Alan Shulik: Hiway Café, Texas Alan Shulik is a psychologist who studied at the Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, where he received a Master's degree in clinical psychology, and at the California School of Professional Psychology in Fresno, where he received his Ph.D. He has spent many years in private practice in New Haven, Connecticut. Alan Shulik is also an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in numerous galleries and publications. He is currently preparing an exhibit for the Kehler Liddell Gallery in New Haven which is set to open in early 2015. His work has already appeared in exhibits at the Kehler Liddell Gallery, including a photograph entitled Hiway Café, Texas. This Alan Shulik photograph is a striking black and white image of an old, weatherbeaten café in what appears to be a remote area of Texas. It is a stark image: the café that gave the photo its name is old and worn by exposure to the elements, a roadside attraction where travelers might have stopped for coffee and lunch in the 1930s and 1940s. The café, which appears to be of adobe, is crumbling; the front door hangs loosely on its hinges. Several baskets rest on the cracked and broken sidewalk in front. Viewing Hiway Café, Texas, by Alan Shulik, evokes wistfulness; an inexplicable nostalgia. Any number of questions may arise in the mind of the beholder. Just where in Texas is this place? Is it abandoned? Is this photograph a portrait, a landscape, or a still life? Does the artist's input, apart from the actual work, even needed in order to interpret that work? Alan Shulik's Hiway Café, Texas is an archival pigment print, a 19th Century process adapted to modern digital photography and printing that promotes image stability. Archival pigments display offers an excellent range of colors and grays, and can exactly match the original piece. Alan Shulik is a recipient of the Silvermine Mortgage Award and the Simmons Photography Award. He took first honors in a juried exhibition at the Ridgefield Gild of Artists in Ridgefield, Connecticut in 2001, and First Honors at a group exhibition at the New England Photographic Workship Gallery in New Mildford, Connecticut in 1991. His photography has been featured in Connecticut Cottages & Gardens magazine and in Focus magazine, a Journal of Fine Art Black and White Photography in 2005. Alan Shulik served as the Co-Chair of the Spectra National Photography Triennial in New Canaan, Connecticut in 2004, 2007, and 2010.
