EARLY YEARS CURRICULUM
MUCH MORE THAN PLAY! kindergarten will find it difficult to flourish. In addition, if a child is having problems developing relationships with their peers this will affect their ability to feel secure, which will ultimately impact on their potential to thrive.
When parents first send their child to school, kindergarten or nursery, it is probably fair to say that the majority consider those early years to be primarily focused on socialising the child, establishing routines, some basic learning and of course, plenty of play! However, the reality is that these first steps into the education system are actually formally defined as the Early Years Foundation Stage (which covers children from birth to five - so until the end of Reception) and as such, there is a need to cover a range of subjects and a requirement to meet specific learning goals. So, what exactly should a nursery, kindergarten or school be covering during these formative years? And what makes for a positive learning environment? Sally Livingston, Reception Class Teacher and Early Years Co-Ordinator at Barrow Hills School (Barrow Hills also operates a successful nursery and Kindergarten (Kindy) for children aged twofour years) sheds some light on the matter. What are the key areas of development that are covered as part of the Early Years curriculum and have there been any recent major changes? The recommendations outlined in a government review in April 2012 focused on strengthening partnerships between

parents and professionals and homed in on three key areas that are essential to preparing a child for future learning and healthy development: personal, social and emotional development; communication and language and physical development. What are the key markers to look out for, in a child that is developing normally in a new Early Years learning setting? The priority is to look at the individual child and not just use the age band ‘requirements’ as a tick list. If a child can do everything in the age band description except for one thing, they can still be considered to be working within that age band. At the end of the Reception year, children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals, which represent the desired learning achievements at this point of their education. Some children will exceed these learning goals, but some may not and will reach them in Year 1. What are the signs that a child that is struggling in a new Early Years learning setting? Building a relationship with their key worker or teacher and feeling secure in the Early Years setting is essential. A child that is struggling to build a rapport or who feels worried / anxious in school or
What questions should parents be asking of an Early Years setting? Check if the school or kindergarten offers a free flow learning environment. Can the children choose to learn inside or outside? Providing this freedom to choose is essential for a child’s development. Children learn differently in the freedom of the great outdoors, so for some children, this is the best way for them to access the curriculum, whilst for others the more formal structure of being inside is where they learn best. Children that prefer learning inside still benefit from going outside and experimenting with what they have been taught. Find out how much time is allocated to child-initiated play and guided learning. Ask how a child’s learning journey is recorded. Do they use books/online learning journeys and how often are these shared with parents? Find out what form of communication there is between parents and staff and the frequency of this communication. Request details of any extra curricular opportunities that are available to the children. What other steps should I take to ensure the school or kindergarten is right for my child? Look at the children already at the school and ascertain whether they are happy, confident, engaged in their learning and sufficiently supported to help them become independent learners. I also recommend spending time assessing whether the staff appear content / fulfilled, as in my opinion happy staff in the workplace will always go the extra mile both for the school and the child. n

SURREY SCHOOLS INVITED TO JOIN ‘RECYCLE WITH MICHAEL’ CHALLENGE
Surrey schools are being encouraged to ‘Recycle with Michael’, as part of an initative by The Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted clothing and shoes away from landfill. Local schools that sign up to the scheme will be challenged to fill as many bags as possible before the end of March 2019, for the chance to be crowned Michael’s recycling champions. The winning school – calculated as the one with the highest ratio of bags to pupils - will receive a trophy, certificate and a very special visit from Michael, the scheme’s mascot.
Designed especially for primary school-aged children, the programme is also an important way for schools to generate much-needed funds - a percentage of the bags’ financial value is donated back to the school to spend how they wish. The remaining funds raised will go towards supporting The Salvation Army’s important work to help vulnerable people from all walks of life in communities across the UK. The scheme aims to educate young people about the importance of recycling in a fun and engaging way. The programme is supported by free downloadable school materials such

