Green-fingered visitors are sure to enjoy the Grow Zone and Harvest Zone, where they will find visual floral feasts and sales, trade secrets and tips from renowned experts, and a celebration of the great British harvest highlighting the finest from the Three Counties’ orchards and hopyards. Not forgetting the CANNA UK National Giant Vegetables Championship, a world of gigantic legumes and enormous fruits. Last year alone, four new world records were broken for the heaviest marrow, aubergine and broad bean pod, and longest leek.

Last year’s winner was a proud lone hawthorn, which captured the public’s imagination for its defiance in guarding the Scottish coastline.

“The Kippford Leaning Tree” took the crown after a hugely competitive social media vote across the Trust’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

“The show really is a plantsman’s paradise, so whether you’re looking for inspiration for your own garden or allotment, or simply want to soak up the beautiful blooms, the Three Counties Showground is the place to be this September.”

If these beautiful ancient trees have inspired you, join our expert volunteers and help us map the oldest and most important trees in the UK on our Ancient Tree Inventory , so we can fight to keep them safe.

A real highlight is always the RHS Flower Show, which showcases the UK’s best nurseries and growers and their spectrum of specialist blooms, as they compete for the coveted gold medal from the RHS judges. Plus, there’s a chance to start planning next year’s spring pots and borders, with every kind of bulb, tuber and corm for sale, alongside expert advice to help your garden flourish.

WOODLAND TRUST REVEALS NOMINATIONS FOR UK’S TREE OF THE YEAR 2022

Five gargantuan oaks, one of which is said to have provided the inspiration for the fantasy land of Narnia, and a spectacular “portal rowan” are among the unique specimens in the running to be crowned the prestigious winner of the Woodland Trust’s Tree of the Year for 2022. Tree experts at the Woodland Trust and the public have selected a shortlist of 12 trees from around the UK, all which have all been recorded on the Trust’s ‘hall of fame’ for ancient trees, the Ancient Tree Inventory. The competition celebrates these living legends and our panel picked their favourites from an original cast of hundreds that were highlighted by eagle-eyed volunteers since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Voting is via the Woodland Trust website and is open until noon on Monday, 31 October, with the winner announced on Friday, November 4. Now in its eighth year, the Woodland Trust’s Tree of the Year competition highlights the importance of rare ancient and veteran trees, their role in fighting climate change and biodiversity loss in the UK, and why protecting them is vital for the future of the planet.

Fans of nostalgia can head back in time and relive the glory days in the Vintage Village and Rural Pursuits zones, where they will find vintage machinery displays, forgotten skills and rural crafts. Plus, a traditional tearoom serving up delights from the 40s and 50s era. Jane Edwards, Shows Manager, said: “The Malvern Autumn Show is a celebration of one of the most exciting and vibrant British seasons. We are delighted to bring back an amazing array of flowers, plants, experts, traditional skills, animals and food and drink from across our three counties – promising something for the whole family to enjoy.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner – and of course tasty treats – are all on offer, courtesy of a huge range of outstanding local suppliers in the Food & Drink Village. Plus, the Kitchen Theatre, the Gin Show sponsored by Ludlow Gin, Festival of Perry and Westons Cider Garden. All this, and so much more, promising an unforgettable family day out, with tickets costing just £18.85 per person, £17.85 for members and free of charge for children under 16. Many ancient trees, like this year’s entries, have no legal protection. But to protect them, we need to find them.

Over on the Family Green, there will be lots to entertain visitors both young and old, including free have-a-go activities such as pedal tractors and circus and bushcraft skills, a mini harvest festival, and animals aplenty, from dazzling dog displays in the Top Dogs Arena to the popular World of Animals featuring giant rabbits, alpacas, horses and more.

Special guests set to draw in crowds across the weekend include Gardener’s World’s own Arit Anderson, award-winning food writer Mark Diacono, floristry extraordinaire Jonathan Moseley, archeologist and TV presenter Jules Hudson and landscape designer and television favourite, Adam Frost.

