MANOR HOUSE SCHOOL AN INDIVIDUAL APPROACH TO ACADEMIC SUCCESS family-style environment where our happy girls flourish in their learning and personal development. Our Form Teachers, all of whom are primary specialists, teach the majority of lessons in our well-resourced classrooms. Gradually, specialist teaching is introduced until, by Year 6, approximately half of all lessons are delivered by subject specialists. French is taught from Early Years but Spanish is introduced in Year 5 and Latin in Year 6. We follow the National Curriculum guidelines for all subjects but, as an independent school, we are not constrained by them. Instead, we use this guidance as a tool to inform our own unique curriculum, to make the learning pertinent and enjoyable for our pupils, with lessons tailored to their needs and interests. The Preparatory School at Manor House in Bookham consists of Reception Class and Years 1-6. We aim to create a safe, secure and stimulating learning environment for the children at our school, providing the structure that pupils need to develop good working habits, engage their interest and stimulate their desire to learn. Our teachers encourage pupils to be happy, confident individuals with the values, skills and knowledge necessary to take on the challenges of life in the Prep School and beyond. Our Reception Class is housed in excellent purpose-built facilities, adjacent to our Nursery School, with large, modern and light classrooms and access to a dedicated allweather playground. Years 1 and 2 are situated in the spacious Garden Block, overlooking the Summer Garden and next to the Orchard Garden with Years 3-6 located in the historic main house. Pupils benefit from having full access to whole-school facilities, including an assembly hall, a sports hall, a swimming pool, extensive playing fields, an outdoor learning area and Forest School (The Dell) and specially designed cookery, music and drama rooms.

Each class has a full-time teacher and access to a qualified teaching assistant. A broad, balanced curriculum allows us to celebrate and value creativity, whilst giving the girls plenty of time to develop at their own pace, with teaching tailored to the needs of each individual.

The School will be celebrating its’ Centenary Year in September 2020 and now offers scholarships at Year 3. Suitable applicants will be in Year 2 in September 2020.

Within the structured school day, girls quickly gain self-confidence and enthusiasm for learning. We work hard to build a caring,

EDUCATING

TODAY’S CHILDREN FOR THE CHALLENGES

OF TOMORROW Founded in 1935, Staines Preparatory School is a happy, welcoming and non-selective school that prides itself on creating a genuine family atmosphere alongside a first rate education.

In December 2019, a full ISI Inspection was held at Staines Prep and we are proud to be rated as “EXCELLENT” in all areas. Young Explorers Pre-School For ages 2 - 5 years old

Our Areas of Learning & Development A cornerstone of our program is our belief in children’s natural creativity. We know children get great pleasure from being involved in the arts, and so we encourage this at every age. Children learn skills and gain immense self-esteem when given diverse opportunities to create. Art is an integral part of our program, and we provide a wide array of materials for creating.

Learning Your child will learn in a safe, warm and accepting environment. Our atmosphere enables children to respect themselves and others. Through diverse creative experiences, we enhance children’s ability to socialize with others, be creative, express themselves and develop. We provide a high quality educational program, one which we are always improving.

Outside Learning Play areas are important for children, giving them a space for pretending, expressing and imagining themselves. Play areas promote thinking, problem solving, and turn taking, and help children learn and develop skills in all domains. Of course, play areas are also important for developing physical dexterity and good health.

PICK UP A STITCH FOR

WOKING’S EASTER BIG KNIT! This Easter, Woking Shopping is bridging the generation gap with FREE knitting workshops that every member of the family can get involved in (no knitting experience required!) to spread some happiness throughout the community.

Over recent weeks, the centre has been working with a number of local care homes, community groups and individuals behind the scenes, where avid knitters have been busy preparing a series of small knitted squares, ready to be transformed into cute little bunnies in the workshops. Star knitter Brenda (pictured) has knitted over 50 squares! The workshops will run between 4th-10th April* in Central Square, Wolsey Place where you’ll have the chance to make a bunny from one of the knitted squares. The bunnies, once complete, will be placed in a window display in the centre, ready to become ‘Buddy Bunnies’. The Buddy Bunnies will be given out to fellow shoppers during Mental Health Awareness Week in May, in partnership with national mental health charity ‘Mind’ and local mental health charity ‘Learning Space’. Each Buddy Bunny will have a positive message attached to them, to brighten up someone’s day and spread positivity throughout the Woking community. You’ll have the chance to contribute to these messages via a campaign starting in April on the @wokingshopping social media channels. If you get involved in any stage of the project - whether you’re a maker of a bunny at the Easter workshops or a recipient during Mental Health Awareness Week, Woking Shopping would love you to share your Buddy Bunny journey with #MyWokingBuddyBunny. It’s a huge project, set to spread joy throughout every generation of the community, through social interaction, spreading positivity and shared stories. n For more details about this and other events, visit www.woking-shopping.co.uk *All events are subject to change or cancellation without notice. Workshop timings to be confirmed.

SUPPORTING YOU ON YOUR

PARENTING JOURNEY

WHY ROLE PLAY IS IMPORTANT

FOR ALL CHILDREN

Would you like to better understand your child and learn what makes them want to cooperate with you, so that you can swap threats of ‘1.2.3, or else’ and power struggles with strategies that connects you and brings you closer to the parent you want to be? Working with Parenting Success will give you the opportunity to find ‘time out’ that is needed for you to reflect, be inspired and become empowered.

