Primary Independent
School Choices: the
case for co-education One consideration for many parents investigating the option of independent education, is whether to choose single sex or a co-educational environment for their children.
It is in the formative Prep school years that I believe this really important decision should be made as our children’s understanding of social rules are formulated and this very much includes the building of an understanding about the similarities and differences between boys and girls. I often witness in the early years of our children’s education, boys and girls playing together happily and oblivious to their gender. This is incredibly healthy and sets the tone for later years. Our boys and girls in the senior part of the school have known each other for years, are comfortable and not fazed by each other’s presence. They fundamentally understand that they are part of each other’s lives and thus
they gain a broad appreciation of the other’s frame of reference.
Do boys hold back the progress of girls in the classroom? Categorically not! In fact it is our experience that girls bond extremely well and are supportive of each other in all their endeavours, thus enhancing their results. The presence of boys and girls in a class is ultimately a ‘civilising’ factor for both. It creates an environment where the social issues often encountered in girl only classes are minimised. For boys it provides a sense of purpose to their studies and encourages by comparison a strong calming work ethic. Ultimately such an environment is ‘real’! It provides a bedrock for the future and reflects the world beyond our doors. In my opinion there can be no more important aspect to our children’s education. n Mr Adrian Perks, Headmaster, St. Andrew’s School, Woking.

Edgeborough
Preparatory School Edgeborough is riding a wave of excitement after our first half term under the leadership and guidance of new Headmaster Mr Dan Thornburn.
Joining the school in September from St Petroc’s in Bude, where he was Headmaster for three years, Mr Thornburn has brought with him a wealth of experience and a unique balance of skills, including academic strength, sporting pedigree and a strong ability to communicate and inspire. As a school we have seen all of these traits displayed in the short amount of time he and his family have been here, including a continuation of the school’s development, progression and forwardthinking. This vibrant start has ensured we continue being one of the leading schools in the area.
skills, interests and an aspiration within our pupils to do anything and everything to the best of their ability. A strong and enthusiastic team of experienced specialist teachers enrich the curriculum, while small class sizes ensure that each child’s progress is recognised and encouraged. With a strong emphasis on thinking and questioning skills, pupils are taught how to learn independently and as part of a team.
Edgeborough offers a carefully balanced, all-round education which aims to develop
When our pupils come to leave the school in Year 8 we ensure they are as
well prepared as they can be for the exciting challenges they will face at one of the many excellent day and boarding senior schools available both locally and nationally. The previous academic year saw our pupils offered 11 scholarships to prestigious senior schools, recognising excellence in academic ability, sport, music and all-round talent. This builds on similar success we have seen in previous years as Edgeborough pupils have been offered over 90 scholarships in the last eight years. We would be delighted to welcome you to our school and to arrange a visit of our wonderful grounds. Alternatively, you can book a place at one of our 2018 Open Mornings where you will have the opportunity to tour the school, meet the Headmaster, and chat to staff and pupils. A Leading IAPS Co-educational Nursery, Pre-Preparatory & Preparatory School Hoe Bridge School is set in a perfect location just on the outskirts of Woking surrounded by 22 acres of beautiful grounds and is only 25 minutes from central London.
The ethos of high expectations, individual determination, enthusiasm, respect, warmth and care lead to happy, confident and successful children. The community of parents, children, staff and governors thrive on the mutual respect and support embodied in the ethos. The wide and varied opportunities across the disciplines - academic, sporting and creative - allow all pupils to be challenged and to develop to the very best of their ability; success in one area often leads to greater confidence and further successes across the curriculum. Expectations are high and pupils’ achievements are measured against these expectations but equally importantly against their own individual potential. Individual efforts are rewarded and recognised, no matter what the level or the subject and as a community everyone celebrate these successes. At every stage pupils are well prepared enabling them to move on happily and successfully ultimately leading to a place at the best and most appropriate senior school for them. Throughout the years, inspiration, care and leadership come from both staff and children alike and ensure the community is vibrant and dynamic. At the heart of Hoe Bridge stands the stunning 17th century mansion, Hoe Place. Around this mansion, the School has undertaken several major building projects to further enhance the facilities on offer. Recently, the PrePrep department has been completely rebuilt to create a fantastic space which is full of light for the younger children and the Nursery offers busy parents multiple session options up to five full days. The Creative Arts Centre in the Prep Department has taken the oldest part of the school and turned it in to a superb facility for the pupils to express themselves through various media and music and two modern IT suits complete this building. Further projects in the Prep
8

