Ladybird © Rachel Scopes

Our Lady`s bird

Ladybird ladybird, fly away home... a rhyme that most of us can recite. I remember falling in love with these bright, rotund little critters when I was little – they were all girls (ladies, in fact) and they’d happily bumble around on my hand if I could persuade them to hop on.

I

distinctly remember the day when I discovered they

doing what they normally do by the time you read this.

The collective noun for ladybirds is ‘a loveliness’ and these pretty beetles have been admired since the Middle Ages. They were originally referred to as ‘Our Lady’s Bird’ - in early paintings, the Virgin Mary wore a red cloak and our most common ladybird, the sevenspot, represented her seven joys and seven sorrows. The UK has more than 45 species of ladybird but only 26 of those are recognisable as the brightly coloured and spotty beetles we know and love. Fortunately they have easy to remember names – even if they’re not all easily found! Most are named after the number of spots found on their protective wing cases (or elytra) including two, four, seven, fourteen and even 24 spot ladybirds. Others have been named after the shape of their spots

But March usually sees many of our ladybirds coming out of hibernation. Once they’ve mated and eggs have been laid, the spiky, alien-looking larvae also feed on aphids before pupating; not only are they great to look at, it makes sense to attract them to your garden:

B They also feed on pollen and are partial to white and yellow flowers, particularly umbrella-shaped flowers like fennel, angelica and wild carrot as well as cosmos, calendula and coreopsis.

B Put away your chemical bug-killers B Try ‘companion’ planting (try colourful nasturtiums) to attract aphids away from your prize plants.

B Don’t forget to leave a bit of your garden ‘wild’ to give them plenty of safe places to lay their eggs.

schedules, late nights out and days spent on the beach can wreak havoc on your skin. This stress shows up in the form of dark circles, under-eye bags, and dull or puffy skin. Fine lines begin to creep up as early as your late 20s, so a quality skin care routine is key. Start with a glycolic acid based cleanser and an oil free moisturizer. Dr. Downie recommends a separate sunscreen with an SPF 30 or above, rain or shine, January through December, regardless of your ethnicity. Sunscreen only works if you reapply it every two hours, according to skincancer.org. Sun protection forms the foundation of any anti-aging skin-care plan, according to the American Academy of Dermatology and The Skin Cancer Foundation, as the sun's rays make our skin age more quickly - so regular use of daily sun protection is essential at all ages.

40s: Strengthen As you enter your 40s, your estrogen levels begin to change, resulting in dryer and thinner skin. Anti-aging products and creams with ingredients like retinoids and peptides are must-haves and always make sure to apply sunblock. Moisturize with serums containing growth factors and hyaluronic acid. Exfoliate - use a gentle face cleansing brush to help get rid of dead skin cells. Be sure to extend your skin care down to your neck and dĂŠcolletĂŠ (upper chest) area. There are specifically formulated products to soothe and ease discoloration in this area. While you work hard to care for your skin on the outside, add IMEDEEN Time Perfection. This age-adjusted anti-aging supplement formula helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, so add it to your daily routine to nourish your skin from within. Nourishment from within supports the whole body, including the back of hands and upper chest.

It`s never too early to start aging prevention. Hectic schedules, late nights out and days spent on the beach can wreak havoc on your skin

50s: Beyond Hydration and Prevention You should already be on a steady anti-aging regimen. As soon as you count 50 candles on your birthday cake, moisturizing should be your top skincare priority. Look for products with retinoids, peptides, alpha hydroxy and amino acids. You should be keeping vigilant with your sunscreen and moisturizers. You could always consider laser treatment surgery, Botox with filler or other non-invasive treatments. IMEDEEN Prime Renewal, the anti-aging skincare formula for women 50 and older, is a dietary supplement that helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and age spots as it protects and repairs the skin, stimulating collagen production, and is a convenient addition to your daily skin care regimen.

