Local Shop Officially Opens in Lower Broadheath Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, “cut the ribbon” to officially open Lower Broadheath Community Shop and Post Office at The Bell Inn. The Bell Inn, which is at the heart of the community, has allowed space in the pub car park for a new building for a much-needed Community Shop and Post Office. Simon Townsend, Chief Executive of EI Public Partnership (formerly known as Enterprise Inns), which owns the pub, joined the MP at the community celebrations with refreshments served at The Bell Inn.

It is also a new social centre for villagers to meet, with chairs and high chairs for younger children. It is a gathering place for Mums with children right through to the elderly. Mark Glossop, Chairman of Lower Broadheath Community Shop Ltd, said: “The community has been really positive about the new community shop and Post Office because they were really needed in the village. Harriett Baldwin MP, said: “This new community-run shop and Post Office is fantastic news for the people of Lower Broadheath. It really shows what a community can achieve when they all work together to reach a vital goal. The shop looks great and the volunteers and managers are doing a marvellous job.”

sale as the building doesn’t look that big from the outside. We have a big focus on selling local produce to support local producers. “People really appreciate the Post Office being open much longer hours as they now have more choice when to visit as the nearest convenient for those without cars, but also for those with businesses in the village who can

bring their takings or for those local business people who sell items online. “The social centre has proved a great meeting place for the community, especially the lonely and the isolated. We have Mums from the village with their children to pensioners. Our shop volunteers, many of whom are retired, have also said that their new roles have given them a sense of purpose and they feel useful again and they also really enjoy meeting the community. We also have young people gaining work experience.” The shop is run by more than 50 volunteers from teenagers to pensioners and more than of these volunteers have undergone the additional training to serve Post Office customers. There are two part-time managers that are paid – Jessica Ronan and Victoria Howells. Lindsay Davies, Landlady of The Bell Inn, said: “It was very important for the community to have a shop and a Post Office again and we were in the ideal location across the road from the former shop and Post Office so we wanted to be able to help. The community is thrilled and really enthused.” n

Queen’s Award for Regal Volunteers The hard working volunteers at Tenbury’s Regal Theatre have been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service recognises outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Winners are announced each year on 2 June, the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. The Regal plays an important role in the community and is a creative hub for local people, presenting a mixed programme of live shows, cinema, workshops and broadcasts from the National Theatre and RSC. Volunteers are the heart of the Regal and carry out roles covering box office, front of house, film projection, lighting and sound n 4 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 190 | July 2019

technicians, backstage support, chaperoning, sweets and merchandise sales and ushers. Without them, the Regal would not be able to offer such a diverse programme. The Regal is one of 281 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The number of nominations and awards has increased year on year since the awards were introduced in 2002, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to make life better for those around them. “The volunteers are the backbone and spirit of The Regal” says Theatre Manager Adey Ramsel. “We are so proud of everyone who gives us their free time. This award is recognition of all the amazing work they do and what they have achieved to make us the success we are today. Each year our audience numbers increase and

the quality of our in-house shows gets better - I could not do my role without the volunteers and I’m over the moon they have been recognised in this way from such a prestigious level.” Stephen Snead, Chair of the Regal Tenbury Trust, said, “This is an outstanding achievement, which reflects the hard work, commitment and passion of everyone who volunteers at the Regal. Every volunteer plays an important part in the Regal’s success and makes such a valuable contribution to our community. I’m looking forward to our celebrations.” Two volunteers from The Regal attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May, along with other recipients of this year’s Award. The Regal will receive the award from the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, in early August. n

Stanbrook Abbey Hotel Showcases £4.2m Renovation

with the Opening of The Refectory Dining Room & Terrace Historic Stanbrook Abbey Hotel in Worcester, owned and operated by independent country house hotel group Hand Picked Hotels, has marked the completion of a £4.2m renovation with the official opening of their new restaurant, The Refectory Dining Room & Terrace. The launch event, hosted by Julia Hands, Chairman & CEO of Hand Picked Hotels and Gordon Burniston, Stanbrook Abbey Hotel’s General Manager with guest of honour Mike Forrester, President of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, welcomed clients and special guests from the local community, and those involved in the project, to celebrate the landmark opening with a Champagne reception and canapés from Head Chef David Humphreys. The design of the new restaurant, located in the original nun’s dining room, showcases the original features of the 16th Century hall such as hand-carved wood panelling, arched stone windows and stained glass, blended seamlessly with modern furnishings such as sumptuous velvet booths, textured

