The Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School
A school with high expectations and ambition to be the best in everything we do. We are a school with a fantastic learning community which enables students to flourish academically and socially. In a recent Ofsted visit (July 2021) under the new more demanding inspection framework, Overall effectiveness was judged to be ‘Good’ in addition to every part of the framework judgements. The inspection report describes that; “This school encourages pupils to be themselves. Pupils are confident to share their ideas and opinions. There is a culture of mutual respect. Relationships between staff and pupils are strong. Staff look after pupils well. The pastoral support given to them is highly effective. Pupils say they enjoy school and are happy” Our central ethos of care, respect for the needs of others, courtesy and a warm community feel provides an atmosphere where our students can make the very best of their talents to achieve success and are inspired to chase their dreams. Bishop’s school offers a wealth of opportunities for our students. Our focus is high quality teaching and learning with exciting and engaging lessons that enable all students to fulfil their potential. Coupled with learning, we focus on the person and delivering the highest possible personalised pastoral care with “exemplary pastoral care” being cited in our recent inspections.
Bishop’s school offers a huge range of activities, open to all. We have national, world and European champions in several sports. In Music our students have a wide range of fabulous opportunities to include Ceilidh band, chamber choir, guitar army, show choir, flute choir, sax choir and clarinet ensemble. This year our Creative Arts Team presented a sell-out production of ‘The Wedding Singer’ which showcased the amazing talents of our students. The huge range of extra- curricular activities is an enormous success of the school – these include an activities week, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, an outdoor education trip, Model United Nations day, Medical Mavericks, Battlefields, school productions, Ski trip, forensic science workshop, science club, film club, chess club, Art club, Drama club, computing club, cheerleading, and many more besides. We always work collaboratively with our community to include both students and parents/carers to make decisions within school. We regularly host parent/carer forums to help shape our decision making. Our student council have an active voice and we work with them to drive the school forwards. For further information do please visit www.bhbs.hereford.sch.uk/Prospectus or contact the school. We are always open to visitors.

EDUCATION ALL THE NEWS FROM YOUR LOCAL SCHOOLS
The Importance of Sport Physical Health Being physically healthy is extremely important for primary school children as their bodies begin to grow and they develop active sporting habits that can carry through to adulthood. According to the Primary Teaching Services (PTS), one in three UK children leave primary school overweight. Daily exercise through sports activities will burn excess calories; keeping weight gain to a minimum and benefitting a child’s bone and muscle strength. Consistent physical activity also promotes healthy heart and lungs, lowers the risks of type 2 diabetes, and keeps blood pressure and cholesterol at a healthy level. Regular exercise has also been shown to help children gain a better nights sleep, which in turn helps children to concentrate during school lessons.
Mental Wellbeing
If you are feeling anxious you are not alone! A
t the Parenting with Anxiety Project at the University of Sussex, we are focused on finding ways to help parents and children navigate the world with confidence. If you feel anxious you may find yourself feeling worried about your children. Our research shows that with the right support parents can help their children become more confident. We now want to find out if families will benefit from an 8-module online course. If you would describe yourself as high in anxiety with a child aged 2-11 we would love you to join us. Half of the parents will do the course and the others will just answer questions, but everyone is playing an important role in helping children with anxiety. www.parentingwithanxiety.org.uk
As online learning, social media and video games become more popular with younger generations, primary school children are at risk of spending many hours of the day sat down, in front of a screen. Not only does this negatively impact a child’s physical health, it can also be a negative influence to their mental wellbeing. Taking a break from screens to participate in a sport activity has been known to lower levels of stress and anxiety in children. It also gives children a chance to take a break from schoolwork, get some fresh air and connect with the outside world. This can create a positive attitude towards sports and exercise, which can carry through to adulthood.
Social Activities Sport activities are a brilliant way of socialising and making new friends outside of the classroom environment. Most sports, such as football or netball, require teamwork and team building skills, which can help a child to feel connected within a group and build upon their own social confidence.
Where to go? There are many places that cater to children’s sports and general exercise. Try checking out what your local leisure centre or after school clubs have to offer. Sport classes are usually so much fun that your child might not even realise they are getting any exercise at all, and regular attendance will build confidence and friendships too. You can also look to our What’s On Where guide in this issue of Primary Times to find fun sport clubs and activities in your local area that might interest you and your child. 4 MAY HALF TERM 2022