Oaks also support more wildlife than any other native tree species in the UK, with 329 species depending solely on oak trees for survival. Tree of the Year celebrates these ‘cathedrals of nature’, but across the world our oldest, most valuable trees are being lost.

Fabulous flowers, food, drink and family fun will once again transform the Three Counties Showground with the return of the UK’s biggest Harvest Festival, the Malvern Autumn Show, on 23 – 25 September 2022. Set against the backdrop of Worcestershire’s glorious Malvern Hills, the three-day spectacular promises to celebrate the very best of the season, from giant crops and floral art to shopping, local ciders and tasty treats.

“Andy was so lovely and really took the time to share his experience and explain the different projects that I could support the team with. I knew immediately that St Richard’s would be the perfect charity to volunteer with.

n 6 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 221 | September 2022

There are currently two types of volunteer roles available, Family Support Volunteers and Community Volunteers.

St Richard’s Hospice, based in Worcester, is aiming to boost the number of volunteers helping the Family Support Team.

Jessica Harrison recently trained as a Family Support Volunteer. She explained, “I first found out about volunteering at St Richard’s Hospice when I contacted Andy, who is the specialist palliative care social worker from the Family Support Team. As a primary teacher, I felt passionate about supporting children with bereavement and wanted to develop my skills further whilst helping a local charity that had supported so many children and families within the community.

Potential volunteers would have two or three hours a week to spare to offer companionship and help such as light shopping and housework for patients and their families at home.

For St Richard’s Hospice

St Richard’s is also looking for caring, friendly people who like helping others to join their team of Community Volunteers.

Find out more about both roles and apply on the St Richard’s

Family Support Services Manager, Matt Jackson said: “Our Family Support Volunteers provide the most wonderful care and compassion for our patients, caregivers and those that are bereaved. They provide crucial support for those going through such difficult times in their lives, giving them space and time to share their story and find ways to support themselves and others. The family support team really values all our wonderful volunteers, the incredible work they do and we feel so grateful they are part of the team.”

Mr Jackson said, “It can be these small but important acts that can make a real difference to someone living with a serious illness and their carers. These visits and conversations offer companionship and ease the anxiety that can result from people feeling isolated at home.”

kitchen renovation might add up to 10% to the value of your home, it’s also one of the most expensive rooms to refurbish. However, some cheaper kitchen renovation work can make a big impact, without breaking the bank. Repaint your cupboards New cupboards and cabinets are one of the biggest costs you’ll face when fully renovating your kitchen. So, to save money, why not simply paint the cabinets you already have? If they’re in good condition and the style works for you, repainting them in a more on-trend colour can be a great way to breathe new life into your kitchen for a minimal cost.

New cabinetry

A new backsplash is a great way to add texture or colour to your kitchen without spending money on larger items. Tiles, stone, glass, or ceramic can all make a big impression on your space and replace a tired-looking existing backsplash.

Bathrooms are another area of the home where it’s possible to make a big impression without spending too much money on a full renovation. A new bathroom can boost your home’s value, but even cheaper touches can make a huge difference.

Bathroom suites can sometimes feel a little ‘white’ and sterile. So, often it’s the things around the suite that have the biggest impact on how it looks and feels. Try adding a new medicine or storage cabinet to a feature wall – one with a built-in mirror can also help make the space feel bigger. Look to add a cabinet that contrasts your bathroom wall colour, as this can create a focal point away from the sanitary ware itself. Add some wallpaper Wallpaper was always traditionally a no-go for bathrooms, but not now. By hanging wallpaper on a bathroom feature wall, you’ll be adding colour and interest to your bathroom space at a very small cost. And if you want to save even more money on hiring a decorator to hang it for you, there are some great peel-and-stick options available that you can hang yourself.

Renovation work often means big budget But it is possible to renovate your home, or rental property, on a budget and make a huge impact to your interior without spending a large amount of money. Take a look at these great budget renovation ideas: How can I renovate my house cheaply?

The kitchen is the heart of the home and one of the most important spaces buyers will look at when viewing your property. And while a full

A roll-top bath As bathroom features go, there are few more striking than a traditional roll-top bath. If you have the space for one, there are some great options available at all budget levels.

