Douglas MacNeille on The Importance of Youth Sports Within the Community

As a member of several community recreational clubs, Douglas MacNeille knows the importance of youth sports within the community. An attorney in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Douglas spends much of his free time within his community, either playing sports himself or working to better the community services around him. He is a member of the local Racquet club, and plays golf and tennis frequently. Douglas MacNeille was a past commissioner of Beaufort County Parks and Leisure Services, where he worked to develop and maintain Beaufort County's outdoor parks, sports areas, and community activities.

Douglas MacNeille is a founding member of the Hilton Head Island Baseball Association in the Dixie Youth Baseball League. Douglas, who sometimes coaches, helped in the preparation and development of this association to promote youth sports within the community. Youth sports within the town not only leads to an economically sound community with a sense of camaraderie, but they are directly beneficial to the children who participate.

There have been multiple studies done and are accumulating stacks of literature on the subject of youth sports and their benefit to the growing mind. Research has found that children who participate see better academic performance, higher self-esteem, less behavioral problems, and better psychosocial behaviors. The discipline of training, listening to coaches, learning teamwork, and in return the payoff of a game well-played (or the understanding of a loss) help to build mental foundations that the athlete will call upon for life.

Additionally, studies have found that children who participate in youth sports have shown a greater family attachment and more interactions with parents. Another study found that men who had played a sport in high school earned 31% more in wages than those who had not played sports. Perhaps this is because they have learned an ingrained desire to seek out achievement within the workforce. Young athletes tend to have better emotional control and social behaviors as well. This points to real indicators that youth sports nurture children into healthy adults that are active, productive members of the world around them, and therefore can be expected to strengthen their communities.

When not at work in his busy law firm, Douglas MacNeille can be found playing golf, tennis, or working with the youth sports activities. Douglas MacNeille takes pride in being a family man and spends as much time as possible with his son and granddaughter. He is an expert attorney with 35 years of experience and a high standard of moral code. Douglas MacNeille's
