2022 LEAMINGTON PRIZE WINNERS The Leamington Music Prize winners for 2022 are the FÉLICITÉ PIANO TRIO. The Competition for the Prize, first awarded in 2009, was held at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on Monday 21 March, with seven groups taking part. The Félicité Piano Trio, which was formed in 2018, played works by Lili Boulanger and Clara Schumann. The Trio is led by Ricardo Brown Roger who was born in Valencia in Spain, where he started his studies on the violin, before moving to the Royal College of Music in London and then as a postgraduate to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. The cellist in the Trio, Lucy Samuels, began her studies aged 7 with the Berkshire Maestro Trust. Now in her fourth year at the Conservatoire, she was earlier this year awarded the position of inaugural Student-in Residence with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. The Trio’s pianist, Lucy Eccleshall, is from Derbyshire and in her final year studying for her Bachelor of Music Degree at the Conservatoire. Like the other members, she is passionate about education and teaching piano and she will have a piano tutor book for beginners published this summer. The Leamington Music Prize consists of a cheque of £1250 for the Trio and a concert which is currently planned to be in the Autumn as part of the Leamington Music winter concerts series. Festival Director Richard Phillips, who was the Adjudicator for the Prize said, “Originally 23 groups from the Conservatoire entered for the Prize and we heard seven of them on Monday. Not only was the standard extremely high but the range of music-making enormous with two string quartets, saxophone and trombone quartets, a trio of flute, cello and piano, a septet with harp formed to play Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro and the winning Piano Trio. Not an easy task to pick a winner!” Leamington Music, launched in 2006, promotes the annual Leamington Music Festival which takes place over the first bank holiday weekend in May, a winter season of concerts with a monthly series of string quartets in Leamington and early music in Warwick and a flourishing Education Programme, in association with Warwickshire Music. n n 6 | Warwickshire Now | Issue 62 | April 2022

easier, plus when we have more room to ‘breathe’, we can feel so much clearer and productive. So here is a top-ten list of ways that you can declutter your home: Take your time Break down the process room by room if necessary. You don’t want to feel overwhelmed by the process and you never know, you might find some items that you really love that you had forgotten all about! really don’t want to get rid of it because of the monetary value, then why not sell it on eBay or Facebook Marketplace? Don’t just go through your drawers Flat surfaces like worktops, coffee tables and bedside tables can become a breeding ground

for cluttering (and makes for harder housework too). This doesn’t necessarily mean throwing it all away but organising items better can help declutter massively. Whether it be a dedicated drawer or shelf for your piles of cooking books or spices, or a box on the kitchen side to throw your keys, purse and change into at the end of the day; even the littlest of actions can make things feel more minimalist. ould I Seek Help? with possible eviction or repossession. How can a debt adviser help me? A debt adviser will help you come up with a budget and a plan to pay back your debts. They will advise you on how to contact your creditors to arrange repayments. Some advisers will negotiate with your creditors for you. Below are some things your debt adviser may discuss with you: • your income and expenses so the adviser can help you complete a budget. • your circumstances, such as whether you own your home, so they can understand your personal situation and discuss what options might suit you best. • your debts and creditors so they can advise you on the options for dealing with them. • all your options and identify what steps to take next. It’s important to tell the debt adviser if any of the following applies to you:

• if any of the debts belonged to a spouse, partner or civil partner who has died • if your debts come from signing an agreement or a loan that you didn’t properly understand

Don’t panic if you’re behind on these bills.

The following information is helpful for your debt adviser so try to have these on hand before you speak or see one: bank statements for the past 3 months; how much you owe and to whom; any letters or demands from your creditors; how old your debts are.

gas or electricity bills?

What debts should I pay off first? Be open with your debt adviser about all your debts so that he or she can help you to prioritise them, as not all debts are the same. Some debts, called ‘priority debts’, can lead to serious trouble if they aren’t paid. For example, if you don’t pay your mortgage, your home could be repossessed. Priority debts include: mortgage; rent; Council Tax; gas or electricity; water; and unpaid fines.