No one gets the privilege of attending parenting school or is handed a manual to refer to when family life feels chaotic or challenging. Even the most loving parents occasionally feel powerless when constantly faced with the family default mode of nagging and conflict. Having support from someone on the outside who can help us see clearly when we can’t, can be invaluable.

Whether signing up to one of our monthly workshops in Cobham’s tranquil Medicine Garden or being supported through 1:1 sessions, Parenting Success will share with you the tools and strategies that will empower you to create positive changes to benefit your entire family. n www.louise-brooks.com Find us on Facebook: parentingsuccesscoaching

Are you tired of browsing the internet for solutions to your child’s challenging behaviours?

Every child loves to play make believe, but studies have shown that it’s also vital to normal child development. Through role play children expand their understanding of themselves and others, it helps them develop language skills and discover leadership ability. By encouraging social interaction and problem solving, it also enables children to gain confidence and develop empathy. At just 18 months, children begin to act out what they’ve seen adults do, and throughout early childhood, pretend play helps them make sense of the world and express emotion. As we are increasingly drawn to technology for entertainment, role play provides much needed

opportunity for children to explore their imaginations and develop crucial skills. Little Street play centres encourage children from 1 – 7 years old to investigate, explore and experiment in a little world for big imaginations. High quality, clean and safe, our centres enable parents to engage with their children in play, fostering a sense of connectedness, and many tell us that they enjoy playing at Little Street as much as their child. Our centres also provide an ideal opportunity for childminders to carry out observations, and for home educators, nurseries and schools to incorporate a trip that’s both great fun and linked to the EYFS. n

Gymnastics is such a great sport for kids and here a few reasons we think why: • Helps to develop strength, flexibility and co-ordination • Develops cognitive skills which can help in the classroom • Enhances general fitness • Helps to improve confidence and self-esteem which is so important in young children • Provides social interaction with peers • IT’S FUN!! At Star-Tastic Gymnastics we believe that having fun should form the basis of learning for children especially learning a new sport such as gymnastics and trampolining. Having an extracurricular activity, such as gymnastics, will help children grow into resilient, confident young adults Star-Tastic Gymnastics was established in 2013 by Head Coach Stacey Oliver. Her aim was to bring gymnastics to as many children as possible by offering before

and after school clubs, which are convenient for both the parents and the child. Many schools across Surrey and West Sussex saw the appeal and benefits of these clubs and Star-Tastic Gymnastics are now operating 10 schools. With many schools striving to become Healthy Schools, offering a wide and enriched curriculum is something Stacey and her coaches are passionate about. Head Coach Stacey says “Gymnastics has always been my passion. Coaching children and helping them to achieve their goals is the best job in the world. My aim is to help all my gymnasts achieve their goals, whatever they maybe”.

The club has continued to grow and now has over 40 open classes in both Epsom and Tadworth. With classes in Trampolining, Parkour, Gymnastics, Acro Gymnastics and Display gymnastics there is a discipline to keep every child happy. Stacey also believe it is important to start an active lifestyle from a young age and has launched the Mini Stars Gymnastics classes which are perfect for introducing preschoolers to gymnastics and being active. Saturday 18th April. 1pm-2.30pm. Discover how one remarkable woman changed the face of nursing forever. Today, nurses are recognised as important, super-skilled professionals. News soon reached home of soldiers dying from battle wounds, cold, hungry and feverish, without medical care and with no nurses to treat them. Help was needed fast, Florence led a team of nurses to the Crimea. When they arrived, the nurses found the Army hospital in a terrible state, overcrowded and filthy, with blocked drains, broken toilets and rats running everywhere. Wounded soldiers were sleeping on dirty floors, without blankets to keep warm, clean water to drink or fresh food to eat. Learn how Florence changed everything and saved lives.

THE IRON AGE THE END OF PREHISTORY

Saturday 16th May. 1pm-2.30pm. The Iron Age lasted from 800 BC to the Roman invasion. The population grew substantially till it exceeded one million, due to the introduction of improved varieties of barley and wheat, and increased farming of peas, beans, flax and other crops. Farming improved because the iron-tipped ploughshare made it possible to plough heavy clay soils. Meet some Iron Age folk and discover what it was like to live in a roundhouse. £5 per child.

Friday 1st SAY NO - SUCCESSFULLY (PARENTING WORKSHOP IN COBHAM) The Medicine Garden Downside Road, KT11 3LU. 10am-12:30pm. Parenting Success is once again offering this popular worskhop on the art of saying no. Saying no - and communicating our boundaries is an inescapable part of life with children. Yet, also one of the most difficult aspects of being a parent. In order to keep the peace you may find yourself saying yes when you actually mean no. Or feeling like you have to shout and get angry in order to be heard. The good news is: There is a middle way. A way that allows you to be in charge without compromising the connection between you and your child. Because children do want boundaries and feel safe in the company of parents who

can communicate these clearly and respectfully. Children are possibility seekers and like little scientists they will explore ways around a barrier with relentless perseverance. And that is exactly as it should be! Our job is to decide what is okay and what is not acceptable. Cobham Tickets · £43.71. www.eventbrite.co.uk