LIFE-CHANGING LIBRARIES WITH
CRESSIDA
COWELL
Primary Times chats with Cressida Cowell, best selling author of How To Train Your Dragon, about her Life-changing Libraries campaign and the effect it has had on children so far. research show a reader for pleasure is more likely to be happier, healthier, to do better at school, and to vote – all irrespective of background. The more a child reads, the greater the benefits. And that is where libraries come in. Libraries are where the magic happens. They are like sweetshops where all the sweets are FREE. When I was a child in the 1970’s, we went to the public library once a week, that was the norm back then, and I must have read practically every single book in that entire library. It allows a child to experiment, find out what they like. I was convinced then about the importance of libraries – both local and school libraries – and I’m more convinced than ever of their magical power to create life-long readers.
Cressida Cowell, the Waterstones Children’s Laureate 2019-2022 and best selling author, launched the Life-changing Libraries campaign last year. The campaign aims to place primary school libraries at the heart of the governements yearly investments after it highlighted a severe long-term underfunding. Primary Times caught up with Cressida to understand the importance of libraries, and to see the impact that the campaign has made so far. “The benefits of engaging with books and becoming a reader for pleasure are lifechanging,” Cressida explains. “Decades of 6 MAY HALF TERM 2022
“The project spotlights the four pillars of a successful school library – space, book provision, expertise, and whole-school and parent involvement – through the creation of ‘pilot’ libraries in six very different primary schools. It has been extraordinary to see how these beautiful new spaces, since opening last June, have become the beating heart of these six schools, encouraging the development of well-being, empathy, learning and a whole school reading culture.
people are surprised that we even need to make this ask. Often, people know that reading for pleasure is important, but don’t know quite how life-changing it is. Reading opens up a world of new possibilities for children and develops aspiration, with research showing that it can drive social mobility and mitigate the effect of social inequality. But, how can a child become a reader for pleasure if their parents or carers cannot afford books, and their primary school has no library, or that library is woefully insufficient? “We are nearing the end of these year-long pilots and will be sharing our findings in June – but the words of a young boy in Griffin primary school, where we introduced a new ‘Life-changing Library’ keep returning to me. When asked, ‘What does this library mean to you?’, his reply was: ‘Well, it means I don’t have to read the same book, again and again and again.’”
“What has been clear from the reaction to the campaign is that people assume that all primary schools have libraries, and that those are well-stocked and resourced. But, this is simply not the case. One in eight primary schools has no library provision. Does yours? I’ve been struck by how many primarytimes.co.uk/hereford_worcester

This summer Worcester BID is transforming the streets into a summer garden. Working with local artists, garden centres and city dressers. As part of the summer activations in these two streets Worcester BID, alongside partners Worcester City Council, will be organising the Royal Garden Party allowing members of the community to sit out and relax, order directly from participating cafes and restaurants and enjoy the family-friendly entertainment.’ The Royal Garden Party is to take place on the Jubilee weekend. No street party in your area? Fancy going to a giant street party? Make it the Royal Garden Party, Worcester and enjoy a free family day out in the historical surroundings of a Tudor Street whilst celebrating the 70 years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. HEREFORD CATHEDRAL LAUNCHES NEW TODDLER GROUP
Hereford Cathedral launches a brand-new Toddler Group for young children and their grown-ups.
Starting on 9 May, and meeting every Monday in term-time at 9.30am, the Group will be free for families to attend. Taking place inside the beautiful cathedral, the sessions will be led by cathedral staff and volunteers. After a bible story, children will be able to take part in a craft activity, enjoy playing together and finish the session with a song - lots of fun, and refreshments will be available for both parents and toddlers. Sarah Brown, the Dean of Hereford, is excited, 10 MAY HALF TERM 2022
“I’m so happy to invite the tiniest children, and their parents and carers, to come in and discover what a great place this amazing cathedral can be. The Cathedral really is a place for little children, because it is God’s house, and He tells us to welcome the little children in his name. This time of fun (with a bit of learning thrown in) is our gift to the little ones and hopefully a time of rest and refreshment for parents and carers too.”
William Talbot-Ponsonby, Head of Education & Family Learning, adds: “we are so looking forward to launching our Toddler Group in May. It’s open to all, whether you visit the cathedral regularly or have never stepped
through the doors – we see it as a great opportunity for us to welcome in new people and to share our wonderful building. If you would also like to help out in running the sessions, please contact me at education@ herefordcathedral.org, as I am always on the lookout for enthusiastic volunteers to help share their Christian knowledge and inspire young people.” The Toddler Group will be free to attend, and advance booking is not required – just turn up on the day.
