On Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th, Whitlenge Gardens is open specifically for the NGS. GETTING A MORTGAGE After the last recession, rules for obtaining a mortgage were tightened, but there are still some good deals to be had.
I
n the 1980’s many people bought their house with an endowment mortgage which involved taking out a loan and covering it with an investment policy which would cover the mortgage loan and pay a bonus on maturity. Unfortunately due to changing market fortunes and these investments not paying out the promised amount, many
people were left with a shortfall and a debt to cover. Now there are many more checks and balances to ensure this cannot happen and homebuyers are not loaned more than they can pay back. With house prices escalating at the beginning of the 21st century, affordability is a problem particularly for first time buyers although prices have levelled out. A larger deposit is now needed forcing would be buyers to save longer or turn to the ‘bank of mum & dad’. Also many young people are coming out of university with a large student loan debt, so dreams of owning their own house are receding. There are options available.

The current popular choice seems to be a rural barn location where the civil ceremony takes place followed by a wedding breakfast after the photographs have been taken in beautiful grounds. The emphasis is on relaxed and natural with flowers having a countryside feel and where people are able to talk and mingle. Unique touches can be added to make your day special – a double decker bus as transport for the wedding party, an ice cream van for a cooling treat or a harpist to provide background music throughout the day. Worcestershire has a wide range of venues perfect for a wedding, the choice is yours! There are many websites that will give help and advice with every aspect of the planning or you can simply pass your ideas on to a trained wedding planner and sit back and enjoy it! BY JILL WARREN

understand maintenance needs of their buildings.
What is a maintenance co-operative?
Who is involved?
The idea is that people associated with places of worship of all denominations co-operate to survey their buildings, create a simple maintenance plan and then go on to plan and undertake the basic maintenance jobs. Training on issues associated with older solid wall buildings is part of the package as is guidance on how to carry out the baseline survey; everything else flows from this. Volunteers interested in old buildings and/or churches who want to do something practical in their local communities are also getting involved. What’s happened so far? So far, following on from launch meetings, we have delivered three packages of training, all free of charge to participants. The training has included Faith in Maintenance day courses, baseline assessment day courses, a history
We have five active co-ops in the area so far, in the Teme Valley, Droitwich, Kidderminster in Worcestershire and the Golden Valley and Bartestree Cross area in Herefordshire. Bredenbury Benefice near Bromyard will be getting underway soon. Other places of worship are very welcome to get involved. What could joining a co-op do for you? Places of worship are often complicated structures built over many phases in traditional building materials. They are not built in the same way as a modern house and do not behave like modern structures. Joining a co-op helps people to understand the issues of looking after their building and gives them the confidence to undertake basic tasks. The camaraderie is a bonus!

SENIOR LIVING
PREPARING FOR WINTER Cold weather can be a worry for those of us in later life. As we get older, our bodies respond differently and this can leave us more vulnerable in cold weather.
H
ere are some suggestions from Age UK regarding things you can do to stay safe and ward off the winter chills:

adequate ventilation. Never block air vents, and get your boiler serviced every 12 months by a gas engineer. If water pipes freeze they can burst, so make sure you know where the main stopcock is so you can turn off the water. Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm in each room that has a gas appliance. Make sure you claim all the financial support you can to help with heating bills. Dress in plenty of layers and make sure you have warm shoes or boots with non-slip soles. Keep a mixture of salt and sand handy to put on steps or paths in icy weather. Consider fitting a grab rail if you have steps at your front or back door. Keep simple cold, flu and sore throat remedies in the house. Follow up your GP’s invitation to have a flu jab. Order repeat prescriptions in plenty of time, particularly if bad weather is forecast. Keep basic food items in the cupboard or freezer in case it’s too cold to go shopping. You could also do your food shopping online and get it delivered to your door. Ask your family, neighbours or friends if they could call or visit you more often.

Why single sex education tops mixed sex schools The headmistress of independent girls’ school, Dodderhill School, Cate Mawston, would urge parents who are considering independent education to send their daughters to a girls only school. Mrs Mawston explains just what it is that sets single sex schools apart from mixed.
D
odderhill School, in Droitwich Spa, was placed firmly at the top of the local league tables in January this year. The tables show how Worcestershire’s secondary schools performed in the latest round of GCSE and A Level examinations. The results revealed that 92 per cent of Dodderhill’s pupils achieved five A* to C grades, including English and maths, ensuring it came out on top.
Mrs Mawston explains the reason that Dodderhill girls perform so well: “Dodderhill is the only girls’ school in the area. Many girls come here because they tell me that they are keen to learn, but feel that mixed sex schools detract from that. “What sets Dodderhill apart is our unique, bespoke approach to each and every girl. We adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of the student, not the other way around, which ensures that everyone is challenged at the appropriate level. “Our classes are deliberately small because we value the uniqueness of every individual child. As such our exam results are consistently amongst the best in Worcestershire. It is not unusual for girls to take AS examinations with their GCSEs. The latest league table results demonstrate the success that our single sex education approach achieves.” Dodderhill School is opening its doors to welcome potential pupils and their families to pop in and see for themselves what makes it so special. Families are welcome to join Mrs Mawston and the team for a guided tour of the school and its extensive grounds, meet the teachers and see them in action. There are two open days taking place, the first is on Friday 9th October, between 10am & 12pm and 1.30 & 3pm. The second is on Saturday 10th October between 10am & 12pm. Mrs Mawston added: “We extend a warm invitation to you and your family to visit us and experience what makes Dodderhill School different. Our pupils have described Dodderhill School as ‘not just a school, but a family’ and a ‘second home’. “The best way to appreciate the ‘Dodderhill difference’ is to visit us on a normal school day. The unique Dodderhill community needs to be seen in action to be truly appreciated.” If you are unable to make either of the open days, feel free to give the school a call to arrange a personal visit. Dodderhill School provides continuity of education for girls from six weeks to seven years old. The classes have no more than 16 pupils each and there are not more than two classes per year group. This is to enable tutors to acknowledge the uniqueness of every child and focus on their individual achievement.