Whether you’re doing renovations yourself, or you’re using trades, keeping on top of your costs is key. To stay on budget and renovate your house more cheaply: Always get at least three quotes for any work you’re outsourcing to trades Try to re-use old materials, such as tiles or bricks Shop around for fixtures and fittings and look out for bargains Aim to use smaller, local suppliers Complete as many tasks yourself as you canwithout compromising the finish

Exactly how much it costs to renovate your house on a budget will depend on how much you’re willing to spend and how much of the work you can do without using tradespeople. How to renovate a house on a budget Take a look at these great budget renovation ideas for each major room in your property.

Although a new countertop can be one of the more expensive elements of a kitchen renovation, it’s also an area that is well used and can make a big impact. While a granite countertop may be out of your price range, quartz or wooden counters can look equally as striking and bring out a freshness in your existing cabinets.

New flooring

After all, it’s the first thing potential buyers will see when they enter your property on a viewing. Add a mud bench Hallways can be striking and make an immediate impression, but they need to be practical, too. A mud bench is not only a great way to store away things like shoes and coats, but it’s also a lovely feature. A stair runner Carpeted stairs can become worn and look tired. So, you could consider painting your stairs and adding a runner as a focal point. DIY wall panelling Wall panelling has become more popular in recent years – particularly in period properties – and is a great way to add a textured feature to your home. There are a number of options, from very intricate, ornate designs to classic shaker-style panelling. And if you’re looking to save more cash, why not try to fit the panels yourself?

4. Renovate your hallway on a budget If you’re doing renovation work with a view to selling your home, the hallway can be a hugely important area to get right.

5. Budget bedroom renovations Bedrooms should be tranquil havens of peace and relaxation – and there are plenty of budget renovations you can do to make yours feel exactly that. A wallpaper feature wall Bedrooms often provide excellent feature wall opportunities – and wallpaper can really help your room stand out. Don’t be afraid to go bold on your feature wall but think carefully about colours given your bedroom is ultimately a space for calming sleep. More storage Storage is key in most rooms, and definitely something buyers will be looking for in a bedroom. If your budget stretches and you have the space, you could consider a builtin wardrobe, which will have huge appeal to buyers but also add a level of practicality to your bedroom. n www.cjhole.co.uk

Much of how your living room looks and feels is down to lighting. Getting the balance right can be tricky, though, so consider installing a dimmer switch, which will mean you’ll have a softer, more ambient light level for cosy evenings in.

Dressing your windows is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve your living room’s appearance. Consider adding some new curtains to work with your living room’s colour scheme or, if your budget stretches a little further, wooden shutters can be a superb design addition.

Flooring is one of the key design elements in any living room. So, if your property’s laminate or carpet has seen better days, a good way to spend some of your budget could be on laying a new floor. Laminate or hard wood flooring can be expensive and tricky to lay, but there are some great budget peel and stick options that can look equally as striking and are straightforward to fit.

Chinese Vase sells for Record £38,000 in The Cotswolds

A badly damaged vase, a flock of Victorian pottery birds and Louis Wain memorabilia were just some of the highlights in Kinghams Cotswolds summer Fine & Decorative Arts auction held over two days on 29th & 30th July. The top selling Lot in the auction was Lot 450, a Chinese vase which had sustained substantial damage over time. Measuring just 25.5cm high, it was of shouldered form with twin handles, moulded tassels and the body decorated in famille rose palette with boys at play and in procession. Bearing the Shende Tang Shi mark in iron red, (Hall of Prudent Virtue) and dating from the Daoguang period, (1821-1850) it had been brought into a Moreton-in Marsh valuation day by a private client who had inherited it. At some point it had been completely smashed and had old repairs and restorations. With the ongoing strength in the market for Chinese porcelain, the damage did not deter a raft of pre-sale enquiries from China with five telephone bids booked and numerous online bidders registered. It was soon apparent it would sail past the £800-1,200 pre-sale estimate to bring a record £38,000, the buyer being a UK based Chinese collector. Elsewhere in the auction, two late Victorian art pottery birds, Lots 642 and 643 by Robert Wallace Martin sold for £28,000 and £24,000 respectively and were purchased by an overseas enthusiast.

