EDUCATION ALL THE NEWS FROM YOUR LOCAL SCHOOLS
The Wonder of Heuri H
euristic (adjective): “enabling a person to discover or learn something for themselves” Would your child rather play with the box the toy came in than the new toy? Do they like to explore your keys, necklace, zip or any other everyday item they can get their hands on? If the answer is yes, then your child is engaging in heuristic play and the good news is, it’s great for their development! The term “heuristic play” is about curiosity and exploration and describes the interaction of babies and children with everyday objects rather than toys. As children select, manipulate, explore and compare everyday items, they 4 CHRISTMAS 2021
discover what the object can and can’t do, rather than being constrained to follow the prescribed function of a toy. Children are naturally curious and innovative and heuristic play offers them opportunities to explore and develop in a completely natural way. Heuristic play has many benefits for children’s learning and development. Heuristic play stimulates creativity and imagination, multiple senses and critical thinking. It supports gross motor skills and brain development as well as early mathematical conceptual learning and independence. Nursery Manager Emma Gill at Shooting Stars in Barbourne, Worcester says: “We are always looking at ways we can
improve the nursery and make the environment more inspiring for the children, which is why we promote heuristic play opportunities within our setting. We are continuously expanding our assorted collection of treasures, with the aim of aiding and stimulating play and providing a multisensory experience leading to deep and meaningful play. With robust risk assessments and supervision, heuristic resources provide endless opportunities for learning.” Helen Dean, Nursery Manager ay Shooting Stars Bromsgrove says: “Natural and authentic resources adapt well from babies up to Pre-school, as the children find new ways to explore, combine and
manipulate the objects as they develop and grow. Our staff team enjoy using their creativity to gather themed collections too, to deepen the children’s current interests, or to extend exploration of the seasons or cultural celebrations.” Early Years Specialist Deborah Udakis, who recently provided bespoke consultancy and training workshops across all 7 of the Shooting Stars settings, appreciates the true value of heuristic play in an age where technology and toys dominate: “Today, children are surrounded by loud, colourful toys, and while these might be good at stimulating some of the senses, they tend to lack the sensory and heuristic properties critical for supporting creative thinking

istic Play and problem-solving skills.” She continues, “The mantra that “toys that do less, actually do more” is very relevant to heuristic play. It means that basic, everyday objects that we consider boring (or not toys) actually offer a world of possibilities for our children to learn.” The staff team at Shooting Stars Nurseries offer a combination of heuristic opportunities and outdoor exploration alongside active play, singing and dancing, role play, mark making, playing socially, discovering technology and relaxation with a book to give your child a great balance and a rounded learning experience as they grow and develop.
Shooting Stars Nurseries Area Manager Tracy Hedges, has some guidance for parents/ carers wishing to promote heuristic play at home. “The ‘treasure chest’ method is a simple way for parents/carers to provide more opportunities for open-ended discovery at home, without the hefty price tag of modern toys and technology. Simply fill a box or basket with an eclectic mix of ‘everyday’ objects from around the house or charity shops, in a mixture of different sizes, shapes, weights and textures. An egg box, a measuring spoon, a shower puff, a shaving brush, a sieve, curtain rings, a loofah, feathers, a pinecone or a shell... anything goes! Clear a space and offer the ‘treasure chest’ to your child to select,
primarytimes.co.uk/hereford_worcester
discover and explore objects for themselves. It is important that you supervise and keep a watchful eye (we all know young children love to explore with their mouths!) but don’t use verbal prompts, encourage or distract, so that your child can benefit from the freedom to explore on their own at their own pace. Once they’re satisfied, encourage them to replace all the items and remove the treasure chest ready to be used another time.” As well as the ‘treasure chest’ method, Tracy also suggests wrapping up warm and taking your child outdoors to explore natural objects in the environment all year round. And if Santa Claus wants to do
something a little different this year, “The festive period is the perfect time to start creating a collection of heuristic objects for your child and give them a gift to truly ignite their curiosity this Christmas.” To arrange a tour of Shooting Stars Nurseries at 34 Stourbridge Rd, Bromsgrove or 15 Barbourne Terrace, Worcester, visit www.myshootingstars.com Visit the Deborah Udakis Consultancy website at www.deborahudakis.co.uk

How a Scholarship Can Transform a Child’s Future
– including The Downs Malvern’s “sister school” Malvern College, with which it shares many resources. “Our philosophy is that every child is a unique individual with gifts and talents that will enrich their lives and those of others,” says Headmaster Alastair Cook, “and we can help those gifts blossom whenever they join us. The children here also benefit from leadership opportunities – building on their confidence and people skills.
A
ge 11 is a key time in every child’s education as it usually marks the transition to senior school. For many children, it’s a massive leap: will the new, often much larger school nurture their talents, in whatever direction they lie… or will they feel anonymous? For parents who feel their child would blossom in an environment with smaller

