Do you sometimes lack confidence

when it comes to your children?

All parents want their children to do well at school and to succeed; however, many simply do not know where to start. Everything seems to have changed since your own schooldays, and you don’t want to confuse your children.

your children’s learning. Some courses are just for parents and carers; in others, families learn together. A Family Learning course can be the start of planning a better future for yourself and your children. They can also help if you are lonely, stressed and/or a less confident parent and would love to get out of your house and make new friends, at the same time as increasing your skills and those of your child.

You could join a Family Learning class to: • Fill in any gaps in your English or maths skills so that you can help your children with school and homework. • Have fun with your children and get new ideas of things to do as a family. • Prepare your children to start school so that they can cope better with the change from home to school and enjoy learning at the start.

• Understand how your children develop and learn from toddlers to teens, and how you can help them grow in confidence. • Develop skills you need to adapt to changes in family circumstances such as benefits, income and work. • Learn how to manage stress and communicate better, feel more confident, positive, and set goals for the future. Free Family Learning courses and activities take place across Surrey and can help you improve your own skills and support

4

Primary Times Back to School 2017

Courses include: • Family English, Maths and Language. • Getting ready for nursery, and getting ready for school. • Learning through play/ understanding children’s behaviour. • Family Budgeting. • Digital skills for parents e.g. e-safety and coding. • Cookery, gardening and stress management courses. • Creative skills for parents e.g. develop your storytelling skills. Why not act now and find out more. Family Learning is a team within Surrey County Council’s Adult Learning service. If you are interested, try contacting your child’s school or Children’s Centre to ask whether they already run courses or would consider starting a course. New adventure-filled

premium soft play

centre to open in Horley The founders of Lets Race and Lets Golf, the UK’s only dedicated Formula 1 and Golf simulator centre in Horley on the borders of Surrey and Sussex, are delighted to announce that they will be opening Lets Explore - a new premium soft play centre for children. Officially opening on Saturday 21st October with a visit from a special guest - children’s favourite, Dora the Explorer - Lets Explore will feature a three storey state-of-the-art adventure filled play zone, a unique mezzanine level with play zone access for private parties, a separate toddler and baby area, and a brand new relaxing café area for parents and guests. With three distinctly themed zones for littles ones to discover including under the sea, the jungle and space, Lets Explore has been designed to truly unleash the imagination of youngsters. The elements incorporated within the design have been cleverly thought out, not only to encourage physical activity, but to also stimulate the mind with educational aspects throughout. Example features include a submarine and periscope panel, airlock crawl tube, treasure chest with challenge to search for golden coins, and an eye spy live fish action zone to name but a few. Stuart Duncan has been appointed as the new general manager of the facility. Stuart, a new father himself, has over 15 years’ experience in the leisure industry and, prior to joining Lets Explore, ran the well-established Gambado soft play centre in Beckenham. Stuart commented, “I am very excited to be working with the team at Lets Race and Lets Golf to bring their Lets Explore vision to life. The play centre will be a huge asset to the area and our goal is for it to be a premium destination for all families with young children. We want to be the cleanest, friendliest and most educational soft play centre in the area. He went on to explain: “I have worked in the soft play industry for many years now and am all too aware of the challenges that all types of leisure facilities face. Hygiene, for example is one of the big challenges. That’s why we have purposely designed and adjusted the soft play frame itself so that it can be easily cleansed after every session and

14

deep cleaned on a more frequent basis. We will also have hygiene stations situated throughout the site. Providing a comfortable environment for adults is another of the bigger challenges. We want to steer clear of squashed, uncomfortable seating areas with basic refreshments and food menus. Lets Explore’s building layout, purpose built café and higher end menu has taken all of this into consideration, so I am hopeful that we can offer a more comfortable, enjoyable and tastier experience for adults too. ”

