SCHOOL MEALS MISSION APPEALS

TO GET PEAS ON PUPIL’S PLATES

The Yes Peas! campaign calls on schools to put peas on the dinner menu during Great British Pea Week The Yes Peas! campaign and the UK pea vining industry have launched a school meals mission and are appealing for schools up and down the UK to put peas on pupil’s plates during Great British Pea Week (10 – 16th July 2017).

Run by the Yes Peas! campaign, Great British Pea Week aims to recognise the 700 British pea farmers who work tirelessly all year round to produce two billion portions of peas to feed the nation. The UK is the largest producer and consumer of frozen peas in Europe, with the average person in Britain eating nearly 9,000 peas per year. The School Meals Mission aims to highlight the importance of healthy school meals and the extraordinary nutritional power of the nation’s favourite family vegetable. One 85 gram serving of peas, cooked, provides 50 calories, 4 grams of protein, 8 grams of carbohydrate (of which 3.5 grams are sugars), 3.8 grams of fibre, 17mg of vitamin C (28% of the recommended daily allowance) and 0.2mg Thiamine

(B1) (15% of the recommended daily allowance).

Schools are being urged to pledge their support via social media and share images of their reci-peas during #GreatBritishPeaWeek. Schools nationwide will each receive a recipe e-book, full to the brim with healthy meal ideas, to inspire them to put peas back on pupil’s plates. Yes Peas! is also calling on families themselves to engage with the campaign by sending in their own pea-tastic creations! TV chef and Yes Peas! ambassador, Rachel Green, said: “Great British Pea Week is a great celebration of British pea farming. It’s truly amazing how our 700 farmers produce over two billion portions a year! It is certainly something to celebrate and commemorate.” Pledge to support Great British Pea Week at https://www.thunderclap. it/projects/58304-great-british-peaweek-2017?locale=en and share your images and activity between 10 – 16th July by posting to @YesPeas on Twitter or www.facebook. com/yespeas using the hashtag #GreatBritishPeaWeek or emailing yespeas@hatchpr.co.uk. n

The RHS Campaign for School Gardening is designed to support schools and provide children with gardening opportunities. Every school that registers (for free) to become a member of the RHS Campaign for School Gardening receives a free welcome pack, certificates, downloadable resources, the opportunity to take part in school gardening training courses and competitions and support as the school progresses. So far over 32,000 schools, youth groups and educators from across the UK have signed up to take part in this fantastic initiative and the RHS received hundreds of entries, nominated

by teachers, for their Young School Gardener of the Year 2017 competition – each entry received a certificate and a £5 gardening voucher. From the hundreds the RHS managed to whittle the nominations down to the final 16, 4 nominees from each of the 4 age groups were selected and each finalist was sent a digital camera to make a short film demonstrating why they are an exemplary gardener.

Amongst the Key Stage 2 nominees was Tyler Boorer (11) from Tadworth – although not winning it was a major achievement to make the final 4. Well done Tyler from all the Primary Times In Surrey team. n

Summer plays at Hatchlands Park For a real summer’s evening treat, why not pack a picnic and come along to the open-air theatre on the lawn at Hatchlands Park, near Guildford. Families will love Dogs Don’t Do Ballet on Thursday 3rd August. Biff is not like other dogs. He doesn’t do dog stuff like weeing on lampposts, or scratching his fleas, or drinking out of the toilet. No, Biff likes moonlight and music and walking on his tiptoes. Based on the bestselling children’s book by Anna Kemp and Sara Ogilvie, this fabulous feel-good show features music, songs and hand-crafted puppets and is brought to the stage by the acclaimed Blunderbus Theatre.

On Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th August, join boat-loving Ratty, the sensible

yet curious Mole, wise old Badger and the fantastically irrepressible Toad as they embark on the adventure of a lifetime in Immersion Theatre’s fun adaptation of Wind in the Willows. Eyecatching costumes, toetapping music and larger than life characters promise to capture the imagination of the youngest of audience members whilst the sheer nostalgic charm of this beloved story is guaranteed to take older generations on a glorious trip down the riverbank onto memory lane. stagecoach theatre arts epsom

Stagecoach Theatre Arts Epsom has gone from strength to strength since being taken over by principal Rachel Crouch in July 2014. Stagecoach Epsom is one of the largest and most successful schools in Epsom, Ewell and Banstead. Stagecoach Epsom now trains over 500 students from 4-18 years in their weekly classes. Principal Rachel is extremely passionate about the stagecoach ethos of “Creative Courage for life” and says she is often told by parents about how stagecoach has had such a positive effect on their child’s behaviour at home and at school. They have seen more focus and

success academically and most importantly a huge difference in their self esteem. Stagecoach provides a safe environment for children to be creative and be themselves. Rachel believes that children are under so much pressure in every other aspect of their lives and that stagecoach provides a break from such stress. Alongside their outstanding weekly training Stagecoach Epsom is also proud to have children who appear regularly in west ends shows, TV and major movies and we often have casting directors visiting the schools.

Stagecoach Epsom provides fully costumed and produced shows at local theatres twice a year, Disneyland Paris and West End troupes plus our popular holiday workshops, private singing and Lamda. However you don’t have to be a born star to attend our schools. We just ask for enthusiasm and we will do the rest! With an exciting year ahead to celebrate 30 years of Stagecoach what better time to join us!! To be part of our schools in September please apply on line at www.stagecoach. co.uk/epsom or call Rachel for a chat on 01372 730363. n
