THE LATEST NEWS FROM YOUR AREA THREE MONTHS OF CHALLENGES FOR 30 YEARS OF SAVING LIVES A national charity based in Evesham supporting women with pre-eclampsia is celebrating its 30th birthday with a series of fundraising events. They are inviting you to take part in a birthday fundraising challenge around the theme of 30! Action on Pre-eclampsia (APEC) aims to raise awareness, improve care and provide support to mums, families and health care professionals. We receive no statutory funding and are mainly supported by kind donations from the public. Pre-eclampsia is a condition in pregnancy which causes the death of 1000 babies a year in the UK as well as up to 10 mums. Pre-eclampsia is caused by a defect in the placenta, which joins the mother and baby and supplies the baby with nutrients and oxygen from the mother’s blood.

For 30 years we have supported research into finding a cure for pre-eclampsia. For 10 of those 30 years, we’ve been based in Evesham and we are asking our local community to come together and take up a small challenge this spring or a big challenge this autumn.”

MUSEUM OF ROYAL WORCESTER LAUNCHES OPERATION DEFROST THE MUSEUM! The Museum of Royal Worcester cares for and celebrates 250 years of porcelain heritage. There are some things though, that don’t improve with age and its front doors are one of them. The heavy old doors are draughty, awkward and temperamental. They’re of an age where replacement parts are no longer available and dreaded energy bills are creeping ever skyward. The Museum wants to retire its old front doors and replace them with a new quality disability-friendly entrance that will not only improve energy efficiency, but also help make the stunning collections more accessible to all, including wheelchair users and families with pushchairs. n 4 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 217 | May 2022
Museum Director, Sophie Heath said ‘The Museum in Severn Street really is one of Worcester’s Gems. Our staff and volunteers agree it is a pleasure to spend time in our historic building (a former Victorian school house), and welcome visitors to enjoy the stories of the people behind the porcelain. But our Frontof-House team have started to complain of a breeze up their garters and a chill on their nose and have taken to wearing thermal underwear and woollen hats. Please support us with Operation Defrost the Museum, if you can, so we can raise the final 30% needed for the new front doors to keep staff and visitors snug.’ The Museum have already managed to raise
70% towards the new doors with grants from Edward Cadbury Charitable Trust and The Hobson Charity. Worcester firm, Joseph Woods builders have agreed the specification and undertaken final measurements on site ready to place the doors on order. Their newly launched #DefrostTheMuseum Crowdfunding Campaign invites local residents, former workers, trusts and foundation and supporters in the UK and across the globe, to donate the final 30% needed by visiting the museum website www.museumofroyalworcester. org or www.donorbox.org/operation-defrostthe-museum Staff have come up with a range of special gifts to thank donors for their support. n

HOW TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE
WITH YOUR FASHION environmental footprint and the biggest impact is from “Fast Fashion”, with just too many clothes being made and thrown away quickly; 11 million items are binned each week in the UK alone! 5. Clothes repair: Most holes, tears, buttons and zips on our clothes can be fixed – with a little know-how! Repairing our clothes is a great way to keep them in use. Swallow © Chris Gomersall
s w o ll a w S g in y l F h Hig We used to think that they spent winter in the mud at the bottom of lakes. Now we know better... The saying goes that one swallow does not a summer make but seeing my first swallow of the year, usually in April, makes my heart sing. Our chattering friends have returned from their winter sun and will brighten up our skies for the next few months. We once knew very little about where birds went during winter but in the early 20th century a small metal ring was fitted to the leg of a swallow – the bird was discovered in South Africa 18 months later. Whilst ringing is still used we now have satellite tracking systems and our knowledge of birds’ migration is growing every year. Take swallows as an example. Each spring and autumn they make an epic journey in order to maximise their opportunity for staying alive. Migration is mind-blowing when you think about it – a swallow weighs about 20g (about the same weight as a fun size chocolate bar) and flies 6000 miles twice a year. The journey is fraught with dangers from weather systems to illegal hunting. The journey takes them up to six weeks and they fly almost non-stop, occasionally pausing to refuel.

