DEVELOPING POTENTIAL FOR LIFE
St. Andrew’s School was founded in 1937 and is a respected and thriving co-educational Prep school, of around 300 children. Set in 11 acres of grounds approximately half a mile from Woking town centre, the school seeks to create a nurturing and happy environment of trust and support in which all pupils are encouraged and enabled to develop their skills, talents, interests and potential to the full - intellectually, physically and spiritually. At St. Andrew’s children feel secure and confident and are highly motivated to perform to the best of their ability in all aspects of school life. They are competitive without losing sight of their responsibility to share and they are justifiably proud of their school and their own personal achievements. We also place great emphasis on consideration for others and aim to teach children about patience, empathy and unselfishness, whilst encouraging them to use their time wisely in an independent and self-reliant manner.

St. Andrew’s School prides itself in providing a broad based curriculum that focuses on enabling our children to enjoy a full range of subjects. Educating the whole child is central to our ethos and, whilst academic standards are high, there are also real opportunities to develop their skills in art, music and sport together with a fantastic programme of after school activities. In our latest ISI inspection report (January 2016), the school was rated ‘excellent’ in all areas, and with the benefit of individual attention and specialist teachers in all areas of the curriculum, the children are able to reach their full potential in a happy, caring and supportive environment. When it is time to move on to senior schools at the end of Year 8, the children are prepared for entrance and scholarship exams to a wide range of independent senior schools and the school provides guidance and advice to parents on the senior school choices that best suit each individual child.
St. Andrew’s is very proud of its excellent on-site facilities including sports pitches, an all weather pitch, tennis courts, cricket nets and swimming pool. We are very fortunate to enjoy the benefits of carefully designed school grounds that meet the needs of the children’s physical and social development. This includes an exciting new development project that will provide us with a performing arts centre, new classrooms, changing rooms and food technology room. Children are assessed for entry into Year 2 and above. Don’t just take our word for it! Come and visit the school to see for yourself at our next open morning on Saturday 3rd November, 10am – 12 noon and take a guided tour by one of our senior pupils. We look forward to welcoming you. n

IS IT YOUR TIME TO TRAIN TO TEACH? We believe that the best place for trainee teachers to learn how to become excellent classroom practitioners is in schools. As a provider of initial teacher training, we provide a one-year programme for high quality graduates to train. Our trainees spend the majority of their time in a school environment, whilst receiving high quality support and training. Learning in this way means that trainees feel part of the school community. It allows schools to grow their own and offers successful trainees a longterm career pathway that goes well beyond initial teacher training. Working with an alliance of highly successful primary and secondary schools and other professionals, we have staff development with outstanding learning and teaching at the core of everything we do. GLF Schools’ Teacher Training is an alliance of highly successful schools in Surrey and beyond, with a very strong history of providing exceptional ITT since 2013.
Trainees will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment and will develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging teaching and learning in primary and secondary schools.
‘Becoming a teacher is a privilege. You contribute to the shaping and development of children and young people as they grow up. Whilst it has its demands, it is never too late to become a teacher. We are delighted to offer a wide range of options available to those looking to enter the teaching profession and we continue to ensure that we provide the most comprehensive support package in place for all of our trainees’. n Jon Chaloner CEO, GLF Schools
‘Having almost completed my training, I can now say that teacher training has, without doubt, been the best career decision I’ve made! Teaching provides me with a sense of fulfilment that I never had in 20 years of marketing.’ David – Geography
‘I’ve learnt a lot about myself this year and have had my mind opened to a completely new world. With the support of my mentor, the SCITT team and fellow trainees, I feel proud of what I’ve achieved and I’m ready for my NQT year in September!’ Deirdre – Physics ‘Training with GLF Schools’ SCITT has been an incredible journey. The Professional Studies sessions have all been of a very high standard, enabling me to progress as a practitioner over the course of the year.’ Matt – Geography

CLEAR THE AIR Walking, cycling or scooting to school is great for you and your child’s health and wellbeing. It reduces their exposure to exhaust fumes and improves air quality. Road traffic is the main source of air pollution in Surrey. This pollution can affect children’s lung-growth, increase symptoms in those with asthma and contribute to chronic illnesses later in life – nothing we’d want them to be burdened with. And surprisingly, you may not protected from air pollution when travelling in a car. This is because you’re in a confined space collecting pollution from vehicles around you. So it’s really worth considering how else you could get to school each day and leave the car at home if you can. But if driving is the only way you can get the children to school
on time, there are a few small changes you could make to help improve the air children breathe. It may be easier than you think. Park a little further away and walk the rest – areas further away from the school may be quieter so it could be easier and quicker to find a parking space. Turn the engine off while you wait – you’ll reduce how much fuel you use so may save money too. Changing how you travel to school, even if it’s just a few times a week, will help children breathe cleaner air. To find out more about how you can fill your children’s heads with fresh ideas and not exhaust fumes, visit www.healthysurrey.org.uk/ airquality Surrey County Council is working with the Surrey Air Alliance, a partnership with district and boroughs to address local air quality issues. n
