VAMOS THEATRE GROUP

Young people that are serious about theatre can now join one of the brightest and boldest youth theatres around. Vamos Youth Theatre (VYT) is for young people (1321yrs) who love theatre and want to learn more for themselves or for a future career in the industry.

VYT is a challenging, exciting and creative place to learn new theatre skills, and members need to be committed and focussed. Guided by theatre professionals, the group meets weekly in term time, developing skills like voice work, improvisation, characterisation, physical theatre and the funny and fearless full mask for which Vamos Theatre is internationally renowned. There are plenty of opportunities to take part in performances and share new skills with family and friends.

We meet on Wednesdays between 5:30pm and 7:00pm in central Worcester. Cost is £60 per person and place are limited, so if you’d like to find out more, visit our website at www.vamostheatre.co.uk/Youth-Theatre or email vyt@vamostheatre.co.uk n

VYT is a place to discover and develop performance skills in a safe and supportive environment, where everyone is valued and treated with respect.

THE KING’S SCHOOL - A FOUNDATION FOR ALL

King’s Worcester is a thriving independent day school consisting of two junior schools and a senior school for both boys and girls from the ages of 2 to 18. The two Junior Schools, King’s St Alban’s set in the heart of Worcester and King’s Hawford, in a rural setting just north of the city, have their own individual atmospheres. They provide a secure start to a child’s education with small class sizes, excellent pastoral care and variety of sporting and extra- curricular activities. Children are welcome to join Junior Schools at any stage of their education, either from early years, right up to year 6. King’s St Alban’s is set in an idyllic location on the banks of the River Severn, adjacent to King’s Senior School and the magnificent Worcester Cathedral. It’s a vibrant, welcoming PrePreparatory and Junior School which, although steeped in history, combines up-to-date facilities with the latest state-of-the art technology. At King’s St Alban’s, every child’s individuality is embraced. An aspirational, nurturing environment is offered where everyone is encouraged to succeed. Children are taught to be confident in

4

their own abilities, but also tolerant and respectful of others. KSA prides themselves on ensuring that each child develops a joy of learning and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge that allows them to approach their education with energy and enthusiasm, and their future with confidence. King’s Hawford (King’s other Junior School) caters for children aged 2 to 11 and is one of 35 schools to be awarded the LotC Mark (Gold) Certificate for learning outside the classroom. At King’s Hawford school life is not defined by regular hours. Education takes place before, during and after school to make sure that no opportunity to expand children’s minds is lost. Children have an insatiable appetite for learning new things, and engage in a diverse range of extra activities both at lunchtime and after school. Music, ballet, swimming, cookery, photography, Forest School, construction and outward-bound to name but a few. Both Kings St Albans and Kings Hawford feed into King’s Senior School. It has one of the finest settings of any city school in the country. Adjacent to the Cathedral, away from the sound and sight of traffic, it is yet two minutes’ walk from

the pedestrianised city centre and within easy walking distance of train and bus stations. Every pupil is challenged to achieve their potential, and King’s Worcester is consistently one of the leading schools in the region at both A Level and GCSE. Pupils enjoy the challenge of achieving their best because they are equipped with the learning skills, facilities, outstanding teaching and support and encouragement that they need to flourish. Pupils realise hard work and perseverance is key and there is a strong emphasis on independent study – which is an essential foundation for any future learning. Rated “excellent” in their recent Independent School Inspectorate Inspection for both academic and personal pupil development, The King’s School foundation offers more than a just a school. Pupils leave not only academically qualified but also having fulfilled their talents and equipped with a range of invaluable life skills and experiences. You can find out more about King’s on one of their open mornings. For more information visit www.ksw.org.uk/openevent n