bodies or meadows and farmlands to hunt for insects, which they catch as they fly at speeds up to 35mph. Whilst swallow numbers are not declining at the rates of some of our other birds, we can still help to give them a boost. If you’ve got an outbuilding, why not leave a small opening for them? It could be a window or even a door - it only needs to be 50mm high and 200mm wide – that will allow them to access the upper area of the building and make a nest of mud with a feather and straw lining. They’ll also need somewhere to collect that mud so if we have a particularly dry spring and summer, why not overwater a patch of flower bed or even create a small bog garden? They also need plenty to eat so if you’re able to make your garden or local community greenspace as insectfriendly as possible – leaving an area of lawn uncut, planting lots of nectar and pollen rich plants, creating a log pile in a shady area – you’ll really be helping all our wildlife. Wild About Gardens is a collaboration between The Wildlife Trusts and Royal Horticultural Society and is focusing this year on helping our high-flying birds – swallows, house martins, swifts and sand martins. Six Health Conditions an Eye Exam Can Reveal Dr Andy Hepworth from optical lens specialists Essilor.co.uk explains what eye examinations can reveal beyond short or long sightedness and common eye conditions.
“TV Celebrity Sue Perkins recently revealed that her father was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour as a result of an eye examination at an optician. This is one example of why it’s vital for people to get their eyes checked regularly by a professional, at least within the recommended timeframe of every two years minimum, even if your vision seems fine. “Eyes are like a magnifying glass into the inner workings of our blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues throughout the body. So eye examinations are an important health check for overall wellbeing – and a potential way to identify an underlying potentially lifethreatening issues.

What will an optician test for and check (beyond long and short sightedness)? “A close inspection of the lens, retina and optic nerve can reveal a host of disorders, high blood pressure and diabetes among them, even if the patient feels fine and shows no other symptoms. “There are lots of age-related eye conditions, including cataracts and glaucoma, that an eye examination can also identify at an early stage - so it is crucial to get your eyes test regularly, especially as you get older. “Many opticians will carry out an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan as part of the eye examination. OCT technology uses light waves to take images of your retina; similar to how an ultrasound scan uses sound waves. During an OCT scan, you will be asked to sit in front of a small machine with your chin placed on a support. The instrument then takes a picture of your eyes, revealing to the optician what is going on beneath the surface of the eye. They will review this information as part of your eye examination. “An optician will also ask you questions about your general health in order to build up an overall picture if your lifestyle and any issues they should be aware of. “Other common stages of an eye exam include tonometry test – this uses puffs of air to measure pressure inside your eye, again this can help to identify any early signs of glaucoma. A slit lamp is used to check the health of your cornea, your iris and your lens. Your optician will use a powerful microscope to assess each eye.
“The sight part of the test is known as refraction – this is where the optician will ask you to read letters on a chart in front of you whilst different lenses are out in front of your eyes to fine tune your prescription. What should prompt you to go for an eye test - bearing in mind this may not be just for sight, but if you are worried about anything else? “If you are experiencing any changes to your vision or pain, redness and discomfort for more than a couple of days then you should get your eyes tested. Symptoms such as eye pain, burning, blurred / double vision, floaters with flashing lights and droopy eyelids could all be signs that something isn’t right. “Redness and irritation are often an early warning signal that your eyes could do with a bit more looking after. This can be caused by a range of factors including fatigue, allergies, over-wearing contact lenses or an infection such as conjunctivitis. Your option can advise and recommend treatment if it’s needed. “Headaches could also be a sign that you need to pay your eyes some attention – eye strain (either from an outdated prescription or too much time spent looking at a screen), can lead to headaches. If you are experiencing headaches regularly it can be easy to overlook eyes as the root cause. “It really is important to book an eye examination if anything at all is concerning you. n For more advice visit www.essilor.co.uk

WEDDINGS
Choosing the Perfect Wedding Venue You can’t have a wedding without a venue to host the event, which is why understanding how to select a wedding venue is a crucial component of your wedding planning. Every couple have their own image of perfection. Nothing is right for every couple, but it must be right for you. It can be a simple as a house reception in your own garden to a formal event at a stately home. So, before you are too far into your plans – the venue should be settled on. Simply put, your wedding venue is the place where your wedding takes place. Some venues host both the couple’s ceremony and reception, while other couples opt for two wedding venues, one for the wedding ceremony