30s: Exfoliate Once you hit your 30s, your skin's natural exfoliation process begins to slow down. The growth factor in your skin also decreases. This means that you start to lose a teaspoon of collagen from your face every year by the time you are 30. Continue with your glycolic acid base cleanser. You also need an oil-free make up remover. Using an eye cream both day and night might help to increase moisture and suppleness around the eye area. Dr. Downie recommends a dual-pronged approach to help address some of the first signs of aging using topicals plus IMEDEEN Derma One, an anti-aging oral supplement that provides nutrients from within, targeted to the dermal skin layers

Most important, Dr. Downie reminds that true beauty comes from within, so embrace your age throughout your life. Try to avoid excessive sun exposure (and indoor tanning as these rays may accelerate skin aging,) moisturize daily and consider an anti-aging oral supplement. Exercise, eat healthy foods, don't forget to get enough sleep (it's called beauty rest for a reason) and if you smoke, stop. Follow this guide and take steps to shift you skincare routine throughout the decades to feel as beautiful as you look - both inside and out. www.imedeen.co.uk

METHOD: 1 Start by getting yourself organised, line a 30cm-20cm tray lined with baking parchment, and get a pan of water on the hob coming up to the boil. 2 For the toffee ice cream (this can be made the day before), put 125g of sugar in to a heavy based saucepan and place on a high heat, stirring constantly. In a separate pan warm up the cream, do not boil. Once the sugar has turned to an amber colour, add the cream and stir until well incorporated. 3 Separate the vanilla pod and place into a pan alongside the milk and bring to the boil, in a bowl whisk the egg yolks and the 100g of sugar. When the milk comes to the boil, pour over the egg mix and whisk well, transfer back into the pan and cook out on a medium heat until the mixture reaches 80째C or starts to thicken like a custard. 4 Then add the toffee mixture to the egg custard and incorporate well, transfer the ice cream base to the fridge and allow to cool. Once cold transfer to the ice cream churner and churn until mixture has thickened and began to freeze. Once at this stage, remove and place into a tub and relocate to the freezer and allow to fully freeze, (6-8 hours). 5 To make the honeycomb, get a cloth, a whisk and your pre-lined

tray ready to hand as you will have to work fast. Place all ingredients into a large heavy based saucepan except the bicarbonate of soda. Heat up over a high heat once it begins to heat up stir once just to ensure all ingredients are well incorporated. Bring up to 118째C. 6 Then add the bicarbonate of soda, whisk round 4-5 times (the mix will rise and will colour very quickly, and will be extremely hot so ensure you have good thick cloths and do this process away from children). Working quickly pour the mixture onto the pre-lined tray and place to one side to cool down to room temperature. 7 For the fondants place the butter and the chocolate into a metal/glass bowl and place over the pan of water you previously brought to the boil to create a bain-marie, stir occasionally until the mixture has melted. 8 Meanwhile, place the sugar the eggs and yolks into a bowl and whisk up until well incorporated. Once the chocolate mixture has melted remove from the heat and leave to stand for 10 minutes. 9 When slightly cooled add to the egg mixture mix ingredients well and then fold in the flour, set aside ready for later. 10 When the mixture has reached room temperature separate the mixture into 8 well floured moulds and place into the oven at 200째C for approx 7-10 minutes until the mix has started to rise with a warm and gooey consistency in the middle. 11 Break up the honeycomb into good sized chunks. 12 Whilst the fondants are cooking, peel the bananas and slice them in half length-ways. sprinkle with the caster sugar and blow torch until the banana becomes caramelised (this can also be achieved by putting the bananas under the grill). 13 Sprinkle the bananas with the small pieces of honeycomb from the bottom of the tray. 14 To plate, Set the fondant in the middle of the plate and organise your garnish around it. Finish the fondant off with a good scoop your home churned toffee ice cream. 15 If you have any ice cream left over this can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months. Also, if you have any leftover honeycomb this can placed into an airtight container and can be kept at room temperature for a few weeks.

keeping active Start/Finish: Walk starts/ends at the River Stour Bridge at Cookley. Public Transport: Nearest Railway Station at Kidderminster. Catch 9A bus from Oxford Street (stand near War Memorial) to Bulls Head, Cookley . Please check current timetables. Parking: There are parking spaces scattered around Cookley. Please respect residents and park sensitively. For those doing shorter walks, please park at Kingsford Car Park (see sketch map). O/S Map: Explorer Map 218 and Forest Trail leaflet downloadable from www.worcestershire.gov.uk/file/5222/kingsford_forest_park Distance: The main walk is approximately 5 miles from Cookley to Kingford Forest Park and back. Also a forest trail of about two miles. Time: Allow all day to do main walk. Shorter walk approx. 2 -3 hours. Refreshments: There are no cafes or eating places en route so please take a picnic and enjoy it along the way. There are picnic tables at the forest car park. (see sketch map) Terrain: Outward walk trends uphill and the return downhill. There are stiles, kiss-gates and steps which make the route unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Sturdy waterproof boots or comfortable ‘wellies’ are the order of the day in winter – a good ‘winter welly walk’! Poles are extremely useful as it can be very muddy in parts. History: The name ‘Kingsford’ is believed to have originated from the fact that King Charles I forded the river here when retreating from the Roundheads. Take time to explore the 200 acres of mature mixed woodland and heathland at Kingsford Forest Park.

