If your collar is crisp, you don’t necessarily need to wear a tie. But if it’s a bit worn or grey, someone will notice. 5. Stay cool from 9 to 5 Man-made fabrics won’t do you any favours when it’s hot. Contact your local stylist to find out more. On the other hand, if you feel you’ve got to wear a suit, go for one in a lighter fabric and deeper colour. The suit itself will give you the right level of gravitas. It also means you won’t fall victim to Shiny Seat Syndrome. (Technical term.) You know, when the trouser part of your suit has been working overtime during the winter and is looking the worse for wear. Give it a well-earned break. 2. Oh, and here’s some science. It’s worth changing your antiperspirant occasionally. Once your body gets used to the chemicals in a particular brand, the deodorant becomes less effective over time. Back to work and how to dress for the job you want Whether we like it or not getting ahead in business is still about looking the part. But is your current professional look really… well, you? In a highly competitive world, how do you project authority and still express your individuality? Start with the dress code Each profession has its own dress code. That beautifully cut formal suit is perfect for a high-stakes presentation at a finance company. But it’s way out of step for a creative industry. You want to fit in - but also stand out. Why look identical to everyone else? You’ll be invisible. Once you know the dress code, you can start adding individuality. Colour is key. Again, each industry will vary but it’s best to avoid too much bright colour. It can sabotage your authority. Yes, we know... House of Colour has spent 30 years helping people to wear colour. What on earth are we talking about? Neutrals with a splash Never underestimate the power of neutrals. Your best dark neutral will project authority, then a splash of a Wow colour near the face will add memorability. Just a quick word about black… Are you a winter? Great! You may look fabulous in black. For everyone else, it emphasises dark circles and makes you look a bit tired. Also, it’s everywhere. You’ll create an instant impression by wearing a dark neutral that isn’t black. Go for quality… and consistency It’s not compulsory to spend a fortune. Quality is about cut, fabric, finish and fit. If it’s the right style and within your colour spectrum, a lower-budget item may not look cheap. Consistency is important – it’s guaranteed to create professional trust. But looking approachable is equally crucial. To be honest, lots of people tell us it’s the most difficult thing to balance. Casually powerful Do the words `dress down Friday’ fill you with dread?
40
ISSUE 170 WORCESTERSHIRE Now SEPTEMBER 2017
You’re not alone. Casual dressing at work is an authority-destroying minefield. And if you work in a creative industry, dress down Friday is every day. How do you get it right? It’s the neckline. OK, bear with us… here’s the history bit. A few hundred years ago a strict dress code, Sumptuary Law, dictated what each rank and class should wear. Neckwear indicated status. The higher classes wore ruffs and elaborate collars, the lower classes had bare necks. Today, we still unconsciously associate a high neckline with authority. Wearing a shirt and tie, covering the neck communicates power and authority. You can do the same thing with high-necked tops, scarves and jewellery. Dress upwards, move onwards Dress upwards - as though you’ve already achieved that promotion - and you’ll land it.

caterers: on-site (in-house) caterers and off-premises caterers. On-site caterers work within a particular facility and provide all catering services if you book your event with that facility. You will typically find on-site caterers at hotels, banquet halls and country houses. Off-premises caterers provide mobile catering services for events held at nearly any location, indoors or outdoors. If you find a reception facility with on-site catering service, be certain not to base your decision on location alone, as a beautiful locale will not be as fondly remembered if the food wasn’t to match. Always sample the catering menu.
Bridal Hair The first thing to consider when trying to choose a hair style for your big day is the tone of the event. For an informal daytime wedding, wearing your hair down is probably appropriate, while an up-do may be more suited to a formal evening occasion. It is also important to consider any veil or accessories you may plan to wear. Many brides choose to hire a specialist designer to style their hair on the day. This is advisable, as a professional will be able to provide advice about what looks good

