TTA AWARDS NIGHT A GREAT SUCCESS! On the evening of September 10th 2021 the tiling industry celebrated an “in person” get-together at the annual TTA Awards. This was the first industry gathering to have taken place for two years and there was a real sense of occasion and pleasure in being able to meet up for a celebration and enjoy a longanticipated catch-up and chat with friends and colleagues old and new. The Awards were held in a Covid-secure fashion, with all the recommended precautions taken. TTA would like to thank everyone who attended and who helped to make the evening safe and successful. The sold-out Awards night was held at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club, which was a great venue, and the evening was hosted once again by the ever-popular Kyran Bracken MBE. It was also a successful night for the TTA’s nominated charity Children Today. The fundraising draw raised a very impressive total of £1,600. n

WODYS Is Looking For New Members WODYS – Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society Youth Section – is seeking boys and girls aged 8 to 18 who have some experience of the theatre or who are interested in performing. The group, which over the years, has earned several awards for its performances at Worcester’s Swan Theatre has been unable to hold its annual auditions over the past two years because of the coronavirus pandemic. It is one of the leading musical theatre youth sections in the area with a normal membership of about 60 youngsters. WODYS producer and director, David Humphries, said: “We have performed some fantastic shows over the past 38 years – our Les Miserables (School Edition); Half a Sixpence; Seven Brides for Seven Brothers; Footloose and Back To The 80s all won NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) awards.

“Each year we play to full to capacity audiences at the Swan Theatre. We are hoping that Shrek The Musical will do the same next year, but we would like more members as many of the youngsters in the group or on the waiting list have now gone on to university or stage schools.” While several enthusiastic youngsters are auditioning to join the group later this month (Sept 25) WODYS would still like more members and so are holding more auditions in November. At WODYS annual shows they raise money for charity, usually for children in Worcestershire, and over the years have raised more than £26,000. Many WODYS youngsters have gone on to professional theatre work, including parts in Mamma Mia! Blood Brothers and Royal

Shakespeare Company productions while other members just find that WODYS gives them enjoyment, confidence and theatre skills while they are having fun. Anyone who is interested in performing and wants to join in the fun should email wodysmembership@hotmail.co.uk by Saturday, October 23. There will be an audition workshop on Saturday, November 6 at the group’s rehearsal rooms, St. Mary’s Hall, Northfield St, Worcester WR1 1NS and auditions will be held there on Saturday, November 13. Everyone who becomes a member of WODYS will be cast in Shrek The Musical - on from Tuesday, 2nd to Saturday, 6th August 2022 - after further auditions for parts. n For more information on WODYS please look at the website - wodys.com or visit – Facebook WODYS. worcester Community Organization

International Repair Day Computers, lamps, games and kettles are amongst the items that end up in landfill every year and with only 20% of electrical equipment being recycled, this is a shocking statistic, particularly when you consider the raw materials such as valuable metals and minerals that go into new electrical items. As part of the Government’s Environment Bill, due to receive its final reading in the autumn, the “right to repair” will be part of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation which will make manufacturers responsible for the whole product lifecycle. This includes ensuring that items are made in such a way that they can be easily repaired rather than disposed of and new ones bought. International Repair Day is a joint initiative of the Open Repair Alliance, celebrated every year on the third Saturday of October. This event celebrates the efforts of communities, individuals and businesses who are making repair possible. Repairing goods is an essential part of a circular economy. It helps keep valuable resources in use and reduces the volume of waste sent for recycling or landfill.