Being just outside Hereford this stunning venue is easy to reach from Weobley, Leominster, Hay-on-Wye, Bromyard, Kington and even Presteigne. We will meet at 12pm and the course starts with a 20 minute introduction on how to forage safely and sustainably, and a brief of the general countryside codes where they relate to foragers. Then we’ll set off for a roughly 2.5 hour walk around the area identifying the different edible and poisonous plants, fruits and mushrooms that we come across. We then discuss and taste our finds over a light lunch. Ideal for both the total novice and the intermediate forager looking to improve their knowledge, it is also an unusual and fun family outing! WHAT MAKES DODDERHILL INDEPENDENT GIRLS SCHOOL DIFFERENT? From the very beginning, our smallest girls in Reception are encouraged to aim high and to have no limits to their aspirations. The newly refurbished Pre Prep department (Reception to Year 4) has large, bright rooms leading directly on to an outdoor learning and play area. Every week girls go to our onsite Forest School where they climb trees, build shelters and learn how to start campfires. Girls can explore, ask questions and develop a love of learning, both in and out of the classroom. Girls are taught French from Reception onwards and Spanish begins in Year 5. All the girls have access to our purpose built sport and music facilities and our curriculum adapts to meet the needs of the different age groups. The youngest girls are nurtured in small classes, in a school where traditional values and manners co-exist with the best of modern technology. Here at Dodderhill we celebrate the uniqueness of every individual girl and nurture her talents whatever they may be. Our excellent GCSE results are achieved by giving the girls confidence in their own ability from the earliest age. When you join Dodderhill, you become part of our family and a member of a school where everyone will know your name. Girls enjoy

SCHOOL OPEN EVENTS

MEET OUR TRAINEE TEACHERS – JESSICA Why did you choose South Bromsgrove? I went to their open evening in September and immediately fell in love with the school. Their passion for teaching and learning and creating the perfect climate for success was obvious and when I saw their banner for their school direct programme, there was no turning back. Describe a typical day Every day is different in teaching. My ‘normal’ day would begin by making sure I have all my resources ready. I greet my form for registration, then they are off to their first lesson. Although I teach the same subject every lesson, the pupils, the texts and the discussions are consistently changing; each one different from the last. What led you to choose teaching as a career? I was inspired by the commitment, dedication and passion that my teachers exhibited throughout my education. When I recognised my passion for English, I knew I wanted to go into a career where I could make a difference. I wanted to be that teacher that pupils remember in years to come for bringing a subject to life and for believing in them.

What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in teaching? Be careful with what you read in the media! Teaching is a personal experience and when you are teaching in a school that is supporting, nurturing and has the interests of both staff and pupils at the heart of everything they do, it really is one of the most rewarding careers.

QUEEN ELIZABETH HIGH SCHOOL

SUPPORT. BELIEVE. ACHIEVE. Living in a very rural area, we are used to the beauty of the countryside and the urban sprawl that can be a feature of our larger towns and cities. One of the most obvious pointers to this is the vast number of small rural primary schools that many children attend and have grown up within as part of a nurturing environment from early years through to the completion of their SAT’s. Joining a secondary school is very exciting for children, it is a rite of passage that they look forward to and are ready for. As parents and carers it is important to strike that balance between your views and the views of your child when deciding where that will be. Without doubt, those that involve their children fully in the choice see the benefit of having done so. Above all else, the consideration at the forefront of your minds will be “Will my child be happy at this school?”

At Queen Elizabeth High School in Bromyard we pride ourselves on our Unique Selling Point as a small secondary school by national standards with just 320 students. This means we know our students well, and have relationships with their families that support and encourage their development, both academically and socially. Perhaps then it is no surprise that when grading the school ‘Good’ in October 2017, a Senior Inspector said “The school’s culture of pastoral care and safeguarding is exemplary”. In many respects our small size makes the transition to secondary school life a lot easier for our students who quickly settle and form friendships that last. Our children and our parents and carers are our greatest advocates. ParentView shows that of those parents surveyed in the last year, 98% would recommend the school to other

parents with 100% of students being happy. We believe our size enables us to focus in on the needs of our students much more effectively and this is why we encourage you to visit and see for yourself if the environment we have here at Queen Elizabeth High School is one where your child would be happy. We offer transport assistance from a wide range of areas, so why not join us at one of our open events to discover the hidden gem that is Queen Elizabeth High School. Queen Elizabeth High School Bromyard, where every student is supported so that they believe and achieve. n

