DEVELOPING POTENTIAL FOR LIFE St. Andrew’s has excellent on-site facilities including an all weather sports surface, sports pitches, tennis courts, cricket nets and a swimming pool. We are also in the process of an exciting new building development project that has already provided us with new classrooms, a library and changing rooms. A performing arts centre, further new classrooms and a food technology room are nearing completion.
St. Andrew’s School was founded in 1937 and is a respected and thriving co-educational Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep School, set in 11 acres of grounds near Woking town centre. The School seeks to create a nurturing and happy environment in which all pupils are encouraged and enabled to develop their potential to the full. At St. Andrew’s children feel secure and confident and are highly motivated to perform to the best of their ability in all aspects of
school life. Children are prepared for entrance and scholarship exams to a wide range of independent senior schools and there are specialist teaching facilities for all subjects including science, ICT, music and art. The curriculum is broad and the school places great emphasis on music, sport and the arts. In our latest ISI Inspection, (January 2016), we were extremely proud to be rated ‘excellent’ in all areas.
Children can be supervised at school from 8am and, through our extensive after-school activities programme for Year 3 and above, until 6/6.30pm most evenings. An after-school club is also available from 4.15pm to 6pm for PrePrep, Year 3 and Year 4 children. Don’t take our word for it! Come to our next open morning and have a guided tour by one of our senior pupils. See our advertisement for more details or visit our website: www.st-andrews.woking.sch.uk to register your interest. n
‘CLASSROOM ESCAPES’ AT BARROW HILLS SCHOOL
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX!
Imaginations were fired up when children at Barrow Hills School engaged in an immersive learning experience at a special interactive workshop held at the School on 4th March.
within the room. Only when the codes have been successfully cracked and the riddles solved can the children gain access to the box and make their escape from the locked classroom.
Children from Year 5 and Year 6 (Middle Prep) took part in ‘Classroom Escapes’ – an innovative way of learning where players solve a series of puzzles. Designed to encourage problem solving, logical reasoning and team work, the children had to think fast as they raced against the clock to unravel the mystery and break out of their classroom.
Comments from children who took part in the activity included:
Created by ‘School Escape Rooms’, who visited the School to provide the learning experience, Classroom Escapes is based around National Curriculum subjects, such as maths, history and science –which are brought to life through participation in a physical adventure game. At the start of the session the children were shown the ‘escape boxes’ and told how they work. On first sight, they look like an ordinary locked wooden box. Everything needed to solve the puzzle including keys, padlocks, codes and riddles is provided
4
Primary Times Easter 2019
Year 6 Mia “I enjoyed working with people in the school, who I wouldn’t work with usually. My favourite task was the sky crane after the escape box because it was a challenge outside of my comfort zone.” Year 6 Barnaby “I felt as though I improved my hand-eye coordination with the sky crane. In the escape box, it was great to have the opportunity to apply my scientific knowledge in a different setting. We had to demonstrate curiosity because we needed to find different codes from a large selection of clues. We also had to be brave in our teams and have the confidence to explain the connection which would break the codes. It could be frustrating as we didn’t always solve it on the first go, so we had to keep trying.” Josh Andrade, Head of Middle Prep at Barrow Hills, who organised the workshop
said, “This type of learning fits perfectly with the ‘brave, curious and resilient’ traits that we uphold in the Barrow Hills pupil profile. School Escape Rooms provide a unique experience and encourage a fresh way of learning, taking the children out from behind their desks and urging them to follow their imagination and develop creativethought processes. As well as linking to a number of national curriculum subjects, the exercise has been extremely beneficial in helping to develop communication, problem solving and inference skills as well as promoting team building and encouraging perseverance. Great fun was had by all!” n