Ben Stephenson, Commercial Manager for the Lets Race, Lets Golf and Lets Explore group, added: “We are thrilled to be branching out into the soft play industry with our newest Lets Explore venture. We had the space on our site in Horley and it seemed the perfect solution to complement our Formula 1 race simulators, golf simulators, and onsite restaurant Blacks Burgers. When Lets Explore opens in October we will be able to offer a one-stop fun, safe and dry leisure destination for every member of the family, no matter what their age.” Tickets for the open day event on Saturday 21st October, with Dora the Explorer, will be priced at £10 per child which includes a free adult entry pass and goody bag for the child. To purchase tickets and book a session slot (2 hours per session) please visit www.softplaysurrey.co.uk From Sunday 22nd October onwards, each two-hour session will be priced between £4.25 and £7.25 depending on off peak (Mon-Fri) or peak (weekend) timings and child’s age. Babies under one-year-old are admitted free of charge and adult tickets will be capped at £2 depending on the session day and time. Lets Explore will also be launching a membership scheme as follows: OFF PEAK – Inclusive of two free named adults, 10% off retail/cafe and unlimited usage - £8.95pm PEAK – Any two adults free, 10% off retail/cafe unlimited usage, birthday child goes free at future party bookings - £10.95pm Parents wishing to learn more about the facility or book memberships ahead of the launch are encouraged to visit the website, or email stuart@letsrace.co.uk. n

Help save £3 million a year bags or liners is the cleanest and easiest way to deal with your food waste – you can use them to line your kitchen caddy and minimise drips, or put smelly food in a bag, tie it up and put it straight into your outside food waste bin. All types of plastic bags can be used, including old shopping bags, pedal bin liners, or bread, cereal, fruit or vegetable bags, but please don’t use black bin bags. The food is taken to an anaerobic digestion plant where it’s used to generate green electricity and fertiliser used in farming.

Did you know that recycling your food waste through your collection service rather than putting it in your rubbish bin will help save over £3 million a year? That’s because it costs less than half to recycle food waste through anaerobic digestion than it does to dispose of it. So putting all your food waste in your caddy every week means you’re helping to protect other council services like social care, libraries and schools. While most Surrey residents use their caddy

16

Primary Times Back to School 2017

there’s more we can all do to help make the savings. Surrey’s councils will be working with residents this autumn to encourage them to recycle all of their food waste every week. To start making a difference today, visit recycleforsurrey.org.uk where you can find out more about your food waste collection, and how to order replacement indoor kitchen caddies and outside food waste bins if yours are missing or damaged. To make it cleaner and easier to recycle your food waste, you can line your caddy with a plastic bag or liner. Using plastic

Mike Goodman, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Planning, said: “Putting food waste in your caddy for collection is clean and easy when you use plastic bags instead of the old compostable liners, which cost more and could easily leak or tear. If everybody put their food waste in their caddy your councils would have more money to spend on the services you value most.” The Recycle for Surrey website also has tips on how you can reduce the amount of food you throw away – which can save the average family £60 a month. Simple things like storing your food correctly and not being tempted by offers at the supermarket can make a surprising difference to how much food you waste. n

A popular children’s camp in the heart of Surrey, Painshill’s Wild Halloween Camp forms part of a series of ‘wild’ camps run across the course of the year, for children aged between 8 and 13 years. Whether you’re looking to book for just one day, or the full week, to book your slot visit www.painshill. co.uk. Making the last year at primary school, the best!

Stepping over the threshold of the Year Six classroom as they embark on the last leg of their primary school journey is a big milestone for children up and down the country. It’s the end of an era and an important year where they will be encouraged to be more independent, grow in confidence and explore the boundaries of their comfort zone. So with lots to look forward to, how can parents and children prepare for secondary school? PTA UK’s Marketing and Communications Manager Sarah West, gives us the low-down.

The excitement is mounting. You’re well into the first term of your last year at primary school: it’s time to make those final choices for secondary school and teachers and children will be gearing up for the SATs. But it’s the end of an era, so don’t let the final precious ‘moments’ that your children will experience in these primary years, pass you by. There will be harvest festivals, Christmas plays, spring recitals, sports days and summer fairs to enjoy as well as a likely ‘residential trip’ where Year 6 children may get the chance to take part in activity-filled and action-packed time away from their homes and families, perhaps even for the first time. There’ll be photos to compile, Year Books to produce, end of year parties to organise and many a thank you to say. And in amongst this there’ll be the preparation for the next important phase in your child’s school career… their passage to Key Stage 3 and most likely, a new school.

