Desiree Powell-Importance of Cancer Research Cancer research is a very important component in the fight against the disease. Cancer Centers across the United States are constantly doing testing a research that has led to great advancements in treatment. One of the newest treatments is called cancer immunotherapy. It's a treatment that harnesses and enhances the persons own immune system to fight cancer. It shows promising results as a new cancer treatment approach. Not since the development of the first chemo therapies in the late 1940's have they seen such results. The human body’s immune system has extraordinary power and a capacity for memory, which can be exquisitely specific. It plays the central and universal role in the human biology. Immunotherapy uses treatments that have the potential to achieve complete, long-lasting remissions with few or no side effects. It works well for any type of cancer patient, regardless of the type. A lot of time and investment went into cancer immunotherapy testing and today it is a highly active and exciting field, with unprecedented potential. It comes after years and years of the promise of discovering, developing, and delivering a safe and effective treatment for cancer patients. This therapy makes a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of patients fighting the disease. According to Desiree Powell, “this is just a small step forward in the fight against cancer. Desiree Powell is a clinical laboratory technician, working in the cancer research department in the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This state-of-the art center is a leading the institution way in the treatment of cancer and a pioneer in cancer research. Desiree Powell is responsible for teaching fellow colleagues about hematology, serology and parasitology in the Laboratory of Comparative Pathology. She takes her work very seriously and loves that she can help thousands of people fight this serious disease. Prior to Desiree Powell working as a laboratory technician for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, she enlisted and served in the Army National Guard in 2006. She first attended the State University of New York at Geneseo and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. Desiree Powell then enlisted in the Army National Guard to receive training as a medical laboratory specialist. After leaving the Army National Guard, she continued her training in being a medical laboratory specialist and found a job within one of the top cancer centers in the United States.