SOME PARENTS AND TEACHERS ARE GETTING SATS PREP WRONG -
IT SHOULDN’T BE A SOURCE OF STRESS FOR PUPILS When I became Education Secretary, I spent my first weekend in post asking everyone I met what they wanted for their children. Invariably the answer that came back was “I want my child to be happy”. That’s hardly surprising and it’s why I’ve spent a lot of my time as Education Secretary thinking about children’s health and wellbeing. This was behind my decision to make health education – including mental health – universal from 2020. If we get this right, then we are building strong foundations on which every child will have the opportunity to fulfil their potential. When I hear about issues causing children undue stress or anxiety, it concerns me. It’s been clear for some time now that there are some misapprehensions about the purpose of the SATs – or National Curriculum tests to give them their proper name – that children take at the end of primary school. In some cases, children aged as young as 10 or 11 are experiencing ‘exam stress’. I know for some schools and parents the return to the classroom after half-term will bring an increased focus on the tests in May, so it’s important to set things straight about what SATs are for and what effects they have. I’ve heard disturbing stories of children not being allowed out to play by their parents because they are too busy revising; I’ve heard of special exam prep homework, ‘howto’ guides, cramming and tutoring, even some children spending their Christmas holidays looking at old tests. Last year a poll found that up to 30% of schools are asking pupils to revise for SATs at home and one in five are sending them home with previous papers. I’ve also heard about schools feeling the need to put on stressbusting sessions and running special activities to distract pupils from the pressure. None of this is necessary, and it doesn’t happen everywhere. If one in five are sending kids home with previous papers, it is important to note that four in five aren’t. Earlier this year I visited an outstanding primary school. When I spoke to the headteacher about how they prepare children for SATs, she had a message I found inspiring in its simplicity. She said they just tell pupils to do their best, “but then that’s what we always tell them,” she added. I know this is replicated in many thousands of
6
Primary Times Easter 2019
schools all over the country – and I want it to be the norm. It is good for children to want to do their best, to show what they can do, and to think that this does matter. But it is not at all the same thing as feeling undue pressure. Of course, these tests give parents an idea of how well their children are doing in English and maths and, in some cases what additional support they may need at secondary school. But they should never be a cause for upset or anxiety for children or parents. SATs are not public exams – they are tests, and there is a difference. These are not A Levels or GCSEs with results that count on an individual basis in the long term. Their core purpose is to help ensure primary schools are teaching our children the key skills and knowledge in maths and English that they will need to go on to succeed at secondary school. And I don’t want SATs to be a source of stress for teachers either – accountability and the measurement of schools are clearly vital so that we can continue to drive up standards across our schools, but in recent years Key Stage 2 tests have seen to be high stakes. That is why we are reforming and simplifying the accountability system, to make sure that results and data are only ever the starting point for a conversation about school performance. We want parents to be able to see how their school is performing and be confident in this without their children feeling under pressure. Exams and tests have their place in education and they always will. GCSEs and A Levels are an important measure of what pupils have learned in their schooling to that point and it’s right that they are treated seriously – these are the measures that employers, universities and others will take into account. But you won’t be asked how you did in your SATs during a job interview. The truth is that pupils only need to treat SATs in the same way that they treat other work like a spelling or times table test – they just need to do their best. The last thing I want is for 10 and 11-year-olds to be fearful or nervous about taking a test. I want them to do their best in SATs, just as I want them to do their best in every class. n By Damian Hinds This article first appeared in the I newspaper on Wednesday 20 February.

HELPING AN
ANXIOUS CHILD Hannah Lashite, Child Play Specialist at Bupa Cromwell Hospital, gives an insight to helping children and young people with anxiety.
As a parent, it’s hard to watch your child worry over situations that don’t seem frightening to us, but these situations can feel genuinely threatening to them. This apprehension can create a nervous system response, resulting in chemical changes in the body. This is anxiety. Hospital environments in particular can be sources of stress for children. If children are anxious about coming in to have surgery, it’s important to understand the source of the anxiety. A pre-surgery visit to the hospital may help the child become more familiar with the environment. The child might feel unsure about what is going to happen and

overwhelmed with all of the different things they are hearing.
For some children and young people these feelings of anxiety and stress can occur in many aspects of daily life. Here are some techniques that parents may find useful to help them: • Break the task or event down into smaller steps • In the run up to a task or event, talk about what is going to happen • Celebrate any efforts to tackle anxiety • Give a choice where appropriate • Use deep breathing and guided imagery for older children For more information, visit bupacromwellhospital.com/ skyline

Using charming storytelling, simple puppetry and an assortment of quirky characters - including his metallic friend Bolty, paper-loving official Whiskers and a feathery jazz singer called Flossy - this delightful new show offers an age appropriate exploration of the issues facing people who seek safety in a new land.
