House and Hampton Grange - which were recently awarded ‘6th best and number one nursing home in the West Midlands respectively’ by carehome.co.uk. If the position is successful it will be rolled out to Dorset House in the coming months. A new analysis of the healthcare sector is warning that the UK could face a shortage of 60,000 nurses in 2020 if measures are not put in place to resolve staffing issues. The survey, produced by Christie & Co, found using agency staff typically cost 100% more per hour than the cost of regular staff. The total agency share of overall staff costs has increased by 51% on average. Both increased reliance on agency nurses and pay increases for permanent staff means overall staffing costs

The

analysis

includes a survey of 12 of the largest nursing home providers who together offer 74,000 nursing home beds and represent around 30% of the UK sector. Heavy reliance on agency nursing staff can be detrimental to a healthcare provider and the quality of service for the end user. Nursing Home budgets are heavily impacted by the higher rates of agency nursing staff, curbing agency spend allows money to be invested back in the business and into the service provided to create better experiences for residents and relatives.

Composting at home Composting at home is a great way of reducing the amount of waste you throw away as well as producing lovely, organic compost for your garden - no more trips to the DIY store to buy mass produced compost, you'll have it at your fingertips!

W

orcestershire County Council is offering its residents subsidised compost bin starting at just ÂŁ9.99 and within 9-12 months of purchasing your bin you will have the compost ready to use in your tubs, borders

or hanging baskets. To make the best compost you need to have a good mixture of what they call "greens" and "browns". "Greens" are things like your vegetable peelings, grass cuttings, cut flowers and other garden waste. "Browns" are used to give it your compost bulk, so it includes things like cardboard egg boxes, newspaper or shredded paper. Other things you may not know you can put in a compost bin; your old till receipts; the contents of your vacuum bag; coffee grinds and tea bags; sawdust from your rabbit or hamster. Remember that you cannot put any cooked food or meat into your compost bin and it's best not to just put leaves and/or grass cuttings in too as this makes it slimy Worcestershire County Council has a team of Master Composters available to help residents who are unsure about how to get the best out of their compost bin and they can advise you free of charge either via email or face to face. weddings

shouldn't be swayed by others' opinions: "There are no real rules about what second brides should wear. The only generally accepted guideline is that it's unusual to have either a veil or a train. "Beware of relatives or sales assistants who may try to convience you into having a sensible outfit purely because it is a second wedding. If you want to wear something very ornate or dressy, then why not? Deliberately dressing down may give your partner the message that this wedding is somehow second best - and you'll probably regret it when you look through the photographs in years to come." Divorced parents at the wedding Second weddings are more likely to encounter the problem of divorced parents and step parents all wanting to attend. But if parents don't get on, this demands careful organisation. "Don't leave it until the last moment to decide where people sit or stand at the ceremony, or just hope that things will 'sort themselves out,'" says Jill. "Sadly, this is not likely to happen without considerable foresight and planning on your part." "There is no need to have parents at your side, either at a line-up or at your table. The top table can be made up of bride and groom and best man and attendants. If the wedding is large enough, divorced parents can be seated at tables strategically placed at a safe distance, each surrounded by a group of people who are 'on their side." Who to tell Jill advises telling as few people as possible about your wedding plans before the invitations have gone out especially if you wish to keep it a small affair: "Start telling friends and family that it's only going to be a small wedding and you can guarantee they'll assume it includes them,' she explains. But make sure that your ex knows about the wedding. 'Don't let him hear through the grapevine. This could cause unnecessary ill-feeling between you." How to make it different Annie Lee, of Daughter of Design gives her top 5 ideas:

34

any comparisons between the two events." This is also a perfect solution for couples who want to wed in a causal setting with just a few close friends and family members, or for those looking to combine wedding and honeymoon costs. Ditch the traditional walk down the aisle: Why not shake things up a bit and kick off your wedding with the receiving line instead, recommends Lee. Play the musical selection of your choice, stand together, and welcome each of your guests as they enter the ceremony to take their seats. Once everyone is settled you can walk each other up to the altar to meet the officiant. There are a number of ways that you can work your children into your wedding. Perhaps the simplest option would be to write children's names in place of where parents' names would traditionally go on the invitation. Word the invite in a way that suggests they're giving away their parent. Why not have them partake in the actual ceremony by doing a reading or being an attendant? If you'd still like to have the support and presence of a parent at your wedding without following the more traditional father-daughter walk down the aisle, there are sensible alternatives. Depending on what other roles you've designated for your ceremony, you might use your parents as part of your wedding party or have them read something during the ceremony, says Lee. Your father could also walk your mother or another close family member down the aisle. Her last suggestion is the shock tactic, throw a surprise wedding! This is a great alternative if you're looking for a truly intimate celebration. Here is how it works: Select a date and venue, then send out invitations requesting

