How Kinaesthetic Learners Can Benefit from EDUCATIONAL EXCURSIONS

Did you know that every person has a specific learning style that helps them retain new information better? There are three main types of learning style categories that most people fall under – Auditory, Visual and Kinaesthetic.

If you’re a kinaesthetic learner, it means that while you can gain knowledge by listening to or reading instructions, you make your deepest learning connections by doing. Many learners of this type feel like they’re getting a better learning experience when they are able to be tactile with learning materials and use trial and error to test things out.

It’s also likely that as a kinaesthetic learner you’ll excel at sports, get restless when you haven’t been active in a while, and hugely enjoy opportunities to go on excursions and day trips to fun, interesting places.

Educational excursions are therefore a brilliant way to bring multi-sensory learning to kids who have a preference for learning in this way.

Top Types of Educational Excursions for Maximum Learning:

Museums – Being able to walk around and navigate museum displays and artefacts will leave a much bigger impression on most children than just being told about them. Even better, when displays allow children to touch or be interactive with the exhibit, they’ll learn something new that they won’t easily forget.

Historical Sites – When Heritage Trusts recreate historic villages or Castle Grounds, it’s super exciting for kids to get involved with and feel like they’re living out a day in the life of someone from History! They won’t even realise they’re learning as they just have tons of fun role playing.

Zoo’s, Aquariums and Nature Reserves – You can learn a lot about wildlife from books, but why not go and be amongst it? For a

kinaesthetic learner, watching a zoo keeper’s demonstration, touching the fish in the Aquarium touch pool, or pond dipping at your local Nature Reserve will have their neurons firing as they get hands-on with

A study by VARK suggested that 87.1% of people have some level of preference for kinaesthetic learning, and that goes for all ages and genders – VARK www.vark-learn.com/research-statistics

Teachers Tip: You can cater for kinaesthetic learners in your classroom by integrating movement into educational games. Using the space in the classroom to get students to answer questions will make the activity more memorable and help the information imprint in their minds better. For example, the first person to stand up gets to answer the quiz question, or each corner of the room represents a different multiple-choice answer and students must stand where they think is correct!