1: From parking spot or bus-stop, making sure you have a picnic with you, walk downhill to road bridge over River Stour. Notice rock shelter carved in red sandstone. Continue uphill towards Caunsall, turning left. 2: On brow of hill, take footpath on right - beautiful old track with hedges both sides. After 1/3 mile take footpath on right (on clear day, extensive views with centre of Birmingham on skyline). At corner, cross stile into adjacent field. Path follows fence round to right then continues to stile at crossroads in paths. 3: Go straight on along North Worcestershire Path (NWP on map). Exit onto lane, turn right for short distance and left into forest. 4: Entering Kingsford Forest Park, take track through barrier. NWP with its ‘fir-cone’ symbol is well signed. There’s a network of tracks through forest that you can explore but this walk follows perimeter of 200 acre site and crosses Blakeshall Common. After 200 yards, fork right along track to car park and picnic area. Walk

continues northwards on NWP along ‘Horses’ route (eastern edge of Forest Park), passing Kinver Edge Farm. Climb steadily up to cross-roads and straight on to Kinver Edge. 5: Those doing shorter ‘Forest Trails’ can park in car park near Kingsford with its information centre, picnic area, toilets and 4 forest trails available. (Download leaflet from Worcestershire County Council Website – see blue box above). Main walk turns left along NWP. At next major junction, keep on NWP to fork in routes and go left along main path, curving round to left with fenced off area on right. 6: Follow route round to right (horse trail goes left) and continue up to ‘T’ junction on ridge. Turn left and walk down long twisting valley to wide Forest Trail. 7: NWP goes left along ‘permissive’ route drifting gently upwards to ‘Blakeshall Common’. Path now drops down, taking NWP through barrier on left to sandy track where you need to turn right and uphill for a short distance out of Kingsford Forest Park and alongside red sandstone boundary wall of Blakeshall Hall to exit into lane on crown of hill. 8: Turn left and walk down lane* to another junction where you turn right. (Note: Victorian Letter box on corner). Winter walk turns left opposite old Blakeshall Farm and goes down lane for 1/3 mile. (*In ‘dry’ season you can walk straight on to footpath on outside corner, walk along right side of valley down to stile at Debdale Farm then turn right beyond farm to Debdale Bridge at point 10). 9: Turn right through small wooden gate. Cross several fields via kiss-gates (hedge on right) with lovely views southwards towards Malvern Hills. Cross track, through kiss-gate and down steep steps onto riverside. Turn right and walk to Debdale Bridge. 10: Go over bridge to canal, turn left over another footbridge and on through Cookley Tunnel. Walk up steps on left and turn left along path up to main road. It is now down hill to River Bridge or uphill to village centre. Written and illustrated by glynis dray

the history of croome There’s more than meets the eye at Croome near Worcester which includes a vast ‘Capability’ Brown landscape park, a mansion house at its heart and even a 1940s visitor centre and wartime museum to visit. The whole place has been transformed over the last 20 years by the National Trust’s team of dedicated staff and volunteers. commemorates the war-winning efforts of the RAF Defford team. Some incredibly personal stories are shared, as well as the work of the “boffins” in the laboratories. Outside, the extensive parkland was created over 250 years ago and is one of the grandest of English landscape designs in the country. It was the first complete landscape design of the legendary architect and landscape designer Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, so called due to his habit of telling estate owners that their land had “capabilities”. His design at Croome was remodelled from a formal garden and marshland. It incorporated naturalistic planting, classical-style

and after the 6th Earl inherited Croome, he set about putting them into action. His aim was to turn Croome into an icon of fashion and sought the first and the best of everything that he admired. He commissioned both ‘Capability’ Brown and architect Robert Adam at the start of their careers and added finishing touches with the help of James Wyatt in the late 1790s and early 1800s. The 6th Earl married Maria Gunning, a great 18th century beauty and socialite. Unfortunately, Maria died at only 29 years old from tuberculosis brought on through her weakened immune system that had been ravaged by the use of the popular white lead based makeup. The Earl then married Barbara St. John, who he considered his soul mate. They had much in common, preferring the country to the bustle of London. She encouraged his obsession with collecting of new plants for the park, from across the globe. In the redesign of Croome Court, the 6th Earl used up and coming artists and craftspeople to create something entirely