Discuss your ideas prior to the wedding and make sure that you are both on the same page. Many brides opt for a natural look on their big day, although some prefer to go for a glamorous style. This option is becoming increasingly popular, which is logical. Often for special occasions, women will change their clothes, jewellery and accessories but not their make-up. keeping active
Start/Finish: The walk starts/ends at Bewdley River Bridge in Town Centre. Public Transport: The nearest railway station is at Kiddermiinster with regular buses and occasional steam trains to Bewdley. Please check timetables. Parking: There are large ‘pay’ riverside car parks at each end of the town. O/S Maps: Explorer 218. Distances: 5.5 miles (Shorter walk 2.5 miles). Time: 3-4 hours for main walk. (1.5 hours for shorter walk). Refreshments: Take a picnic or support Bewdley’s shops, cafes and pubs. Terrain: This ‘uphill’ and ‘down dale’ walk will take you out to the hamlet of Ribbesford. Georgian Bewdley with its historic riverside and town centre can be explored by ‘aided’ wheelchairs and pushchairs but the main walk is rural with kiss-gates, steps, steep woodland paths and stiles. Boots are advisable due to uneven sections and the potential for mud. Poles are useful to get through areas of summer growth near stiles and edges of fields. There are several hill-climbs but the views make them worthwhile. The walk goes through peripheral sections of the Wyre Forest and the area has produced much Oak timber over the years. The River Severn with its landmark ‘Blackstone Rock’ can be seen from the River Path near Bewdley. You will also notice outcrops of the distinctive red sandstone along the walk. Ribbesford Church along with the occasional cottage is built of this richly coloured stone. History: Bewdley with the Severn Valley Steam Railway is a popular town to visit. This walk takes you away from the madding crowd and puts you back in touch with nature. The Severn Valley Railway is a steam heritage line and you may hear the occasional ‘whistle’. Ribbesford has older origins than Bewdley with the church of St. Leonards harbouring Norman stone carvings above the doorway. The nearby ‘Home Farm’ and 19th century ‘Ribbesford House’ (No public access to these private apartments) make it an interesting hamlet to come across on the edge of the River Severn. The three-storey house was the country seat of Sir Henry Herbert in the 17th century and was built for him out of rendered red brick as a moated manor house with a drive of chestnut trees leading to a pair of gates. During World War II Ribbesford house was used as a base for the Free French Army under General de Gaulle. The view painted here was permitted by one of the residents to give the reader a better view of the house that can only be seen in part from the ‘right of way‘ along the drive. It has two landmark octagonal towers, a walled garden, remains of a circular moat and a ‘haha’. The painting has ‘restored’ the mansion to its former glory!