n 12 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 211 | October 2021

Worcestershire has six repair cafes’ including its longest established one in Malvern, which was the first in the county, when it was formed at the end of 2012. Each café meets every month and are always happy to receive repairs in return for a donation. You can drink tea and eat cake while your items are repaired. Some even offer a garden tool sharpening service. Each café diverts 1500kg of items out of the waste stream as well as keeping old skills alive. The Indoors, Outdoors As we adopt ‘greener’ shopping habits, diets and lifestyles, the boundaries between the indoors and out are becoming increasingly blurred, with the trend set to reach new heights this year. Interiors are transforming into jungle-like environments, while garden designs are now reflecting the styles and layouts of interior space, with separate areas to dine, entertain, relax and be active. Bigger, Bolder and Greener Statement plants and feature foliage are huge in all senses of the word, replacing soft furnishings throughout the home, as well as styling cafés, restaurants and other public spaces. Though bold and dramatic in their aesthetic; oversized plants also have cool and calming effects, helping create tranquil jungles throughout their living spaces. Leafy houseplants are bringing new dimensions to minimalist interiors while adding depth and texture to a neutral colour palette, often used as screens between open plan rooms. Where side-tables once stood and fireplaces sit empty, layered displays of greenery and lowlevel planted pots are now filling the spot. Cheese plants (Monstera deliciosa), kentia palms (Howea forsteriana), areca palms (Dypsis lutescens), rubber plants (Ficus elastica) and yuccas (Yucca elephantipes) are increasingly popular due to their interesting cut-out leaf designs, which have filtered through to home interiors and accessories as well as outdoor cushions and picnic crockery. Tropical and botanical styles continue to trend, with increased ranges of indoor palms, such as the elephant ear (Alocasia), banana plant (Musa), bird of paradise (Strelitzia), aspidistra (Aspidistra elatior) and fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata). Low maintenance and easily portable, these houseplants are often found in multiple rooms throughout the home. Room to Grow The garden often serves as a multi-functional space - a place to retreat and relax, as well as to entertain, grow fresh produce and for children to play. Gardeners are introducing subtle ways of differentiating between these areas to allow the many demands of the garden to coexist together, while making best use of the space. To create secluded spots within the garden, turn to plants as a way to screen from any prying eyes. Towering, upright grasses and fast-growing evergreen bamboos have seen a huge surge in sales, providing privacy while also evoking a sense of calm and order in the garden. n 16 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 211 | October 2021

The plants-as-furniture trend is also spurring a new demand for plants that create instant shade for patio space. Ornamental trees for patio pots, bamboo and fast-growing shrubs are increasingly popular. Sophisticated Styling Our gardens today are often smaller and yet much more important to us visually as a statement of our identity – a private space to enjoy as well as showcase to the world via social media. More than ever, people are using rugs, cushions, swing seats, solar lighting, sofas and other interior-style products to recreate home space outdoors. Gardens have become an extension of our homes – the ‘fifth room’ - with the style of our kitchens and living

rooms flowing effortlessly outdoors through the blurred boundaries of bi-fold doors. Outdoor Plant Gifting As the nation steers away from ‘single use’ items and towards more sustainable, long-lasting alternatives, the gift sector is welcoming some colourful new additions. The trend stems from the desire to achieve value for money and longevity with each purchase. When sourcing new plants, nearly a quarter of people claim ‘how long they will live’ to be the most important factor. These savvy, ecoconscious shoppers are behind the emerging trend for gifting outdoor plants – a relatively new concept following houseplant gifting and the more traditional cut-flower bouquets. n

NATURE NOTEBOOK

Common pipistrelle © Tom Marshall

Brilliant Bats As Halloween approaches and thoughts turn to creatures of the night, let’s bust some myths about our flying mammals... Adding their ‘wool’ to a cauldron along with eye of newt and toe of frog won’t provide magic. Bats don’t turn into Dracula. The saying ‘blind as a bat’ isn’t true and they won’t get caught in your hair. Our lack of knowledge about these mysterious creatures that emerge as the sun sets has manifested in myths and legends that we’re more familiar with than the animals themselves. Did you know, for example, that although they’re sometimes called flying mice, they’re genetically closer to humans than they are to mice? Or that common pipistrelles, often found in and around our houses, need to eat over 3000 insects in one night? Or that lesser horseshoes weigh about the same as a £1 coin? One thing you might know is that bats use their hearing to hunt food by using echolocation. This means that they emit a sound and use the return of its echo to ‘see’ what’s ahead of them, whether it’s the movement of an insect (target) or the size of your head (avoid). Each species of bat calls on a different frequency so if you have an electronic bat detector you’ll be able to hear them and be able to work out

our insects face extinction, largely because of loss of

n 18 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 211 | October 2021

habitat and the increased use of pesticides. Combine this decline of food with the destruction of roosting habitats and you can see that bats are in trouble. Whilst many species of bat like nothing better than snuggling up in a hole in a mature tree come sunrise, others will be more than happy making use of space under the tiles on your roof or in crevices in your brick work. Fortunately, bats are legally protected so anyone who wants to re-roof a house, renovate an old building or chop down a large tree should arrange for a survey to check for the bats before starting work. During summer, female bats need a warm place to raise their young – lofts and barns are often ideal. For bats to hibernate through winter, however, roosts need to have a cool temperature that remains constant and is protected from fluctuations in outside temperatures – disturbance during this phase can be fatal for bats – so cellars, caves and even defunct icehouses on large estates are often used. Although many of our nature reserves have plenty of natural roosting spaces for bats, we erect bat boxes in many places to help supplement these. You can also help bats at home – from providing plenty of flowers, shrubs and trees that attract insects to leaving space for them to roost on your house or putting up bat boxes under your eaves. Ten Reasons