MALVERN ST JAMES

GIRLS’ SCHOOL Malvern St James is a leading independent school in Great Malvern, Worcestershire, for girls aged 4-18. What helps to make us distinct and refreshing, is our recognition and active support for the individual talents, interests and passions of girls, and the liberating and inclusive ethos the school embraces. MSJ doesn’t produce a ‘type’ of girl. We achieve excellent academic results but we are not an exam factory. Our ethos is one of inclusion and respect. Girls can pursue their passions and interests in the field of their choice – all routes are equal. It may be horse riding, engineering, politics, the environment or climbing. We recognise the importance of allowing each individual to grow and flourish. We find ways to support girls to achieve their passions. We nurture a freedom of spirit, respect for others and support of every member of our school

community. Our staff are innovative and passionate about their work and constantly evolve new ways to inspire learning and exploration of their subjects, often beyond the curriculum. We actively encourage debate and open discussion. We explore the world around us, at home and across the globe. We believe in maintaining truth and transparency as a school community.

MSJ is a refreshing and inspiring school for girls. A school that helps girls to truly develop their thinking skills, to explore who they are and to develop the courage and self-belief to go out into the world and be true to who they are. SCHOOL OPEN EVENTS

HANLEY CASTLE HIGH SCHOOL Hanley Castle High School is one of the most successful schools in Great Britain. Founded in 1326, the school has a long history of academic excellence. 2018 has been another successful year with the school, its staff and students winning a number of awards, including “Secondary School of the Year” at the Worcestershire Education Awards, 2018.

GCSE results show that Hanley Castle students are exceptionally high achievers. Around 30% of all GCSE grades are awarded at either A or A* grade. The percentage of students achieving the prestigious English Baccalaureate is around 40% - almost twice the national average. A-level results are extremely strong, particularly in academic subjects such as mathematics, physics and chemistry. Of course exam results are important, but there are other areas of a school’s performance which matter just as much. The success of the school

means that it is able to continue to offer a broad range of subjects – both to younger pupils and to the growing number of sixth form students from across Worcestershire who choose Hanley Castle for their post-16 studies. As well as an academic core including English, Mathematics, History and the Sciences, the school offers a rich wider curriculum which challenges and supports the talents of individual students in music, drama and sport.

The school’s well-rounded, highachieving students are much sought after by top universities, and the school sends large numbers of students to Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group universities. However, the success of Hanley Castle students in gaining places is matched by their high performance once their studies have commenced. A large number of our students graduate with First Class Honours degrees from universities including Oxford, Durham and Nottingham.

Hanley Castle High School is one of the oldest schools in England, with a unique blend of traditional values and cuttingedge teaching and facilities. In September 2016 we opened our magnificent new Sixth Form Centre which complements brand new Science laboratories, an upgraded IT infrastructure and a magnificent sports hall. Hanley Castle was visited by Ofsted in June 2017. The inspection letter highlighted a number of key strengths including:

• the excellent progress made by students resulting in academic success in a wide variety of subject areas; • the excellent behaviour and attitude of our students; • the wealth of enrichment activities offered by the school; • the quality of our sixth form and the success of our students in progressing to top universities. n

WEOBLEY HIGH SCHOOL:

TRULY EXCEPTIONAL! Over the past few years Weobley High School has received recognition both locally and nationally.

By focussing on the wellbeing and happiness of its pupils along with high-quality and engaging teaching, the school has continued to improve rapidly and is now one of the most popular and successful schools in the region. Successive inspections have commented on the outstanding behaviour of the children and the unique and exceptional climate for learning which has resulted inevitably in some very impressive academic outcomes. Nevertheless the school’s success is built on much more than just GCSE results. Pupils are encouraged to embrace a ‘can do’ culture and to take advantage of the plethora of opportunities available to them. As well as trips, both locally and abroad, there is a huge selection of teams and clubs. Popular additions include a Photography

Club, a Trampolining Club, an Equestrian Team and a Glee Club; as well as opportunities to take part and compete in a truly impressive range of sports teams for all age groups.

Creativity is also nurtured through extra-curricular drama, music and dance activities as well as associated GCSE courses in these areas. This leads to a steady flow of concerts and performances as well as the hugely successful biennial Weobley musical which can involve up to 200 pupils! All this takes place in this small, friendly school of just 500 pupils in the heart of the beautiful Herefordshire countryside. It is no surprise that Weobley now attracts pupils from over 20 primary schools across the county and new intakes are becoming increasingly oversubscribed. If you are considering Weobley for your child, please contact us on 01544 318159 to arrange a personal tour. n
