THE
New Highway Code rules
A revamped version of the Highway Code came into force earlier this year. Updates were actioned with the ultimate goal to improve the safety of ‘vulnerable’ road users and make streets across the UK more secure. As fatality rates on our roads are starting to grow for the first time in forty years, this was a muchneeded However, move.following a survey conducted in January, 33% of British drivers were unaware of the changes. The Highway Code applies to anyone using our streets and contains a comprehensive set of guides and rules to promote road safety, so it is important for everyone to familiarise themselves with its recent additions.
n 6 | Warwickshire Now | Issue 67 | September 2022 HERE & NOW
The Highway Code has recently been amended to ensure that roads in Scotland, England, and Wales are as secure and accident-free as possible. Many changes have been introduced to safeguard road users deemed the most vulnerable, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders. One of the most prominent introductions is the so-called ‘hierarchy of road users’. This ensures that motorists, who can cause the greatest harm in the event of a collision, are given the responsibility to minimise the danger they may pose to other road users. With the new dispositions, drivers of passenger and large goods vehicles are asked to look out for road users who are more likely to sustain severe injuries.
What’s more, recent changes have clarified existing rules on pedestrian priority, both when crossing the street and on pavements. One of the new points states that, at a junction, traffic should always give way to people who are waiting to cross. Drivers must give priority to pedestrians who have moved onto a zebra crossing and should do the same with walkers who are waiting to step onto it.
Other Highway Code amends to make a note of those offering guidance on safe passing distances. Previously, rules simply highlighted drivers could only overtake when safe and legal while making sure to leave enough space from the overtaken vehicle or road user. The revised code goes into more detail about distances. If overtaking a cyclist, motorists should leave a one and a half metres distance when driving at 30mph, and at least two metres when cruising at a higher speed. When overtaking horse riders or horse-drawn vehicles, drivers should reduce their speed to under 10mph and keep a distance of about two metres. Road accidents can have serious consequences, this is why it is crucial to abide by the rules and advice outlined by the Highway Code. While not a legal document, the Highway Code provides extensive guidance on good practice for all road users, and many instructions are supported by the law. One of the most obvious examples is the condemnation of reckless driving. Anyhow, failure to comply with the Highway Code will not result in fines or prosecution, but it can be used as a baseline to determine liability in a civil claim. From offering extra protection to road users to clarifying pedestrian priority and safe passing distances, the new Highway Code covers updated tips on how to keep Britain’s streets more secure. With more transparent rules, victims of road incidents will also receive more protection.
When it comes to personal injury claims, the new rules will make it more difficult for drivers to avoid liability, and as a result, victims will be able to obtain compensation in a more timely manner, allowing them to get on with their lives. n

The kitchen is the heart of the home and one of the most important spaces buyers will look at when viewing your property. And while a full kitchen renovation might add up to 10% to the value of your home, it’s also one of the most expensive rooms to refurbish. However, some cheaper kitchen renovation work can make a big impact, without breaking the bank. Repaint your cupboards New cupboards and cabinets are one of the biggest costs you’ll face when fully renovating your kitchen. So, to save money, why not simply paint the cabinets you already have? If they’re in good condition and the style works for you, repainting them in a more on-trend colour can be a great way to breathe new life into your kitchen for a minimal cost. A new backsplash A new backsplash is a great way to add texture or colour to your kitchen without spending money on larger items. Tiles, stone, glass, or ceramic can all make a big impression on your space and replace a tired-looking existing backsplash. A new countertop Although a new countertop can be one of the more expensive elements of a kitchen renovation, it’s also an area that is well used and can make a big impact. While a granite countertop may be out of your price range, quartz or wooden counters can look equally as striking and bring out a freshness in your existing cabinets.