Success in the decorative arts section included Lot 395, a Loetz for Boudon & Klar Secessionist papillon iridescent glass vase with whiplash metal mounts. It exceeded £2,000-3,000 expectations to bring £3,600 from a UK private collector.

Leading Lawn Care specialists GreenThumb have a range of solutions to ensure you have a lawn to be proud of next spring.

Aeration: Compacted lawns allow little water or nutrients in, weakening the lawn. Aeration allows essential water, air, and nutrients access to the root zone.

Scarification: Dead grass, known as thatch, covering your lawn will block out light and moisture. Scarify to reduce the thatch and your lawn can breathe again.

Summer heatwave, usage and drought may have left your lawn damaged. Happily, there are ways to bring your lawn back to beautiful and NOW is the time to act.

Lawn Makeover: If your lawn is past recovery, full of weed grasses and patchy, GreenThumb can totally renew your lawn. No quick fix poor turf, but a robust lawn from the very best seed. n

Autumn can be a great time for seeing spiders so it’s time to hide away your fear of our eight-legged friends and do some spotting.

Did you know that spiders can make great mums...

Last autumn I stumbled upon the Natural History Museum’s Fat Spider Fortnight. Taking place for two weeks in September, this citizen science project aims to get people looking for and submitting sightings of spiders. One of their target species is one of my favourite spiders – the garden cross orb weaver.

I kind of understand why some people aren’t keen on spiders, especially the ones that race across carpets at this time of year (they’re only looking for a mate so we really should let them find love). Spiders, however, play a really important role in nature, often keeping the populations of other species in check and are diverse and beautiful if you take the time to look. Just like you wouldn’t find a blue tit swimming on a lake or a mallard sitting on your bird feeder, spiders have their preferences for living and eating. Some spin webs in low foliage, some anchor their webs amongst tree leaves, others hide in crevices, some lie in wait on flowers and others actively hunt down their prey.

Garden Cross Spider © Wendy Carter

n

Weavers

Garden cross spiders spin large silken webs at night, ready for catching their insect prey the next day (they often eat their own web, recycling the silk for the next one that they spin). Females sit at the centre, facing downwards, patiently waiting for an unfortunate individual to land and get tangled, the vibrations bring her running to catch, bite and wrap her next meal.

At this time of year, females are particularly noticeable as they’re hugely swollen with eggs. Wander around your garden or find a flower bed in your local green space and you’re bound to come across one of their large webs with a spider in the middle. When ready to lay eggs, females leave their webs and find somewhere sheltered. They lay the eggs between two protective disc-like ‘pads’ spun from web silk and then each female protects her eggs until she dies. Whilst they take two years to reach maturity, once they’ve produced eggs, the females succumb to the frost in early winter and their eggs, hopefully, hatch successfully the following spring.

Orb

Adult garden cross spiders are variable in colour but always have white dotted markings in the rough shape of a cross on their abdomens. The recently hatched young, however, are always yellow with a black mark on their abdomen. When they hatch, they gather together for protection, huddling into a ball then dispersing if threatened. Spiders shed their skin as they grow and once the youngsters have gone through their first moult, they clamber up high, catch the wind and head off to pastures new to start the next phase of their life. We’d love to hear of spiders or other wildlife that you spot. Take a picture and upload it to www.worcswildlifetrust.co.uk/wildlife-sightings

Lisa Forde, wedding expert and founder of stationery favourites Tree of Hearts, has listed seven of her top tips to consider when planning:

2. Consider an ‘off peak’ season wedding. Weddings in July, August or December can cost thousands of pounds more just because it’s peak season yet September and October often have some of the most beautiful weather of the year. Have a think about when you want your wedding - some venues may even have offers for less popular times of year.

Whether a up and coming wedding band or a photography student with beams of enthusiasm, you don’t need to spend thousands on some suppliers. Just make sure you check out their portfolio before booking to check it’s in your style and taste.