So with all this in mind, we’ve gathered together our top tips on making the most of your and your child’s last year:

1. Get involved! If you’ve never helped out on the PTA, or your participation has dwindled over time, why not give it one final go and enjoy doing something worthwhile with the families you’ve gotten to know over the past few years? Secondary school is very different from the smaller school community you are used to. There’s generally less interaction between parents and almost certainly fewer opportunities to engage with others at the gates. The experience is rewarding and will stand you in good stead if you do decide to join the PTA or parent group at your child’s new secondary school where the opportunities may be different but all help to build the school community. 2. Volunteer your time and skills on something for the Year 6 leavers (including your own). If you feel you’re short on time, how about getting involved in a specific project, like coordinating the hoodies for leavers, helping out with the class party or buying the gifts for the staff. You could even arrange a ‘leaving party’ for the parents in your year. It’s not just the end of an era for the children, it is for you too. 3. Share your experiences You’ve learned so much and shared so many experiences with other families at the school

Developing

potential for life St. Andrew’s School was founded in 1937 and is a respected and thriving co-educational Prep School, set in 11 acres of grounds near Woking town centre. The School seeks to create a nurturing and happy environment in which all pupils are encouraged and enabled to develop their potential to the full. At St. Andrew’s children feel secure and confident and are highly motivated to perform to the best of their ability in all aspects of school life. Children are prepared for entrance and scholarship exams to a wide range of independent senior schools and there are specialist teaching facilities for all subjects including science, ICT, music and art. The curriculum is broad and the school places great emphasis on music, sport and the arts. In

18

our latest ISI Inspection, (January 2016), we were extremely proud to be rated ‘excellent’ in all areas.

St. Andrew’s has excellent on-site facilities including an all weather sports surface, sports pitches, tennis courts, cricket nets and a swimming pool. Children can be supervised at school from 8am and, through our extensive after-school activities programme for Year 3 and above, until 6/6.30 pm most evenings during the week. An after-school club is also available until 6pm for PrePrep, Year 3 and Year 4 children. Don’t take our word for it! Come to our next open morning and have a guided tour by one of our senior pupils. that you probably don’t even realise the wealth of information and advice you’ve got up your sleeve. Why not consider supporting the school parent council or forum and encourage newer families to get involved. Sharing your views with other parents and the teaching community on the new homework policy or changes to the school uniform for example, and encouraging others to share their opinion is important in helping parents to see themselves as ‘partners’ in their children’s education. You may only be there for a few more months, but you can still make a difference. 4. Go on the school trip! If you’ve never been able to accompany the class on a school trip, why not give it a go? You’ve got the experience now to know what’s likely to come up in the school diary, so plan accordingly and book off the time well in advance. There are always sporting and cultural events taking place, so see what interests you and make the most of it. 5. One last fundraising push? Over the years, your children will have benefited from the resources, activities and opportunities that the school PTA has provided through all of its fundraising efforts. If you’ve got the skills, why not consider a final homage to these efforts by offering to fill in a grant funding application; set up an environmental task force to improve the school garden; or club together with other parents in your year to leave a legacy, such as a ‘friendship bench’. n

Bell Farm Primary School Bell Farm is a friendly, happy, hardworking environment where respect for others, positive attitudes towards work and behavior are not only encouraged but nurtured, and each child is given the opportunity to flourish. Through our values led curriculum and Rights Respecting agenda we endeavor to ensure that every child excels academically, socially, morally and spiritually and truly feels ‘proud to belong’ to our inclusive,

vibrant and successful school. Our mission is to prepare every child for their future by providing a caring and exciting environment where our children develop independence and self-confidence whilst achieving their full potential. We do this through having high expectations, fostering community links, valuing our extensive outdoor grounds and newly purpose built classrooms and offering first class pastoral and well-being support. n

LITTLE ED’S NURSERY “you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think...” A A Milne, Winnie the Pooh Such powerful words from 100 Acre Wood. Well, our “Little Ed’s Nursery” may not sit in quite such an expanse of woodland (a mere 40 acres of Surrey countryside to be precise) and the words of encouragement and optimism may not come from one so small or be aimed at one so obsessed with sticky honey but the sentiment is definitely one which sits comfortably with the principle of the school. Our ethos at Little Ed’s Nursery is to create curious minds and produce happy memories. Catering for girls and boys from the age of 2 through to 5 years old, our approach to nursery inspires independence, creativity and imagination, with the aim of equipping our children with the skills necessary for a smooth transition to the next stage of their education.