3. Living room renovations on a budget Living rooms should be a functional yet welcoming and comfortable space. And the great thing about them is the majority of renovation work can be done without spending huge sums of money. New flooring Flooring is one of the key design elements in any living room. So, if your property’s laminate or carpet has seen better days, a good way to spend some of your budget could be on laying a new floor. Laminate or hard wood flooring can be expensive and tricky to lay, but there are some great budget peel and stick options that can look equally as striking and are straightforward to fit.
2. Budget bathroom renovations Bathrooms are another area of the home where it’s possible to make a big impression without spending too much money on a full renovation. A new bathroom can boost your home’s value, but even cheaper touches can make a huge difference. New cabinetry Bathroom suites can sometimes feel a little ‘white’ and sterile. So, often it’s the things around the suite that have the biggest impact on how it looks and feels. Try adding a new medicine or storage cabinet to a feature wall – one with a built-in mirror can also help make the space feel bigger. Look to add a cabinet that contrasts your bathroom wall colour, as this can create a focal point away from the sanitary ware itself. Add some wallpaper Wallpaper was always traditionally a no-go for bathrooms, but not now. By hanging wallpaper on a bathroom feature wall, you’ll be adding colour and interest to your bathroom space at a very small cost. And if you want to save even more money on hiring a decorator to hang it for you, there are some great peel-and-stick options available that you can hang yourself. A roll-top bath As bathroom features go, there are few more striking than a traditional roll-top bath. If you have the space for one, there are some great options available at all budget levels.
5. Budget bedroom renovations Bedrooms should be tranquil havens of peace and relaxation – and there are plenty of budget renovations you can do to make yours feel exactly that. A wallpaper feature wall Bedrooms often provide excellent feature wall opportunities – and wallpaper can really help your room stand out. Don’t be afraid to go bold on your feature wall but think carefully about colours given your bedroom is ultimately a space for calming sleep.
4. Renovate your hallway on a budget If you’re doing renovation work with a view to selling your home, the hallway can be a hugely important area to get right. After all, it’s the first thing potential buyers will see when they enter your property on a viewing. Add a mud bench Hallways can be striking and make an immediate impression, but they need to be practical, too. A mud bench is not only a great way to store away things like shoes and coats, but it’s also a lovely feature. A stair runner Carpeted stairs can become worn and look tired. So, you could consider painting your stairs and adding a runner as a focal point. DIY wall panelling Wall panelling has become more popular in recent years – particularly in period properties – and is a great way to add a textured feature to your home. There are a number of options, from very intricate, ornate designs to classic shaker-style panelling. And if you’re looking to save more cash, why not try to fit the panels yourself?

Consider adding some new curtains to work with your living room’s colour scheme or, if your budget stretches a little further, wooden shutters can be a superb design addition. Improved lighting Much of how your living room looks and feels is down to lighting. Getting the balance right can be tricky, though, so consider installing a dimmer switch, which will mean you’ll have a softer, more ambient light level for cosy evenings in.
More storage Storage is key in most rooms, and definitely something buyers will be looking for in a bedroom. 3. Consider a week day nuptials Weddings on the weekend can cost thousands of pounds more than a week day, too. And while it’s often thought it helps guests by having a wedding on a Saturday because they don’t have to book time off work, at the end of the day, it’s your wedding - do what’s right for you and your partner.
The cost of living crisis is worsening by the day - and with an average UK wedding costing upto £35,000, it’s no wonder brides-to-be are looking for tips and tricks to cut the cost.
2. Consider an ‘off peak’ season wedding. Weddings in July, August or December can cost thousands of pounds more just because it’s peak season yet September and October often have some of the most beautiful weather of the year. Have a think about when you want your wedding - some venues may even have offers for less popular times of year.