To Take Up Yoga

Whether you’re looking to take up a new hobby, want to make positive changes to your health regime, or are simply looking for an excuse to get out of the house, yoga could be the solution you’ve been looking for. The ancient artform has been practiced since 3000 BC and studies estimate that there are currently around 300 million people practicing yoga worldwide. But what are the benefits? Is it really as good as it seems? To explain why yoga really is all that, Stephen Virtue, Fitness Experience Manager at Total Fitness, reveals 10 benefits of the practice that you might not know about, to help you decide if yoga is the one for you... Release Tension If you’ve ever found yourself with a sore back or aching shoulders, yoga could be the release you need. It offers a huge array of stretches to improve mobility and release tension throughout the body. Shoulder flossing is one example of a technique that most of us could benefit from implementing on a daily basis. This simple stretching technique mobilises the entire shoulder joint throughout its entire n 22 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 211 | October 2021

range of motion. It does this by freeing up space behind the joint - a heavily congested area associated with neck and thoracic spine stiffness if not managed correctly. Regular stretching improves flexibility which in turn reduces the chances of overuse injuries and injury through muscular strain. Maintaining a good level of flexibility will certainly help you stay healthy, not to mention independent, later in life. Boost Immunity If you’re prone to colds, headaches and sore throats then chances are you’re doing one, if not all, of the following; working long hours, not getting enough sleep, or burning the candle at both ends. Spending a little time each day practicing gentle yoga has been proven to lower stress levels, which in turn gives your body space to breathe and recover, instead of working around the clock. Deep breathing during yoga ensures enough oxygen is being sent to the parts of your body

that need it most, whilst many of the poses increase blood flow to the sinuses, helping to ease congestion. Increase Brain Function Studies have found that experiencing a meditative state through practicing yoga can thicken the cerebral cortex – the part of the brain that controls awareness, attention, memory, thoughts and language – when practiced over a long period of time. Exercising the brain through meditation in this way is shown to improve brain performance in those key cerebral cortex areas and aids learning new skills. So, in essence, yoga could actually make you smarter! Beat Bloating Ever wished there was a quick way to relieve bloating? Yoga poses can be used reduce bloating quickly and efficiently. Try lying on your back and hugging your knees into your chest to achieve a nice stretch and get that circulation moving.

higher temperature demands more energy and encourages the body to sweat more, which has fantastic detoxifying benefits as it removes toxins, grime and bacteria from the pores. It also stimulates blood flow to the skin cells which in turn gives the skin a natural, radiant glow.

Improve Breathing Humans aren’t evolved to be sat down for a significant part of our day and as such those of us who spend a lot of time seated are more prone to a collapsed posture, therefore not taking full breaths. Breathing deeply has a huge impact on our bodies and brains, so it’s important to ensure we’re doing it correctly. Practicing yoga stretches out the body, opening the chest area to allow for full, deep breaths and a healthy intake of oxygen. Practicing regularly strengthens the lungs and improves posture for a better quality of respiration, even when away from the mat. Breathing from the diaphragm - a technique practised within Yoga - has also been shown to unlock localised spinal stiffness.

Find a Style That Suits You If hot yoga isn’t your cup of tea then why not try one of many cooler practices of yoga. Alongside Bikram and Vinyasa there is also, Hatha yoga, which covers any style of yoga involving breathing and simple poses - this is a good one for beginners and those wanting to enter a relaxed state of mind. For something more energetic why not try Ashtanga or Power yoga? These are challenging forms of practice that will give your abs and core a good workout, but ultimately leave you feeling meditative. There are plenty of different types of yoga so you’re sure to find a style that suits your individual needs. Call into your local health club or gym to find out what yoga classes are available.