KINGSWOOD HOUSE SCHOOL
EDUCATING BOYS FROM RECEPTION UP TO GCSE independence and a growing appreciation of teamwork. Furthermore, a Forest School initiative is taught onsite to children in Reception to Year 3 by a trained instructor. The coaching of sport is a real strength at Kingswood House and all boys are involved in competitive fixtures, across the age and ability range, with other schools. There is a strong programme of pupil mentorship, organised via our forward-thinking House Family system, where older boys take on responsibility for helping younger children understand and manifest the values of the Kingswood House Way. We have found that this approach yields outstanding results in terms of well-being and happiness. In Lower Prep, we are ambitious for each boy, in a conducive environment of small classes and gentle support which helps them achieve more than they believe is possible. Kingswood House Lower Prep offers a wonderfully nurturing and stimulating environment from Reception through to Year Four where children quickly grow in confidence. Situated in modern, purpose-built classrooms, our pupils benefit from a broad and engaging curriculum. The school day runs from 8:30am to 3.45pm with an optional after-school club until 5.00pm. Break times are supervised carefully and the boys use the adventure playground, play football or invent their own games!
There are competitive fixtures in major sports against other schools from Year 3 upwards and all boys learn to swim since this is an important life skill. Assemblies take place twice each week and offer a wonderful opportunity for the headmaster to celebrate boys’ achievements with plentiful awards and certificates in front of our school community. We believe firmly in the concept of learning beyond the classroom and all boys enjoy a range of school outings, including a residential trip each year from Year 3, during which time they derive greater

BARFIELD SCHOOL
Situated in 12 acres of beautiful grounds, just outside of Farnham, Barfield School is a coeducational Independent Preparatory School, for children aged 2 – 13. Our central belief is that our children should be happy and positively challenged and that this leads to high achievement. We pride ourselves on finding the right balance between excellent academic teaching, exceptional pastoral care and outstanding outdoor learning and sporting facilities.
8
Primary Times February Half Term 2019
This has been formally recognised by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, which awarded us ‘Excellent’ in all categories. With small class sizes, our teachers know our children extremely well and are motivated to support each child to succeed, not only academically, but also in personal areas of excellence. Our unbroken record for achieving annual scholarships, to chosen senior schools, for Academia, Music, Sport and Art, is testament to this.
Pupils at Barfield make good use of our glorious grounds. Our award-winning Three Peaks Outdoor Pursuits Centre provides our children with unique opportunities to develop essential life skills such as teamwork, collaboration and resilience. Tackling the high ropes, teambuilding courses and multiple adventure activities builds confidence and self-esteem, as well as keeping children physically and mentally fit. It also empowers the pupils; it is here that they also learn to set personal goals and to challenge themselves to more than they ever thought possible. Our Prep children also have the chance to take part in sport every day; training and participating in a huge variety of sports from Football, Netball, Hockey, Cricket, Rounders, Tag Rugby, and Swimming to Triathalons and Aquathons. They all represent the School and their Houses in matches. Indeed, we are delighted to have been named one of the top 50 Prep Schools for Cricket in the 2019 Good Schools Guide, published by The Cricketer magazine. There is no doubt that Barfield has a special magic; a family atmosphere and a caring and friendly community. We would love to welcome you so that you can experience it for yourself. There’s a guaranteed way to turn grouchy little demons into scampering red-cheeked angels. Bundle them up in wellies and waterproofs and get them outside in nature, whatever the weather. It is absolutely worth the effort to coax them away from their screens when you see the layers of angst whisk away with the first dash down a footpath and swish of a stick-sword. A child who has run around in the fresh air at the National Trust’s Polesden Lacey and

CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL
Chichester Cathedral has one of the finest choirs in Britain, with an international reputation for the quality of its performances, and the wonderful musical education offered to the choristers. As well as singing in regular services in the Cathedral, the choirboys broadcast to hundreds of thousands of radio listeners, make recordings, and travel abroad for concert tours. This is in addition to a normal school curriculum that includes academic work, sport, drama and field trips.

Campaign offers Paintball & Laser events for children and adults. Laser from age 6+, Minipaintball for 8-10 year olds and real Paintball 10-16 year olds. They provide everything you need including full kit, clothing, tuition and also lunch can be arranged. Naturally, with safety a top priority, all players are carefully supervised throughout their visit.
The chorister life is about much more than music. The boys are constantly encouraged and developed within a caring and close-knit community, setting goals
and exceptional standards for themselves. They learn important skills for life - concentration, teamwork, organisation and a sense of professionalism. These qualities are highly valued by employers, universities and secondary schools (nearly all the choristers gain scholarships when they leave the choir). The chorister experience really is an unrivalled gateway to a future of opportunity and success. If your son has shown an interest in music, enjoys singing or is just interested in finding out more, why not explore this exceptional opportunity? Chichester choristers typically come from primary schools in the South, and aren’t expected to have any previous experience of music – the Cathedral provides all the training. Informal, friendly auditions and meetings are held all year round. For more information, please visit www.chichestercathedral.org.uk. Photo credit: Ash Mills