Seek advice as soon as possible so that you and your debt adviser can work out a plan of action to repay the money. Can my energy be cut off if I can’t pay my If you don’t pay your gas or electricity bill within 28 days, your energy supply could be cut off. However, it can’t be cut off without notice and your gas or energy company must send you a warning letter. If everyone in your home is of pension age, they can’t cut off your energy supply between 1 October and 31 March. If you’re having difficulty paying your gas or electricity bills, tell your supplier as soon as possible. You may be able to work out a payment plan or install a pre-payment meter. n Age UK Coventry & Warwickshire: 01926 458100

Stay home in safety with Spring Retirement’s live-in carers Many older people dread having to move into full-time residential care, but realise they can no longer manage alone with deteriorating health or mobility. Live-in carers can provide a very welcome alternative, helping them to stay in their own home, retaining their independence, control, and lifestyle, for a cost comparable to that of going into a paid-for residential setting. Spring Retirement is a small, wellestablished family business which provides that full-time, live-in support from a pool of well-qualified, highly experienced people who combine kindliness with the highest standards of professional care. Rated all-round as ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission, the company carries out careful assessments of each client’s needs and matches them with carers of compatible personality. The carers take a spare bedroom and live in as a family member might do, helping with tasks including housework, shopping, personal care, social activities and special interests. At this time of year many people take pleasure in tending their own gardens and a live-

in Spring Retirement carer can help them do as much as they wish and are able. Importantly, they keep their whole home and stay in their own neighbourhood, among friends and familiar faces. When people find that a few hours a week of domiciliary care from an agency is insufficient the Spring Retirement live-in service means somebody is always present, providing not only practical help but also companionship. And, with the company’s IT kit, trusted relatives can log in at any time to check that all is well, giving them peace of mind. Support may be short-term, perhaps for just two or three weeks following illness or surgery, or long-term, when you can get great support from the carers looking after you. Managing Director Richard Sharples says: “With a live-in carer you get one-to-one attention, which is very different to other options.” n Spring Retirement, 103 High Street, Evesham WR11 4DN T 01386 365001 E info@springretirement.co.uk www.springretirement.co.uk t @NowWarwickshire | G Warwickshire Now | w www.nowmagazines.co.uk 17 n

Children Encouraged to Walk for Wellbeing During Walk to School Week Thousands of children across the UK will celebrate the benefits of walking during Walk to School Week (16 - 20 May 2022). Walk to School Week is organised by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking as part of their National Walking Month campaign each May. Families will be encouraged to walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or ‘Park and Stride’ for the whole week to see the big differences that come from small steps, from healthier and happier children to fewer cars outside the school gates. This year’s challenge, #PowerUp, will engage pupils through video gameinspired design, encouraging them to travel sustainably to school every day of the week. Each day, the #PowerUp challenge will take pupils through five levels: ‘Team Up’, ‘Defeat Danger’ ‘Boost Health’, ‘Save the Planet’ and ‘Lead the Way’. These daily missions will respectively teach them about the social, road n 20 | Warwickshire Now | Issue 62 | April 2022

safety, physical, mental, and environmental benefits of walking. Daily reward stickers and special reward badges are up for grabs at the end of the week for those who travelled actively every day. Walk to School Week classroom packs, containing resources for up to 30 pupils, are available to order now. Last year, a record number of over 350,000 pupils across the UK took part in Walk to School Week, with this year looking to be bigger than ever. Stephen Edwards, Interim Chief Executive, Living Streets said: “Walk to School Week is an excellent opportunity for pupils across the

UK to come together and celebrate the many benefits of walking to school. “Schools that take part in Walk to School Week can enjoy reduced congestion and pollution, while children are well on their way to meeting the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day to stay fit, healthy and happy. “We can’t wait to have more families enjoying the fresh air, freedom, friendship and fun that walking to school brings this Walk to School Week.” n For more information on Walk to School Week and to get your classroom packs, visit livingstreets.org.uk/wtsw