6. Utilise samples Always check if a supplier offers free samples - and try before you buy! We offer this service for wedding invitations, save the dates and more so our customers can see the quality and design before ordering.
1. Set your budget, and stick to it! Look at what you can afford and set your budget, once you have your budget set, be really strict with yourselves and stick to it. That way you’ll soon start to realise what’s important to you and your partner and it will help narrow down what you’re happy to pay for.
But just how can engaged couples save on the cost of their big day without skimping on the quality of the wedding they want? Lisa Forde, wedding expert and founder of stationery favourites Tree of Hearts, has listed seven of her top tips to consider when planning:
4. Consider your guest list carefully. Micro weddings were introduced during the pandemic but at Tree of Hearts we’re noticing more and more couples deciding to downsize their wedding guest list. Do you need to invite family you haven’t seen in 10 years just because it’s etiquette, or your friends’ partners who you’ve never met?
7. Seek out new, up and coming suppliers.
Whether a up and coming wedding band or a photography student with beams of enthusiasm, you don’t need to spend thousands on some suppliers. Just make sure you check out their portfolio before booking to check it’s in your style and taste.
Lisa added: “But most importantly don’t forget to remember why you’re getting married in the first place. It’s a celebration of you and the person you love deciding to commit to one another. You don’t need to spend tens of thousands of pounds in order to do that.”
5. Sign up to supplier email mailing lists. Make sure you sign up to any of your favourite suppliers mailing lists to be first to hear of any offers or samples - we’re often emailing our lovely Tree of Hearts subscribers with news, advice and offers.

They found that the use was split Personal bathing (33%), taps (31%) and toilet flushing (22%) are the highest areas of consumption. They then compared just how accurately householders perceive and self-report wateruse behaviours. This is real frequency, duration and volume of water-use activities, observed from the micro-component monitoring, compared against householder self-reported assessments given during the interviews and Water Energy Calculator survey. The households significantly over-reported the number of baths and showers they took in a week: 5.4 baths and showers a week were reported, only 3.9 were observed. The households accurately reported their use of washing machines and dishwashers. Half of the households were unable to identify the highest water-using activity in their home. In particular, the households incorrectly assumed that washing machines are the biggest users of water. The water used by toilets was underestimated, even though overall they typically use far more than washing machines. In 2022, in a time of hose pipe bans has our understanding increased of how we use water in the intervening 9 years. Age UK has just issued the following advice Tips for saving water There are many ways to save water at home, including:
• Do not use your washing machine or dishwasher on half-load – full loads use less water than two half loads.
Saving Water
• Take showers instead of baths - a 5-minute shower uses half as much water as a bath.
In 2013 the Energy Saving Trust produced a comprehensive report on the use of water in our homes.
Tenants with a fixed-term tenancy of less than six months must ask their landlord’s permission. Tenants with a fixed term tenancy of six months or more have the right to have a water meter fitted, but they may need their landlord’s permission to have an internal meter fitted if plumbing must be altered.
• Replace worn washers on leaky taps. A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and over a year can add over £18 to your annual water bill.
n 18 | Warwickshire Now | Issue 67 | September 2022 GOLDEN YEARS
You can revert to unmeasured charging within two years of installation, but there are exceptions – see section 11. This only applies if you applied for the meter, not to subsequent occupiers of the property who must keep a previously installed meter. n
• Keep a bottle or jug of water in the fridge instead of running tap water until it gets cold (cover the jug and keep no longer than a day).
Water meters The CCW website www.ccwater.org.uk has a water meter calculator that can estimate if you can cut your water bills by switching to a meter. The calculation is based on your water company’s charges and information provided by you about your water usage. Your water company can provide you with guidance on obtaining a water meter. Meters are installed free of charge for household customers.

