OUTDOOR LEARNING, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND

ENGAGING WITH NATURE:WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?

At Guildford Nursery School children have access to our beautiful indoor and outdoor environments, all day long, all year round. They have long periods of time when they can play both inside and out. Being outside is so important because children need to be physically active. The Department for Health recommend that young children are active for a minimum of three hours each day. Being physically active: • Promotes positive well-being. • Develops the muscles needed for writing. • Stimulates the eye muscles needed to follow text during reading. • Helps children to learn how to play with others and acquire friendship skills. • Improves the function of heart, lungs and blood circulation which in turn means healthier children. • Stimulates children to communicate both non-verbally and verbally, children are far more likely to talk outside than inside. • Gives children the opportunity to understand concepts with their whole bodies. Concepts that they will later understand in a more abstract way, such

as many of the ideas we use in maths, like weight and size. • Brings the brain to just the right state for taking in and processing new experiences. • Creates learning and memory. Being still and sitting still are very complex and advanced skills which young children are not ready for until they are 6 or 7 years old. Being able to keep your body still requires well developed balance and finely controlled muscles. Both of these are gained from moving rather than practising stillness. Children who find it difficult to sit still for developmentally appropriate amounts of time need to move more. Why do children need to get outside and engage with nature? Engaging with nature involves using all the senses to notice details in the natural world. Children use their imagination and creativity to make up games, they are not dependent on toys or screens. There is usually a greater use of language because of this. Engaging with nature offers children open

ended, imaginative and creative play by using what is naturally available to them. Children are more likely to demonstrate higher level learning when engaging with nature in this way. Engaging with nature offers spontaneous learning opportunities and experiences. It cultivates imagination. Children engaging with nature are often still, reflective, observant and co-operative. They learn to be respectful of their environment. Children learn to make use of what is already there. The ideas are all their own. This is both empowering and leads to better mental health. Engaging with nature involves children making their own choices, allowing them freedom with guidance. n Sally Cave, Headteacher Guildford Nursery School

DEVELOPING CHINTHURST POTENTIAL FOR LIFE on music, sport and the arts. In our latest ISI Inspection, (January 2016), we were extremely proud to be rated ‘excellent’ in all areas.

St. Andrew’s School was founded in 1937 and is a respected and thriving co-educational Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep School, set in 11 acres of grounds near Woking town centre. The School seeks to create a nurturing and happy environment in which all pupils are encouraged and enabled to develop their potential to the full. At St. Andrew’s children feel secure and confident and are highly motivated to perform to the best of their ability in all aspects of school life. Children are prepared for entrance and scholarship exams to a wide range of independent senior schools and there are specialist teaching facilities for all subjects including science, ICT, music and art. The curriculum is broad and the school places great emphasis

St. Andrew’s has excellent on-site facilities and we have just completed an exciting new building development project that has provided us with a fantastic new theatre, food technology room, library, changing rooms and classrooms. Our impressive outdoor facilities include an all weather sports surface, sports pitches, tennis courts, cricket nets and a swimming pool. Children can be supervised at school from 8am and, through our extensive after-school activities programme for Year 3 and above, until 6/6.30pm most evenings. An after-school club is also available from 4.15pm to 6pm for Pre-Prep, Year 3 and Year 4 children. Don’t take our word for it! Come to our next open morning and have a guided tour by one of our senior pupils. See our advertisement for more details or visit our website: www.st-andrews.woking.sch.uk to register your interest. n

PREPARATORY SCHOOL Chinthurst is a coeducational day school for children aged 2 to 11 years situated between the villages of Walton on the Hill and Tadworth. Since becoming a junior school of the Reigate Grammar in 2017 it has become one of the fastestgrowing prep schools in the country, undergoing a period of dynamic change. The school was shortlisted for Independent Prep School of the Year in 2019 in recognition of this.

The curriculum – from the arts to technology and beyond – has been transformed with the emphasis now being on personalised learning and individual progress. Academic outcomes are excellent with children progressing to Reigate Grammar, and other highly selective independent

and state schools both locally and further afield. However, it is the emphasis on wellbeing which really sets Chinthurst apart. Headteacher, Cathy Trundle, believes that an allencompassing and thorough wellbeing programme is essential.