how do you choose

WHERE TO EAT? For diners, choosing where to eat is a complex decision. In a report from the National Restaurant Association it stated that today’s diners are concerned about the quality of the food they’re eating, but they’re also looking at factors beyond food, like technology and a restaurant’s environmental impact. The report went on to highlight six things consumers take into account when choosing a restaurant.

Public Transport: The nearest Railway Station is at Kidderminster with buses to Arley. The Severn Valley Steam Railway operates from Easter to October. Check website. Check ‘Traveline’ for current bus timetables. Allow plenty of time to complete the walk before nightfall. Parking: There is parking on both sides of the River Severn at Arley. O/S Map: Explorer Map 218. Distance: Approx 4 miles, shorter woodland walk 2.5 miles. Time: Allow a morning or set off early afternoon to do this pretty riverside and woodland walk before darkness sets in. Refreshments: You will need a picnic or call in at ‘The Harbour Inn’ PH at Arley before or after your walk. There is a village shop for snacks and soft drinks and refreshments are available at the Steam Railway Station when it is operating. Terrain: (Do not attempt this walk if the river Severn is in flood). This walk is gently undulating with a gradual climb up the valley side on the return half of the walk. There are gates, footbridges and a few steps. You will need to cross the steam railway line, take great care. Boots are essential due to uneven paths and muddy areas. Poles are useful. History: Trimpley Reservoir was built in 1966. It covers 29 acres and the top pool is 40 feet deep. 30 million gallons per day are pumped into the Elan Valley Aqueduct to supply drinking water to residents of Tenbury Wells, Mamble and Birmingham.

(Note: shorter route rejoins main walk from left.) 7: Shortly, cross tributary that joins River Severn near Victoria Bridge. Turn left at fork with coloured marker post. When you reach ‘peak’ on track near barn, with ‘Huntsfield Farm’ down on left, you are at 300 feet above sea-level. golden years

Poor sleep can damage brain health in later life Experts have found that in order to maintain a healthy brain and stay mentally sharp, we must make it a priority to get the required amount of sleep in later life.

T

he new report into sleep in later life was conducted by the Global Council on Brain Health, in an initiative jointly convened by Age UK and the AARP.

According to the new research, sleeping well becomes harder as we age. Our sleep patterns change, so we become more vulnerable to waking up during the night and earlier in the morning. The health risks associated with sleep deprivation Feeling sluggish and under the weather is a common experience if we don’t sleep well, but there is less awareness of the fact that those of us who have chronic, inadequate sleep on a regular basis are at higher risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, fallrelated injuries, and cancer. Factors which disturb sleep Disturbances to sleep in older age can be environmental, such as the temperature of a bedroom, or related to lifestyle factors such as eating late or taking certain medications. Sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea are also more common in later life and ‘deep sleep’ decreases in adults between the ages of 30 to 60. How to improve your sleep quality The report includes a number of tips for people from middle age onwards to employ throughout the day to improve the quality of their sleep, which include:

B Get up at the same time every day B Expose yourself to natural sunlight during the daytime B Don't drink alcohol to help you to sleep B Try and eat dinner approximately three hours before going to bed B Don't drink coffee (caffeine) after lunch time B Don't look at an electronic screen of any kind after you get into bed - tablet, phone, laptop

B Avoid using over the counter sleep preparations B Wear socks to keep your feet warm in bed B Don't sleep with pets in the bedroom B Avoid arguments with spouse or partner before going to bed B Limit afternoon naps to less than 30 minutes For more information about how to improve your sleep quality please visit www.ageuk.org.uk

If the opportunity to ‘live free’ for a year wasn’t enough of an incentive, Aspen is offering to reduce the cost of living at Eastbank Court even further with the Aspen Assist shared equity scheme. It gives people aged 70 and over the option to pay just 80% of the purchase price, with Aspen retaining the remaining 20% equity until the property is resold at a later date. For example a one-bedroom apartment priced from £184,950 could be purchased for £147,960 with Aspen Assist.