what type of space you need for your big day and what options are available to you for your wedding day. Understand Your Own Vibe Without an understanding of the style and aesthetic you’re dreaming of, you won’t be able to find a venue that aligns with your plans. If you’re hoping to have an ultra-glam wedding, then a rustic tepee may not be the way to go. Conversely, a classic hotel or art museum won’t be a fit if you and your partner love the outdoors and want your guests to dine under the stars. Understand the Types of Venues Available and What’s Included Some wedding venues are all-inclusive - they are both a ceremony and reception venue,
plus they provide rentals, catering, and décor. However, some venue’s offering just a blank slate where you’ll need to bring in many of your own rentals or purchases (many outdoor venues fall under this category). Know Your Guest List Without a clear understanding of your guest count, you won’t be able to adequately select a wedding venue that can accommodate your number of guests. Imagine booking a small and intimate space, only to discover later that your guest count is going to be close to 300 people. important to settle on the number of guests you plan to invite prior to a final decision about your wedding venue. It is your Day but Consider the Guests’ Experience From the time they arrive until they depart at the end of the night, what will the guests’ experience be like? From temperature concerns, accessibility for older guests to the presence of easy-to-find toilet facilities, think of the things that will make being a guest at your wedding a comfortable and seamless experience. Tour Potential Venues Site visits, ideally with your wedding planner in tow, are always a good idea. If you book a wedding venue unseen, you may run into surprise later that you would’ve been made aware of had you simply booked a site visit.
Consider Parking and Accommodation Options Do you have a lot of guests that do not live locally? If so, distance from a potential venue to hotels and other accommodations needs to be considered. Additionally, the general accessibility of the venue should be thought through. If it’s a farm that only have a long dirt driveway, how will guests get to the venue? Will you offer shuttles or will guests be able to drive and park? The flow of the night, from arrival to departure, should be thought through at length. Here is a list of things you need to consider before approaching any venue. • Budget • Date • Style

Questions to Ask Your Wedding Venue During the Tour • How many people does the space accommodate? • What’s the walking/driving distance from the ceremony location? • Is the venue near guest hotels, and can you recommend any? • Is public transportation an option? • What kinds of services do you offer? • What’s your outdoor space like? • How many hours does our rental fee cover? • What kinds of restrictions do you have? • How many weddings do you allow within a day? • What’s your deposit/cancellation/ refund policy? • Are there any additional fees we should be aware of? • Do you have liability insurance? n

