Looking out through steamy windows on a drab February day into your garden can be a depressing experience. What if you could make that view more inviting? What if you could look out onto a space that invites you to enter it?
T
he health benefits of being outside are well known: being outdoors makes us fitter, happier and healthier. Despite this, with fewer people working outside and
more of us driving, most of us are spending less time outside than we could. It is not just adults who are missing out - according to a recent study by the National Trust, the average child today plays outside for less than an hour a day.

FEBRUARY IN THE GARDEN IS A TIME OF PROMISE Winter is a great month for pouring over new designs, dreaming about those new plants to buy and really focusing on the changes you would like to do in your garden. From complete border designs to just tweaks or removing a few plants which have outgrown their space. This will be a time well worth spent when the sun starts to shine and you can really enjoy those changes.

It’s still too early to sow and plant, so why not get creative with practical projects? Now is an excellent time to create a pond. It will be ready for the frogs next month to lay their spawn. You can use a pre-formed liner, or create your own size and shape by using flexible butyl liner. Within a short time it will attract birds, amphibians and insects - increasing the wildlife in your growing area. You can choose a variety of attractive plants, from marsh marigold to water mint, even Hollywood-style water lilies. But perhaps most importantly, you have a wonderful place to sit, observe, and enjoy the waterside wildlife. For step by step advice, see Garden Organic’s advice at www.gardenorganic.org.uk/creating-pond. You can also create a compost heap area. Home-made compost is the dark beating heart of a healthy organic garden – its rich material adding nutrients and structure to your soil, giving plants the very best home to thrive in. Making compost is easy, just keep adding your kitchen vegetable waste, some card or paper, maybe some lawn cuttings, and soon you will have that rich, dark, crumbly stuff. It’s quite different to the bags you buy – and oh so good for the soil! Go to Garden Organic’s www.gardenorganic. org.uk/compost for all the advice you need. From choosing your bin, how to make one, where to site it and what to put in it. Are your pots, greenhouse and cold frames all clean and ready for spring sowing? Pests and diseases can overwinter in old potting compost, which could damage seedlings. Scrub pots well in hot soapy water, clean any glass of the algae, and sweep out the whole growing area to get rid of as many overwintering pests as possible. If you buy ready-made compost make sure it is peat free and certified for organic use. After all that activity, now is the time to sit with a cuppa and plan your planting. Make a list of all the vegetables and flowers you love. Then think about where to put them. Be realistic. It’s no good

hungry as berry supplies are depleted yet there are few insects around. Frozen ground means birds like thrushes and robins struggle to peck out the earthworms and other bugs they feed on. So it’s an important time to keep feeding your garden birds a high energy seed mix. Attract different birds by adding new food treats such as suet for long-tailed tits or niger seed for goldfinches. With deciduous trees bare, this is a good time to take a woodland walk where you might see larger mammals including muntjac or roe deer. Watch out for a flash of white at the rear of an animal about 1m tall, this will be our native roe deer making a quick exit. Handsome herons Elegant herons start to feel amorous in February. Herons are sociable birds and use established nesting areas known as heronries, returning year after year. The male birds are first to arrive and start gathering nesting materials while

Green shoots and golden glimmers Snowdrops are flowering and by the end of February you may also spot lesser celandine. These pretty yellow flowers are a really useful source of early pollen for queen bees emerging to forage. Golden yellow hazel catkins unfurl in February, appearing in clusters on bare stems before the leaves emerge. Hazel has a great fan in the dormouse as it provides them with food through the year. In spring-time hazel leaves are feasted on by caterpillars which dormice then feed upon. The autumn nuts are ideal for helping dormice fatten up for winter hibernation. shouldn't be swayed by others' opinions: "There are no real rules about what second brides should wear. The only generally accepted guideline is that it's unusual to have either a veil or a train. "Beware of relatives or sales assistants who may try to convience you into having a sensible outfit purely because it is a second wedding. If you want to wear something very ornate or dressy, then why not? Deliberately dressing down may give your partner the message that this wedding is somehow second best - and you'll probably regret it when you look through the photographs in years to come." Divorced parents at the wedding Second weddings are more likely to encounter the problem of divorced parents and step parents all wanting to attend. But if parents don't get on, this demands careful organisation. "Don't leave it until the last moment to decide where people sit or stand at the ceremony, or just hope that things will 'sort themselves out,'" says Jill. "Sadly, this is not likely to happen without considerable foresight and planning on your part." "There is no need to have parents at your side, either at a line-up or at your table. The top table can be made up of bride and groom and best man and attendants. If the wedding is large enough, divorced parents can be seated at tables strategically placed at a safe distance, each surrounded by a group of people who are 'on their side." Who to tell Jill advises telling as few people as possible about your wedding plans before the invitations have gone out especially if you wish to keep it a small affair: "Start telling friends and family that it's only going to be a small wedding and you can guarantee they'll assume it includes them,' she explains. But make sure that your ex knows about the wedding. 'Don't let him hear through the grapevine. This could cause unnecessary ill-feeling between you." How to make it different Annie Lee, of Daughter of Design gives her top 5 ideas:

This is also a perfect solution for couples who want to wed in a causal setting with just a few close friends and family members, or for those looking to combine wedding and honeymoon costs. Ditch the traditional walk down the aisle: Why not shake things up a bit and kick off your wedding with the receiving line instead, recommends Lee. Play the musical selection of your choice, stand together, and welcome each of your guests as they enter the ceremony to take their seats. Once everyone is settled you can walk each other up to the altar to meet the officiant. There are a number of ways that you can work your children into your wedding. Perhaps the simplest option would be to write children's names in place of where parents' names would traditionally go on the invitation. Word the invite in a way that suggests they're giving away their parent. Why not have them partake in the actual ceremony by doing a reading or being an attendant? If you'd still like to have the support and presence of a parent at your wedding without following the more traditional father-daughter walk down the aisle, there are sensible alternatives. Depending on what other roles you've designated for your ceremony, you might use your parents as part of your wedding party or have them read something during the ceremony, says Lee. Your father could also walk your mother or another close family member down the aisle. Her last suggestion is the shock tactic, throw a surprise wedding! This is a great alternative if you're looking for a truly intimate celebration. Here is how it works: Select a date and venue, then send out invitations requesting

Public Transport: The nearest railway station is at Redditch. There are buses X19 and ‘Diamond’ 67 route serving Studley from Stratford, Alcester, Redditch and Bromsgrove directions. Please use ‘Traveline’. Parking: Those travelling by car can use the free car park off the High Street or park sensitively in the outer streets of Studley. O/S Map: Explorer 220 | Distance: The walk is 4.5 miles. The shorter option is 2.5 miles | Time: The walk can be completed in a few hours but paths can be muddy after rain so allow plenty of time. Refreshments: There are a few places to eat in Studley or enjoy a picnic. Terrain: Please do not attempt this walk if the River Arrow is in flood. The route is mainly flat with a few gentle gradients to climb. Waterproof boots or comfortable ‘wellies’ are essential. Wheelchair users and pushchairs will need to just explore the village but due to the gradients, wheelchair users will need assistance.
HISTORY: Studley was at one time an important needle-making village with the famous ‘Aero’ knitting needle factory located there and sewing needles being milled nearby. The Roman Ryknild Street went along the line of the current A435 Alcester to Birmingham Road. The Parish Church is detached from the present village being about ½ mile across the meadows of the River Arrow. Behind the Church is where the old Studley Castle stood. In 1834, the current ‘castle’ was built and is currently awaiting development as a Hotel. Please follow any diversion signs.
Cross the stiled footbridge over the River Arrow, climb the gentle slope to the kiss-gate onto the lane near the Church. (Note: the shorter walk turns left along the lane to point 10, see sketch-map). 4 Turn right to the corner and follow the lane round to left then straight on through the metal gate and up the slope along Arden Way towards the Castle. Shortly you will reach a diversion sign. (Note: the diversion will be in place for at least a year while work is carried out to convert Studley Castle into a Hotel, opening in Spring 2018). 5 Currently, the diversion goes right around the perimeter of the castle (following the waymarkers) past some of the mature ornamental conifers with glimpses of the lovely early 19th Century building. Turn right near the modern house and along the woodland

Keep straight ahead, notice the old route-way on the right that once led to Studley. In the next field, the path deviates left along a course of old lane crossing ‘ridges and furrows’ to the kissgate into Castle Road. Cross back to the corner in the same field (see sketch-map). After a few hundred yards the path comes alongside the River Arrow to a kiss-gate leading onto the footbridge. 10 Cross the bridge and follow the path round to the entrance of Priory Farm. Notice the stone building with ornate chimneys - remains of the 12th Century Augustinian Priory. Walk down the tree-lined drive into the village centre, where the walk ends. Why Do We Celebrate
St Valentine’s Day? The tradition of Valentine’s Day has developed from a strange combination of Catholicism and Roman Paganism. Early Christians celebrated Valentine’s Day in honour

widely used on Valentine’s Day today. Furthermore, around February 14th ancient Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia, a festival to encourage fertility. A custom of this festival developed whereby the maidens in a village would put their names into a box, each of which was then drawn out by a young man. The man would then accept the girl he chose as his love for the remainder of the festival, if not longer. St Valentine’s Day was officially removed from the church calendar in 1969 and the festival of Lupercalia was abolished

If you do have a better half, Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to kick up the romance in your relationship. Why not relive a particularly romantic moment? Take your partner to the restaurant where you had your first date, first said: ‘I love you’ or even where you got engaged. If you are feeling particularly extravagant, why not jet off to your favourite romantic location for a night or two? If all else fails, a bunch of red roses never goes down badly. Whatever you choose to do, remember St Valentine’s Day is