walls, statement lighting, framed bespoke photographs from the local area and bi-fold doors opening onto a sun-trapped terrace. To complement the stylish yet relaxed interior, David has created a menu of modern British dishes using locally sourced produce wherever possible. Dishes currently on the menu include whipped White Lake goats cheese with heritage beetroot and pickled pear; Pressing of Old Spot ham with pea purée, focaccia crisp, gherkin and wholegrain mustard and a Welsh rump and shoulder of lamb with carrot textures, fondant potato & burnt shallot. Dishes are complemented by an extensive list of New and Old World wines, which is available to browse on iPads at the table allowing for more in-depth descriptions and providing recommendations to diners based on food selection and taste. This renovation, representing the first phase of development at the iconic Grade II listed abbey following its acquisition by Hand Picked Hotels in 2017, took five months to complete. The new restaurant is the most dramatic transformation at the hotel given its relocation

from the second to the first floor and the former restaurant and previously unconverted nun’s quarters have been converted into 15 sumptuous new bedrooms, taking the total number of bedrooms to 70. Each bedroom has been finished in a warm and neutral palette and is designed to showcase varying unique features within the building such fireplaces or stained-glass windows, with every luxurious detail considered. The renovation project also includes the overhaul of St Anne’s Hall function suite, which now has a bright and welcoming design scheme with warm wood panelling and soft feature lights and is now fully air-conditioned to enhance its proposition for weddings, conferences, parties and private dining. Other features and facilities at Stanbrook Abbey Hotel include George’s Bar, The East Room for private functions, a cellar with party rooms and games rooms and the magnificent Callow Great Hall, the building’s original chapel. The hotel also offers complimentary Wi-Fi and complimentary parking. n

T.Rextasy is Coming to Malvern

T.Rextasy, presented by Sweeney Entertainments, return to the Forum Theatre, Malvern on Thursday 11th July at 7.45pm, transporting audiences back to relive the good old days of the 1970’s. Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan’s special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs, the band had a string of huge hits throughout the 1970s including Love to Boogie, Telegram Sam, Jeepster and 20th Century Boy. n 6 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 190 | July 2019

Accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original exmembers of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management, T.Rextasy have been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’. They have been performing all over the world for more than 25 years, a career that ironically out-lives Marc’s very own T.Rex

productions. The company saw its busiest year to date in 2018 and now has even more performances on offer, at a growing number of venues, and with the strongest audience figures to date. Julie said: “T.Rextasy return to venues across the UK in 2019 with another powerhouse evening of rock ‘n’ roll. This concert show boasts two hours of amazing completely live glam rock, with a generous mix of the popular hits, play b-sides and album tracks.”

The skilled musicianship of Danielz (Vocals & Lead Guitar), Neil Cross (Rhythm Guitars, Backing Vocals), Rob Butterfield (Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals) and John Skelton (Drums) lets the timeless music and legacy of Marc Bolan and T.Rex live on, performing everything from 20th Century Boy to Children of the Revolution as well as Telegraph Sam to Hot Love with superb authenticity.

Danielz, lead vocalist and lead guitarist, said “I absolutely love playing the songs of T.Rex. It’s the actual buzz one gets of going on stage and giving the audience a live experience. Fans are coming to have a good time, and when I see people smiling and doing just that it makes it really worthwhile.”

Sweeney Entertainments, co-founded by Julie and Peter Sweeney, has been providing a wide repertoire of top-quality touring shows for theatre and corporate events for over eighteen years both in the UK and internationally and now boasts a repertoire of fourteen touring

This full-on concert showcases all of the hits and more, with both electric and acoustic performances, faithfully recreating the energy and performance of Marc Bolan and T.Rex. Truly a rock’n’roll concert for all ages - If you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this show is for you! n

The Kitchen Doors

& Worktops Company

There is no such thing as typical customer, but if there was, it would probably be Beryl. Working part time as a researcher, Beryl feels she has the perfect life/work balance and wouldn’t want to change it. Her kitchen however, is a different matter... she’s been thinking about it for years! So how does the kitchen feature in the scheme of your daily life? Beryl: Well apart from being where I prepare all our meals, it’s still the room we all congregate in when I’m doing the Sunday Lunch. We have so many laughs in that room.., probably the most important room in the house really. What do you love most about your Kitchen? Beryl: Entertaining always brings a smile to my face – not as much as seeing my grandchildren painting or baking around the table but really, I actually still quite like our layout. It just works. What did you like least? Beryl: Maybe the fact it looked a little dated, that sometimes got to me, but the thing is a new kitchen isn’t cheap these days – I’ve heard of friends at work spending over £12000! Anything else? Beryl: Well a couple of the drawers were starting to go, but these modern smoothclose drawers are a world away from the old fashioned equipment that helps to date a kitchen. So how did you discover your solution? Beryl: A colleague at work had a quote from a kitchen company and they told her it would it cost far more than she could afford, it would n 12 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 190 | July 2019

