MUM FROM MALVERN
PRESENTED WITH NATIONAL AWARD The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) has presented Malvern-based mum Lynette Webster with a prestigious Giving Voice Award. Lynette was recognised for raising public awareness of children’s communication needs through the national media. The annual Giving Voice Awards celebrate those who have campaigned to highlight how speech and language therapy transforms lives. They are presented to individuals and organisations that have made particularly valuable contributions
to improving the lives of people with communication and/or swallowing needs.
condition which affects the ability of a child to coordinate movements to produce speech.
Following the June publication of the Children’s Commissioner for England’s, damning report We Need to Talk: Access to Speech and Language Therapy, Lynette Webster was interviewed live on the BBC Victoria Derbyshire television programme and Channel 5 News about her fight to get her son, Patrick, the speech and language therapy support he needs. Patrick, age 4, has severe developmental verbal dyspraxia – a
The Giving Voice Awards judges were grateful to Lynette for providing the public with a valuable insight into how children benefit from speech and language therapy and the consequences of them not getting the support they need. Lynette’s powerful interview shined a light on how the current postcode lottery of speech and language therapy provision for children is completely unacceptable in the 21st century. n
EVACUATION ON THE SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY Even with the incessant heavy rain, Year 2 pupils from Bromsgrove PrePreparatory School enjoyed a stunning start to their “We’ll Meet Again” topic when they were evacuated by train on the Severn Valley Railway, through the English countryside.
During the day, the children experienced first-hand the life of an evacuee in wartime Britain. They took part in a variety of wartime themed activities, from carrying out household tasks in a WWII parlour, playing traditional 1940s games, to making a bucket chain, and experiencing an Anderson shelter during an air-raid drill. n

BULLY-PROOF YOUR CHILD WITH TAEKWONDO!
As parents we worry what our children experience when we’re not there to watch over them; if they will be able to handle situations with confidence and protect themselves if needed. All we can do is our best to equip them with the skills they need in life. You make them safer in water with swimming lessons. Make them safer on the streets with Taekwondo. Taekwondo teaches knowledge of self defence and the values needed to be the strongest, best version of themselves. Courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit are the tenets of the art and build good character in the young members. The Korean art has many gains for children including improving their fitness, strength, flexibility and agility. Instructors take pride to instil a sense of confidence in students

that with hard work and self-belief, anything is possible. At Wyre Forest Taekwondo we help reduce bullying by teaching our little ones about positive body language, the power of words, and the value of walking away. We stress the importance of communication with all adults around you to make them aware of any situation at the earliest stage. We also focus on how to treat others, being includers and being aware of how words and behaviour can hurt others. When an incident occurs, instructors are approached by individual students to give practical advice on a particular ‘attack’ e.g. hair pulling or being backed into a corner. Students are taught strong defensive methods which are enough to put off any bully. The classes also touch on stranger danger and releasing from the grasp of a grown up.
If your child is a victim of bullying, enrolling them in a martial arts class will provide them with the skill, confidence and knowledge to bully-proof themselves. It will give them and you confidence as they grow into a young adult that the only person who should worry is the one who tries to mess with your child.