How can a debt adviser help me? A debt adviser will help you come up with a budget and a plan to pay back your debts. They will advise you on how to contact your creditors to arrange repayments. Some advisers will negotiate with your creditors for you. Below are some things your debt adviser may discuss with you: • your income and expenses so the adviser can help you complete a budget. • your circumstances, such as whether you own your home, so they can understand your personal situation and discuss what options might suit you best. • your debts and creditors so they can advise you on the options for dealing with them. • all your options and identify what steps to take next. The following information is helpful for your debt adviser so try to have these on hand before you speak or see one: bank statements for the past 3 months; how much you owe and to whom; any letters or demands from your creditors; how old your debts are. What debts should I pay off first? Be open with your debt adviser about all your debts so that he or she can help you to prioritise them, as not all debts are the same. Some debts, called ‘priority debts’, can lead to serious trouble if they aren’t paid. For example, if you don’t pay your mortgage, your home could be repossessed. Priority debts include: mortgage; rent; Council Tax; gas or electricity; water; and unpaid fines. Don’t panic if you’re behind on these bills. Seek advice as soon as possible so that you and your debt adviser can work out a plan of action to repay the money. Can my energy be cut off if I can’t pay my gas or electricity bills? If you don’t pay your gas or electricity bill
within 28 days, your energy supply could be cut off. However, it can’t be cut off without notice and your gas or energy company must send you a warning letter. If everyone in your home is of pension age, they can’t cut off your energy supply between 1 October and 31 March. LIVING HISTORY
A County of Musical Minds
Worcestershire can be described as a musical County, especially with one of the greatest composers in history being born in a simple cottage in Lower Broadheath. Sir Edward Elgar is one the Counties most famous sons. However, there is another composer that was on the scene before Elgar and, in some circles, said to be the more famous.
reparation of Mr Organist’s house, ruined by canon shot.’ The Civil Wars caused great sadness to Thomas, especially when the Cathedral was damaged numerous times. The Bell Tower that stood separately on the North side of the Cathedral was dismantled! The doors to the Cathedral were closed and during the long siege of 1646 Thomas tried to save the organ by dismantling it and hiding it, piece by piece. This work was not necessary when the City surrendered that summer.
Thomas Tomkins is a name rarely mentioned in Worcestershire today. However he is one of the most distinguished Composers of Sacred and Secular Music and was also the organist at the prestigious Chapel Royal. He was born in 1572 in Wales, but came to Worcester and lived in College Green, on what was land previously occupied by the Benedictine Monastery who served the Priory. The area changed dramatically following the dissolution, with some of the land becoming housing.
The years that followed led to some great Compositions, including tributes to famous Royalists, included Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, executed in 1640 and the former Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud, executed in 1645.
Music ran in the Tomkins family and it is believed he studied music under the famous William Byrd. He was made a member of the Chapel Royal and left Magdalen College, Oxford in 1607 as a Bachelor of Music. In Worcester he became a Master of Choristers and played the Organ in the beautiful Cathedral. This led to him being given the responsibility of overseeing the building of a new organ in 1612. This new organ was built by Thomas Dallam and cost £381.2s.8d. An organ that was described as being one that would “rival any in the land”. His fine anthems and coronation music, led him to becoming ‘Composer of (the Kings) music in Ordinary.’ Unfortunately this post had been promised to another and he was removed from this post almost straight away! In 1627 Thomas lived at Number 9 College Green. A house described as having a “Hall, Kitchen, Buttery, 5 Chambers, a Garret and a High Turret or Study on the third floor, and the garden including a water pump, wood house and coal house’. This house still stands today but have seen some alterations. A blue plaque n 34 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 217 | May 2022
‘A sad pevan for these distracted times’ was written after the execution of King Charles I in 1649. However during the final years of the war and at the time of the Battle of Worcester in 1651, financial problems plagued his life. He was forced to leave Worcester and moved in with his son at Martin Hussintree.
was erected on this building a few years ago to commemorate Thomas. In 1642 the English Civil Wars began. It started with a small skirmish, just over two miles from his home, at Powick Bridge. From the very beginning Worcester saw damage caused by the armies of both sides! At first the Parliamentarians ransacked the Cathedral and began vandalising the fine Organ, which grieved Thomas greatly! A year later canon fire aimed at the soldiers on Castle Mound, behind Thomas’s house missed its target and hit his house destroying lots of his papers and newly composed music. Shortly after we see 4s and 4d was given ‘to the Mason for tiles, lime and work done in
He died in 1653, knowing only that the Monarchy was gone and this country was now a Republic, governed by Oliver Cromwell and his Generals. Oliver Cromwell died in 1658 and this pathed the way for the Restoration that took place in 1660. A time that Thomas would have rejoiced in and composed celebratory music for. n By Paul Harding, Discover History Facebook and YouTube - Discover History Instagram and Twitter -DiscoverHISTPH www.discover-history.co.uk Discover History is an award winning education and Living History Performance Company based in Worcester. working Nosworthy family farm. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle and boasting outstanding views of the surrounding county, the Nosworthy family have created an intimate, eccentric and family-friendly event unlike anything else in the UK. Boasting music, comedy and family entertainment, the team is delighted to be sharing the next wave of artists and performers joining the line-up for 2022. Creative Director Ella Nosworthy said: “The past two years have been so difficult for everyone, and what better way to shake off the cobwebs and celebrate the summer safely than by joining us for a proper good old dance at the farm. We absolutely cannot wait to welcome both returning and new Nozgoers to what we hope will be our best year n 46 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 217 | May 2022
yet. We’ve absolutely packed our line-up with big tunes, big laughs and big entertainment. I can’t wait to see you all there!”
Iconic dancefloor fillers Sister Sledge have been soundtracking parties, festivals and your stay at home playlists since the 70s. The multilead vocal group hailing from Philadelphia are responsible for some of the biggest dance anthems of all time. Joining them on the Orchard stage is the indomitable Andy C ft. Tonn Piper. An underground phenomenon, Andy C has made himself a household name with his infectious brand of drum and bass. Comedy is always a vital part of Nozstock, and in 2022 Bill Bailey will make history as the first comedian to take a headline slot on the Orchard stage. Be prepared for endless belly laughs and boogies. Speaking of belly laughs, making her Noz debut this year is Rosie Jones, armed with her uniquely dark, cheeky sense of humour.