take two weeks to complete and her kitchen would be out of action for all that time She found a local company that offered to visit her home, measure her doors and other worn elements and give her some ideas on how a kitchen makeover could save her a fortune. Did the cabinets need replacing? Beryl: Certainly didn’t for me! I only wanted the doors making to the correct size and a new worktop. That was perfect, and because my cabinets were in good condition it meant the changes wouldn’t take long to make. And did it take long? Beryl: Once the surveyor had been (this was the guy who made sure everything would fit perfectly), we felt confident that their experience of over 14 years would ensure we avoided any unnecessary issues. When they actually came to start the work, they were quick and very efficient. It was all done in about a day and a morning and they even cleaned up after themselves. Sounds like you enjoyed the experience! Beryl: Very much so, they are friendly, helpful and weren’t at all pushy. The end result really fooled a lot of my family who thought it was a totally new kitchen – but I can assure you, it’s not! Any final words Beryl: Yes! I’d recommend anyone to visit their cute showroom in the Hopmarket in Foregate St. It’s a beautiful building that matches the selection they have on show. Alternatively give them a call. They’ll gladly pop out to see you, and they bring all the samples with them! n www.doorsandworktops.com

Occasionally during summer a shout goes around our offices at Lower Smite Farm and we run outside to catch a glimpse of one of nature’s treats – a hummingbird hawk-moth. These large moths, their wingspan is about 2 inches, hover at flowers just like the bird from which they take their name. Their brown-grey bodies and wings are brightened by orange underwings and a tail of black and white. Take a closer look at the insect that’s hovering and then whipping through your flower bed and you’ll notice a long tongue…that’s the proboscis that the moth is using to sup the nectar.

For those of you who holiday around the Mediterranean, hummingbird hawk-moths may be a familiar sight. As we head south for some sun each year, thousands of them migrate northwards and into the UK. Just pause for a second to consider that remarkable journey – something as small and delicate as a moth flying across the English Channel! There is evidence that many migrate south again come autumn but some overwinter and we had reports in Worcestershire this year of hummingbird hawkmoths in gardens during spring; something that could only happen if they’d spent the winter here. July to September are the perfect months to keep a look out in your garden; weather permitting, of course. Here at Smite they’re most often found on valerian but they’ll also happily slurp away on our lavender and are also partial to viper’s bugloss, honeysuckle, buddleia and

colours and locations so they’ll often return to the same patch of flowers at the same time of day. The peak of moths in late summer is down to a locallyraised generation. They’re like many other butterflies and moths in being quite fussy eaters at the caterpillar stage – their favourite is bedstraw and wild madder but they’ve been seen laying eggs on valerian. If you discover large (6cm), colourful, striped caterpillars with a ‘horn’ at the rear end we’d love to hear from you; take a pic and drop us a line.

gardens and parks fluctuate each year but as the change in our climate continues, we’re seeing more hummingbird hawk-moths in the UK. If you’d like a chance of attracting these wonderful day-flying moths to your garden, have a think about how to include some of their favourite plants in your borders and pots. Instead of chopping down the ivy on your wall or fence, leave some to provide shelter and warmth for over-wintering insects – it won’t just be hummingbird hawk-moths that make use of it but other butterflies and moths too. Worcester Branch of

Helping Hands Officially Opens

The Worcester branch of Helping Hands has celebrated its grand opening on 5 June 2019 in its brand new office in Worcester City Centre. The event was attended by customers and carers alike who came to support the branch and celebrate the service that Helping Hands is providing to Worcester, Malvern and the surrounding areas. The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Ditta, officially opened the branch and gave a speech about the value of providing home care to the people of Worcester, and how great it is to see another local business opening up in the city centre. The Branch Manager, Petra Sunkova, said: “It is such a privilege to be able to celebrate this opening with my incredible customers and dedicated staff. “With this opening we can provide a hub for our carers, a point of enquiry for potential new customers and cup of tea for our existing customers - as well as a celebration of this incredible service.” n 26 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 190 | July 2019

The son of one of a Helping Hands customer also spontaneously took to the microphone at the event to express his gratitude towards Petra and her team for all that they had done for his mother, who is 101 years old. He said: “I would just like to say how timely Helping Hands has been for our family. Mum has her integrity and I have my mother”. Petra and her team provide support on all levels, from companionship and household support to complex medical care and personal care. Following on from its launch, the branch has also opened a number of vacancies for people looking for a role in their local community, supporting people to live independently with great quality of life. n For more information about the support that Helping Hands can provide, or if you are interested in working for the company please contact Petra on: 01905 676 981 or visit the website: www.helpinghands.co.uk