‘Children with strong emotional wellbeing have a better ability to cope with pressure and it is vital that schools allow them to develop this in a safe and caring environment. At Chinthurst, the children are encouraged to take risks, try new things and failure is turned into a positive learning experience. This builds confidence and provides a strong foundation from which they can fulfil their potential’. n

REIGATE ST MARY’S

PREPARATORY AND CHOIR SCHOOL Reigate St Mary’s is a coeducational day school for pupils aged 2 to 11. It is a junior school of Reigate Grammar School (RGS) and typically 75 to 80 percent of children transfer to RGS each year.

Academic excellence is achieved through a relentless focus on wellbeing which builds self-esteem, confidence and a sense of belonging. A truly holistic and individual approach enables personalised support both in and out of the classroom. No one is invisible or slips under the radar here. A growth mind-set celebrates hard work and effort not innate talent. In focusing on the journey and in embracing mistakes and failure as part of improving, children build

the resilience and risk taking required to succeed. A rich, broad and stimulating curriculum is delivered by staff recruited for their desire to see children flourish and overcome hurdles. This, alongside excellent staff ratios, ensures that real growth happens.

An emphasis on lifelong learning through a Philosophy for Children programme, develops critical and abstract thinking. Children learn to question, evaluate, decide and articulate. In listening to others, and building on their ideas, academic standards are lifted for everyone and children develop those important soft skills such as communication and teamwork turning them in to learners of the future. n

OUR CHILDREN NEED

SKILLS FOR LIFE –

NOT JUST FOR TESTS! Despite exams and tests hanging over every child’s head, children still need the soft skills – communication, problem solving and interacting with their peers – alongside maths and English, if they are to progress happily within school and into the real world.

This runs between 9am and 10.30am and is attended by local mums (and a few dads!) and their little ones. Head of Nursery, Mrs Dawn Wild says, ‘I love seeing how happy the children are every week. They start to make friends from an early age and also, they start to explore the wide variety of toys and equipment we have available. There is no need to book. Just drop in. All are most welcome’

“Lingfield Littlies has been so much fun to come along to. My daughter has loved the variety of activities on offer and enjoyed exploring the nursery classrooms. There is always something fun and new to do. Coming to Lingfield Littlies has allowed my daughter to become familiar with her future nursery surroundings and the staff” Mother to Lucy, aged 2 “Lingfield Littlies has provided the opportunity for my son to go off independently and play in a safe and exciting environment. It has also been a lovely way for me to meet new parents and chat to teachers. It is evident that a lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes from the displays seen in the classrooms and the activities on offer for the children.” Mother to Daniel, aged 18 months.

A FRESH TAKE ON SWIMMING LESSONS swim properly, for them to be happy as they learn water skills and safety, grow in confidence and enjoy a physical workout.”

FARNHAM - KIDS FOOTBALL CLASSES - S4K STRIKERS (5YRS TO 7YRS) Weydon School, Farnham. In our S4K Strikers (5 to 7 years) we experience a rapid development in skills and maturity of the children as sports players and team members. They get to combine and hone their skills in exciting games and activities that help them to develop their touch, sense of space, movement and their positions on the pitch. They learn to defend, to attack, pass and move. Dribbling skills with the injection of the Dutch Coever methods for emulating football superstars and the moves that have made them great are introduced. The roll backs, back heals and drag backs are all actively encouraged as kids continue the fun games while participating in high skill development sessions. Children are actively encouraged to run with the ball, while also receiving coaching on close passing movements. The team sense of bonding and working together is emphasized at this stage as we emulate the philosophies of the Spanish, Dutch and Brazilian methods. All of our games with S4K Strikers are framed in a way that develops confidence by beginning with zero stress learning – where Strikers are encouraged to learn at their own pace before stress is gradually introduced across a period of four weeks. The games are fun for the Strikers, but teach basic footballing principles such as control of the ball as well as the