Sweat Out Impurities Sweating through exercise is a good way to cleanse the skin of nasties, so why not take it to the next level with hot yoga, like Bikram or Vinyasa, to up the ante? Practicing at a

Practice Mindfulness The 21st Century is fast-paced. We could all benefit from slowing down and taking a little time for ourselves here and there. Spending half an hour to an hour practicing yoga a few

n 24 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 211 | October 2021

times a week is a great way to slow down and be mindful of our surroundings. Yoga encourages those practicing to elongate the spine, open out the chest and breathe deeply and slowly to increase oxygen supply to the brain. Sitting and breathing in this way helps us to enter a mindful state, increasing attentiveness and reducing stress. Socialise Yoga classes are a great way to meet new people or commit to regular face-to-face time with friends. Practicing with a friend or meeting someone at your local class will help you commit to that regular exercise regime as it gives you a reason to not skip your practice - you can hold each other accountable for showing up to class each week. Yoga is for Everyone Historically, there has been a stigma surrounding yoga, with many believing it to be a woman’s activity. However, a recent study by Total Fitness concluded revealed that this sentiment is outdated and there is in fact a significant percentage of men who have practiced or would like to practice yoga – 34% to be exact. So, there you have it - grab a mat, get signed up and start your yoga journey. n

National Cholesterol Month How to lower your cholesterol levels

Eating a healthy diet and doing regular exercise can help lower the level of cholesterol in your blood. Adopting healthy habits, such as eating a healthy, balanced diet and keeping active, can also help prevent your cholesterol levels becoming high in the first place. It’s important to keep your cholesterol in check because high cholesterol levels increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. If you’re concerned about your cholesterol, talk to your GP. If you’re aged 40 to 74, you can get your cholesterol checked as part of an NHS Health Check. If your GP has advised you to change your diet to reduce your blood cholesterol, you should cut down on saturated fat and eat more fibre, including plenty of fruit and vegetables. Fats and cholesterol: Saturated and unsaturated fat There are 2 main types of fat: saturated and unsaturated. Eating too many foods high in saturated fat can raise the level of cholesterol in your blood. Most people in the UK eat too much saturated fat. Foods high in saturated fat include: • meat pies • sausages and fatty cuts of meat • butter, ghee and lard • cream • hard cheeses • cakes and biscuits • foods containing coconut or palm oil • Eating foods that contain unsaturated fat instead of saturated fat can actually help reduce cholesterol levels.

Fibre and cholesterol Eating plenty of fibre helps lower your risk of heart disease, and some high-fibre foods can help lower your cholesterol. Adults should aim for at least 30g of fibre a day. Aim to eat at least 5 portions of different fruit and vegetables a day. Foods containing cholesterol Some foods naturally contain cholesterol, called dietary cholesterol. Foods such as kidneys, eggs and prawns are higher in dietary cholesterol than other foods. Dietary cholesterol has much less of an effect on the level of cholesterol in your blood than the amount of saturated fat you eat does. If your GP has advised you to change your diet to reduce your blood cholesterol, the most important thing to do is to cut down on saturated fat. It’s also a good idea to increase your intake of fruit, vegetables and fibre.

Try to replace foods containing saturated fats with small amounts of foods high in unsaturated fats. Trans fats can also raise cholesterol levels. Trans fats can be found naturally in small amounts in some foods, such as animal products, including meat, milk and dairy foods. Artificial trans fats can be found in hydrogenated fat, so some processed foods, such as biscuits and cakes, can contain trans fats.In the UK, manufacturers and most of the supermarkets have reduced the amount of trans fats in their products. Most people in the UK do not eat a lot of trans fats, but you should keep checking food labels for hydrogenated fats or oils.

Get active An active lifestyle can also help lower your cholesterol level. Activities can range from walking and cycling to more vigorous exercise, such as running and energetic dancing. Doing 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity every week can improve your cholesterol levels. Moderate aerobic activity means you’re working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat. One way to tell whether you’re exercising at a moderate intensity is if you can still talk but cannot sing the words to a song. Read more about getting more active and achieving your recommended activity levels.

Reducing total fat Reducing the total amount of fat in your diet can also help reduce your risk of heart disease.

Cholesterol-lowering products If your doctor has told you that you have high cholesterol and you can lower it by changing your diet, there’s no need to buy special