(museum on left). Walk to right of Church then cross with care to Park Lane beyond. Climb 120 yards to footpath between houses on left. Go through two gates into woodland turning left at fork for short walk (which crosses fields on waymarked ‘Worcestershire Way’ to Ribbesford Church near point 8) and right for main walk. Follow path round hillside, through narrow
fenced section, to exit at ‘Tickenhill Lodge’ near entrance to ‘Tickenhill Manor’. Turn left to Park Lane. 2: Turn left along Snuff Mill Lane for 30 yards to footpath between houses on right. The Snuff Mill used to be down in the dingle next to a stream and was originally a corn-mill with a reference as far back as 1336. It was converted to a snuff mill in 19th century and used as such until 1870 when machinery was changed to polish horn hair combs and ‘curry-combs’ for horses. The path crosses two modern roads and exits into a meadow on a hillside high up above the Severn Valley. The path goes up right side of meadow and through gap in hedge, across another path to continue straight on. Go over crown of hill and briefly down into ‘Park Dingle’ and up other side. Notice houses up on right. Remain on high land on a wide track, cross another path and continue straight until you reach a path that goes left down towards A456 just before you reach ‘Wharton Park Farm’. 3: Take this footpath down wide swathe of grass to track at bottom and turn right. At end, turn left along bank to A456 which you need to cross with great care. 4: Follow track down slope to ‘Wharton Park Fisheries’.Go through metal gate to stile into this area then walk diagonally left across a swathe of grass to a woodland path that will take you ½ mile up hillside on eastern side of Rock Coppice towards ‘Park End’. At top you reach a once more important ‘pack-horse’ (?) route that led through Wyre Forest. 5: Leave woodland to clip edge of ‘Wharton Park Golf-Course’ (proceed carefully and check with golfers). Follow metalled road to narrow footpath on right that leads through coppice and across golf course to ‘right of way’. Walk across several fields in straight line along well marked paths (taking short-cut to avoid road) to Heightington Lane. 6: Turn left along lane for ¾ mile to just past ‘Horsehill Farm’. 7: Follow footpath on right, marked ‘The Beeches’ across to hamlet of Ribbesford with Church (worth a peep), ‘Ribbesford House’ and Home Farm. 8: Follow lane ‘right’ to corner (no public access to Ribbesford House). Turn left and walk down ‘Chestnut’ drive to main road. Cross road with care and walk left for ¼ mile to where riverside path filters off just before road goes round a left curve. 9: Follow Riverside path as far as A456 viaduct. 10: Continue walking alongside River Severn and Bewdley’s attractive waterfront to old bridge, where walk ends. BEWDLEY – Ribbesford (Circular)
Worcester's Last Battle
T
he Commandery is a unique, Grade I listed building in Worcester- the very site of the Royalist army headquarters during the decisive Battle of Worcester
in 1651. The Commandery has born witness to the conflicts and successes of Worcester for over a thousand years. The City witnessed the opening and closing battles of the English Civil War, with the final bloody battle in the City centre concluding with a Parliamentarian victory on the 3 September 1651. The decisions made at this time changed the way that Great Britain was governed, creating the democracy we enjoy today. Originally founded as a monastic hospital in 1085 by Saint Wulfstan, then Bishop of Worcester, The Commandery was given a dramatic new purpose in 1651 when Charles II marched into Worcester at the head of 18,000 men and set up his Headquarters in the city, with the commander-in-chief the Duke of Hamilton billeted at The Commandery. Charles' Royalist army had marched from Sterling in Scotland to Worcester, covering 350 miles in just three weeks. When they arrived in Worcester the soldiers, most of whom were Scots who were very far from home, had no shoes and their clothes were in rags. They desperately looted the city – lead was stripped from the cathedral roof and from the coffins of the dead to make musket balls.
On the 3 September 1651, battle commenced at around noon with an attack from Oliver Cromwell's 28,000 strong 'New Model Army'. The battlefield covered a seven mile front from Powick to Red Hill, including the entire modern-day city centre. After several strategic gains, the Royalists quickly faltered and at the Sidbury Gate outside The Commandery a massive slaughter took place as soldiers tried to flee. A ceremony takes place on Fort Royal Hill every year on the 3 September to commemorate these soldiers' lives. The Duke of Hamilton was carried back into The Commandery with blood pouring from a wound in his leg, and he died five days later. It is said that Hamilton's body was hastily buried under The Commandery floor, before it was later taken to the cathedral. Charles II subsequently escaped from Worcester and fled into exile until his restoration to the throne nine years later. However, the Restoration Settlement did not give back to the King the absolute control over the government and military that monarchs had previously enjoyed.
made a speech declaring the City to be the very ground ‘where liberty was fought for and won’ and invoking local people to ‘Tell your Neighbours and your Children that this is holy Ground, much holier than that on which your Churches stand. All England should come in Pilgrimage to this Hill, once a Year.’ An entire wing of The Commandery opened this summer to tell Worcester's Civil War Story. Visitors can discover stories of intriguing characters, divided families, betrayal and military tactics that changed the course of the next 350 years of history through atmospheric film scenes, the sounds of arguing Royalist and Parliamentarian voices, weapons straight from the battlefield, the sights of opulent aristocratic life and the chance to try their hands at battle strategy as they consider which side they would choose. EDUCATION
Higher apprenticeships in England and Wales, provide an opportunity to gain a higher education qualification, with most apprentices gaining an NVQ Level 4, HND, or foundation degree. similar to higher apprenticeships, but differ in that they provide an opportunity to gain a full bachelor’s (Level 6) or master’s degree (Level 7). The courses are designed in partnership with employers, with part-time study taking place at a university or college. They can take between three to six years to complete, depending on the level of the course. At the moment, the scheme only operates across England and Wales, although applications may be made from all parts of the UK. Degree apprenticeships are new, so there are only a limited number of vacancies available at the moment. It is anticipated that the number of vacancies will grow over the next year or two, so if you decide a degree apprenticeship is the right choice for you, here are some tips to help you do your research: 1. Check out the range and number of vacancies being advertised in the area(s) you're interested in.

2. Check on a regular basis so you can get an idea of the availability of opportunities relevant to your interests. 3. What is the timeframe from the vacancy being advertised to the application deadline and apprenticeship start date? This will give you an idea of how you need to prepare, and how quickly you will need to apply. 4. Competition for apprenticeships can be tough — partly because there are often only a limited number of vacancies available, particularly on higher and the new degree level apprenticeships, but also because school/college leavers and adults already in employment will be able to apply to them too. Employers may also be considering applications from existing employees, who may be applying for apprenticeships for the career progression opportunities they can offer.

MUSIC AT SEVERN ARTS
A
t Severn Arts we believe passionately in the power of music and its importance to the broader education of all children. Our aim is to make every school in Worcestershire a musical
school - last year we worked, in some capacity, with over 90% of schools in the county to achieve this end. This included some fantastic project work, including our whole class First Access Music Education (FAME) programme, the Big Sing and the multi-arts Voices and Visions summer season of performances and exhibitions. At our core we offer instrumental and vocal tuition in schools. Within our highly trained team we have expertise in every instrument and genre. Ask at your school to find out what opportunities are available. We also have an instrument hire service available to pupils learning with Severn Arts. Outside of school we run a wide range of orchestras and bands at all levels. At our four Music Centres based in Bromsgrove, Kidderminster, Malvern and Worcester, pupils who are new to playing in an ensemble can try out their first term free of charge. More advanced players can join one of our county orchestras, and aspiring rock musicians can join one of our two rock schools – Severn Rocks – which meet in Evesham and Redditch.