department will also create more space for the older girls and boys.
In the Pre-Prep department, the creative curriculum enables children from Nursery to Year 2 to learn through play, adventure, discovery and experience. Whether they join in Nursery or Reception staff ensure that every child has a very happy start to their school life. The children are busy from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave at the end of the day, and even beyond that if they go into the many after school clubs available. The qualified and dedicated staff work hard to create the fun, warm and vibrant atmosphere that visitors feel the minute they walk through the door. The aim is that each child will achieve his or her full potential; academically, socially, artistically or in sport; through a wellstructured and stimulating programme of work. The transition to the Prep Department is seamless and as children mature they become increasingly independent learners in preparation for the move to some of the country’s leading senior schools. The Prep Department is a vibrant and happy place where the intentions are to prepare confident and independent pupils when they leave. The process of developing the children is carefully and progressively managed and individuals are well supported through this journey. It is during this journey that pupils realise their academic, social, creative and sporting potential - expectation is both high and driven, which ensures that each child achieves their best. In lessons, pupils are pushed hard and inspired by dedicated staff. Lessons are rigorous and interactive and achievement is excellent. The school was last inspected by Independent Schools Inspectorate in October 2014. It achieved a grade of ‘excellent’ which is something that both the girls & boys, staff and parents are extremely proud of. Alongside the academics sport, music, art and drama play a major part
throughout the school and the girls and boys excel in many areas; end of year productions; sporting excellence achieving both national and county success in netball, hockey, cricket and football; individual musical success in national youth orchestras and choirs. Scholarships in all these areas are won every year to a variety of senior schools across the country. Senior pupils in Years 7 and 8 take part in regular extra-curricular activities and it is at this stage of their time at Hoe Bridge that they take on extra responsibility becoming prefects and role models to the younger children. This period is an exciting time for both the boys and girls as they mature and ready themselves for the future in a safe and nurturing setting. The atmosphere of every school is unique and the strength and attraction of Hoe Bridge lies in the atmosphere generated by the staff and pupils. Standards and targets are realistic, though set as high as possible, the bright are challenged and the less able supported; the staff endeavour to instil confidence in all the children and visitors are amazed to see just how happy the children are, how determined they are to succeed and how much they care about each other. “A busy and fun action packed adventure” is one way life at Hoe Bridge has been described.... what a great and accurate description! Life at Hoe Bridge is a fantastic experience every day from Nursery right the way through to Year 8 and the children thoroughly enjoy their time at school and embrace everything that is on offer. There is never a dull moment or time to be bored and the children are proud to call Hoe Bridge their school. The School has an extremely good reputation not just in the local area but county wide as well. There is a real energy throughout to preserve the family atmosphere, to constantly strive to improve results and explore all the possibilities available to enrich both the School and the lives of the children. n

LOVE TO DANCE!!
At Ashtead Ballet School we aim to instil a love of dancing in everyone we welcome through our doors! From tiny tots taking their first dance steps to seniors working en pointe, we pride ourselves on delivering high quality teaching as we believe all children, regardless of ability, have dance potential. Our classes, in RAD ballet and ISTD Tap & Modern, are held at various
locations throughout Ashtead. We take children from 3 years upwards and offer the opportunity to progress through the grade system, with exams for those who want to take them. We also put on a biennial allschool show, fully costumed and with original choreography, which offers great stage experience for all ages and develops students’ confidence.
Since our foundation in 2009 the school has expanded considerably - why not come along and give us a try? The first class is free - great exercise, posture and most importantly fun!
Contact Maxine on 01372 272177 for a chat about what Ashtead Ballet School can offer your child. n

Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”. The first half of the show is a blend of Victorian carols and midwinter folk songs which paint a vivid and colourful picture of the festive season in Dickens’ time.