Our bright and appealing classrooms form an encouraging environment for our children, and the small class culture that filters naturally from the main school guarantees a maximum of 1:4 or 1:6 ratio depending upon age. We offer a wide range of activities and unlike many Nurseries, Little Ed’s children benefit greatly from weekly visits from the Prep School’s Specialist Teaching staff who lead sessions in French, Sport, Music and Dance. We are also joined by the team from Drama in Pyjamas every Friday afternoon! Offering a 46 week provision, sometimes the most ordinary things can be made extraordinary simply by doing them with the right people, so join us at Little Ed’s where your child’s adventure of learning begins. n For more information please contact Georgina Sexton, Registrar admissions@saintedmunds.co.uk 01428 604808 www.saintedmunds.co.uk

Entry into Year 7 September 2018

INNOVATIVE. PROGRESSIVE. MODERN

Lingfield College Co-educational Day School The school has a very strong academic ethos. Results in recent years have been outstanding and the curriculum is broad and diverse. There is a wealth of extracurricular activities available and the students are encouraged to make full use of them to develop their own individual strengths and personalities.

Lingfield College is a co-educational day school with 900 boys and girls aged from 2½ to 18. It combines tradition and innovation to give academic excellence. Lingfield is situated within 40 acres of attractive grounds, overlooking Surrey’s greenest countryside. It borders the three counties of Surrey, Sussex and Kent. It is a wonderful school that provides an excellent all-round education in a friendly, supportive environment, from nursery years to Sixth Form. The pupils are open, confident, focused and passionate about their school.

We are a dynamic, forward thinking school which aims to develop students and to both prepare them for the challenges they will face after school and enable them to acquire life skills, selfawareness and compassion. We want our students to not only make the most of their abilities, wherever they lie, but also to become adults who can make a valuable contribution to society over the course of their adult lives. We celebrate each individual student and aim to ensure that they leave the school as confident young adults who have high self-esteem and are prepared for the next stage in

their lives. Our staff are extraordinarily hard-working and go beyond the call of duty to help each student reach their full potential.

We are also proud of the pastoral care we provide for our students. We value them as individuals and do everything in our power to make their time here as happy as possible and to help them cope with the ups and downs of different stages of life through to adulthood. We have very positive relationships with the students’ parents and believe very strongly that by working closely with them, we can support their children most effectively. It is only by visiting the school that you can get a flavour of it. We would be delighted to show you around on a school day so that you can see students and staff at work. n www.lingfieldcollege.co.uk

Edgeborough Preparatory School day and boarding senior schools available both locally and nationally.

The previous academic year saw our pupils offered 11 scholarships to prestigious senior schools, recognising excellence in academic ability, sport, music and all-round talent. are key elements in ensuring that young people are able to succeed at school and they most certainly do enjoy success at Sunbury Manor. The combination of old fashioned discipline, warmth, caring, good teaching and the widest possible range of opportunities for all young people ensures that students of all abilities achieve their potential with us. This is why a significant number of staff, including the Headteacher, have chosen Sunbury Manor for the secondary education of their children. The school benefits from excellent facilities on a large site with extensive playing fields. Our IT facilities are accessible to all students from home. We use an online system for parents called “Insight”, and through this parents are able to look at their child’s attendance, behaviour and attainment day by day, email teachers, book appointments with teachers and even see what they are eating in the canteen! We teach the separate Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Biology throughout all five years.

Extra-curricular activities give students the chance to take part in a very wide range of activities, including the chance to train as ball boys and girls at Wimbledon. This year five students got through the rigorous selection process to appear on court through the Wimbledon fortnight, most of whom worked on one of the finals. Sunbury Manor is a very successful school in local sporting competitions. The Physical Education department offers students of all abilities a wide range of enrichment opportunities. Students were offered many PE trips in 2016/17 which included trips to Wembley, Twickenham Rugby Stadium, The Oval,

Sky Academy, London Irish, Wentworth and Top Golf.

We showcase the talents of our musical and drama students in successful performances and we offer a huge range of trips within the UK and internationally. Just recently we have had trips to Ypres Battlefields, Budapest, Prague, Barcelona, Paris, Skiing in Killington - USA, and our Year 7 students enjoyed a wonderful 3 day activity camp at Blacklands Farm in Sussex. In addition our students have enjoyed trips closer to home which included The Rose Theatre, The Big Bang Fair, Surrey University, Sky Academy, British Museum, Grant Museum of Zoology and The Royal Courts of Justice. We celebrate success at Sunbury Manor and delight in the examination results achieved by our students and in their triumphs in all aspects of school life, and you will find lots of success stories on our website (www.sunburymanor.surrey.sch. uk).
