MAVERICK MARTIAL ARTS Mavericks Martial Arts is a full time re-imagining education at
ISL Surrey Primary School in Woking
Last summer, inspired by the Reggio Emilio approach, we redesigned our early years learning environment to incorporate a range of loose parts and natural resources.
opportunities for our children to develop their creativity and critical thinking. The rich language we have overhead as child plan, negotiate, review and share their models has been so rewarding.
We made a conscious decision to move away from the more traditional plastic and brightly coloured classroom materials. When choosing resources we looked for items that are visually appealing as well as offering a tactile experience. Research has shown that there is a strong connection between the emotional centre of the brain and the tactile system so we collected and sourced objects that offer a range of sensory experiences. Furthermore touch encourages exploration of weight, texture, size, temperature and so much more.
We strongly believe in the benefits of offering loose part play. Loose part play allows children to do the thinking. It encourages problem solving, resilience and cooperation; all vital skills for the development of the next generation.
Loose parts form the base of our resources in the Atelier and through the Early Years environment. By loose parts we mean collections of natural and manmade objects. These objects have no pre-determined use. Watching our students combine, take apart, redesign, line- up and create using these open-ended resources has been a real joy. We have seen the same loose part become and be used for a myriad of things. The introduction of a range of loose parts in our learning environment has really increased

Our Mini-Mavericks program is aimed at children between 4-7 years and gives them an introduction to the principles of Martial Arts. We teach basic Kickboxing and fundamental disciplines such as respect along with a few games and talking topics.
The Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is a new program for 2018! Our Adult BJJ has been incredibly popular since introduced and we wanted to give the opportunity to kids between 10-14 years to learn the basic principles of this unique style of Martial Art.

Meet the Head Tracey Fantham, Headteacher of Manor House School, Bookham What do you love about working at Manor House School, Bookham? Working in a school where I know all of the pupils by name from ages 2 – 16 is really wonderful. The environment is a beautiful place to work and the happy and positive atmosphere at Manor House is almost tangible. What changes have you implemented in the past twelve months during your time as Head? Within the last 18 months, I have introduced a new contemporary school uniform that the girls are proud to wear, restructured the school day and curriculum, introduced many new opportunities for sports and holiday activities across the Preparatory and Senior Schools, improved the senior scholarship opportunities after relaunching our website and prospectus to better reflect our seven school values. What is your school’s ideology and how do you prepare pupils for life after education? We aim to offer a well-rounded education and the type of girl who thrives at Manor House is someone who is prepared to work hard to achieve, to take on new challenges, work as a team and fully participate in the life of the school, be that on the sports field, the stage or in the Science Laboratory. Developing ‘future female leaders’ has
6
Primary Times Easter 2018
never been more relevant. All girls are encouraged to take up the challenge of a leadership role during their time here. They may aspire to become a sports captain, a form captain, a science ambassador or a supportive friend to name just a few examples. By the time girls reach the end of Year 11, they are well prepared and ready to move onto a new environment. What makes you most proud of your pupils? Witnessing their achievements, kindness and the way they enthusiastically engage in learning each day. How have recent technological developments affected teaching and education? This aspect of learning is where we have seen huge developments. All our senior girls use iPads for learning and they are available to our Upper Prep pupils. The technology industries are creating some incredible software and apps which bring a different dimension to learning. Girls can develop creativity and collaboration skills both within and outside the classroom without replacing traditional learning methods. www.manorhouseschool.org – Next Open Morning: Tuesday 1 May 2018 at 9.30am. DISCOVER RACING
AT LINGFIELD PARK Discovering the inside story of horse-racing and what it takes to breed a thorough-bred are all on offer at Lingfield Park Resort as the racecourse marks Grand National Day.
Its annual Discover Racing day on April 14th will be a perfect day for all the family to find out what goes on behind-the-scenes at a racecourse. National charity Racing to School, which holds curriculum-based lessons at Lingfield Park and other racecourses around the country, will be on hand with its ex-jockeys to show people the inner-workings of a race day, including a behind-the-scenes tour. They will also have a mechanical horse – an equicizor, used for training by professional jockeys – for people to see just how hard it is to ride a racehorse! Racehorse trainer John Best, will display his Lingfield Park Owners Group racehorse, Mosskateer, in the Winners’ Enclosure before racing and will detail the steps it takes to choose a young horse at the sales in January, to training it and getting it fit

for its racing career. He will be on hand to answer any questions about his horses or his Kent-based yard.
As well as demonstrations by the farrier, the younger visitors will be able to get their faces painted or try their hands at riding skills on the inflatable Derby Hoppers. Executive Director at Lingfield Park Resort, David Toulson-Burke, explained how Discover Racing is one of the most popular days at the racecourse. ‘There is literally something for everyone – from our own thrilling action on the track to being able to watch the Grand National live on our big screen – it’s a day that literally brings the sport to life.’ ‘We hope the families who choose to join us, will go away having had a fun, but informative day and will see how much horseracing offers for every age.’ Mr Toulson-Burke said Discover Racing was a great example of how Lingfield Park Resort was a perfect day out for all the family.
‘As Britain’s busiest racecourse – with over 80 fixtures this year – we are very used to entertaining every generation. While there will be added entertainment on April 14th, we find that children love coming to the races on any day as it’s the horses that they most want to see. ‘We are lucky at Lingfield Park in that we are able to host so many different types of days. Throughout the summer we host a series of Hooves & Grooves events – live tribute bands after the racing on a Saturday evening – and these are enjoyed by the whole family as well.’ ‘We also stage bigger act concerts, with Paloma Faith playing here after evening racing on August 11th. There really is something on the agenda for everyone!’
Gates open at 12:00 on Discover Racing, with the first race at 14:00 and the last at 17:40. The Grand National will be shown live on the big screen at 17:15. n
