For the first time in the history of Heritage Open Days, the festival will take place across two weekends in September. Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission.

Every year in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches to historic houses. It is a once-ayear chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture. Free of charge and literally on people’s doorstep, Heritage Open Days is an event for everyone, whatever their background, age and ability.

Time: 4.30pm – 5.45pm. art-K runs art classes for children and adults in a safe and creative environment. art-K is an art club for children and adults learn artistic skills in an inspirational, calm environment. We teach a range of media and techniques in 2D and 3D projects. We provide a safe environment where children grow into amazing young artists brimming with self-confidence. Our projects are unique and age-based so children are continuously developing. We cover mediums such as acrylics, watercolours, pastels, oil pastels, inks, oils... and we also do 3D work with papier-mâché, clay and paper sculpture. We believe it’s very important for the younger children to develop their visual vocabulary so that they can draw from their head. CHANGING LIFE’S CHANCES THROUGH SOCIAL MOBILITY IN SCHOOLS We change the life chances of children when we give them unimagined educational opportunities. These children can then go on and make the world a better place, commissioned to follow the moral compass fashioned in the ethos of a great school.

That is social mobility.

I know a young woman, now on the fast track for the British Civil Service after volunteering in Syrian Refugee Camps last year with a First Class Cambridge degree on her CV. The possibilities for her to write an amazing life story in the years ahead have been transformed from the days when, she says, her family at times relied upon charity just for food and certainly would never have dreamed of the educational successes that she earned with a full Bursary to Reigate Grammar School.

ISC schools aid social mobility through programmes including bursaries, partnerships with community groups, thousands of hours of volunteering, training teachers, developing curriculum and learning partnerships with maintained schools, sponsoring Free Schools, offering staff as Governors, teaching subjects such as Further Maths or Physics, advice and guidance programmes for universities or degree apprenticeships and more.

Helping all schools be as good as the best supports social mobility. UK independent schools deserve a world class reputation and it is equally true that there are many outstanding maintained schools. The injustice that motivates extensive and growing partnership programmes is that there are not enough places in great schools.

Bursary programmes also aid social mobility and ISC schools increased the value of means tested bursaries by 4.8% in 2017 valued at £362 million. This is possible because many ISC schools have superb fundraising programmes.

43,000 pupils receive means-tested assistance, with 43.7% of these having more than half their fees remitted. A third of pupils at ISC schools are on reduced fees and about 6000 pupils pay no fees at all. Means-tested bursaries are sometimes called assisted places. At Reigate Grammar School, my own school, our bursary scheme means that we have approximately twice the proportion of students qualifying for Free School Meals as found at a typical state Grammar School. My interest in animals and the sciences led me to discover and admire the work of two amazing women, Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall, who transformed the scientific method behind primatology.

Miss Suzanna Lopez is Head of the Girls’ Preparatory School from September 2018 at Manor House School in Bookham, Surrey. She began her teaching career in the maintained sector and worked in several inner London state schools before moving to the independent sector in 2011.

Where do you find inspiration?

What are your expectations for your pupils?

I think that girls should be independent in their thoughts and actions and be able to stand up for what they believe in; to be resilient, to have the strength and ability to overcome challenges and to have compassion for those less fortunate than themselves. I believe it is important to help girls understand how they can improve their learning by recognising their own strengths.

What, in your opinion, are the best foundations of a good education?

A positive and safe learning environment, teaching staff who are creative and innovative, strong home-school partnerships where parents are fully

supportive and involved in their child’s education and the teaching of core values and life skills, including those linked with new technologies.

Why do you think an independent education at an early age is beneficial?

What children need most is time and lots of attention in a stimulating, nurturing and safe environment. Smaller class sizes offer greater individualised teaching and learning underpinned by strong discipline, high expectations and a healthy sense of competition. A broader and more balanced curriculum affords wider opportunities for personal growth, as well as academic success.

A much wider variety of extra-curricular activities means that independent schools like Manor House instil a unique sense of self-belief in pupils, helping them to develop confidence and resilience and prepare them for life as a successful adult.

How will you prepare your pupils at Manor House for the future?

Months in the making, the team at Little Ed’s are delighted with their new outside Sensory play area and the fun and exciting opportunities it provides.