There’s a lot for your child to remember when they first start secondary school so keep a copy of their timetable so you know what lessons they have and can remind them what they need in their bag each day so they don’t turn up unprepared.
At each educational change similar issues appear...
Dispel the bullying myths There are a lot of myths about secondary school – having your head flushed down the toilet by older kids is one of the most enduring. Talk about your own school days with your child (the good memories at least) and let them know that most older kids will just ignore them. Remind them that everyone in their year is in the same boat and will be feeling nervous on their first day. Even if they have plenty of friends from primary in their class already, tell them to smile at anyone who looks lonely and introduce themselves. Everybody will want to make new friends. Plus, if your child is looking out for other lonely kids, that might help them feel less lonely themselves!
Let them have a say in their school uniform No one wants to stick out when starting a new school so let your child have a hand in choosing their bag and uniform. Tempting as it is to buy their uniform a few sizes too big or get them a practical but ugly school bag, letting them choose things that will help them fit in will make them feel more confident. Keep a copy of their school timetable
Mobile phone use - While your child might not be allowed to have their phone turned on in school hours, knowing they can contact you on the way there or way home is a comfort for both of you, particularly if they use public transport.
Keeping an open dialogue with your child is one of the most important aspects of helping them settle in a new school. Throughout the process, keep communicating and gauge how your child is feeling about what lies ahead. Encourage after school activities
If there is one thing that will help your child settle in a new school more easily, it’s making friends. In class, their teacher will likely set up a buddy system, so they have someone to help show them the ropes in those first few weeks. Elsewhere, it’s important to encourage your child to take other opportunities to get to know people. Mirror the hobbies and teams your child was a part of in their old school and let them bond with likeminded children in their new environment. Once they begin to make friends and have settled in nicely, consider organising a play date, like you did years ago. This is a great opportunity to build friendships outside of the formalities of school and gives you a chance to mix with some of your fellow parents. How long will it take for my child to be truly settled in their new school? You know your child best, but if they still have issues and concerns after six weeks or so, it may be worth mentioning to the school.
Children adapt to new things at different rates. Your first instinct should always be patience. Give it time and your child will no doubt love their new school as much as their old one.
One of the biggest changes for children’s lives is moving to a new school.
Settle into a New School or Class
Reassure them and listen when they need you Your child might feel they’re too old to need you now but be on hand to listen to any worries about lessons or friends, however trivial and help them work things out. Be prepared for a few strops as they settle in and give them a bit of leeway. If it’s a struggle getting them to talk about how school’s going, try talking to them while you’re in the car; when you’re both facing forward, it can make the conversational less confrontational, which helps a lot of teens to open up a bit more.
If they are starting secondary, heading to ‘big school’ for the first time can be daunting, they are going from a familiar environment where they’re the oldest to being the youngest all over again. They’ll also have to become more independent and cope with a larger workload.

As one of the UK’s leading schools for girls, King’s High is educating the Changemakers of the future – young women who will go out into the world and make a positive difference.
During the inspection, the inspectors observed that, ‘Pupils have very positive attitudes towards their work and are highly focused in lessons’, that they ‘achieve a high level of results, exceeding predictions at every level’ and they ‘benefit significantly from an atmosphere in school which is positive and one where learning and trying one’s best are celebrated’. Referencing the College’s extensive cocurricular programme, the inspectors commented that ‘pupils embrace wholeheartedly the many opportunities to participate in a myriad of activities’ and are able to ‘find their own unique passions and relish taking part in them, broadening their perspective on life’.

Girls go on to Arts Foundation courses, Music Conservatoires, Drama Colleges, and prestigious Degree Apprenticeships. 82% of students attend Russell Group universities and over 90% of students go on to their firstchoice university, studying a huge variety of subjects. n
Princethorpe College, the senior school of the Princethorpe Foundation, has received the highest possible ratings across all criteria from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).
Pupils’ personal development was also judged as ‘excellent’ with inspectors recognising that ‘pupils have a strong sense of moral responsibility, encouraged by an environment in which there are the key rules of Be Kind and Do Your Best’. n
As the Good Schools Guide states: ‘King’s High is carefully crafting a heady brew for the girls of absolutely top academic aspirations, endless opportunities to develop passions outside of the classroom and a focus on actions that will ground them in the real, inclusive world.’ King’s High has become a beacon for Educational Innovation, with their emphasis on Creative Thinking, and forward-thinking Curriculum of the Future Programme, that was devised by pupils and staff. King’s High have also designed and launched two new GCSE replacement ‘Future Ready’ courses. Their ‘Global Changemaker Programme’ includes units on climate change, global citizenship, law and the legal system, and social justice. The ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship Programme’ has units on data analysis, entrepreneurship, neuroscience, and sustainable engineering.