1. Set your budget, and stick to it! Look at what you can afford and set your budget, once you have your budget set, be really strict with yourselves and stick to it. That way you’ll soon start to realise what’s important to you and your partner and it will help narrow down what you’re happy to pay for.

7. Seek out new, up and coming suppliers.

But just how can engaged couples save on the cost of their big day without skimping on the quality of the wedding they want?

Save money when planning your wedding

Lisa added: “But most importantly don’t forget to remember why you’re getting married in the first place. It’s a celebration of you and the person you love deciding to commit to one another. You don’t need to spend tens of thousands of pounds in order to do that.” n Tree of Hearts is a one-stop shop for all things wedding stationery. To find out more visit treeofhearts.co.uk

The cost of living crisis is worsening by the day - and with an average UK wedding costing upto £35,000, it’s no wonder brides-to-be are looking for tips and tricks to cut the cost.

3. Consider a week day nuptials Weddings on the weekend can cost thousands of pounds more than a week day, too. And while it’s often thought it helps guests by having a wedding on a Saturday because they don’t have to book time off work, at the end of the day, it’s your wedding - do what’s right for you and your partner.

There are many ways to save water at home, including:

In 2022, in a time of hose pipe bans has our understanding increased of how we use water in the intervening 9 years. Age UK has just issued the following advice Tips for saving water

The households significantly over-reported the number of baths and showers they took in a week: 5.4 baths and showers a week were reported, only 3.9 were observed. The households accurately reported their use of washing machines and dishwashers. Half of the households were unable to identify the highest water-using activity in their home.

Saving Water

Living at Brook Court, Chandler Court and Perry Manor is all about quality of life. Every colleague in the home is passionate about enabling residents to enjoy a fulfilling lifestyle, tailored around their unique needs and preferences. The lifestyle teams organise a huge variety of group and one-to-one activities, with plenty going on each day. With the extra support that Brook Court, Chandler Court and Perry Manor offer, new residents are often surprised at what they can do, whether that’s being able to continue with an activity they’ve enjoyed in the past, or even discovering new hobbies with our daily activities. Whether your loved one enjoys a quiet cup of tea in bed before starting the day, loves going for strolls in the landscaped grounds, or enjoys a chat over a beer, the team at Brook Court, Chandler Court and Perry Manor will spend time to enable them to continue living life the way they want to.

• Install a water butt to collect rainwater for your garden – it is better for the garden than tap water.

• Do not leave the water running while brushing your teeth or shaving.

• Wash vegetables in a bowl rather than under running water.

They found that the use was split Personal bathing (33%), taps (31%) and toilet flushing (22%) are the highest areas of consumption.

When a family is thinking about care for a loved one, they want the best - they want to know that the care home they choose will put their loved one’s safety, happiness and wellbeing first.

• Replace worn washers on leaky taps. A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and over a year can add over £18 to your annual water bill.

• Water your garden in the early morning or evening as it will not evaporate so quickly. Water your garden thoroughly once a week rather than more frequently and avoid sprinklers.

Brook Court, Chandler Court and Perry Manor care homes are part of award-winning provider, Care UK – one of the UK’s most successful care home operators* with over 40 years’ experience of delivering high quality care to older people. n Brook Court care home 37-38 Oldnall Road, Kidderminster DY10 3HN

• Take showers instead of baths - a 5-minute shower uses half as much water as a bath.

In 2013 the Energy Saving Trust produced a comprehensive report on the use of water in our homes.

In particular, the households incorrectly assumed that washing machines are the biggest users of water. The water used by toilets was underestimated, even though overall they typically use far more than washing machines.

Quality care you can trust in Worcestershire

• Keep a bottle or jug of water in the fridge instead of running tap water until it gets cold (cover the jug and keep no longer than a day).

They then compared just how accurately householders perceive and self-report wateruse behaviours. This is real frequency, duration and volume of water-use activities, observed from the micro-component monitoring, compared against householder self-reported assessments given during the interviews and Water Energy Calculator survey.