Britain’s Christmas Singalong It’s a new Christmas tradition! Shrewsbury, where Doorstep Carols originated, with Carols in the Square hosted by BBC Radio Shropshire, linking with doorsteps and other hub events across the country.
In Birmingham, Ex Cathedra will be leading singing from the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, linking up with Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospitals and Ladywood community singing group is also joining in and there are plans for a giant singalong in Civic Square. Hoo Farm in Telford will even have its reindeers join in!
D
oorstep Carols is back this year – and with an ever-growing list of mega organisations jumping on board, it looks set to be Britain’s biggest ever carols singalong. Carols on the doorstep brought people together in the midst of the pandemic last year. Broadcast on over 30 local radio stations, it led to wonderful scenes of families singing on doorsteps, sharing mulled wine over the fence with neighbours and children playing instruments in front gardens. An estimated 125,000 people took part, raising over £10,000 for MIND UK and local charities, with collections at street level. This year, Doorstep Carols 2021 is a supercharged nationwide event,

taking all of the street magic of last year across the country whilst also reaching out to those who are isolated. Around 25 local BBC radio stations and BBC Sounds will again broadcast the pre-recorded backing tracks to well-known carols and Christmas songs so that the nation can sing in unison. Streets taking part are encouraged to use the opportunity to raise money for a charity of their choice. A host of national organisations and celebrities are jumping on board as this event grows, supporting the British public in what is expected to become a record-breaking singalong. Internationally renowned British conductor Suzi Digby and Sir Tim Rice are also backing the event. The ‘epicentre’ event will be in
Trafalgar Square is booked for a massed Doorstep Carols singalong with Popchoir, and The Spread a Smile Choir, which is made up of patients, their siblings and friends, are set to sing outside Great Ormond Street Hospital. The Rhythm Studio and Project Get Singing are also engaging communities and choirs across London and beyond. Canterbury and Winchester Cathedrals are also involved as well as churches, choirs, hospices, schools and care homes across the UK, and the Military Wives Choirs are linking with the military engagement branch to enable overseas soldiers to sing with their loved ones at home for the first time in history. Doorstep Carols organiser Katy Rink said: “Last year we saw some wonderful scenes up and down the country, with people joining in on their doorsteps
and having a good time with their neighbours.
“We’re delighted that local BBC radio stations are on board again this year so that people should be able to tune in wherever they are. It’s about celebrating the joy of singing together and sharing the experience. “The capacity for this event to glue communities together is exciting – It’s so simple and absolutely free.” “This year will hopefully be more of a street party festival atmosphere, with neighbours able to celebrate and sing together,” says co-organiser Beth Heath. The message behind the magic is a serious one following restrictions on collective music and performance. Doorstep Carols 2021 aims to remind the nation of the social and psychological benefits of singing together. Doorstep Carols is partnering with multiple charities that recognise the value of music in the work that they do. These include Youth Music, Dementia UK, Demelza Children’s Hospice, MindUK, Spread a Smile, Ex Cathedra and others. For more information visit www.doorstepcarols.co.uk and find out how to tune in, download the words and music and sing along on Wednesday, December 15th at 6pm!

Why personalised gifts are the best
G
ift-giving should be enjoyable, a chance to surprise someone, yet sometimes it can be tricky to choose the right gift. Rather than trudging around or scrolling online for hours, have you thought about making your gift? Getting creative might just be the answer you are looking for. This summer we launched the Museum of Royal Worcester PaintYour-Own-Pottery Studio and have seen hundreds of families and friends enjoy getting creative, inspired by their surroundings, making gifts that will be treasured forever. Here’s a few reasons we think it’s worth getting personal with your gift giving. 1) Personalised gifts are fun and creative Personalised gifts show how well you know someone, and that you have gone out of your way to make sure the gift is perfect for them. Making something means it can become a fun and creative process, far more exciting than endless online shopping. 2) Personalised gifts are unique Choosing a personalised gift is something that is uniquely theirs, and sure to avoid that awkward situation where you end up buying the same as someone else. Perhaps they have a favourite pet, you could choose a dog bowl for their four-legged friend. Or do they love nothing better than curling up with their favourite book and a warm drink? Why not pop down to The Museum and paint a beautiful mug and then fill it full of cocoa
mix and marshmallows to make a yummy hot chocolate - sounds like a perfect treat, doesn’t it? 3) Personalised gifts are a memory that will last forever Gifts like flowers, chocolates and socks are easily forgotten, whereas personalised gifts are memorable, especially if they are given as an experience. Do you remember those treasured moments with your own grandparents? Why not opt for a day out together doing something fun? Combine a PaintYour-Own-Pottery experience with refreshments and enjoy exploring the Museum before or after your session. Book ahead to make your very own personalised gift at our Paint-Your-Own-Pottery Studio, from pet bowls to hot chocolate mugs, we have a full range of bisque ready to choose, from £9 upwards. Plus we have beautiful gift vouchers available to pass on the joy of a special day out, for Paint-Your-Own-Pottery sessions, our gift shop, special events and tours. Perfect for Christmas and birthday gifts as well as school holiday activities. Find out more, including booking and opening times, visit museumofroyalworcester.org
