concerts, field trips, sports tours to South Africa or Canada, and other foreign trips which have included Spain, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Iceland, New York and the Sixth Form’s annual visit to John Kyrle’s link school, Kisiki College, in Uganda. In March 2017, Ofsted wrote to Nigel Griffiths, Headteacher, and said, ‘You are successful in your aim to develop young people who are Happy, Healthy and Successful’. n

Nunnery Wood High School When you are looking for the best school for your child, their happiness and ability to thrive will be foremost in your mind. With absolute conviction, as Headteacher, I can recommend Nunnery Wood High School as a place of opportunity, growth and enjoyment. Last year, Ofsted confirmed this too, identifying, “an ethos in which pupils are encouraged to strive for their best, succeed academically, develop their talents and become responsible citizens. The personal development of pupils is excellent.” In our most recent survey, 99% of our parents would recommend Nunnery to others. Out of a set of outstanding examination results this Summer, including 25% of all GCSE grades awarded being either A or A*, our “value added” progress score puts us amongst the top few schools in the country. In other words, whatever your child’s starting point, they will achieve more with us! Transition to secondary school is an important event for both the student and their family. We invest time and care in this process to ensure that it is as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. Year 6 students will meet their future Head of Year 7 several times, both in their primary school and at Nunnery. In addition to this, we offer two full induction days in the Summer term so that students can take the September start in their stride. Visitors to Nunnery High School are invariably impressed by our outstanding site and facilities. The fact that several Worcestershire schools, including some from the independent sector, use out superb running stadium and all weather pitches speaks volumes. In addition to huge playing fields and athletics facilities, student use a sports centre and gymnasium. Likewise, in the Arts, students are taught in a state-of-the-art theatre, dance studio and suite of music rooms – all part of a recent, £3 million development. Over the next 18 months, a further £2.2 million investment will see Science and Visual Art areas becoming stunning learning environments with cutting edge research and exhibition spaces. In short, a superb site that is about to grow into something even more special.
Outstanding teaching underpins everything, of course, and at Nunnery, students are expected to show the “old fashioned” expectations of high levels of politeness and hard-work at all times. There is also a sense of fun and open-mindedness about new ways to learn together. We expect and achieve high levels of smartness and conduct, enabling every student to learn in calm and orderly environment. As a consequence, results are superb with a “value-added” score of 1029 (the progress student make with us from their starting point compared to other schools in the country) putting Nunnery alongside the top few schools in the country. English and Maths results are considerably above national averages and our Progress 8 score of 0.33 – the government’s main performance indicator – means that we are amongst the highest achieving schools in the country. This cannot come simply from exam drilling of course, and is proof of the precision and dedication with which students are taught and nurtured from their first day in Year 7, whatever their needs or capabilities. Finally, schools are so much more than just results. I believe that the range of activities, clubs, sports and trips that the school offers is second to none. Added to this, through our student parliament, student leadership team and enrichment programme, students have wide opportunities to get engaged in school life and to understand themselves better. Please look at our website and perhaps read copies of our school publication “Nunnery News”, available online, to get more of a “feel” for our superb school. Stephen Powell, Headteacher, Nunnery Wood High School n

Meet Our Trainee
Teachers – Faye
Faye Higgings, trainee MFL teacher at South Bromsgrove High, tell us what it’s really like to be a School Direct trainee. What made you decide to train to be a teacher? I was lucky enough to have a really enthusiastic languages teacher when I was at secondary school. I wanted to pass on the love of languages that she gave me. Why did you choose South Bromsgrove for your placement? I looked on the website and checked out the Ofsted report and the school looked fabulous. Everyone that I met on that day was friendly and informative, I couldn’t ask for a better place to do my training.
What does an average day involve? I start the day with the form group I share, checking that they have arrived at school safely and giving out notices. The rest of the day flies by, as I am either teaching a lesson, planning a lesson, or helping pupils with any problems they may have. What part of the training has had most impact on you? This will sound cheesy, but I’ll say it anyway, it has to be the pupils. That’s what teaching is all about. The planning and evaluating can be a pain, but when I am in the classroom, that’s when I know I have made the right decision to go into teaching. What would you tell someone who is thinking about training to be a teacher? Do it! If you want to keep on top of everything, you may have to cut down on your social life a bit, but this will keep you sane! It’s important to have at least one day off a week where you have a complete rest, but it’s all worth it! n

truly exceptional! Over the past few years Weobley High School has received recognition both locally and nationally.
By focussing on the wellbeing and happiness of its pupils along with high-quality and engaging teaching, the school has continued to improve rapidly and is now one of the most popular and successful schools in the region. Successive inspections have commented on the outstanding behaviour of the children and the unique and exceptional climate for learning which has resulted inevitably in some very impressive academic outcomes. Nevertheless the school’s success is built on much more than just GCSE results. Pupils are encouraged to embrace a ‘can do’ culture and to take advantage of the plethora of opportunities available to them. Club, a Trampolining Club, an Equestrian Team and a Glee Club; as well as opportunities to take part and compete in a truly impressive range of sports teams for all age groups.
Creativity is also nurtured through extra-curricular drama, music and dance activities as well as associated GCSE courses in these areas. This leads to a steady flow of concerts and performances as well as the hugely successful biennial Weobley musical which can involve up to 200 pupils! All this takes place in this small, friendly school of just 500 pupils in the heart of the beautiful Herefordshire countryside. It is no surprise that Weobley now attracts pupils from over 20 primary schools across the county and new intakes are becoming increasingly oversubscribed.