Care UK’s Brook Court, Chandler Court and Perry Manor care homes in Worcestershire provide residential, dementia and nursing care, giving families peace of mind that their loved ones can stay living at the home should their needs change.

• Use minimum water when boiling in saucepans or kettles – saving energy as well as water. Ensure water pipes are lagged in time for winter – burst water pipes cause serious damage and waste water. Lagging pipes reduces heat loss, saving money on energy bills.

Water meters

• if you lose water through a leak on pipework beyond the meter, you may have to pay for it, although allowance may be made if this is the first time since it was installed.

• you want to be in control of what you pay.

The CCW website www.ccwater.org.uk has a water meter calculator that can estimate if you can cut your water bills by switching to a meter. The calculation is based on your water company’s charges and information provided by you about your water usage. Your water company can provide you with guidance on obtaining a water meter. Meters are installed free of charge for household customers.

• Install a displacement device in your cistern, such as a Hippo or a Save-a-flush. This saves as much as three litres of water with every flush. Your water company may supply them for free.

You can revert to unmeasured charging within two years of installation, but there are exceptions – see section 11. This only applies if you applied for the meter, not to subsequent occupiers of the property who must keep a previously installed meter. n

• Do not use your washing machine or dishwasher on half-load – full loads use less water than two half loads.

• If a cistern or pipe bursts you must drain the system by running the cold tap. If the stop tap is stuck or leaking, have it repaired by a plumber.

• your property has a high rateable value

Tenants with a fixed-term tenancy of less than six months must ask their landlord’s permission. Tenants with a fixed term tenancy of six months or more have the right to have a water meter fitted, but they may need their landlord’s permission to have an internal meter fitted if plumbing must be altered.

• you are a small or single occupancy household or are actively water conscious

GOLDEN YEARS

n 26 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 221 | September 2022

• you do not know in advance how much your annual bill is going to be, as it varies depending on how much water you use in the year, as with other utility bills

For more information visit ageuk.org.uk

It may be beneficial to switch to a meter if:

• Know where your stop tap (stopcock) is located. If any repairs are needed, it must be turned off.

Drawbacks of having a meter installed can include:

• you may have to allow access for your meter to be read (although many water meters can be read from outside your home)

There are a lot of myths about secondary school – having your head flushed down the toilet by older kids is one of the most enduring. Talk about your own school days with your child (the good memories at least) and let them know that most older kids will just ignore them.

Let them have a say in their school uniform

If there is one thing that will help your child settle in a new school more easily, it’s making friends. In class, their teacher will likely set up a buddy system, so they have someone to help show them the ropes in those first few weeks.

There’s a lot for your child to remember when they first start secondary school so keep a copy of their timetable so you know what lessons they have and can remind them what they need in their bag each day so they don’t turn up unprepared.

Settle into a New School or Class

n

Keep a copy of their school timetable

At each educational change similar issues appear... Keeping an open dialogue with your child is one of the most important aspects of helping them settle in a new school.

Dispel the bullying myths

Elsewhere, it’s important to encourage your child to take other opportunities to get to know people. Mirror the hobbies and teams your child was a part of in their old school and let them bond with likeminded children in their new environment. Once they begin to make friends and have settled in nicely, consider organising a play date, like you did years ago. This is a great opportunity to build friendships outside of the formalities of school and gives you a chance to mix with some of your fellow parents. How long will it take for my child to be truly settled in their new school? You know your child best, but if they still have issues and concerns after six weeks or so, it may be worth mentioning to the school. Children adapt to new things at different rates. Your first instinct should always be patience. Give it time and your child will no doubt love their new school as much as their old one. If they are starting secondary, heading to ‘big school’ for the first time can be daunting, they are going from a familiar environment where they’re the oldest to being the youngest all over again. They’ll also have to become more independent and cope with a larger workload.

Mobile phone use - While your child might not be allowed to have their phone turned on in school hours, knowing they can contact you on the way there or way home is a comfort for both of you, particularly if they use public transport.