n 26 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 211 | October 2021

products to lower your cholesterol. These products are not recommended by doctors and are no substitute for a healthy, balanced diet. There are foods specially designed to lower your cholesterol, such as certain dairy spreads and yoghurts containing added ingredients called plant sterols and stanols. There’s some evidence these ingredients may help reduce the cholesterol in your blood, but there’s no evidence they also reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke. These products are designed for people who already have high cholesterol, but it’s not essential to eat plant sterols or stanols to help manage your cholesterol. There may be other, simpler and less expensive changes you can make, such as eating a healthy, balanced diet and being more physically active. There are some groups of people these products are not suitable for, including children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you do eat foods designed to lower your cholesterol, read the label carefully. These foods need to be eaten every day and in the right amount, as having too much could be harmful. Statins Statins are medicines that can help lower your cholesterol. They’re usually offered to people who have been diagnosed with coronary heart disease or another cardiovascular disease, or whose personal or family medical history suggests they’re likely to develop it during the next 10 years. Over-the-counter statins If you have high cholesterol, you should talk to your GP about how you can lower it. People who need statins can be prescribed them, and your GP can also advise you on healthy lifestyle changes. Some pharmacies sell low-dose statins, which you can buy without a prescription, but they’re no substitute for lowering your cholesterol by eating a healthy, balanced diet and being active. Speak to your pharmacist if you’re considering over-the-counter statins. If you have high cholesterol and need statins, your GP will prescribe them and monitor how well they’re working. n For more information go to www.nhs.uk

LIVING HISTORY

A Symbol of Worcestershire Worcestershire could be called ‘The Fruitful County’. A county covered in orchards, providing everything from apples, pears, plums and cherries. In the spring the county explodes into colour as the beautiful blossom bursts out in the warm sunshine. By the summer, bees buzz around the ripening fruit waiting to be harvested later in the year. If you look into the past, you will see photographs, even early glass plate photographs of local orchards, numerous documents and letters record what fruit was being sold in the markets. A great many Chefs in more recent times have created tasty recipes using this bounty of fruit. Worcestershire has a long heritage of fruit growing. Orchards in the Teme Valley are known for cherries, the Vale of Evesham, for apples and in Pershore, pears have led to the unofficial title - ‘Pearshore!’ Of all this bounty, It is the pear that has come to literally ‘symbolise’ Worcestershire. On a cold, damp autumnal day on the 25th October 1415, a great French army made up of thousands of heavily armoured knights, sat astride their war horses. Across a ploughed field near Agincourt stood a small force of English and Welsh soldiers, predominantly on foot and many without armour! This ‘Band of Brothers’ as William Shakespeare would call them, were suffering from Dysentery after living off the land in bad weather. The famous warrior King - Henry V, was leading this small English army to reaffirm his rule over the French. His army had brought together men from all over England, including bowmen from Worcestershire. It is from this famous campaign that we get the first use of the pears as a symbol of Worcestershire. We know very little about the men who left Worcestershire to fight, but a poem written in the 17th Century mentions these men who stood facing the French below a banner displaying a pear tree “Wor’ster a pear tree laden with its fruit” The poem entitled ‘The Battaile of Agincourt’ was created by Michael Drayton. Michael was born near Nuneaton in Warwickshire and is believed to have been educated at Oxford. He rose to poetry fame in the Elizabethan era, with some of his work looking at famous n 34 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 211 | October 2021

historical events. This included the 15th Century Battle of Agincourt. The source for this poem and in particular the descriptions of the combatant’s livery come from stories passed through time. Later in history three pears were adopted to symbolise Worcestershire. Legend has it that the three pears comes from the visit of Elizabeth I in 1575. She travelled across the county that summer and saw a multitude of fruit trees, heavily laden with fruit. The fruit was then gifted as symbol to be used in the future. Today they can be seen on the Coat of Arms for Worcester City. Numerous pubs take on the name, a popular jogging club wear pear tabards and a local tree surgeon has adopted the badge. One of the most famous users of the badge is Worcestershire County Cricket Club. More fitting is the Worcester Bowmen Archery Club, who have really embraced the heritage of our great County. This popular club has been in existence since 2002 and continues to practice shooting the bow, just as our ancestors had to by law in the Middle Ages. The type of pear shown in these symbols is generally the Worcester Black Pear or

Parkinson Warden pear. It may have been introduced to the County by the Romans and is used for cooking, as it never really ripens. It is probably for this reason that the pears were seen by the Queen and were not being picked and eaten straight from the tree. County

Worcestershire Hussars or the Worcestershire Yeomanry, as they are often referred to, began to use pear blossom as their Regimental badge. One of the most precious Pear Blossom items is the famous Jewel owned by this Regiment. It was crafted by Faberge to commemorate the Regiment’s action in the Boer War. It was valued on the Antiques Road Show in more recent times, at £1 million. n By Paul Harding Discover History Facebook and YouTube - Discover History Instagram and Twitter -DiscoverHISTPH www.discover-history.co.uk
