BATTLE OF LEDBURY Ledbury Rugby Club - Ledbury RFC, Ross Road, Ledbury, HR8 2LP. Witness the spectacle of the Sealed Knot’s Battle of Ledbury. The date is 22nd April, 1645. The Parliamentary commander Sir Edward Massey, had not been in Ledbury even 24 hours with his combined force of 1500 infantry and cavalry, before battle was joined. The royalists under the command of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, had turned on the march to confront the enemy after receiving news that Parliamentary forces had occupied Ledbury intent on fortifying the quaint village, and using it a base for sorties deeper into Herefordshire. After a viscous skirmish throughout the village, the scars of which can still be seen, the Parliamentarians minus the dead and 200 prisoners fled back to the safety of Gloucester. Sir George Lisle’s Regiment of Foote and other members of the Sealed Knot will provide a Living History Camp, displays and battle with; cavalry, canons, pike and musket at Ledbury Rugby Club to give an idea of what it might have been like on that fateful day. The armies will parade through the town on the Sunday at approximately 11.45am. Free event.

Sunday 14th

THE GREAT LEDBURY CELEBRATION 2019 St Katherine’s Car Park, Ledbury HR8 1EA. This year’s event brings an outdoor market to historic St Katherine’s, Ledbury next to the 15th century Master’s House. A wide range of local produce will be on sale either to eat and drink “on the go” or to take home to savour in slower time, including local cider. A number of our local Great Taste award winners will be pleased to meet you. Our Ledbury Fringe colleagues are bringing a programme of local musicians to the show to entertain you as you eat and drink, and our Ledbury Poetry Festival has promised special poetic performances. You can tour our ancient Master’s House and visit Ledbury’s other heritage sites, or book in for a session of poetry with Ledbury Poetry Festival on the last day of their festival. And…the Civil War re-enactment society The Sealed Knot armies will parade through historic Ledbury at midday as part of their “Battle of Ledbury 1645” weekend. 11am to 5pm with entertainment from midday. www.ledburyfoodgroup.org

WHAT’S ON IN YOUR AREA? From Theatre shows and attractions to classes and family days out you’ll find even more at: www.primarytimes.co.uk

DO YOU WANT TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT AND SAVE MONEY?

Food waste, when sent to landfill, contributes to the release of methane into the atmosphere as it rots down. And with the average family throwing away over £810 worth of perfectly edible food every year, saving even a small percentage of this food from being thrown in the bin will help the environment and the pocket. Worcestershire County Council is a supporter of the Love Food Hate Waste campaign which encourages residents to cut their food waste by being savvier around shopping, storing and cooking. The key messages are:

BUY WHAT YOU NEED

• Take a “shelfie” before you go shopping so you only buy what you really need. • Don’t fall foul of the BOGOF. “Do you really need it?” If the answer is “no” don’t buy it. • Plan your meals to ensure you only buy the ingredients you need for the week.

STORE IT PROPERLY

• Most fridges are set to the wrong temperature so food goes off more quickly. The correct temperature to store food is 5°. • Food can be frozen right up to the Use By date and will stop the process of going off. • There is a lot of confusion around dates, which often means people throw food away which doesn’t need to be. “Best Before” – relates to quality so food will be good enough to eat after this date. “Use By” – relates to safety. The general advice is not to eat meat, fish or diary after the Use By date, but common sense will tell you if something can be eaten.

EAT WHAT YOU BUY

• Some people love rooting through the fridge and throwing lots of items into a pan to create a new dish. Others need a bit of help; the Love Food Hate Waste website (www.lovefoodhatewaste.com) has lots of recipes using all sorts of items that would otherwise go into the bin. • Check out their “Compleat” campaign which shows you how to use up your crusts, potato peelings and veg stalks in lots of yummy dishes. • Christmas and Easter are times when people buy and cook far too much food, so look at the Portion Planner on the Love Food Hate Waste website to work out how much to buy and cook for your celebratory meals to avoid too much waste.