Throughout the process, keep communicating and gauge how your child is feeling about what lies ahead. Encourage after school activities

No one wants to stick out when starting a new school so let your child have a hand in choosing their bag and uniform. Tempting as it is to buy their uniform a few sizes too big or get them a practical but ugly school bag, letting them choose things that will help them fit in will make them feel more confident.

Reassure them and listen when they need you Your child might feel they’re too old to need you now but be on hand to listen to any worries about lessons or friends, however trivial and help them work things out. Be prepared for a few strops as they settle in and give them a bit of leeway. If it’s a struggle getting them to talk about how school’s going, try talking to them while you’re in the car; when you’re both facing forward, it can make the conversational less confrontational, which helps a lot of teens to open up a bit more.

Remember the form tutor is there for you and your child should you need their help and guidance.

n 28 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 221 | September 2022

One of the biggest changes for children’s lives is moving to a new school.

Remind them that everyone in their year is in the same boat and will be feeling nervous on their first day. Even if they have plenty of friends from primary in their class already, tell them to smile at anyone who looks lonely and introduce themselves. Everybody will want to make new friends. Plus, if your child is looking out for other lonely kids, that might help them feel less lonely themselves!

EDUCATION

We are delighted that so many of our students are moving on to higher education, including four students who received confirmed places at Cambridge, five offers to study medical or veterinary-related degrees, 21 engineering offers, and full scholarships to Stanford and the University of Iowa in the US. Other King’s students will go on to study a wide range of other subjects at leading institutions including Law, Architecture, Business and Economics, Geography, Maths, History and Product Design.

King’s Worcester Pupils Celebrate Outstanding A levelANSWERSResults King’s Worcester Performance in Summary • 26% graded A* • 54.2% grades A*- A • 80.3% A*- B • 93.8% A*- C • 100% pass rate • 87 students achieved grades ABB or better • 18 students achieved 3 or more A*’s

n

The King’s School, Worcester is delighted to recognise the achievements of this year’s A level students, who achieved outstanding results despite the challenge and disruption of the last two years.

n 30 | Worcestershire Now | Issue 221 | September 2022

Overall a record 53 students each achieved three or more grades at A or A*. In all, 26% of grades were A*, 54% of results achieved were A*- A and 94% graded A*-C. The Headmaster, Gareth Doodes praised the cohort on their achievements: “The fortitude and resilience of our students, who before this summer had never sat public exams, have been outstanding. These stellar results are a testament to the hard work and commitment of this year group. Our hybrid offering throughout the pandemic enabled pupils and teachers to work from home whilst isolating, ensuring continuity of learning. I will be forever grateful for the work of our teachers who, despite the challenges of COVID, have continued to deliver an exceptional standard of education.”

In addition to A levels, the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) results were outstanding, with 63% awarded A* grades, and 87% A* - A, achieved by 38 students on a diverse range of questions. Equivalent to half an A level, the EPQ allows students to undertake in-depth research in an area of personal interest, enabling them to stand out in their university applications and develop extra skills. This year group was one of the largest A level cohorts the School has seen, with 142 students taking 458 A levels. Of particular note are the 16 students who received straight A*s, including Head of School Charlotte Morgan, who will read Medicine at Cambridge, Head of School Josh Richardson, who will read Mechanical with Automotive Engineering at Bath, Senior Scholar Luke Beever, who will study Engineering at Cambridge, and Tom Kingsford-Dowd, who will be heading to the University of Southampton to read Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Without a doubt, choosing the right school for a young person is an important decision. We are confident The Chantry School establishes a strong, purposeful and positive partnership with parents and carers, to ensure your child’s wellbeing, happiness and success. Out underpinning philosophy is the belief that it is important to develop young people who have a high regard for, and a compassionate understanding and tolerance of, other people’s views, cultures, backgrounds and faiths. It is important that we enable all pupils to be proud members of, and positively contribute to, our caring community. We encourage our pupils to aim high, embrace challenge and develop the resilience to keep trying to achieve their highest possible potential. We want our pupils to have a wide range of choices open to them when they leave school and we work very hard with pupils in and out of the classroom to achieve this. You are welcome to visit our Open Evenings or make an appointment to see the school in action. A