From March, visitors can explore all four floors of the house which reveals its eclectic history including the 20th century when Croome’s ownership passed from a boys Catholic school to Hare Krishna devotees and later several property developers who tried to turn the house into hotels and country clubs. This year the house sees the long-awaited return of a fifth of the Coventry collection saved from the 1948 auction of the house and furniture. From May, some of the treasures from the collection go on display in a completely unique way. From July 9th, Grayson Perry’s ‘Vanity of Small Differences’ tapestries will be exhibited for two months until September 11th which continues the exploration of Croome’s lost tapestries. This year is also the 300th birthday of ‘Capability’ Brown and Croome hosts a range of events to celebrate this special year including a commemorative exhibition in the house from late September.

Visiting bromsgrove & redditch Visit beautiful Bromsgrove District for a taste of the countryside that inspired the poetry of A E Housman or Redditch, a surprise waiting for you in the beautiful Worcestershire countryside, just 14 miles from Birmingham.

BROMSGROVE The swathes of green belt provide a different world on the doorstep of the West Midlands conurbations, from the Lickey to the Clent hills with historic Bromsgrove town in the middle. The old town had a new lease of life recently, with a brand new heritage-grade High Street overlooked by the famous statue of A E Housman, and there’s plenty for visitors to enjoy. The town’s two major attractions, Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings at one end and Artrix theatre at the other, highlight the mixture of the old and the new. Avoncroft, with its preserved collection of fascinating old buildings from all over the area, is the perfect choice for a town that birthed the Bromsgrove Guild of Craftsmen, the influential Victorian craft guild that made the gates of Buckingham Palace and Liverpool’s liver birds, and that once made 90% of all the world’s nails. Meanwhile at the other end of town, the thoroughly modern 300-seat arts and theatre venue Artrix sits in the centre of the community and hosts top acts, shows and films every week. Between the two main attractions the town’s High

march & april events in bromsgrove & redditch Sew Small saturday 12th march - sunday 24th april forge mill needle museum See the exquisite skills of the Miniature Needlework Society International’s tiny creations at this new exhibition. Featuring a specially-made furnished doll’s house complete with a stunningly stitched garden, these perfect demonstrations of outstanding craftsmanship showcase a variety of techniques including lace making, tatting, crochet, and embroidery.

Street is home to its 800-year-old market three days a week, and is the focal point for events including regular summer street theatre and the popular Bromsgrove Festival. Last year’s festival saw the legendary French troupe Transe Express draw crowds with their extreme high wire trapeze and percussion in amongst the historic buildings - look out for more this summer. Redditch With the town’s Kingfisher Shopping Centre among the top ten shopping centres nationwide, it’s no wonder so many come to shop and visit. Redditch was reborn in 1964 when its new centres, homes and roads were all planned alongside an estimated five million trees in a wealth of green spaces and beautiful landscapes as it became a New Town. It continues to celebrate its world-renowned needle making industry, preserved at the Forge Mill Needle Museum next to the remains of the 12th century monastic Bordesley Abbey, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. As a large new town with a younger than average population, there are a wide range of vibrant facilities in Redditch from the award-winning Arrow Valley Country Park and sailing lake just a short distance from the town centre to a municipal golf course, major leisure centres, and the famous Palace Theatre on Alcester Street. The Edwardian Palace Theatre, recently modernised but sensitively preserved, plays a vital role at the centre of the town’s arts and culture scene. Legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham was born in Redditch and he’s just one of the figures you will find adorning some of the town’s many and varied public artworks. From Eduardo Paolozzi’s huge mosaics in the Kingfisher Centre to the giant needles that run stitches through the town centre, the town’s artistic riches are on public display wherever you look.

St George’s day and HM The Queen’s birthday saturday 23rd april Bromsgrove High Street There will be a vintage feel to a St George’s day event in Bromsgrove High Street, where the town will also celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.