BRITISH SCHOOL OF ROCK’S LITTLE ROCKERS CLASSES

UNIQUELY SUCCESSFUL MUSICAL EDUCATION FOR 6 TO 8 YEAR OLDS

How do you make sure that your child’s first experience of musical education is a positive one that will give them a love of music that will last a lifetime?

Designed specifically for 6 to 8 year olds, all Little Rockers classes include drums, bass guitar, singing and movement in an age specific curriculum that includes all of the great educational principles of the British School of Rock curriculum. They also enjoy games specifically designed to improve their musical ability. Every child plays two instruments, sings and dances each week - as well as playing live in a band for parents at the end of each session!

British School of Rock grew out the belief by Paul Riley and David Sprigg that Music Education badly needed a shot in the arm. Having played in a band together since their teens, they wanted share the joy and sense of achievement that had peppered their musical careers. The final prompt came from the introduction of the English Baccalaureate in secondary schools in 2010. It was intended to boost the number of students studying science and languages. Sadly, an unintended consequence was that the number of students taking GCSE Music dropped by nearly 10%.

All too often traditional musical education destroys a child’s enthusiasm within the first few weeks and they give up – never achieving what they are capable of.

Paul and David reasoned that the process of learning an instrument in school is often hampered by the way in which traditional instrumental tuition is structured. The emphasis is usually on the mechanics of playing, rather than what the students really want to do – which is to perform together with their friends. The key was to increase the excitement by focusing on performance. Each British School of Rock class ends with the students playing together in a band, giving them an enjoyable outcome to aim for when they do their homework rather than simply to ‘practise’.

Underpinning all classes is a commitment to quality. Class sizes are limited, with a maximum of 5 students to each degree-qualified instructor.

All students from age 9 are taught to read music. The school chooses not to use simplified ‘Tab’ music notation in its classes but instead the standard notation used by all musicians, regardless of their instrument.

Not a singer? Not a drummer? - British School of Rock encourages undecided instrumental beginners to start with bass guitar as some students can be put off by the complexity and real physical pain of playing an electric guitar. As Bryan Adams says “I got my first real six-string, bought it at the five-and-dime, played it ‘til my fingers bled...” Many of the world’s greatest musicians and songwriters such as Sir Paul McCartney and Sting are bass guitarists.

Paul and David drew on years of experience in Education and Business. Paul had worked in Music Education all his life, for many years at a senior management level within the state sector.

David co-founded Stagecoach Theatre Arts in 1988, and as Managing Director built it over 25 years into an organisation educating 42,000 students in 11 countries.

British School of Rock started in Guildford and in Kingston upon Thames and Paul and David set about putting its unique curriculum model into practice. Within two years it was clear that the success of these schools had outgrown the original locations and more schools were added in Surrey and Middlesex. More and more students joined the schools to become engaged with music and “play in a real rock band, every week!”

As the schools grew, so did requests from parents… ”my daughter is really enjoying learning bass guitar with you, how can my six year old start learning to play?” And so Little Rockers was born...

Educational research has shown that children who have experience with music performance score higher in their SATs. A recent report indicates 63 points higher on verbal and 44 points higher in maths for children engaged in music courses. Studying music is not only enjoyable. We wanted to create a more immersive place for children to play and Pirates are the perfect subject matter. Pirates are unisex, they provide unlimited story lines and they have played a part in children’s storey times forever.

When we embarked on our new venture, we knew that being the owners of The Little Gym Camberley meant that parents and children alike already trusted us, our brand and what we stand for. This mean’t it couldn’t be just any other soft play, it had to be a place that parents are happy in too. It had to be clean, safe and friendly. It would offer a cafe, selling great drinks and food, but also more importantly a place children wanted to visit time and time again. A place where they could develop their imagination and be transported to far away places.

With all this in mind, we first focussed our efforts on a clean and safe environment that would always stay that way, using clever technology and hard work. The second was to create a place that could become the stuff of legends for children and thats where we dream’t big and created a 12 metre long Pirate Ship with two decks. As well as this, the kids will be able to lose themselves in our tropical (soft play) hideaway. This isn’t the end though, but just the beginning of the journey and one we want you and your little pirates imagination to help take it as far as they can dream.