KEEPING ACTIVE Start / Finish: The Walk starts near ‘The Dolphin Inn’ at Bishampton (five miles NE of town of Pershore). Public Transport: The nearest Railway Station is at Pershore with occasional buses to ‘The Dolphin Inn at Bishampton. Consult ‘Traveline’. You may need to walk approx. 4 miles to start the walk at Throckmorton Village Hall (point 3), cycle to Bishampton or book taxi. Parking: Please street park sensitively and not by Church or School. O/S Maps: Explorer Maps 204 and 205 will suffice. The sketch map has been drawn to cover parts of three maps to include Pershore Station

Bishampton and Throckmorton

Circular Walk

Distance: 6 miles. Shorter 4 mile route shown on sketch-map. Time: Allow all day to do the main walk to fully enjoy the countryside. Refreshments: You will need a picnic and drinks. There is an excellent village shop at Bishampton that can provide food and drinks. The Dolphin Village Pub and Reastaurant will do its best to cater for the needs of organised ‘Walking Groups’ if telephoned in advance (01386) 462343. ‘The Vale Golf Club’ is also able to provide tea and coffee to passing walkers. Organised groups please telephone (01386) 462781. Terrain: This walk is gently undulating with a few gradual climbs. There are stiles, kissing gates, footbridges, steps and some necessary lane walking. Boots are recommended due to uneven paths and muddy areas. Poles are useful to clear route in places. Paths generally good. Please keep dogs on leads across farmland and through livestock – caution amongst cows with young. History: This walk goes through some beautiful countryside with historic barns, timber-framed buildings, moated manor-houses and old village churches. The nearby high ground to the east is ‘The Lenches’.

1. The walk starts near Bishampton Church. Walk southwards through the village of Bishampton with its pretty cottages. Those who travel by bus will join in at ‘The Dolphin Inn’. 2. At southern end of village (currently at end of houses), a footpath crosses the lane. (Note: Short walk turns left and goes straight until you reach a bridleway near point 5 where you re-join main walk.) Those on main walk need to turn right at point 2. This cuts off the corner. After crossing foot-bridge you rejoin lane briefly then turn right. Follow lane left round next corner with care to footpath on right that later forks left past Moat from old Manor House and comes out at Throckmorton Church. Walk to left of Church and path brings you out at Village Hall in Throckmorton. 3. At road junction turn left and walk to driveway on left leading to Court Farm. Go through gate to left of cattle-grid and walk up drive, past pond veering left through farm buildings then due east for ½ mile to a bridleway. 4. Turn left passing woodland on left. Ignore left fork staying on bridleway until you reach ‘crossroads’ in paths where ‘shorter walk joins in from left. Go through gate and turn right. 5. After 150 yards turn right through kissing-gate in hedge to walk diagonally ‘left’ (south-eastwards) across two fields via another kissing-gate and planked footbridge towards ‘Hayes Farm’. Just beyond farm, the path continues diagonally across field to exit in private garden onto lane opposite entrance to Vale Golf Club. 6. Walk down drive towards Vale Golf Club House passing fishing lakes to turn right at Club-House entrance over stile and around right-hand edge of modern building. At far side, (watch out for flying golf-balls) follow line of white posts that lead along track heading ‘eastwards’ straight up hill and through woodland onto ‘Bishampton Bank’. 7. At top, turn left, up steps and through kissing-gate and almost immediately left through another gate. After ¼ mile, go over stile through hedge and across to woodland walking just inside woodland for one mile to exit on lane that leads uphill towards ‘Ab Lench’. n 34 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 190 | July 2019

8. Walk up lane for short distance to bridleway on left that leads down to ‘Lower Barn Farm’. 9. Turn left and walk along lane to junction from left. On right take footpath through kissing-gate and walk along left side of field to large gate then take kissing gate on left. Go left and walk with hedge on left beneath wires. Go through small metal gate and cross to another one. Cross planked footbridge and continue through wooden kissing-gate and across marked footpath through crop, beneath more wires and along edges of several more fields in straight line to exit in Bishampton. 10. Turn right along lane to stile into field on left and up to Church or cross lane and go straight ahead then turn right up Church Lane where the walk ends. ‘The Dolphin Inn’ is ¼ mile south. n Written and illustrated by Glynis Dray
