WHY CHOOSE A SCHOOL NURSERY? BY MRS RACHEL E HARRIS, HEAD OF PRE-PREP AT BARROW HILLS SCHOOL open spaces, woodland, playgrounds, sports fields, Astro, covered play areas… maybe even a swimming pool! Inside, nursery children will be able to use the school dining hall and practice eating yummy meals together with their friends, teachers and older children. Going out to the beach or visiting a farm? No problem – simply jump on the school minibus.

Looking for a nursery can be quite overwhelming at first, especially when there is so much choice from privately-run day nurseries, local authority nurseries and community nurseries. Some nurseries provide childcare year-round, some are open term time only, and many offer wraparound care options.

are warmly welcomed into the wider school community from the very moment they pass through the school gates.

Nurseries set within schools are now gaining in popularity, with children generally joining from their second birthday. Let’s explore why this is and what the benefits are for children at nurseries within a school setting, as opposed to a standalone nursery.

At prep schools, children will often join as two year-olds into the nursery class but that’s not all. They will also be joining ‘Pre-Prep’, the section of a prep school which extends up to age 7. They will start to join in with school activities such as raising money for charities alongside their elder peers in Reception and the rest of the children. Mums and dads can join parents’ associations and children will be immensely proud of their very first school uniform!

A SENSE OF BELONGING Children at school nurseries thrive socially, cognitively, emotionally and physically. They

How does learning to sing a song in French sound? Mastering the castanet with your nursery friends in the music room? Building a bug hotel in Forest School or learning how to plié in the ballet studio? RECEPTION ON THE HORIZON All nursery age children – no matter which nursery you choose - will grow in independence, learning to put on their own coats and shoes, and learning how to use the toilet, whilst supported by caring staff. But at a school nursery, they will develop a close link with those children already the Reception class, looking up to them as role models. When the time comes for children to move into Reception themselves, they will already know their Reception teacher and Nursery staff will still be around for questions and support, making for a seamless transition. n

DOUBLE GREEN FLAG VICTORY FOR KNOWLE GREEN DAY NURSERY for insect observations and growing vegetables in the garden, there are exciting learning opportunities at every turn at Knowle Green.

After receiving a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award in 2019 as part of the international Eco-Schools scheme, children and practitioners from Knowle Green Day Nursery in Staines were delighted to learn they had gained the sought-after accreditation for a second time.

Childbase Partnership Health, Safety & Environment Director, Mark Bird said; “Holding two Green Flags is a notably rare achievement amongst the broader Eco-School Community and speaks to the diligence at those settings with regards to environmental education but also our broader leadership credentials in this field”.

The top accolade in the programme has been presented to the day nursery on Yeovil Road once more, following continued exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices involving children of all ages.

Knowle Green Manager, Vicky Chinnapen explained; “We are thrilled to have another eco-credential under our belt. Respecting and protecting the environment is a key part of our commitment to give our children the best possible future and we are delighted they understand why this is so important.”

FREE TREE PACKS SCHEME NOW OPEN

FOR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES

Whether planting for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, to help tackle climate change, or to improve local areas around the country, the Woodland Trust’s popular free tree pack scheme is now open for applications. Schools and community groups across the South East are now able to apply for the first 1 million trees, and into 2022 there are over 3 million trees in total available via free tree packs. Packs are sent out twice a year with November packs now available for order. In Spring the uptake was high across the South East with 70,395 trees despatched for planting.

The Woodland Trust is delighted to be a leading delivery partner of The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) and is offering free trees as an amazing opportunity to help many thousands of schools and communities to plant trees to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Applications are accepted on a first come, first served basis and the first million trees will be despatched in November during the planting season. The Trust welcomes applications from all types of community groups and people do not have to be part of a formal long-standing group, they just need to have a group name decided before they apply. The packs, all generously funded by our corporate partners, are available in a range of themes; yearlong colour, a wild harvest, or a haven for wildlife. Another contains hardy species which tolerate exposed sites and dry areas or where water collects easily, there is even a working wood mix which could provide wood fuel or willow for weaving.

8

Primary Times Summer 2021

The packs also come in a range of sizes; 15 (perfect for urban areas and which can be split between neighbours where necessary), 30 (which will create a six-metre hedgerow or a tennis court-sized copse), 105 (enough to cover an area as big as four tennis courts) or 420 (to cover an area the size of a football pitch) and most can create fantastic hedgerows.

We ask that trees are planted on publicly accessible land where possible, with the landowner’s permission, and that groups commit to caring for those trees as they establish and grow. Since 2004 the scheme has helped thousands of groups plant millions of trees and there is support for experienced and first- time tree planters! In Spring this year over 400,000 free trees were sent to keen planters across the country. Woodland Trust tree packs are generously funded by lead partners Sainsbury’s, Lloyds Bank, OVO Energy, DFS Furniture, players of People’s Postcode Lottery, Joules, Bank of Scotland and Sofology. Packs contain a mix of UK sourced and grown native broadleaf species such as hazel, rowan, hawthorn, common oak, silver birch, wild cherry, elder, dogwood and holly. To order free trees people can visit www. woodlandtrust.org.uk/freetrees before August 25 and they’ll be delivered in November 2021. All our trees are UK and Ireland Sourced-and-Grown (UKISG). Responsible tree procurement is central to developing resilient woodlands. We currently ship to England, Scotland, Wales and all UK islands apart from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

to spot lake birds, butterflies, dragonflies and other amazing wildlife. Around the lake there are meadows rich in wildflowers over the summer to run around in and really get back to nature.
